#93: Hank Watt, Co-Founder and Owner of Nature's Wild Berry
Hank Watt is the Co-Founder and Owner of Nature's Wild Berry, a company he started because of his own health struggles and a desire to help others. Read his story below... My parents met in medical school. My grandparents met in medical school. Up until college, everyone thought that I was going into medicine. But I knew early on that the last thing I'd ever become is a MD. In my 20s my parents were diagnosed with cancer 18 months apart. Going through that taught me a lot. You can always look back and say those were the days - but if you don't have your health, you don't have a lot to look forward to. It was time for me to create myself and I needed to make some changes. I needed to make my health the priority it should have been. I had a lot of excuses why I was 250 lbs and a size 40. It was time to eliminate those and reduce the harm I'd caused. The thing about being an emotional eater is that you're constantly facing cravings. Will power and self-discipline have nothing to do with it. Sometimes all you can think about is taste. If I was going to succeed, I'd have to forget about controlling the cravings and figure out how to control my taste. Lucky for me, I had a new friend who had been making healthy food taste delicious for years. His family's restaurant, Planet Raw, was famous in San Francisco, Santa Monica and West Hollywood. If someone could help me, it'd be my friend, Juliano. Juliano ordered me these red berries I'd never eaten before. I had to try them because they sounded unreal, like the beans Jack used to climb the beanstalk. They promised to turn sour and tarty food sweet! How had I never heard of this? He made me a super healthy juice and took a sip. He made the bitter looking face. I ate a berry and took a sip. I couldn't believe it - it tasted different to me - it was so sweet! I started making a liter of this juice every day and lost 60 lbs in about 6 months. Today I'm 170 lbs and a size 32. Now I crave salads and smoothies and my sweet tooth is happy! Juliano and I are raising awareness about the non-gmo ledidi berry that we now call Nature's Wild Berry. #88: Andy Stein, Founder of Orphaned Starfish Foundation, on Building an Organization Helping 13,000+ Orphans, Victims of Abuse and At-Risk Children Worldwide
Andy Stein founded the Orphaned Starfish Foundation in 2001 to help orphans, victims of abuse and at-risk children worldwide escape their cycles of poverty and abuse through education and job training. From humble beginnings building a small computer vocational training center in an orphanage for young victims of abuse in Santiago, Chile, he has built the Foundation to now serve over 13,000 children in 62 programs in 27 countries: Argentina, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Honduras, Bolivia, Chile, Brazil, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Ecuador, Haiti, Cambodia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Uruguay, American Samoa & Nepal. Andy has partnered with local partners in each of these countries, including Save the Children, Rotary Club, and USAID. "Tio Andy! Tio Mago!" Andy makes yearly visits to each Orphaned Starfish program. Mago is Spanish for Magician. He brings a magic show complete with balloon animals for all the children. (His highest amount recorded was 1,000 balloon animals in one sitting.) His visits also allow for a personal connection not only to the children but to the institutions and their directors and teachers. Every visit helps OSF learn what is needed at our programs so we may better serve these children. Every trip also allows for new program scouting. For his work helping the children of the favelas of Brazil, Andy was awarded an Honorary Citizenship in Rio De Janeiro by their Congress. In the United States, he has also been awarded the Jefferson Award for Community Service, the key to the city of Miami Beach, and several other state and local honors. He and the Orphaned Starfish Foundation have been featured on CBS News, Fox News, ABC News, Telemundo and Univision as well as in the Wall Street Journal, Miami Herald, Star Ledger, Jewish Week and US Magazine. Andy has also been a member of the Benefit Committees for Aleh Foundation, National Academy for the Arts, US Doctors for Africa, and Harlem’s Playing 2 Win Foundation. Prior to his work with Orphaned Starfish, Andy was active in Special Olympics, Rotary Club and Counterpart International. Visit the Orphaned Starfish Website and donate today!
