167: A Conversation About Urban Poling And The Many Ways It Can Help Your Neuro Clients

We’re doing something a little different on today’s show! Are you using poles with your neuro clients? Using poles can be a great way for your clients to get a full body workout, increase intensity during therapeutic activities, navigate difficult terrain, improve arm swing, assist with balance, and improve gait. But not all poles are created equal, so we needed to learn more!   We invited 2 of our Sparkies (aka NeuroSpark members) to the show to have a genuine conversation about Urban Poling so we could all learn more! Han Ngyuen, PT, DPT, NCS, owner of Neubility Rehab in Florida reached out to us wanting to learn more about Urban Poling. We decided the best thing to do was to invite her and Joy Cochran, PT, DPT, CEEAA owner of JOY Explorations in Wisconsin and master trainer for Urban Poling to the I Love Neuro podcast so we could record the conversation so everyone could learn more! In the show you’ll learn the difference between Activator Poles and other poles, the benefits of using poles, how to use them (for fitness, as an assistive device, etc), who should use poles, ideas for balance, freezing of gait, and fitness and more! 166: Improving Gait Outcomes With The NewGait Device

On today’s show we interview Benga Adeeko, the CEO of MQT Innovations, maker of the NewGait device, an innovative gait rehab device. An engineer by background, Benga accidentally stumbled into the rehab world with his product that was originally designed to help athletes sprint faster when a physical therapist tried the device on her patient with an incomplete spinal cord injury. Pre-NewGait the patient’s walking was extremely limited, but after training with the NewGait she was able to complete a 5K and has since recovered function fully. We asked Benga all about how the device works, who it works best for, can patients don/doff it, how does it fit into the plan of care, and more! It is so helpful to learn all about the things that are out there to assist our patients with their recovery. Sometimes as a clinician the right tool can help accelerate a patient's progress, and this may be one of them for you like it's shaping up to be for Erin’s client!
