"What to Expect From Your Strength Training Progress" with Exercise Physiologist, Rick Rignell
Have you ever wondered what your strength training progress might look like? When do you start building muscle? How much muscle can you build, and will you just get stronger forever? Who should you look to for an evidence-based approach to strength training progress? What does the scientific literature have to say about strength training progress over the course of a few months, a few years, or a lifetime? On this week's episode of "The Discover Strength Podcast," I sat down with Senior Exercise Physiologist Rick Rignell to discuss all things strength training progression. We look over what the relevant literature has to say in regards to how we adapt to exercise, and what we can expect in the short and long-term of our strength training careers.Rick and I describe in detail based on personal, anecdotal, and most importantly research-backed experience on what you can expect your own strength training progress to look like. This means from the day you step into the gym for the first time and start lifting weights, to your last workout ever at 100 years old before you finally kick the bucket. How can we expect our strength training progress to shift over the course of time, and how can we set realistic expectations of strength training progress outcomes. This is a great episode for new and long-time trainees, and anyone who's interested in what the journey might be like in their own strength training progress. "Valuable Supplements: Part II" with Dr. Stuart Phillips, PhD.
In this week's episode of the Discover Strength Podcast, I had the pleasure of being joined once again by Dr. Stuart Phillips.Dr. Phillips is a senior lecturer at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada. He is widely regarded as one of the preeminent researchers in the world on protein. In this week's episode we focus specifically on supplements. What works, what doesn't and what does the research say is worth spending your money on. The supplement industry is fraught with misinformation, disinformation and unfortunately outright lies. There are however, a few supplements backed by research and proven time and time again to be effective in muscle building. That list however, is very short, and because the industry is widely unregulated, it's important to know what is worth using and what can potentially hinder you, harm you, or will simply be a waste of time and money. In this episode Dr. Phillips in I discuss that short list of supplements we know work for sure. We also talk about some other supplements that may or may not have potential, and the rest unfortunately are for the most part, just fancy marketing. If you're interested in hearing our other episodes with Dr. Phillips, check out Season 2, Episode 9 (Here) and see links below for Dr. Phillips on previous seasons. "Getting to Failure & The Value of Supervision" with Senior Exercise Physiologist, Jake Picht
In this week's episode of "The Discover Strength Podcast" I sat down with Senior Exercise Physiologist and General Manager of Discover Strength Woodbury, Jake Picht. Jake and I discuss a concept known as "Reps In Reserve" and the idea that most trainees (even those with a lot of experience) are not great at predicting when they are approaching failure in their workouts. As we know, reaching or getting close to momentary muscle failure is extremely important to maximize the benefits of efficient, effective resistance training like clients participate in at Discover Strength.Jake and I also discuss why this makes supervision in your workouts so important. Not only does the research support that supervision improves your strength training outcomes, it's also one of the best ways to make sure you're working as hard as possible. I encourage you to share this episode with friends or loved ones who train on their own, and if they're interested in seeing the value of supervision, send them HERE, to sign up for a complimentary Discover Strength Introductory workout, in studio, or virtually!
