Ep. 1337 Enrico Coser | Italian Trade Agency Masterclass Wineries In Germany
Welcome to Episode 1337; part of our new Italian wine interview series set in Dusseldorf, Germany. Today Joy Livingston interviews Enrico Coser of Ronco dei Tassi winery.Stevie Kim and her team travelled to Dusseldorf, Germany this March to collaborate with ITA, the Italian Trade Agency. ITA was organizing some incredible Masterclasses featuring the best wines Italy has to offer. Each masterclass was led by the Master Sommelier Eros Teboni (awarded Best Sommelier Worldwide in 2018), and they wanted us there to document the amazing 3 days!Tune-in each Thursday as we bring you the great interviews that unfolded over the course of 3 days.More about today’s guest:Enrico Coser’s wine was featured in the “Bordeaux Blends of Italy” masterclass. The Friuli region, located in north-eastern Italy on the Slovenian border, is renowned for being home to some of Italy’s most avant-garde winemakers. Ronco dei Tassi, however, stands out from the crowd with its firm commitment to tradition, producing layered, elegant wines that speak of the terroir and the land from which they come. The winery is guided by Fabio Coser, previously a consulting oenologist in the area, who purchased the estate in 1989 with his wife, Daniela. At the time, the property comprised about 22 acres, 10 of which were already planted to vine, in the heart of the Collio Goriziano in the township of Cormòns. The name of the winery itself is closely tied to the region: “ronco” is the word in Friulian dialect to describe a “hillside, terraced vineyard,” while “tassi” refers to the badgers who often pay visit to the vineyards to enjoy the harvest’s juiciest grapes.Sons Matteo and Enrico have joined the family business and the estate has grown to over 30 hectares (75acres), 18 (45 acres) of which are planted to vines. The remainder of the land has been left as woodland, considered essential to maintaining the delicate balance between cultivation and forest, allowing sustainable agricultural practices to be implemented most effectively. The estate is ideally positioned at the boundary of the Plessiva Natural Park, an oasis protected by the Friuli region, and as such provides a safe haven and ideal habitat for local flora and fauna to flourish. The family firmly believes in the value of protecting this little corner of paradise, acting as a guarantee to ensure the future of this splendid territory and its wines.More about the winery:roncodeitassi.it/en/More about the interviewer:Joy Livingston is the Producer of Italian Wine Podcast. Narrator extraordinaire and Scienza whisperer Joy Livingston has been known to edit the occasional book from time to time. When Joy is not busy Producing the podcast she is also working hard on the Mamma Jumbo Shrimp YouTube channel where many of the interviews stream on video!Let's keep in touch! Ep. 1334 Sandro Boscaini | Wine Food & Travel With Marc Millon
Welcome to Episode 1334 in which Marc Millon interviews Sandro Boscaini, Chairman/Co-Managing Director, Masi Agricola SpaMore about Masi Agricola:Representing the sixth generation of family ownership and management, Sandro Boscaini heads Masi Agricola today, one of the most important vignerons and winemakers in Valpolicella. The historic Masi headquarters are in the center of Valpolicella, a lovely hilly area between Lake Garda and Verona.Differentiating the winery from others is the Boscaini family’s careful selection of specific vineyard sites, their use of indigenous grape varietals, and their respect for historic winemaking techniques from the region, which are constantly updated by Masi Technical Group. Coordinated by Raffaele Boscaini, Masi Technical Group is made up of experts from different disciplines — including agronomists, oenologists, and experts in quality control, marketing, and sales – and works with national and international institutions and universities. Some of its most important projects include innovations in the appassimento technique, which has been used to create a modern style of Amarone and has achieved international success.Appassimento is the traditional method used in the Veneto region to concentrate aromas and flavors in wine. Before vinification, grapes are laid out on bamboo racks in drying lofts over the winter, an ancient technique used for centuries in the region. Passed down through generations in the Boscaini family, this craft has been modified innovatively by the Masi Technical Group and is used today to make fresh and lively wines from dried grapes, notably Amarone. The APPAXXIMENTO® symbol signifies Masi’s expertise in appassimento in the 21st century and guarantees the authenticity and quality of Masi wines. To learn more about the company visit:www.masi.it/enMore about the host Marc Millon:Marc Millon, VIA Italian Wine Ambassador 2021, has been travelling, eating, drinking, learning and writing about wine, food and travel for nearly 40 years.
