The Sixth Very Terry Christmas

Every year, Terry Dimonte and I get together for some Christmas cheer. This year we wound up talking a little more about podcasting as he and Ted Bird have recently launched their new show. Terry has recently moved to British Columbia with his wife Jessica and Terry recounts his first few weeks in the area battling torrential rains. As tradition has it, if there is a weather event, Terry will find it.We also made mention of voiceover professional and awesome cousin of mine, Geoff Allan who is the voice of their show.I hope you enjoy our annual conversation and from everyone here that works on the show, Taylor, Courtney, and Evan - Merry Christmas! And a Merry Christmas from the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Gillian Foote: Going Back to Hali

Last April. Gillian Foote returned to her home province of Nova Scotia after spending the better part of two decades in Edmonton at 100.3 The Bear. James Cridland: A Trip Through Podland

We loved having James Crildland on our show back in 2018 when we fussed about podcast discovery when there were a half million podcasts in the universe. There are now 2.5 million and we have so many more questions to ask.In this episode, I get a little help from my Podcast SuperFriends Jag in Detroit and Catherine O’Brien who are heavy consumers of James’ Podnews and Podland, the latter now into its second year. we discuss Apple v. Spotify, what Indie podcasters are still missing out on, and how North America radio is faring overall. We also get into the weeds on some ad tech stuff that should fascinate you, even if terms like “dynamic ad insertion” and AI make your eyes glaze over. You get a lot of junk email everyday, but this will not be one of them Subscribe to Podnews and get the latest on everything happening in the world of podcast. There's also a companion podcast available everywhere... I listen to it daily in a flash briefing via an Alexa Skill. We also discussed the first year of Podland, which is co-hosted by James and Sam Sethi. My thanks also to Jon Gay From Jag in Detroit Podcasts and Catherine O'Brien From Branch Out Programs for lending some questions to the episode. The Return of Matty Staudt

We had Matty Staudt back on the show in July of 2019, when he was heading up Jam Street Media after leaving iHeart as the head of podcasting. In that episode, we talked about his early podcast career, which dates back to Stitcher in 2008, how he produced the G. Gordon Liddy Show, and played the hits on great radio stations across America. Since then, he has been building some of the best branded podcasts out there for clients like Ford, Nissan, and MAC Cosmetics. And then came the news that Jam Street had been acquired by Amaze Media Labs. Cool! Matty is now the chief development officer at Amaze Media Labs, and we caught up with him to talk about our two favourite subjects…. podcast and broadcast. This show was recorded using Streamyard and there’s a video version for those who like to consume their podcasts that way.Check out some of the great stuff happening at Amaze Media Labs here. Also there is a video version of the show here. Sharon Hyland: La Reine Du Rock

Around Montreal, mention the words "Queen of Rock" and that title goes to Sharon Hyland, longtime on air host at CHOM-FM. Last month she eclipsed 25 years of broadcasting at the legendary radio station. And while her name might not get lumped in with the CHOM Alumni who came before her, (just yet) her knowledge of rock and the station's more recent history is second to none. In this episode, you'll hear why Sharon went into radio, and how her path from Algonquin College led her to Ottawa's legendary rock station CHEZ 106, and then later to CHOM. We break down the various eras of ownership and throw a few PD's under the bus along the way. We also talk about the friendships along the way including that with Steve Anthony and Pete Marier, and also how cancer has touched her family deeply. Callie and Jeff: All Upside

The copy just screams off the page: She was a blogger and social media maven. He, a former morning radio host. Together they struck out on their own and created The Upside. Callie and Jeff Dauler started their podcast when Jeff's radio career abruptly changed in 2019 from Star 94.1 in Atlanta. Their success could be considering "overnight" by podcast standards. In this episode, you'll hear how Callie and Jeff met, and how they transitioned both their skill sets into creating a show that supports their family. You'll hear how they monetize not just the show, but their social media handles, and how they engage with listeners beyond the RSS Feed. We also discuss how they have used conventional and unconventional podcast strategies to support their brand. They will also tell you how you are doing your merch incorrectly. (Secrets get shared)Do you want to know what I really love? How well they have covered off the details. A nice website. A phone number where I can all and participate in the show. (Try it... 1-800-434-5454) Nice Merchandise. And within the show, care and consideration for the listener when it comes to production.Callie and Jeff were apart of Podcast Business Journal's How to Make Money in Podcasting series last July. You can read a recap of their session right here. Ryan Jespersen: Real Talk About Real Talk

Ryan Jespersen is one of the great broadcast to podcast success stories. After being relieved from the coveted 9 to noon position at the venerable 630 CHED in Edmonton last year, Ryan hatched a plan to move his audience from terrestrial to digital, and at the same time fill a need for real talk in the digital space. In this episode, you will hear how Ryan got into radio i(and later TV) n Red Deer, Alberta, moved north to Edmonton where he hosted Breakfast television and eventually on to Corus owned 630 CHED. We spoke about Alberta politics and how it compared to when I was there in 1990's when Ralph Klein's Conservatives held a 40+ year stranglehold on the province - and how it devolved. We also talked about how he monetizes the show, how he moved people to digital, and what the goals of the show are in the future. You can find more about Real Talk with Ryan Jespersen on our episode page.We also spoke about my friend Christian Zyp who was a guest on the Sound Off Podcast a few months ago. Zyp appeared on Ryan's show and you can see appearance here. Mike Goral: Excessive Talking

Mike Goral is someone I have only met once, haven't seen in 7 years but we have a long track record of working together. Long before the pandemic taught us to work apart, Mike and I, along with Jamie Watson and Evan Surminski would all collaborate to make audio magic in radio. Since then, all four of us have continued on creative paths that involve voiceover. Albeit, Evan produces still, and Matt started a podcast company. Mike's career in entertainment began at as a part-time assistant at Energy 108 under the guidance of Scot Turner. After several years as a full-time commercial producer and getting to work with amazing voiceover talent like the late Bumper Morgan and Dude Walker, Mike became a voice actor himself. In this episode, you'll hear us share some voice and imaging tips for radio and beyond. I asked Mike what he's been up to and why he moved to Arizona. Ironically, it's one the places I enjoy traveling too, and I shared a few of my favourite food stops on the episode page.If you would like to have Mike Image your radio station.... you can reach him through his website. In this episode, you will hear why Montana chose a career in broadcasting and how she fulfils her other passions like sport and politics. Her broadcast career has gone from NAIT, to the streets of Edmonton, to Dawson Creek and now to Saskatoon. We also covered how she manages to keep her journalism work positive. We also talked about how she has to overcome harassment on the job, and perceived journalistic imbalances and misconceptions because of her family name. Montana did share what gets discussed at the holiday table, and why she loves the New York Yankees. Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
