Mike Goral: Excessive Talking

Mike Goral is someone I have only met once, haven't seen in 7 years but we have a long track record of working together. Long before the pandemic taught us to work apart, Mike and I, along with Jamie Watson and Evan Surminski would all collaborate to make audio magic in radio. Since then, all four of us have continued on creative paths that involve voiceover. Albeit, Evan produces still, and Matt started a podcast company. Mike's career in entertainment began at as a part-time assistant at Energy 108 under the guidance of Scot Turner. After several years as a full-time commercial producer and getting to work with amazing voiceover talent like the late Bumper Morgan and Dude Walker, Mike became a voice actor himself. In this episode, you'll hear us share some voice and imaging tips for radio and beyond. I asked Mike what he's been up to and why he moved to Arizona. Ironically, it's one the places I enjoy traveling too, and I shared a few of my favourite food stops on the episode page.If you would like to have Mike Image your radio station.... you can reach him through his website. Montana Getty: Journalism, Sports, Politics

Montana Getty has multiple passions for sports, media and politics flowing through her blood. Her grandfather is the late Don Getty, premiere of Alberta from 1985 to 1992, and quarterback of the Edmonton (then) Eskimos starting in 1955. Rarely does your family play into the context of a podcast episode, but given that the Getty name has so much to do with sport, politics, Alberta, oil, and now media. In this episode, you will hear why Montana chose a career in broadcasting and how she fulfils her other passions like sport and politics. Her broadcast career has gone from NAIT, to the streets of Edmonton, to Dawson Creek and now to Saskatoon. We also covered how she manages to keep her journalism work positive. We also talked about how she has to overcome harassment on the job, and perceived journalistic imbalances and misconceptions because of her family name. Montana did share what gets discussed at the holiday table, and why she loves the New York Yankees. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rob Braide: Broadcaster, Musicologist, Charcutier, Cook and Sometimes Baker

There's about a dozen people I know where if I sit down for a long conversation with them, I am going to come away infinitely smarter and with lots to think about. Rob Braide has always been on that hit list. Whether we were having a drink or eating some of his wonderful cooking, or listening to his latest musical find, I was going to come away with more.In this episode you are going to hear a lot about Montreal and CHOM from the 1970's, his move from CHOM as program director to General manager of CJAD/FM96 in 1986, and CHOM's eventual return under his supervision in 2002. We talk about how French and English co-existed on CHOM in the 70's... until it didn't, why that was and the amazing unintended consequences of that government decision that shaped Francophone radio and culture in Quebec. We also talked about the unique musical sound of Montreal, why there is so much traffic, and the contributions the National Music Centre in Calgary is making to all Canadians. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Rob Walch: Putting Podcast Into Perspective

Rob Walch is the VP of Podcast Relations at Libsyn. He made an appearance on our show back in 2018, and we were long overdue to have him back given the changing nature of the podcast world. During Rob's session at Podcast Movement in August, he manoeuvred his way through his presentation to debunk many of the marketing myths that are propelled across the internet. Myths like Rating and Reviewing the podcast will help it be discovered, and that there are over two million podcasts. (While true - only 325,000 are active)In this episode you will hear Rob debunk myths and put podcasting into perspective. Did you know the Super Bowl generates as much money in a day as the Podcast Industry does in a year? And yes, having a presence on YouTube will help your podcast get discovered. You're also likely doing better than you think in regards to your podcast's performance. We also go deep on podcast apps, podcast websites and talk about Apple's plans for ios in the future. Rob knows Apple products as he hosts Today in iOS.Rob host The Feed along with Elsie Escobar and it's one of the podcasts I listen to every other week to keep my view of the podcast industry in perspective. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tara Sands: A Voice For Everything

