Interview with Psychosexual
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jeremy Spencer of Psychosexual over Zoom video! Psychosexual not only speaks to our basest desires, but it also brings them to life. Assuming the role of "Devil Daddy," flanked by beautiful women, and ready to rule in Hell, frontman and mastermind Jeremy Spencer gives concrete form to lust with the first-ever multimedia hard rock band and experience. (Think Rob Zombie scoring The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and you're halfway there!) Spencer builds upon an unbelievable foundation. He logged nearly 15 years as drummer and co-founder of perennial metal hitmaker the multi-platinum stadium-filling global hard rock leaders Five Finger Death Punch and authored his memoir Death Punch'd – Surviving Five Finger Death Punch's Metal Mayhem, which is the New York Times Celebrity Best Seller. Psychosexual features Crucifier (guitar), Astaroth (bass), and Volac (drums), alongside Devil Daddy's haunting vocals — in a character-driven and visually arresting tour de force. The group sparked interest with its blend of dark humor, camp, and goth and with songs such as "Let The Sin Begin," "Torch The Faith," and "Baby On Fire" from their debut opus Torch The Faith, which quietly charted on multiple charts upon release in Spring of 2020. Spencer chose the independent route for the debut, releasing it on his own label 6ex Records. Psychosexual's second album Unholy Hymns For The Children is due out in 2021. Never one to rest on his laurels creatively, Spencer released a series of '80s-inspired new wave originals in early 2019 as a precursor to the band — including some arresting and entertaining videos, like the stunning and sultry remake of Type O Negative's "Love You To Death." Spencer says, "I've been such a fan of so many types of music from David Bowie to Devo to black metal bands. Psychosexual really is the outlet I've needed to bring all these things together in one big evil stew." We want to hear from you! Interview with Wrabel
We had the pleasure of interviewing Wrabel over Zoom video! The much-anticipated debut full-length album from Wrabel, 'these words are all for you', will drop on Sept. 24 via Big Gay Records/Nettwerk, ushering into the world the next chapter from one of modern music's most celebrated, versatile, powerhouse songwriters and rising artists. Also today Wrabel has announced a short, intimate run of live dates, the nothing but the piano tour, which includes a stop at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge and an album release show at LA's The Regent Theater this late summer/early fall. Wrabel will also perform this Sunday (6.06) at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as part of the OutLoud: Raising Voices festival. The new album is a refined, masterfully written and cathartically performed collection that is 11 years in the making. Whether it's on tracks like the Billboard-applauded "good", the beautifully orchestrated "wish you well" (about the "tug of war" of letting go of past loves), the achingly reminiscent and sonically vast "london", the hauntingly sparse "don't pick up the phone" or the new single "nothing but the love" (whose video drops today), 'these words are all for you' showcases what has made Wrabel a go-to for heart-shattering slice-of-life songwriting about finding love, losing it, and discovering oneself throughout the journey. "I can't believe this is my debut album. It's been years in the making. The oldest song is around eight years old, and the newest, just a few months," said Wrabel about the lifespan of the album's creation. "I poured everything into this record and I am just so proud of it. I feel so lucky to have been able to make it with people so close to me and as an independent artist on my own label partnered with Nettwerk. I always thought my first record would be a break-up record, since the first time I started making it it very much was. This album is filled with love. Hope. True stories and true feelings. I hope me sharing in this way helps even one person feel understood, feel better, feel like they're not alone, and it offers hope that love will come and bring the healing powers it holds." The new video for "nothing but the love" (directed by Michael Thomas and featuring dancer Layne Willis) is gorgeously choreographed and feels like a spiritual reawakening. Watch HERE. Of the video, Wrabel said "Michael Thomas was such a pleasure to work with on this video. And Layne Willis, my goodness. I feel so lucky to have gotten to witness your incredible talent up close. This song is so close to my heart. The only song I wrote by myself on the record. With Michael's direction and Layne's emotive movement, we wanted to show that someone or something is showing me how to express myself, showing me the flow of expression. To mirror the love I am so grateful to have found." Wrabel's resume speaks for itself. He has toured alongside and collaborated with P!nk, has co-writing/performance credits alongside the likes of Kesha, Marshmello, Celeste, Backstreet Boys, Ellie Goulding, Louis Tomlinson, Louis the Child, Wafia, Cash Cash, and more. He's released four previous EPs, has racked up 265 million streams across all DSP platforms, and his song "The Village" has become an LGBTQ+ anthem. Over the past few years, his "knife-to-the-heart" (Idolator) songwriting has led to him becoming "one of Hollywood's finest songwriters for a decade" (American Songwriter), earned him a performance spot on the national NBC TODAY stage and had Billboard saying that Wrabel is "ready for his breakthrough". Interview with AFI
