247: Featured Performer: Jessica Hull. AUS Record Holder 1500m, 3000m, 5000m
If you are a keen follower of Australian athletics, Jessica Hull needs no introduction. Earlier in 2020, Jessica went on an Australian national record setting streak, kicking it off with a 5000m new national record of 14:43.80 at the diamond league in Monaco, followed one month later by the national record in the 1500m 4:00.42 set at the diamond league in Berlin. And then just less than two weeks later, Jessica ran another Australian National record in the 3000m in Doha 8:36.03. Now the 5000m record was an 18 year record held by a prior featured performer of the show, Benita Willis, Episode 20 and Jess’s 1500m time has her poised to be potentially the first Australian woman to ever run sub four minutes in the coming years for the 1500m. Needless to say, Jessica is a huge talent and on this episode, you'll hear Jess share around the highs, lows and learnings, the origins of her athletic days, the role of her family and support team in helping Jess perform at her physical best, the influence of time spent on scholarship at the University of Oregon in the US, the role of strength and conditioning in Jess’s performances, fueling for the work required and Jess survives the physical performance round and issues a doubleheader on the physical challenge for the week. 246: Featured Performer Miles Stewart (OAM), CEO Triathlon Australia, OLY, 1991 World Triathlon Champion
As a junior triathlete through the 90s, Miles Stewart was one of the most prominent names in the sport. Earlier this year in 2020 Miles was recognised with an Order of Australia medal (OAM) for his service to triathlon and sports administration a fitting honour for someone who has been around the sport for 35 years plus. Prior to Miles’ administrative career Miles’s sporting resume was so impressive. Miles became the world champion at 20 years of age in 1991. Prior to that, as you'll hear miles outline he had great success from the get go racing immediately as a professional athlete on commencing the sport as a junior. Miles was part of triathlons debut in the Olympic Games as part of the Australian team at the Sydney Olympic 2000 games, crossing the line as the first place male finisher in sixth place. In addition, Miles picked up a silver medal at the 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games triathlon, 8 World Cup Triathlon wins, 1 World Series win in 1996 and 2 ITU World Championship bronze medals in 1998 and 1999. Of course, Miles became the world champion in the 1991 World Triathlon Championships held on the Gold Coast at just 20 years of age. And quite incredibly, as you'll hear Miles outline, he was a member of the Australian Elite Team for the World Championships across 16 consecutive years. During today's episode, you'll hear miles touch on the highs, the lows and the many learnings from his 20 year career as a professional triathlete. You'll hear Miles mention that he never raced in the juniors instead, he was straight to the professional ranks. 243: Featured Performer: Camille Herron 'Queen of Ultra Running' 50k, 100k, 24hr World Champion + 5x World Record Holder
Camille Herron's bio is exemplary. Camille is the 50k, 100k, 24hr World Champion holder of five world records, winner of the comrades marathon and at the time of recording, Camille was just weeks away from attempting to improve her 12 hour and 100 mile world records. Camille broke the 100 mile trail world women's record by 1hr, running 12 hrs 42mins at her first attempt ever running 100 miles. One month later, she broke the 12 hr world record. To give you some insight into just how fast Camille runs these world records, the 50 mile world record was set at 5hrs 38mins which is equivalent to a 4:12 per km pace. The 100 mile road trail world record 12hrs 42mins, was run at a 4:43 per km pace and the 24 hour road record a distance covered of 270 km was run at a 5:20 per km pace. Meanwhile, the equivalent track record that Camille set 262km, that's right running around a track for 24 hours, was set at a 5:30 per km split pace. Camille shares around the highs, lows and learnings of her career. She's also been an academic researcher in the field of bone health, and you'll hear Camille share tips around how to look after our bones as endurance athletes from her science and also her running perspective. The key role that the menstruation cycle needs to play for female athletes, structuring a training cycle and what key sessions need to be included, how Camille has been able to run 160 km per week / 100 mile weeks consecutively since November 2006. Phil Burt was the British Cycling head physiotherapist for 12 years and a consultant physiotherapist for team Sky Cycling for five years and across those years, the team's collectively accrued more than 30 Olympic gold medals, 5 Tour de France victories and more than 100 World Championship victories. Phil consulted with the who's who of world cycling across that time. Phil is now based in private practice, and he's taking his many learnings to the world of cycling through his clinic, Phil consults with British triathlon and has authored two very successful books “bike fit” and “strengthen conditioning for cyclists”, he’s a UCI advisor on positional rules and also sits on the Redell World Advisory Board. 241: Featured Performer: Georgia Taylor-Brown, 2020 World Triathlon Series Champion
Georgia Taylor-Brown took out the recent World Triathlon series one day championship held in Rotterdam being crowned the 2020 World Triathlon Series Champion. In 2012, Georgia won the Junior World Duathlon Championships in Nancy, Georgia then burst into the World Triathlon scene in 2017 winning the Madrid World Cup by almost a minute, with an incredible run off the bike before finishing fourth in the under 23 World Championships also at Rotterdam that year. In 2018 and 2019, Georgia finished third overall in the World Triathlon series rankings across those respective years. Georgia has picked up multiple podiums across World Triathlon series races, and in 2019 at the Tokyo Olympic test event, crossed the line with fellow British compatriot Jess Liam in a victory at the time that was later disputed on a technicality.
