EP115: Raise Your Coaching Game and High Performance Secrets from the Best w/ Alan Stein Jr.

When at the airport I always make a pitstop at the bookstore. While traveling to a speaking engagement, a book title entered my line of vision: "Raise Your Game.” As I read the cover, chapter topics and testimonials I knew I had to get it. Especially given it was from the world of basketball. From first crack, I couldn't put it down. I finished it in two days and knew I needed to get the author, Alan Stein Jr on the podcast to talk about the principles. I later realized both Alan and I were featured in Anthony Renna’s book, “Be Like The Best”, which led me to connecting with Alan... and here we are. Alan is a world-renowned coach, speaker and author. He spent 15+ years working the highest performing basketball players on the planet and now teaches audiences how to utilize the same strategies in business that elite athletes use to perform at a world-class level. Alan specializes in improving individual and organizational leadership, performance and accountability. He inspires and empowers everyone he works with to take immediate action and improve mindset, habits and productivity. In this podcast we talk about principles for success, coaching, and leadership and the values and behaviors that support it to help you raise your game. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: 1. The two foundational principles that success is built on and that you must adhere to if you’re going to win long-term. 2. What Alan learned from Kobe Bryant about the basics, that made him the best in the world at his craft. 3. Why knowing yourself first is crucial to creating a change in your life and business, as well as impacting others. 4. The basics of what you’re trying to improve—whether it be your craft, your business, your marriage—and how to break them down into skill work. 5. How Alan addresses “shiny object syndrome” and lack of attention by using praise, setting expectations and defining a role. 6. What not to do to ensure that you're not being disrespectful to the process, your craft, and the game. Whatever your game may be. 7. The importance of environment when it comes to buying into the basics and why you should seek out environments that trigger positive behaviors. 8. How to get rid of distractions so you can perform at the highest level. The most disciplined people have the least amount of distractions. 9. Create systems and processes to make sticking to habits easier. We share examples. 10. How Kevin Durant transformed himself after hating strength training but still showed up weekly to put in work. 11. People take what you do over what you say. Why you should model the behavior of your role models, and how this will help you become a high character person. 12. Alan's exercise to discover your values and the process steps to become that person. 13. What to do when someone has not bought into the team, and the vision. 14. The self-check and the responsibility you must take as a coach to help your clients and people around you become better. Nix blaming, making excuses, and complaining. 15. The keys to sustaining a standard of excellence like Dematha High School and how you can apply it to yourself and your business. 16. Why the role you and each person on your team plays must be respected, valued and appreciated. Everyone is integral to the final picture. 17. EP114: Training, Nutrition & Lifestyle Wisdom from 25 Years of Coaching and Writing w/ Bryan Krahn

Bryan and I met almost 13 years ago at a Perform Better Summit through our mutual friend Nate Green. At that point in time Bryan was writing a lot of quality fitness articles for top publications. I really enjoyed his writing style: real world wisdom from training his real world clients. The thing about Bryan is that while he wrote for T-Nation, Mens Health, Mens Fitness, Bodybuilding.com, Ask Men, and many more, he had so much actual coaching experience and real world results with his clients. Not to mention himself. He’s 47, jacked and lean. Today he continues to write, train, and have a successful online coaching business. In this podcast episode we dive into the principles of the “How” in coaching to get the best possible results with your clients; whether face to face, or online. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: 1. How Bryan started training people but kept it as a side hustle. Believe it or not, he didn’t believe he could make a career out of it. We discuss what changed his mind. 2. Why it’s important to go past the sets and reps to help people truly transform. 3. Why you MUST build a foundation and understanding the body, movement, program design, etc. AKA "the buy" in to coaching. 4. Why you should always start with finding out a client's lifestyle before building their program. e.g. “How do they go about their day?” 5. Why you can’t take your clients word at the height of their excitement and motivation when it comes to what they’re able to commit to. We discuss how you uncover the reality. 6. Why it’s so much better to build on success than having to pull back when you start training clients. We share out mistakes so you can avoid making the same ones. 7. What the ideal training frequency is for different goals, from muscle building, to fat loss, no matter your age. 8. What the “cardio placeholder” is and how it creates better results for clients. 9. Why walking is key to feeling better when you’re pushing your diet (and how it helps you physiologically unpack things). 10. Whether or not age should dictate the exercises you should choose, and the formula for not getting injured and continuing to progress. 11. Doing ramp sets, pushing to positive failure, not training for less than an hour, and other myths get put to the test by Bryan and myself. 12. The “not so cool” modalities that pay the biggest dividends but get missed so often. 13. How everything affects itself and why coaching is like a dance that you always have to assess. 14. 3 nutritional principles that will create success for your clients if you nail them. 15. How to take how a person who is currently living one way and gradually make it better (and why this is the key to success). 16. Why precision and being geeky on the numbers will most times hinder success when it comes to body transformations. 17. Why variability is NOT a good choice when people are looking to change their habits. 18. While simplicity and autonomy matter, creating rules for clients can be powerful. Bryan explain this concept. 19. The power of creating wins in a client's day to build from. And much more. EP110: The Language of Coaching & the Art and Science of Teaching Movement w/ Nick Winkelman