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hunter Burgan of AFI over Zoom video! AFI's unshakeable connection with their audience is a testament to the band's knack for reinvention, renewal, and exploration, anchored by an unblemished authenticity. AFI songs are embedded in the spiritual DNA of a legion of supporters, and these new songs are further demonstration of AFI's unwavering commitment to artistic exploration, a dark conjuration of an uncapturable muse. The band initially summoned a steady subcultural groundswell in the mid-90s, devoid of careerist ambitions. The band first made music as teenaged misfits in an obscure Northern California town, steadily assembling a dense catalog over the years marked by its diversity and authenticity. Davey Havok, Adam Carson, Hunter Burgan and Jade Puget keep their eyes fixed on the present and future, ensuring their position as a uniquely vibrant artistic force remains steadfast and strong. Like similarly artistically-minded iconic bands, AFI's ever-evolving identity has kept their sound, themes, and overall image fresh. A place in rock n' roll history assured by magical musical androgyny, both post-modern and timeless, AFI remains guided by the flames of authenticity and determination that defined their first ten albums and are sure to drive the next ten and beyond. Interview with 19&You
We had the pleasure of interviewing 19&YOU over Zoom video! 19&YOU recently released their self-titled debut EP. With this 7-track collection of alt-pop songs, 19&YOU delivers an expressive narrative filled with coming-of-age tales regarding ex-lovers, past celebrations, and the pursuit of self-discovery amidst the chaos and heartbreaks. 19&YOU says this of their EP: "Our debut EP '19&YOU' touches on heartbreak, transition, and longing. We started writing this EP when Noah came to visit us (Cam, Jack, and Liam), when we were studying abroad in Australia. At that time, we were all going through heartbreak and decided one night to make a song using that shared experience. That was the start of 19&YOU. We write from experience and relatability, which is why we believe our fans will be able to really connect with the tracks on the EP." The opening track, "PART OF YOU (with Carlie Hanson)", serves as a sweeping tribute to love and the fond memories of a former life. "PART OF YOU" underlines lead singer Cameron Graves' honeyed vocals and the band's penchant for crisp arrangements and soft pop. The song is further elevated by the angelic and impactful vocals of Carlie Hanson. The band, growing their fan base with the success of each release, has been able to capture the attention of several publications, radio, and playlist features, including Zane Lowe at Beats 1, Apple Music's Pop Chill playlist, Spotify's soda playlist, MTV, CLASH, AltPress, Ones to Watch, Lyrical Lemonade, LADYGUNN, American Songwriter, The Line of Best Fit, and more. More Info Meet 19&YOU. This is the story of boy meets girl, boy pursues girl to Sydney, and then boy unexpectedly makes new friends and creates a band instead of chasing love. Noah Taylor (executive producer) was love-struck when he followed a girl around the world. He ended up crashing at a friend's place in Australia, where he subsequently came across Cameron Graves (vocals), Jackson Leitch (guitar), and Liam Wallis (drums). An instant camaraderie took flight and the four guys started a band within days. In the following months via virtual sessions, the newly formed group completed their first batch of songs in one week. For the band, '19' represents an age in life between adolescence and adulthood that's full of transformative moments. Following their move to Los Angeles in June 2020, 19&YOU is gearing up for a 2021 breakthrough that begins with their debut EP. We want to hear from you! Interview with Mike's Dead
We had the pleasure of interviewing Mike's Dead over Zoom video! Combining elements of legendary nu-metal/ hard rock groups such as Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit & Korn with modern trap and electronic elements, American rapper & producer, Mike's Dead, has paved his own lane as a multifaceted artist. Launching his brand in June of 2018, he quickly amassed hundreds of thousands of followers across social platforms leading him to over 10 million independent streams in his first two years. With successful headlining tours under his belt and a "cult-like" fanbase at his side, we see an exciting future for Mike as he rolls out his new sound & inevitably his first album. Growing up just outside of Washington D.C., he dropped out of college and at the age of 20, moved to Los Angeles to study audio engineering and music production. After years of relentless studio work, he crafted his unique sound; blending elements of hard rock with crushing bass lines and elaborate synth work. Vocally, he combines hard rap lyrics matched with raw emotion and ghostly melodies. He is "...a voice for the unheard." Mike's Dead recently released his music video for "Nightmares", a truly visceral experience that shows him at the hands of an unhinged girlfriend. The track is his second from his upcoming EP "Revenge" after his previous single "SICK" which has over 110k streams and counting across platforms so far. We want to hear from you! Interview with Blood Cultures
