Interview with Valerie Broussard
We had the pleasure of interviewing Valerie Broussard over Zoom video! Platinum-certified singer, songwriter and powerhouse vocalist Valerie Broussard has today released the official music video for her single "Iris," a breathtaking rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls classic. Click HERE to watch. Inspired by a favorite lyric from the song, the video finds Valerie floating through the galaxy alone gazing down at the world below her. "The Goo Goo Dolls music video for 'Iris' is the first I ever truly fell in love with," Valerie shared. "When making my own video, I wanted to give an homage to theirs. In the original, Johnny is locked away in a tower, looking down upon the city below with various telescopes. I always felt like the concept made the lyrics, especially the line 'and I don't want the world to see me,' hit home. In my video, I used the same idea, only I'm looking down on the world from a space station." "Iris" is the first official single off Valerie's forthcoming debut EP Voyager due out this fall. It also marks the second time she's crossed paths with The Goo Goo Dolls after singing on "Money, Fame & Fortune" off their latest album Miracle Pill. Stay tuned for more news from Valerie soon. About Valerie Broussard: You can feel Valerie Broussard's dynamic vocals and emotionally charged songwriting in massive smash collaborations, through hundreds of film, television, and video game placements, projected from some of the biggest stages in the world, and within her solo output. Garnering just north of half a billion total streams, her voice and pen power Kygo's "Think About You" and "The Truth" as well as the 2019 League of Legends theme "Awaken" with Ray Chen. In May of this year, Valerie collaborated with ILLENIUM and Nurko on the track "Sideways," which she wrote as an ode to a friend who was struggling with mental health during the pandemic. It debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance / Electronic Songs chart. Her music rings out on tentpole programming across NETFLIX, The CW, ABC, Prime Video, SyFy, HBO, and more. Interview with Waxflower
We had the pleasure of interviewing Waxflower over Zoom video! Fresh from releasing a trio of standout singles that saw them conquer their debut headline shows in February 2020, including a sold-out hometown performance, Waxflower returned in June with their hard-hitting single, 'Sixteen Floors'. Released alongside the announcement of their signing to independent European label Rude Records (Saves The Day, Gideon, Blood Youth, Sleep On It), 'Sixteen Floors' clocked up support from international heavyweights Kerrang! and Rock Sound, as well as being named the 'Next Big Thing' by HMV. In September, Waxflower followed up with a powerfully poignant stripped back single, 'Getting Better', which saw their success grow both domestically and across the globe. To close out the year, the band returned with 'Again', a taste of a new era for the Brisbane pop punk four-piece which received both domestic and international support from the likes of Happy Mag, Hysteria, triple j Unearthed, triple j, Kerrang!, and Rock Sound. Waxflower have been growing an impressive resume of supports for such a young band, having shared the stage with the likes of Between You & Me, Stand Atlantic, Sly Withers & more as well as supporting US giants Simple Plan and The Dangerous Summer. Taking reference from 2000's legends Kisschasy & Jimmy Eat World, Waxflower merge nostalgia with progressive melodies and catchy hooks to bring a genuine and unique perspective on alternative rock. Interview with Brooke Stephenson
We had the pleasure of interviewing Brooke Stephenson over Zoom video! Based in Los Angeles, singer-songwriter Brooke Stephenson tells stories that draw you in with beautifully compelling lyrics and dynamic melodies. Raised on musicians like Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi, Brooke's voice and music are like "gumbo", with one foot rooted in her love of Americana music, she incorporates a mix of country, soul, rock, and blues. Brooke's storytelling brings songs to life, captivating audiences with powerful vocal performances, and holding their focus through delicate, vulnerable moments. In 2019, after earning a spot on Kelly Clarkson's team on NBC's The Voice Season 17, Brooke worked one-on-one with Clarkson and her chosen advisor Normani, refining her musical palette. Additionally, her background vocal credits include Andy Grammar's track "I Found You" and Christone "Kingfish" Ingram's track "Rock & Roll". Pre-covid, Brooke spent much of her time performing at some of LA's most prominent songwriter venues, and writing songs for her debut Americana EP "Backbone", produced by John Spiker (Tenacious D, Beck, John Carpenter). The first 5 singles were released in 2020, and the full EP will be released Spring 2021. "Backbone" is a body of work incorporating American roots influences, and detailing the curious mind of a 20-something year old, trying to navigate through life, while humbly clinging to her roots. Interview with Hamish
