Interview with Dot Allison
We had the pleasure of interviewing Dot Allison over Zoom video! After the haunting lead single Long Exposure heralded the release of Heart-Shaped Scars - Allison's first album in 12 years and her most personal to date - Dot Allison unveils another new single and lyric video, 'Can You Hear Nature Sing?', out today on SA Recordings. With Allison's vocals at its most ethereal, the single is tranquil in sound and passionate in spirit. 'Can You Hear Nature Sing?' originated from a poem written by Dot after her friend and poet Stuart McKenzie recommended some of his favourite poets. "On reading some of the work I wanted to use my immediate natural environment to write a poem" Dot explains. The result was 'Emblems' set in an autumn landscape. Later, when Dot and Zoë Bestel decided to write a duet for the new album Dot suggested 'Emblems' as "a starting point for the lyrics" As it transpired it proved fundamental in shaping 'Can You Hear Nature Sing?', providing much of the lyrical content. Dot's interests in music, literature, science and nature are integral to Heart-Shaped Scars overall aesthetic. It's backdrop of exquisitely sparse and intoxicating dream-folk evokes Dot's vision for "a pure kind of album that musically imbues a return to nature. I wanted it to be comforting like a familiar in-utero heartbeat." The album is produced by Allison alongside Fiona Cruickshank, with Hannah Peel adding string arrangements to four songs, courtesy of a quintet of Scottish folk musicians. Recorded at Castlesound Studios in Edinburgh - Dot's home town - the sessions include new collaborations with singer songwriters Amy Bowman "The Haunted" and Zoë Bestel on new single "Can You Hear Nature Sing?". Since 1999's Afterglow, Allison has striven to "keep the listener on a journey – and myself too." That journey has taken her from Afterglow's broad church (trip-hop, Tim Buckley-esque ballads, chilled psychedelia) to the sultry synth-pop of We Are Science (2002), the baroque Exaltation of Larks (2007) and the roots drama of Room 7½ (2009). She's worked with an extraordinary roll call of talent - Kein Shields, Hal David, Paul Weller, Pete Doherty and Darren Emerson, Massive Attack Scott Walker, Slam, Philip Shepard, The Babyshambles & Pete Doherty, underlining the huge respect her peers hold her in. On Heart-Shaped Scars Allison mines a deeply emotive seam. "Love, loss and a universal longing for union that seems to go with the human condition. To me, music is a sort of tonic or an antidote to a kind of longing, for a while at least." We want to hear from you! Interview with Kat Von D
We had the pleasure of interviewing Kat Von D over Zoom video! Gifted multi-hyphenate Kat Von D shares driving darkwave laced single 'Enough', the third track from her forthcoming debut album, 'Love Made Me Do It', due August 27th and available for pre-order now. The pre-order of 'Love Made Me Do It' includes limited edition signed red vinyl, red cassettes, CD digipack, hoodies with Kat's signature star face tattoos on the hood, custom sketchbooks and much more. Other limited edition colour vinyl variants are also available for retail. Listen to 'Enough' here - Pre-order 'Love Made Me Do It' here. 'Enough' is an ode to lost lovers in which Kat continues exploring the darkest angles of an unhealthy relationship. The new cut follows on recently released singles, the vulnerable synthwave slow jam, 'I Am Nothing', which found the talented artist at her most intimate and vulnerable, and the debut single 'Exorcism' - defined by Billboard as "a darkwave bop about love, loss and change" - which unveiled the album's recurring theme, in Kat's own words; "'Love Made Me Do It' is a collection of all my hopeless romantic thoughts poured into one album." Talking to American Songwriter, Kat revealed; "it's being able to dip into those feelings of codependency or craziness but not actually live in it. Although most of the songs were written during a time of depression, that's definitely not where I want to live, but there's a beauty and vulnerability and a strength to that as well. I'm not ashamed of writing out my faults. I'm so full of them." Talking about the new single, Kat reveals; "It was written by Chris Brenner, Danny Lohner from Nine Inch Nails introduced us. They'd actually worked on the song together, but they'd never done anything with it. It's one of only two songs I didn't write on the album. When I talked to Chris about it, he said, 'That was my big breakup song'. The intro lyrics are, 'Dove down to the bottom of the dark blue sea searching for any traces that are left of me'. I love that idea. You tend to lose yourself in relationships—good and bad. You're reflecting on your part and why you stuck around. It attests to our willingness to stay in shitty relationships." 'Love Made Me Do It' sits at the core of Kat's universe, proving that music is her first and strongest passion. Having been a classically trained pianist since her youth with a deep appreciation for music of all genres, Kat poured her soul into this long-awaited full-length debut album. The project features collaborators including Dave Grohl, Linda Perry, Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Peter Murphy (Bauhaus), Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails), Ladyhawke and Charo. Long before the history-making tattoos, ubiquitous television shows, best-selling books and an influential beauty empire, Kat Von D sat down at a piano for nearly two hours a day and played. In essence, music became her first creative language and most trusted outlet. Classical training and a deep appreciation for music of all genres essentially underscored her life. She studied voice under Ken Tamplin six days per week, strengthening her vocals. In 2012, she began writing with GRAMMY® Award-nominated Linda Perry. Following this experience, Kat continued to write on her own, sitting at the piano and summoning songs from raw emotion. During 2014, she retreated to London to record the original mix of what would become her full-length debut album 'Love Made Me Do It' (KVD/Kartel Music Group) before cementing it with her band – Gregg Foreman AKA Mr. Pharmacist (synth 1/Cat Power, The Gossip), Sammi Doll (synth 2/IAMX), Dave Parley (drums/Prayers), and Brynn Route (contortionist). They moved into a bungalow cottage on her property, lived together, and finished the record. Capping off the process, Dan Haigh of Gunship handled mixing. A pastiche of shapeshifting analog synths, post-punk dreamscapes, gothic hues, and shy pop magnetism, these eleven songs echo the eternal will of the perennially brokenhearted to love until death. Interview with Joshua Radin
