Arto Saari
For my 200th episode I welcome a photographer that I’ve been looking forward to speaking with for years by the name of Arto Saari. Arto is originally from Seinajoki,Finland and currently resides in Hawaii. Arto has worked with clients such as Vogue, Men’s Health,New Balance, Nixon watches, Volcom, and Juice Magazine to name a few. In this interview I speak to Arto about how he first discovered photography while touring the world as a professional skateboarder and I also speak to Arto about some of his recent work photographing surfing on the North Shore of Hawaii. Beyond being an accomplished and talented photographer Arto spent nearly 2 decades as one of the worlds top professional skateboarders having been awarded Thrasher Magazines 2001 Skater of the year. I grew up watching Arto’s skating in legendary videos such as Menekmati and Flip’s Sorry video. David Deal
On today’s podcast I speak with David Deal who is an intellectual property attorney specializing in copyright infringement matters on behalf of photographers and businesses throughout the US and Europe. Prior to becoming a lawyer David spent nearly 20 years working as a freelance photographer working with top publications and newspapers so he has a deep understanding of copyright issues that professional photographers deal with running a business. In this interview I speak to David about what lead him to a career in law and ways photographers can best protect their work from copyright infringement. I also speak to David about his work on the case of the late photographer Vivian Maier that he’s been working on for years. Copyright infringement is something that most photographers will deal with at some point in their careers so I was happy to get a chance to speak with a legal expert about ways to protect our work so I hope you enjoy this conversation and thanks for listening.

Rachel Bujalski
On today’s podcast I speak with photographer Rachel Bujalski. Rachel has worked with clients such as National Geographic, The New York Times, ESPN, and WIRED to name a few. In this interview I speak to Rachel about her experience living on a sailboat for 3 years and photographing a project about people living off the grid in alternative housing which was published by National geographic. I also speak to Rachel about her approach to writing and specifically an article she wrote and photographed for the NY Times on the unhoused crisis in California with over 150,000 people living in shelters or outdoors on the streets. In 2020 Rachel won an Emmy for her documentary work with ESPN and was also named one of The 30 : New and Emerging photographers to watch out for. Jai Lennard

William Albert Allard
On today’s podcast I speak with photographer William Albert Allard. Bill started his career at National Geographic in 1964 and has contributed to 44 Geographic articles as a staff, freelance, and contract photographer & writer. In this interview I speak to Bill about his first assignment for Nat Geo documenting Amish culture in rural Pennsylvania as well as his approach to gaining the trust of his subjects. Bill is well known for his photos of the American west documenting cowboys, ranchers, and the rural culture of places such as Montana, Wyoming ,and Nevada. I’ve always enjoyed Bill’s work for the richness in color and his ability to really immerse himself into whatever subject he’s photographing. William Albert Allard was recently awarded the lifetime achievement award from the National Geographic society and is largely regarded as one of the greatest living photographers working today.