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hamish over Zoom video! Hamish is the artistic counterpart to guitarist and songwriter Matthew Benthall. With producer Trey Kams at the helm, the two friends created an entity built on musical stylistic experiments that pull from each of their respective influences. Hamish is a blend of uncanny sounds derived from hip-hop, R&B and dance with elements of jazz, indie and lo-fi. Matt's writing confronts his identity, his artistic place amongst the American zeitgeist as both an immigrant and a child of two nationalities, and his relationships with love and infatuation. Hamish is an Alternative/Indie artist based in Los Angeles, and the artistic counterpart to guitarist and songwriter Matthew Benthall. Shortly after moving to Texas from the Middle East, he picked up the guitar, started playing in bands, and began to pursue music from the age of 12. Matt attended college primarily for guitar performance; between classes, an identity crisis, and gigs on a weekly basis, he was unable to fully navigate his beginnings with songwriting. Matt dropped out and moved to the west coast to pursue a live performance career as a guitarist. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, he pivoted his pursuits, with all gigs on hold he turned into his own writings and recordings. Without realizing his own departure primarily as an instrumentalist, Hamish created a sound built on musical stylistic experiments that pull from a range of influences, displaying a fresh approach to the new age of genre bending. Drawing from past experiences, Hamish shares his confrontations with love and infatuation, as well as his own identity as both an immigrant and child of two nationalities. He creates a space where comfortability and exploration can be achieved simultaneously. With each song, Hamish showcases his ability to create a beautiful contrast between a spectrum of concepts, sounds and emotions. We want to hear from you! Interview with Bhi Bhiman
We had the pleasure of interviewing Bhi Bhiman over Zoom audio! Singer-songwriter and guitarist Bhi Bhiman doesn't need much to ignite a fury of fascinating expressions; only the simplest of recording set-ups of guitar and vocal mics plugged into his laptop. Yet, even with such simplicity, he projects a towering voice that so urgently grabs your attention, you hang onto every word he sings. Bhiman's latest recording, Substitute Preacher 2, features a new set of mesmerizing acoustic covers in a series that follows his wildly popular 2013 EP (volume 1) of the same name. Fans will be treated to Bhiman's truly original takes on classic hits such as "My Best Friend's Girl" (The Cars), "Back In Black" (AC/DC), "Magic Carpet Ride" (Steppenwolf), "Paranoid" (Black Sabbath), and "My Way" (Frank Sinatra). Bhiman's foray into recording covers (Substitute Preacher 1) was such a hit that his rendition of "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits garnered several sync placements, including for an Apple Watch commercial starring Alice Cooper. The track further landed in a series of Xfinitycommercials. The same year Substitute Preacher 1 was released (2013), Bhiman took the stage at Carnegie Hall for a tribute show hosted by The Roots to commemorate Prince; other special guests included Elvis Costello, Talib Kweli, and Chris Rock. Substitute Preacher 2 revisits his passion for devouring songs written by artists he loves. For Bhiman, it's not simply playing the piece just as the original artists' would. He approaches covers as if it's a standalone new song that he personally wrote himself. Over the course of his career, Bhiman has developed a dedicated following after the release of four acclaimed studio albums. His 2019 album, Peace of Mind, launched as a podcast, with each episode revealing a new song, political theme, and a conversation with a lauded special guest, such as author Dave Eggers. Since its release, Bhiman has worked behind the scenes on diverse projects from acoustic versions of "Faith" by Galantis x Dolly Parton and "Unwell" by Steve Aoki x Kiiara featuring Rob Thomas. He has also worked with actor Keegan-Michael Key, rapper/director Boots Riley, and late iconic musician Chris Cornell. We want to hear from you! Interview with Rebelution
We had the pleasure of interviewing Rebelution over Zoom video! Rebelution –one of the most successful reggae bands of the 21st century – has released their highly anticipated seventh studio album, In The Moment, as a joint venture between the band's 87 Music label and NYC-based Easy Star Records. The band has released three previous singles including "Satisfied" and "Old School Feeling." and "Heavy As Lead." Recorded remotely in the midst of the pandemic, In The Moment is deliberate and wide-ranging, infusing the quartet's soulful, exhilarating brand of modern reggae with addictive pop hooks, alt-rock grit, and hip-hop grooves. The performances are bold and self-assured, and the production is equally ambitious, drawing on swirling reverb and trippy delay to create an immersive sonic universe that's both futuristic and vintage all at once. Strip away the intoxicating atmospherics, though, and what remains is a work of profound reflection, a probing, revelatory meditation that balances joy and introspection in equal measure as the band contemplates the meaning of time and how to spend what precious little we have. With COVID safety precautions preventing the band from gathering together and capturing the album live as they had in the past, the quartet decided to record remotely from their respective homes around Southern California. Operating with a hub and spoke model centered around touring guitarist Kyle Ahern, who took the lead producing the collection and fleshing out many of its arrangements, the group pieced together tracks one layer at a time, carefully crafting each song from the ground up with a wide variety of electronic and analog sounds. In