Ep. 1593 Riccardo Carpini | The Next Generation

Welcome to Episode 1593 in which host Victoria Cece interviews Riccardo Carpini of I Carpini Winery this week on The Next Generation. The Next Generation where Victoria Cece interviews young Italian wine people shaking up the wine scene.More about the wineryWhat makes wines great is only the infinite patience of time, especially if you first worked in a natural, holistic way, conceiving and designing the vineyard as a harmonious ecosystem. This is the philosophy espoused by Paolo Carlo Ghislandi and his son Riccardo in the splendor of the Colli Tortonesi, home of Timorasso: a great white, which owes its exuberance and its ability to evolve to a noble soil of marine origin, from thermal waters.Loyalty and courage: from Ghislandi, also the first sparkling Timorasso. In the I Carpini estate, which has always been organic and now also certified Bio (not to mention the GreenCare recognition for the energy obtained from renewable sources), the vocation for great wines is based on the instinct that guides the winemaker in interpreting soils, seasons and varieties such as Barbera, which here achieves unthinkable results thanks to very long refinements. Those that then meet steel, wood and even amphora are truly special musts, as in the case of the surprising Timox. Minerality and flavor: glasses that excite, enhancing the passionate research from which they are born, to become truly unique.Connect:Website icarpini.it/en/More about the host:Victoria Cece is a food and beverage storyteller whose curiosity is somewhere deep in a bowl of pasta or a bottle of wine. A fool for history, you can find her reading up about ancient grape varietals or wandering around a little Italian town eating everything in sight, under her alias Slutti Spaghetti.Connect:Instagram: @sluttispaghettiTwitter: @sluttispaghettiLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/victoria-cece/_______________________________Let's keep in touch! Ep. 1590 What Does ‘Natural’ Mean In Wine | wine2wine Business Forum 2023 Series

Welcome to Episode 1590, where Prof. Scienza discusses his upcoming seminar on wine2wine Business Forum 2023, What Does ‘Natural’ Mean In Wine? How To Engage Wine Lovers With Science. The seminar’s abstract:The European Commission has prohibited the use of the words “natural wine” on labels in Europe. Why? Primarily because there exists an underlying misunderstanding about what “natural” actually refers to in the wine sector. One side of the argument sees “natural” wines as those with zero interventions (i.e., no chemicals, no sulfites, no pesticides, etc.), while forgetting that the harvest, fermentation and bottling processes all involve human intervention. The other side of the argument says the only wines that are truly “natural” must be those made from wild vines with no genetic selection over time – and these wines simply do not exist. While both arguments can be viewed as extreme, both have at heart a desire for sustainability, care for the environment and attention to the health of consumers. Recent trends, especially among young/new wine consumers and often fuelled by social media, point to an emphasis on the desire for “wholesome” food and beverage products that demonstrate a respect for nature and consumers’ health. These trends are not new, but the escalation of focus on these issues has caused a battle with existing consumers who value and recognize the key sensory references basic to the traditional evaluation of wine. Producers of “natural” wines contribute to the confusion by ignoring both sides of the argument and insisting that their winemaking choices stem solely from their beliefs about how wines should be made.Is “natural” wine a myth? A marketing ploy? The darling of social media? If we focus on the “naturalness” of wine, do we risk foregoing ground-breaking research on precision viticulture, technique and technology that could represent the most effective way to enhance the terroir while respecting environmental and economic sustainability? How do we combat fake news and alarmism? We must address the great shortage of trainers and communicators who combine technical skills with the ability to make themselves not only understood, but also to fascinate those who listen or read.If you want to learn more about the Professor:The one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type "Verdicchio" in place of "Vermentino.” Attilio Scienza is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti. He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff! To find out more about Attilio Scienza visit:vinitalyinternational.com/wordpress/via-faqs/_______________________________Let's keep in touch! Ep. 1589 Enrico Mandirola Of Mandirola Vini | Slow Wine 2023