I’ve followed Nick’s work for over a decade after meeting him at the Perform Better Summit speaking on the topic of coaching. After every workshop that he hosted over the years, I always left a better coach—curious and thirsty for more. Nick has a ton of experience from studying and applying his knowledge in the field. His resume is evidence of this. Nick is he currently the head of athletic performance & science for the Irish Rugby Football Union. As a performance coach, Nick managed the speed and assessment component of the EXOS NFL Combine Development Program and supported many athletes across the NFL, MLB, NBA, National Sports Organizations, and Military. Due to his knowledge and real world application there’s no better person to have wrote the book, “The Language of Coaching”(which is truly a body of work and must for any coach). EP107: The 90% of What Works for 90% of the People in Training & Nutrition Dr. Andy Galpin

Andy Galpin, PhD, is a tenured Professor at the Center for Sport Performance at California State University, Fullerton. Galpin received an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Linfield College, a Master’s Degree in Human Movement Sciences from the University of Memphis, and a PhD in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University. He currently teaches and runs the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Lab at California State University, Fullerton. That will tell you he’s a smart guy, but Andy also understands the real world of training and nutrition and consults some of the world’s top athletes to elite performance levels. There are many reasons why I love the guy: he’s a great human, he loves strength and conditioning, he’s from Washington State and he loves hip-hop; which pretty much seals the deal for me. In this episode we dive into the principles of training and nutrition that are based on science but also work in the real world, how to spot B.S. and fake guru’s, and many insights on how to become a great coach in the real world and gets results with your clients. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: 1. Andy’s bulletproof bullshit detector to find out what advice is real and what is B.S. 2. The 3 pieces of evidence you want to look at when it comes to your certainty about claims in training, nutrition and supplementation. 3. My 80/20 rule of sticking with things I know work and testing out new methods, innovations and things I’ve learned. 4. The cook, the chef and the baker analogy and why you should start as a cook no matter what! 5. Why social media is skipping the cook portion of teaching and creating a lot of B.S. 6. Why you have to be crystal clear about what you want to achieve before you ever pick an exercise rep, set, or anything else. 7. Andy’s template for building an athlete of life, and what you should do weekly when it comes to training. 8. Why speed and power are SO important with the elderly population and how it can help you live longer and even prevent death. 9. The reason why high intensity training should be cut down by 50% or more (for most) to get the best results with health, fitness and performance. 10. How culture changed the shift of exercise popularity from cardio to bodybuilding, to high intensity exercise, to recovery and how to put the puzzle pieces together. 11. Why as a coach you shouldn't try to bring clients into your world but rather commit to stepping into theirs. 12. How to put the puzzle pieces of it all together while getting the clients input so you get better compliance and results. 13. Why Andy teaches his classes in a real world format to prepare coaches for the clients they’ll be dealing with. 14. What “defenders” are and what is stopping clients from succeeding; we discuss how to remove the obstacles rather that “tell people what to do.” 15. How Andy removed the barrier of an elite fighter to take their performance to the next level. 16. Once you realize that you’re really a detective you’ll become a better coach. 17. An exercise Andy gives to his students to help them learn to problem solve. 18. The nutrition principles that have withstood the test of time and will continue to work for you and your clients. And much more.