addition to all their collaborative work, each member of the band teamed up directly with Ahern to quarterback particular tunes throughout the process, putting their personal stamp on the ever-evolving Rebelution sound. "We all worked together with Kyle to bring our individual visions to life," said Rachmany. "We wanted to make this the most diverse sounding record we could." That sonic diversity also gets a boost from the album's all-star cast of special guests, which includes Jamaican artists Kabaka Pyramid, Keznamdi, and dancehall star Busy Signal, as well as American soul singer Durand Jones. Ultimately, though, the record is pure Rebelution, a powerhouse collection of songs that challenges our perceptions and pushes us to live each day to the fullest; inviting fans to sit back, slow down, and live In The Moment. Interview with TILIAN
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tilian over Zoom video! Tilian is ready to start anew. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer has been an unstoppable force in the alt-rock scene since 2007, a master of memorable melodies and more experimental flourishes, both in his solo efforts and as the lead vocalist and guitarist for a number of bands. But 2021's Factory Reset, his fourth solo album and second on Rise Records, is more him than anything he's ever done before. This is the first time Tilian's tackled nearly every aspect of the record himself, and it's resulted in his most thrillingly eclectic work to date: a falsetto-laced brand of alt-pop that spans everything from trippy psychedelia and heavy prog riffs to warped hip-hop beats and dembow grooves. "The first album that I did with this project was not quite me," he admits about 2013's Material Me. "Now I want to make the album that I want to hear. 'What would be my favorite band?' as opposed to, 'What is everyone's favorite band?'" This philosophy started to take shape with his previous release, 2018's The Skeptic. Now, with Factory Reset, he's fully realized it. The writing came rather unexpectedly. Tilian began putting words down just a few weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic forced California to go into lockdown, in March 2020. He had planned on touring with his band Dance Gavin Dance, until—like the rest of us—he was stuck at home. And more to the point, he was alone. The Clearwater, Florida, native has always worked as a part of a larger unit since forming his first band in Tampa in 2007. Even as a solo artist he frequently collaborates, most recently with Marigolds+Monsters and Travis Barker on 2020's "Falling Out of Rhythm" single. But in forced isolation, the songs began to flow. He decided to write, record, and produce the album himself, eventually remotely bringing in drummer/frequent collaborator Kris Crummett to help button it up. Having full creative control allowed Tilian to experiment more than ever. This maverick mindset colors Tilian's reflections on his 2020 experiences—including meditative trips to the desert, life-changing psychedelic revelations, and an unsettling amount of death all around him. Religious, otherworldly, and metaphysical imagery pepper his lyrics, fueling both the heavy moments and a sudden sense of light and purpose that arrives toward the end. Factory Reset is both highly personal and wholly universal—who wouldn't want to press restart on everything at this point? We want to hear from you! Interview with Olivia Morreale
We had the pleasure of interviewing Olivia Morreale over Zoom video! Los Angeles-based artist/songwriter/producer Olivia Morreale released her new EP, 'SPACE DREAMS.' The 4-track project includes previous singles, "NO ANSWER," "PARASOMNIA" and "Another Moon," as well as a brand new track titled "Matter of Time." Created in close collaboration with fellow songwriter and producer Eli Koskoff, Olivia Morreale's 'SPACE DREAMS' EP is an electrifying listen from start to finish. Olivia revolts against genre limitations, drawing from a myriad of influences ranging from classic jazz to electronica, alt-R&B to 70s-era funk, and soul to bedroom pop, while still crafting a unique soundscape all of her own. Lyrically, the EP examines the ways in which escapism can be accessed through imagination and dreams, mirroring the soothing, dreamy production that underscores each song. "The overarching theme of dreams allowed us to explore through music those deeper subconscious thoughts that are sometimes difficult to address in everyday life and to create a space for exploration and imagination," Olivia says. ABOUT OLIVIA MORREALE: New York-raised Olivia Morreale started her musical education as a teen sneaking into underground jazz clubs in New York City. She'd grown up listening to all the jazz greats — Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. — but it wasn't until she saw the music come to life on stage that she realized the true collaborative and transformative nature of music. At the age of eighteen, Olivia relocated to LA to attend USC's Thornton School of Music to study pop and jazz. Throughout college, Olivia's distinctive, ethereal vocals led to numerous gigs as a hired gun — she toured as a background singer for Engelbert Humperdinck and featured as a star vocalist on Jason "Spicy G" Goldman's Hypnotized EP. Now, melding her jazz background with her immersion in Los Angeles's pop utopia, Olivia has created her own dreamy, synth-infused sound that combines colorful lyric imagery, deliberate instrumental hooks, and smooth vocals We want to hear from you!
