S3 Ep. 14: A Deep Dive into Luteinized Unruptured Follicle (LUF) Syndrome
Today on The Hormone Genius Podcast, we're diving into a highly specific but deeply important topic: Luteinized Unruptured Follicle (LUF) Syndrome. While this condition may not apply to every listener, for those it does affect, understanding it is crucial.
Every menstrual cycle, your body naturally forms a cyst on one ovary called a follicle, which grows to around 2.2 cm and then releases an egg during ovulation. This is a normal and essential part of the reproductive cycle. However, sometimes this process doesn’t go as planned. There are many types of ovarian cysts, and when they become abnormal, they can interfere with ovulation, cause pain, and even impact fertility.
A LUF cyst occurs when the follicle matures and undergoes luteinization — but fails to release the egg. Instead, it fills with fluid or debris and continues to grow. While this condition is often overlooked, it can have real implications for women struggling with unexplained infertility or cycle irregularities.
In this episode, Teresa and Jamie unpack what LUF is, how it differs from other ovarian cysts, how it can be identified, and what treatment options or considerations might be helpful. Our goal is to equip you with knowledge, because understanding your body is the first step toward advocating for the care you deserve.