We had the pleasure of interviewing Blood Cultures over Zoom video! Experimental psych indie act Blood Cultures lifts the veil on their anticipated eight-track project, LUNO, out now on Pack Records. Having long been an artist centered around anonymity, LUNO marks the birth of a new era for Blood Cultures, one that shines a light on their Pakistani-American heritage and provides a deeper, more personal understanding of their world. Exploring identity, change, and self-discovery, LUNO sets forth the revitalization of Blood Cultures as an artist and the messaging behind their music. LUNO's tracks have steadily pieced together a new Blood Cultures' universe inspired by this amplified importance of diversity in representation in art and entertainment. Each track carries its own distinct sonic qualities, from softly strumming guitars and shimmering synths heard in tracks like 'Set It On Fire', to jarring tumultuous rhythms heard in the experimental 'Beneath The Moon & Me', and the dark indie-electronic soundscapes of 'Keeps Bringing Me Back' and 'When The Night Calls'. Accompanying visuals paired with each single thus far have further explored LUNO's overarching themes of repression, the nature of control, duality of the self, identity, and rebirth. Throughout the Blood Cultures universe is a series of images portraying Blood Cultures wearing a burka and suit side by side, a simultaneous defiance and juxtaposition of the gender and cultural norms that persist in both eastern and western cultures. In doing this, Blood Cultures hopes to harness the provocative nature of fashion in order to tell their own multi-cultural and non-binary story. These outfits and imagery take on topics of western toxic masculinity and eastern feminine oppression - both of which are topics prominent in Blood Cultures' personal world. Thematically, LUNO centralizes around the internal exploration of darkness and the growth that comes with self-acceptance. Its name references the mythology of the lunar cycle and the moon as a symbolization of shift and rebirth. Even the project's eight-track count references this mythology, with each song correlating to a step in the archetypal journey through chaos and each exemplifying a different phase of the moon. The works of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell are among those that heavily influenced the storytelling behind LUNO - that the crux of every great story must be about change and if we as individuals want to truly experience growth we must let go of the person we were before. Embracing identity and raising questions around the themes of heritage, gender, and the innate need to belong, Blood Cultures aims to spark conversations around these complex yet significant issues. Interview with May Rio
We had the pleasure of interviewing May Rio over Zoom video! NYC's May Rio Sembera of Poppies released her debut album Easy Bammer via Dots Per Inch Music. Produced by Tony or Tony and mastered by Sarah Register (Ariana Grande, Yaeji, The Shins), Easy Bammer is inspired in part by time spent touring with Poppies, as well as the year the world went into lockdown. On her debut solo album, May turns months of isolation into a curious & hyperreal reflection on memory of a time in New York City before stay-at-home-orders and lukewarm take-out—reflections on a time when staying at home & thinking felt like an unreasonable request of the cosmos. Easy Bammer gives its listener a chance to experience the warmth & quiet laughter of reflection; it does so in a time otherwise reserved for most as an endless cycle of waiting for new headlines. Easy Bammer is inspired in part by May's time touring with her band, Poppies. This time of transient couch-surfing is endemic to the DIY performer, the musician sentenced to serve as an advertisement for herself—to play the gracious guest, night after night, with free cheap beer and snacks-for-dinner-dining. This experience, described in the song "Party Jail," is a groundhog's day of early-20s hedonism where one must keep smiling through a hangover that inches towards delirium. But the kindness of these hosts and their patronage is not lost on May, either. Such a life on the basement show circuit was already a distant memory by the time work began on the recordings that became Easy Bammer. The airborne menace known as COVID-19 would not only interrupt, but come to define the making of the project. With live shows no longer an option, these songs were developed alone in ad hoc home studios instead. This process made the idea of an actual party jail more appealing than it was initially meant to be, but such a taunting positivity is always the lair of the devil in the detail. This almost-seesaw feeling of "it sounds so fun" and "I'm getting tired" makes the unique and curious oddness of Easy Bammer a testament to feeling two ways at once and being okay with it. It is May Rio's personality and deftness that ultimately shine and make her solo debut the unexpected journey that it is. It is intelligent like a riddle and catchy like an over-saturated cartoon. May says, "Same as a lot of people, I felt my world get a lot smaller when the pandemic hit. I'd spent hardly any time at home before, and now this cozy place of refuge—- my bedroom — had been transformed into a cozy cell. I think in the album, I'm acting out a lot that I wouldn't be able to do in real life. I know, for instance, I probably shouldn't (or can't) act on this impulse, or say this to so-and-so… but I can wrap it up in these lyrics and box it in with this melody....These songs became a pillow for me to scream, or sob, into. And sometimes I'm laughing." We want to hear from you!