Tara Sands was an imaging voice for a radio station I was programming in my radio days. It always exciting to hire new voice talent to put a fresh sound to your station. Her work extends well beyond FM, into some of the things you might hear like cartoons and commercials, but also in Anime, Audiobooks and now Podcast. If there's audio to be recorded, she is likely recording it.In this episode, you will hear about Tara's teenage years in New Jersey where she took in a few Bruce Springsteen concerts and would take trips to New York to perform in theatre. We also spoke about the joyful consequences of popularity when you are a voice of Bulbasaur on the popular cartoon Pokemon. There's a whole world of celebrity conventions and your social media changes forever. We also talked at length about the pandemic and its affects on the work that she does. For instance, Tara has not visited a studio since March 2020 and made significant upgrades to her studio in order to make it "hard wired" for internet connectivity and upgraded for speed. Voiceover talent will especially love this deep dive into her work life and career. There''s an awful lot of things that I wanted to ask after the interview was over - but that's what the episode page is for. If your radio station would like to have Tara as an imaging voice, please reach out to her via her webpage.Check out all of Tara's credits in the Internet Movie Database. And Tara's podcast credits here on Podchaser. Susan Knight: Strong Female Energy

Susan Knight and I haven't seen each other since Labour Day 1995. We had just come back from the Molson Polar Ice Party in Tuktoyaktuk, NWT. She was working at 92 Rock in Sudbury and from there went to Chatham, Ontario and then Mountain-FM in Squamish, B.C. The rest is a blur but there were stints in Kelowna, Calgary and Victoria, B.C. whee she is now covering a maternity leave at 91.3 The Zone. You know what? She genuinely loves radio. In this episode, you will hear how much she loves radio: Everything from its ability to connect whether it is voicetracked or live; in a disaster or at 5 in the morning. We also talk about her venture into voiceover where she records audiobooks and radio ads for clients. She also admirably answered the hard questions such as her favourite morning show-co-hosts and how women are succeeding in radio despite the well documented obstacles. We also talked about how Susan fell in love with a pair of Doc Marten boots she saw on our trip to the Polar Ice Party in 1995, and her quest to find them in 2021.Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

September: The Fall of Radio

September is an exciting month that comes complete with the hopes and promise of a new year. I took some time to hang with family recently and take what is normally a slow time of the podcast year to unwind a bit. I took some radio notes and read a few things and am sharing what came bubbling up. Think of it as some sort of lame meditation. In this episode, you'll hear why the word retirement pops up when long time staff depart a station, are talent being properly compensated for their social media activity, National Radio Day is stupid and needs initiative, and our podcast was reviewed by Phil Edmonds and we thought it was awesome to be recommended. We al so made mention of Perry Michael Simon's piece in All Access.com. Click here to read it. I also made mention that you could sign up for the newsletter. You can do that here. http://eepurl.com/dBsIa1And the PM21 notes will be forthcoming in the next few days. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Morgan McCarthy: Wisconsin Radio Online Everywhere

Morgan McCarthy is the host of the 715 Newsroom, a local Wisconsin online radio news source that provides news in the Chippewa Valley area in a way that is never boring. They also have a podcast called News Makers that is currently on its 22nd episode. You'll hear Morgan's voice on radio shows owned by Midwest Family Broadcasting all over Wisconsin.Morgan's original break in radio (WDRK 999 The Carp) was with Maverick Media. After she left, there was an ownership transfer to the current company Midwest Family Broadcasting-and this is the regime that brought Morgan out of "mic/mom-retirement" and back into the radio world. Love to the local GM and management team, respect to the company. In this episode, Morgan explains her not-at-all planned saunter into working in radio through her serendipitous acceptance to Emerson College for communication, how radio became her passion, her love for the Green Bay Packers, and so much more.In addition to other market work and remote news clients, Morgan is following the advice of peers and just tipping her toes over into voiceover work. For more info on all the endeavours Morgan is currently undertaking, visit her website: morganmccarthy.com.Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Chris Byrne: No Longer Unknown

Chris Byrne is the afternoon drive host at Pure Country 89 in Windsor. He believes a relative unknown in the radio business but we have memories and remember him changing the sign in Fort McMurray when its residents returned after 2016 fires caused a mass evacuation. Chris was let go in 2020 from his morning show position in 92.7 Rock in Sudbury, but has happily resurfaced at Pure Country. In this episode, you'll hear about his big regret when he didn't take my advice in 2019, and he tells me why he has (and I should) embrace the country radio and the Bachelor Franchise. We also dig into what ails Rock Radio and how the last decade differs from the one before that. We also talk about some of the great radio promotions and stunts that have been by initiated by talent across the country. You will find more on our episode page. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
