How To Lead People With More Experience Than You w/ Trey McWilliams

Some people build successful businesses towards the goal of eventually selling their company and cashing in on their efforts. Meanwhile, others pass down their life's work to their children in hopes that they could continue to make their vision work and grow to different heights. Some people assume that inheriting a business is easier than starting from scratch. After all, you'd be inheriting an established system. What many people don't see is that you also inherit all of the problems from the previous generation that went unsolved. In this episode of the Service Business Mastery podcast, we talk to Trey McWilliams, CEO of McWilliams Group, a third-generation business owner. At age 22, he took over McWilliams and Son Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing, a family business that was led by his father and founded by his grandfather before him. As a young and green leader, he knew he had big shoes to fill. But also knew that he had a vision for the business that only he could bring to fruition. In this episode, we discuss: The challenges of running an established family business How to earn the trust of your employees as a 3rd generation owner Why culture is critical to creating a scalable business How to make your employees feel that they're part of a shared vision Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: Join the Service Business Mastery Facebook group This episode is kindly sponsored by Sera (visit their website) CompanyCam (visit their website), and UpFrog (visit their website). Take Care Of Employees, And They Take Care Of You w/ Jim Clark

Unfortunately, the trades are filled with people who are qualified to be technicians, but have received no training to be a business owner and leader. Some people eventually figure leadership out, but the majority don't and that leads to a lot of businesses failing and jobs lost in the process. The truth is, leadership is an entirely different skill set from being a technician. You could be the best plumbing, electrical, or HVAC technician in the world and still fail at operating a business. Because apart from knowing the trades like the back of your hand, you also need to know people. And running a business is all about taking care of the people that work for you. In this episode of the Service Business Mastery podcast, we talk to Jim Clark, owner of the Blue Diamond Consultants, a consulting company dedicated to coaching home service companies that want to grow and exit in the next 3 to 5 years. Having owned and sold his previous trade companies, Jim talks about the hardships and pain points he met along the way. Jim specifically focuses on taking care of his employees, and doing everything he can to make sure that they love doing the work they do, even when times are tough. Jim also talks about creating a positive workplace culture that not only benefits your employees, but helps your business earn clients as well. In this episode, we discuss: Why your first job as an owner is to make your employees happy Employee recognition goes a long way How to build a good workplace culture Why taking care of business is also about taking care of people Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: Join the Service Business Mastery Facebook group This episode is kindly sponsored by Sera (visit their website) CompanyCam (visit their website), and UpFrog (visit their website). The Pitfalls of Self Warranties and How to Prepare for Inflation w/ Billy Stevens & Landon Brewer

It doesn't matter if we're already in a recession; the cold hard truth is that people and businesses are already feeling the brunt of inflation. People's purchasing powers have decreased, and it's getting harder to sell. The businesses that do survive this economic downturn will be the ones that come up with ways to adapt and bring in the most value to their customers. In this episode, Billy Stevens of Sera Systems and Landon Brewer of Goettl Air Conditioning & Plumbing exchange ideas with our hosts about not only surviving but thriving during times of economic downturn. One of these strategies discussed is selling warranties. They help build trust with customers and are a massive revenue stream that most of the service business industry has yet to embrace and take advantage of fully. Warranties are an exciting opportunity overall, but they don't come without cost, especially if you decide to offer them in-house. Billy offers tips on how to price your warranties competitively, and how you can make the process of handling warranties more seamless through Sera and its management capabilities. There is also the matter of putting enough focus on the service side of your business. Instead of putting all your effort into new installations when people are looking to spend less, it might be best to be proactive in offering replacements, maintenance, and repairs. Landon also suggests a way to create a revenue stream by turning these services into perks that you can get through club membership. In this episode, we discuss: Strategies to survive inflation and the recession How the service side of your business may be the key to survival Why the industry service industry is missing out on revenue from warranties The pros and cons of doing warranties in-house Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: This episode is kindly sponsored by Sera (visit their website) CompanyCam (visit their website), and UpFrog (visit their website). The Employee Retention Credit (ERC) explained w/ Catherine Tindall

Are you a business owner who saw your revenues plummet during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic due to government restrictions? Then you could be eligible to receive financial assistance from the government in the form of the Employee Retention Credit (ERC). Unfortunately, because of the complicated procedures in place, many business owners end up filing bad claims or worse, not file a claim at all. Unfortunately for many business owners, the procedure for submission and evaluating whether you qualify for the credit at all is complex, and may involve digging through government announcements for the exact restriction that may have affected you. There is also the process of determining how much credit you qualify for, based on things like the wages your employees earned, and whether you paid them through the Paycheck Protection Program, among others. The good news is that you may be eligible for up to $5000 per employee that you paid during the whole year of 2020 and $7000 per employee for three quarters during tax year 2021. The bad news is that there are several exemptions and caveats that apply, and they are enough to make anybody's head spin. But if you have a headcount of more than 10 employees, and feel like government restrictions really impacted on your ability to operate and create revenue, then it's worth having a tax professional evaluate your case. In this episode, Catherine Tindall, one of the partners at Dominion Enterprise Services, a specialty CPA firm that specializes in helping businesses maximize their tax credits, gives us information about the ERC and whether you might be leaving a very significant number of dollars off the table by not filing a claim. She also talks about the consequences of filing a bad ERC claim, which can lead to an unapproved claim or worse, a stringent audit by the IRS. In this episode, we discuss: What the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) is all about How to know if you are qualified to file an ERC claim What the process of filing an ERC claim can look like Why you need to know how to avoid filing a bad ERC claim Check out these resources we mentioned during the podcast: Join the Service Business Mastery Facebook group This episode is kindly sponsored by Sera (visit their website) and CompanyCam (visit www.companycam.com/SBM for a 14 day trial and 50% off your first two months). The Importance Of Constant Learning And Growth In Running A Service Business w/ John Akhoian

Many people treat success as a destination, an endpoint to arrive at with hard work and persistence. The problem with this mindset is it encourages people to be complacent when they reach a certain level of success, stopping them from realizing their true potential, and never evolving into better versions of themselves. At 19, John Akhoian saved well enough from working solo to buy his own plumbing franchise. Not long after, he bought more locations and became one of their largest multi-franchise locations. Most people would just keep this good thing going, but John wasn't most people. 20 years later, John decided that he had learned everything he could about running a service business. So he got out of the franchising business and put up his own company, Rooter Hero Plumbing in Orange County back in 2011. He has since opened 13 more locations to become the largest plumbing company in California while also opening two new locations in Nevada and Arizona. In this episode, John shares the biggest mistake he made while training new talent, and talks about the secret to his success. He also opens up about the struggle that his company and many others in the service industry are currently facing, and his strategy for overcoming this latest hurdle to sustainable growth.