Welcome to Episode 1589; part of our Italian wine interview series set in Bologna! Today’s interview is between Joy Livingston and Enrico Mandirola of Mandirola ViniStevie Kim and her team traveled to the Bologna Slow Wine Fair in March 2023. There they conducted dozens of interviews with some of Italy's most inspiring producers. Join the fun every Thursday afternoon!Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days.More about today’s winery:The history of Mandirola wine originates in 1913 when my great-grandfather Enrico purchased a company founded at the beginning of the 19th century and known with the name of “ Il Muntagnei ” (which in the local dialect means “small mountain”). The property then consisted of approximately 10/12 hectares, mostly cultivated with vines, wheat and corn.Later, in the 1950s, my grandfather Giovanni together with his sons Lino, Mario, Bruno and Giorgio continued the company and began producing small quantities of wine. Only a small part was sold directly, the bulk of the production ended up at the cooperative winery.Over the next twenty years the company expanded. Land is acquired in the municipality of Momperone and in the Piani di Casasco area. Here, 12 hectares of land, mostly woodland, were purchased. On this surface, the largest plum plantation in Piedmont will later be built, with approximately 4,000 plants. Nowadays these lands represent one of the two main bodies of the company. In Casasco another 2 hectares of land, adjacent to the existing vineyards, will form the fields called "Vigna grande" and "Saröre".Between the 1980s and the end of the last century, the most significant events were the purchase of the “Lù della Costa” field, on which a Timorasso vineyard was placed in 1992, and later in 1998, the planting of the plot “Saröre” in Barbera and Moscato.Only in the last decade did the acquisition of the historic Timorasso vineyard, called "Tantèi" and the plot of land " Il Becco ", so called because of its characteristic triangle shape, date back to the last decade.Today the company consists of approximately 30 hectares, 11 of which are planted with vineyards, 11 of arable land, approximately 2 with orchards and 6 with forests.Connect:Website: www.mandirolavini.it/Facebook: www.facebook.com/mandirolavini/Instagram: www.instagram.com/mandirolavini/_______________________________Let's keep in touch! Ep. 1588 Crisis Of International Wine PR | wine2wine Business Forum 2022

Welcome to Episode 1588, Crisis of international wine PR with Francesco Minetti (Translated in English). This is the wine2wine Business Forum 2022 Series. The sessions are recorded and uploaded on Italian Wine Podcast.wine2wine Business Forum is an international wine business event, held annually in Verona, Italy since 2014. The event is a key reference point for wine producers and a diverse variety of wine professionals gather to develop and expand their wine business worldwide.Abstract:Wine communication has always aimed to ensure visibility and reputation, thus allowing growth in terms of volume and value. While wine brands have increasingly sought visibility and reputation in recent years, the traditional players who can skillfully meet this need have significantly decreased in number. At the same time, the amount of easily accessible content on corporate social media sites and channels has grown exponentially. Unfortunately, these types of content rarely acquire visibility, thus creating little added value for the brand. So, can we talk about a global wine PR crisis? What kind of strategies can be adopted to handle public relations in a timely manner?More about today’s speaker: Francesco MinettiFrancesco was born in Alba and is the owner and CEO of Well Com, the largest Italian wine communication agency. He has contributed to the international development of some of the most famous Italian brands, working for Protection Consortiums, large companies and boutique wineries. Co-presenter of the podcast “La retroetichetta”, he has developed a strategic methodology called identity-centered design and carries out academic research and mentoring for agri-food start-ups. After graduating with honors in Economics from Bocconi, he worked on financial market infrastructure in the London Stock Exchange group in Italy, England and Mongolia. For the past 10 years, he has lived between the Langhe and Milan. Ep. 1586 Gianluca Calì | Voices With Cynthia Chaplin

Welcome to Episode 1586, in which Cynthia Chaplin interviews Gianluca Calì of the Al-Cantàra winery in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast. Al-Cantàra won the Gran Vinitaly 5StarWines “Winery of the Year” and the “Best Rosé Wine” for its Etna DOC Nerello Mascalese Rosato Amuri di Fimmina e Amuri di Matri 2021.More about today’s guestFrom the happy intuition that a good wine is "poetry" and to make it takes "art", Al-Cantàra was born in 2005. Since the beginning, the winery has established itself at a national and international level thanks to the high quality of its wines, recognized by several important awards and, last but not the least, by the amazing results achieved both at Vinitaly, where with seven wines reported in the 5 StarWines - The Book, Al-Cantàra has been the second most awarded winery in Sicily and the sixth in Italy, and at Decanter where, with a gold medal and two silver medals, Al-Cantàra has been the first winery of Etna for number of important awards. These results have been achieved thanks to the care with which all our workers manage the vineyards and to the professionalism of our winemaker, Salvatore Rizzuto, graduated in Alba and with experience in Bordeaux and Langhe. The sophisticated and modern packaging is another distinctive feature of the products Al-Cantàra, whose unmistakable labels are embellished by the suggestive representations of young Sicilian artists, among which lately Annachiara Di Pietro, that exalt the traditions, the culture and the Etna territory.Connect:Website: www.al-cantara.it/Facebook: www.facebook.com/AlCantara2005Instagram: www.instagram.com/alcantara_winery/About today’s Host:Cynthia Chaplin is a VIA certified Italian Wine Ambassador, a professional sommelier with FIS and the WSA, a member of Le Donne del Vino, and a Professor of Italian wine and culture.
