257: Featured Performer: Emma Carney. Multiple World Champion, Sport Australia & World Triathlon Hall of Fame Member

Emma recently released her autobiography “Hard Wired Life, Death and Triathlon”. It's a book that I recommend for the bookshelf of every endurance sports enthusiast, and particularly every triathlon lover. Growing up as a triathlete in the 90s Emma Carney was certainly a name and a presence gracing the covers of triathlon magazines, TV screens wherever the triathlon enthusiast looked. Emma came from a junior running / athletics background, where she represented Australia twice at the world cross country championships in 1994 and 1995, and then again in the Ekiden Relay in 1993 and 1994.  You'll hear today how Emma turned to the sport of triathlon and in just 18 months took out the 1994 world ITU international triathlon union championship in Auckland by a record margin at that stage of 2 minutes and 12 seconds. Following that very impressive international debut taking out a world title, Emma recorded seven ITU World Cup wins in 1996 and collectively across her career 19 World Cup wins. From June 1995 to April 1997, Emma recorded an unbroken string of 12 straight ITU World Cup wins. Emma was the World Cup champion in 1995, 1996 and 1997. And of course the ITU now World Triathlon world champion in 1994 and then again in 1997. Subsequently, Emma was inducted into the Australian sporting Hall of Fame in 2016. On this featured performer episode, you'll hear Emma truly share around the highs, the lows and the learnings from what was a remarkable career and a remarkable chapter in Australian triathlon and World Triathlon history. 256: Expert Edition: Dan Plews (PhD) Applied Exercise Physiologist, EndureIQ Founder. ‘High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) for Endurance Athletes’

Dr Dan Plews is the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon age group world record holder with a blistering 8:24 set in 2018. That's 8 hours and 24 minutes by way of bio alongside Dan's own athletic achievements. He has a PhD in exercise physiology, which looked at heart rate variability to assess training adaptation. He's coached three professional Ironman triathletes to sub eight hours, including Terenzo Boyzone, Yon van Berkel and Tim van Berkel., Dr Plews has consulted with New Zealand rowing and currently serves a role of high performance manager for Team Emirates, New Zealand in the Americas Cup. And of course, Dan is the founder of Endure IQ, a fantastic online endurance coaching community and service. Craig Kirkwood is an incredible athlete himself having represented New Zealand six times across athletics and mountain running. Craig was a 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games New Zealand representative and boasts a marathon record of 2.13.07 set in Chicago. Now in a coaching capacity Craig coaches some of the hottest athletics and triathlon talent on the planet. Craig is a coach based out of New Zealand that ranges from juniors right through to recreational and recreational competitive age groupers, as well as some of the best in the business including prior featured performer of the physical performance show Hayden Wild from Episode 162 and alongside Hayden, Craig coaches up and coming New Zealand middle distance running star Sam Tanner, New Zealand 3000m champion and 1500m champion. On this episode, I share with you a conversation I recently had with Gold Coast based ear nose and throat surgeon Dr Dan Robinson on all things navigating nasal obstruction. One in three people experience nasal obstruction. Listen in as Dr Dan Robinson shares around the different types of nasal obstruction, how nasal obstruction presents in both children and fully grown adults, the different types of obstructive sleep apnea; central and peripheral and how each of those presents, the physiology of breathing and why when we exercise most of it occurs through the mouth yet that's reversed when we sleep with the bulk of breathing happening through our nose. Gustav Iden is the 70.3 2019 Triathlon World Champion. Several weeks ago, Gustav Iden took the spoils and victory in what was arguably the most stacked and deep triathlon long course field in the history of the sport by taking out the PTO Championships at Challenge Daytona. Gustav is from Bergen, Norway, where he trains alongside the Norwegian powerhouse team including prior featured guests from Episode 117 - Kristian Blummenfelt and Triathlon Norway Head Coach and Sports Director of the Norwegian Triathlon Federation, Arild Tveiten, who we featured on episode 224. In addition to Gustav's success across the 70.3 and long course world of triathlon, Gustav was also part of the historic Norwegian Podium Clean Sweep at the World Triathlon Series leg held in Bermuda in 2019, where he took out third place. In 2019 Gustav was also fourth across the line in the Tokyo Olympic test event. In episode 248 of The Physical Performance Show Brad Beer shares a conversation with Rachel Neylan, Olympic & Professional Cyclist, 2012 UCI World Championship Silver on this featured performer episode. Rachel represented Australia at the Olympic Games in Rio in 2016, which was a combination of a childhood dream. In 2012 Rachel picked up a silver medal in the UCI World Cycling Championships.
