10 - Meet Cervu, a Women's Health Early-Stage Venture from the MedTech Master's Program (Mini-Series Episode 3)
Abby Scheer, Alan Rosenbaum, MD, and Chandler Sizer comprise the Cervu team. Cervu is an early-stage venture developing an intervaginal device to help cancer survivors with dyspareunia perform pelvic floor physical therapy at home. The c-corp originally formed as a student team in the MedTech Innovation + Entrepreneurship M.S. Program at UNC and NC State. On this episode, listen to Abby, Alan, and Chandler talk about Cervu's mission, and how they have gone about identifying an unmet need, executing business and design conceptualization, and working with end users during design iteration. They also discuss how they have been supported along the way by the MedTech Innovation + Entrepreneurship Program.

Nicole Spencer is a Clinical Field Engineer at Fiagon, an endoscopic sinus surgery medical device company. Before Fiagon, Nicole worked as an Integration Engineer at Epic, a healthcare software company. She is also a 2019 grad of the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC and NC State.
Nicole speaks on what it's like to be a Clinical Field Engineer, traveling and being in surgeries for work, and her experience with her company getting acquired by Hemostasis.

Erik Andersen, MS, BSN, RN was brought on to Cambridge Design Partnership's (CDP) Insight & Strategy and Human Factors teams as a seasoned critical care nurse working in both ER and ICU environments for nearly 10 years, and also as a 2021 grad of the MedTech Innovation and Entrepreneurship M.S. Program at the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at UNC and NC State.
As an Insights Research Associate at Cambridge Design Partnership, Erik helps CDP's clients with understanding the clinical-users’ and patient-users’ perspectives in medical device development. On this episode, Erik talks about his career path, current role, and the value he got from the MedTech program.

Andrew DiMeo, PhD, is a Health Innovator, Designer, Entrepreneur, Teacher & Student with roots in New York City's Film Industry and a 20+ year career in medical devices & diagnostics. His startup company, CanvasGT, was acquired by greenlight guru where he works as a product manager on a novel web app enabling meaningful creativity for medtech strategy. Andrew also serves as business advisor to NIH Programs including RADx, C3i, and Blueprint Neuro. As a professor at UNC & NC State, his students’ coursework led to multiple startups including 410-Medical, Contour Surgical, Augment Medical, Novocor Medical Systems, and MEDIC. Other notable experiences include co-founding Gilero, starting nonprofit trade association NCMD, serving as business advisor for the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation's "Coulter College," Director for Duke NeuroInnovations, Coach for Industrial Design Firm Trig, and developing the college course Real Social Change. Andrew joins the show to talk about how he developed the senior design capstone course at UNC and NC State, and one of the first of its kind. He shares his goals for the capstone, the structure, and some stories along the way.

2 - Master's vs. PhD: Reflections on both Paths with Travis McKay and Taylor Gabaldon
Travis McKay and Taylor Gabaldon met each other while pursuing their PhD's in Biomedical Engineering at North Carolina State University. While Travis chose to continue to pursue his PhD, Taylor switched out of the program and got his Master's in Biomedical Engineering. Travis and Taylor each discuss why they chose their path and have a healthy debate: Master's vs. PhD.

Travis McKay's PhD work is focused on biosensors. Before entering his PhD program, he got his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
Taylor Gabaldon is now a Design Engineer at Gilero. At the time of this recording, he worked as a Research & Development Engineer at WellAir. Before his Master's, Taylor got his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering at the University of New Mexico.
