This project features different fire departments across the State of NJ that were chosen to be featured in this joint project. As the NJ Pierce Mfg. dealership, apparatus were chosen to be highlighted on the calendar. Each apparatus has a history behind it and a story to tell. The Behind the Department feature this month includes Chief of Department Henry Richard and Battalion Chief Joe Faugno.

324. "Optics vs. Reality" - Jennifer Osborne
Engineer Jennifer Osborne is fierce and committed. Her love for the fire service is trumped by her love of the process. This NJ native went all in, finding mentors who helped her find her way navigating a career she knew nothing about in Clark County, NV. Jennifer believes in the process and this is done through education which in her words is the best way to achieve diversity. So many come to the job without prior experience or knowledge of what the fire service is all about. Jennifer helps run the "Beyond Explorers" program which addresses this issue. The next step after the young explorer program is taking interested people and educating them about the job, expectations, terminology and all the other aspects of the job we take for granted. This program creates a solid base for those that want to pursue the fire service by giving them the tools they need before taking the leap. Jennifer pulls no punches and has a great story to tell. Her all in attitude is certainly representative of what we need to push this job forward.

He had a great officer spot and was happy with leading his company. But we need solid firefighters and good leaders to step up and have a seat at the table. We need these people to help keep command staffs grounded and in touch with the actual day to day.