A song subdues and soothes even the roughest seas. After sixteen years, eight albums, and hundreds of shows, Joshua Radin still treats music as an antidote to any ailment. The gold-selling, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter finds healing in between waves of acoustic eloquence and dyed-in-the-wool Americana storytelling. On his ninth full-length TheGhost And The Wall [Nettwerk], the troubadour continues a cycle of catharsis meant to be shared among any and all receptive hearts. Since 2004, he's affected countless listeners with palpable transparency. As a result, he's sold over 1 million records, generated 1 billion-plus total streams, and garnered a gold plaque for the single "I'd Rather Be With You." Landing north of 150 film, television, and commercial syncs, his voice courses throughout the zeitgeist. Among many highlights, First Ladies Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden personally handpicked "Brand New Day" for a commercial in support of the troops. In addition to memorable performances on Ellen, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Conan, and Today Show, he famously serenaded avowed super fan Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi during their wedding. Beyond sold out headline shows on four continents, he has also performed alongside Ed Sheeran, Sara Bareilles, Ingrid Michaelson, Sheryl Crow, Tori Amos, Imogen Heap, and The Script. Plus, he remains a committed philanthropist, supporting charities such as Little Kids Rock and North Shore Animal League America (NSALA), among others. After returning home from a European Tour in support of his 2019 album Here, Right Now, Joshua initially planned to hunker down, write, and record a new album. Nevertheless, the circumstances of the Global Pandemic complicated the plan… That's where producer Jonathan Wilson [Father John Misty, Conor Oberst, Dawes] comes in. One 30-minute phone conversation later, Joshua and Jonathan set about making The Ghost And The Wall remotely. Despite both being in Southern California, they opted to transfer files back and forth, crafting the entire record through the wire. Jonathan laid down the instrumentation in Topanga Canyon, and Josh cut vocals in the Hollywood Hills. Within a month, they had completed ten tracks. He paves the way for the album with the single "Better Life." Over understated acoustic guitar, lilting vocals detail the journey of "an immigrant coming to this country and seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time." Folk-style picking and hushed delivery relay the anxiety of the search for "the one" on "Make It Easy." Then, there's "Fewer Ghosts." A personal favorite, Joshua comes to an eye-opening realization cemented in confessional lyrics and soft tones. In the end, Joshua finds a way to heal once again on The Ghost And The Wall. Interview with Leah Nobel
We had the pleasure of interviewing Leah Nobel over Zoom video! Is a singer/songwriter signed to Nashville based artist development and publishing company Big Yellow Dog Music. Makes music that crosses genre lines between folk, pop, and alternative. Always with a heavy emphasis on lyrics. Was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. Home to heatstroke and the chimichanga. Got her start playing open mic nights and small acoustic shows in her college town of Flagstaff, AZ and post college years in Austin, TX. HAEL has been featured in numerous ad campaigns for brands like Apple, Motorola, DSW, and Patrón and has had successful sync placements on TV shows like Grey's Anatomy, Lucifer, and more. In 2019, Nobel released a record called 'Running In Borrowed Shoes', an album adapted from 100 interviews with Real People. Nobel personally interviewed 100 people from diverse backgrounds and wrote songs based on stories and themes uncovered in her interviews. She considers the project to be a 'hybrid creative endeavor' one that combines journalism, empathy, and music. "I hope that the record will be a highly relatable piece-- one that reminds us all of our shared humanity." says Leah. This year her original song 'Beginning Middle End' produced and co-written by Quinn Redmond is featured in the final film of the 'To All The Boys' trilogy on Netflix: 'To All The Boys: Always and Forever' and was released as the single on the soundtrack via Capital Records. Interview with Nick Africano
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Africano over Zoom video! Poignant songwriters carry a brilliance of capturing heart-piercing stories in real-time while reflecting deep-seated emotions and a lust for life that uplifts. Nick Africano's poetic storytelling bears unflinching intimacy and releases our imaginations to dream of love's abundance of emotions. Gossip of Flames is a masterpiece featuring Africano in collaboration with Nashville's rising star Lera Lynn (as seen on HBO's True Detective); who serves as the producer and co-writer (7 of the 10 songs) of Gossip of Flames. Gossip of Flames was recorded by GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Craig Alvin (Kacey Musgraves) at Nashville's Sound Emporium. Gossip of Flames culls an identity from Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself," though rooted in the life of a performing artist based in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. In a bout of inspiration to record Gossip of Flames, Africano returned to his Sicilian father's art studio in the midwestern town of Normal, IL where he grew up playing baseball with lauded artist Pokey LaFarge. The homecoming resulted in a handful of demos sent off to various Nashville producers and co-writers. While on a writing retreat in Music City, Africano met with Lera Lynn and Todd Lombardo as he neared completion of the 10 songs on Gossip of Flames. That chance composing session led to Lynn becoming the producer of Gossip of Flames. Gossip of Flames spotlights three recording sessions, the first of which includes an array of Nashville musicians. Lera Lynn is in the producer's chair while co-writing and singing on nearly every track. Craig Alvin engineered the album with Africano performing alongside Todd Lombardo(guitars, keys, slide), Robby Handley (bass), Chris Lippincott (piano, keys, pedal steel), and Jason Cheek (drums). Four songs on Gossip of Flames were engineered by Lombardo and performed/recorded with the trio of him, Africano, and Lynn. We want to hear from you! Interview with Jesse Leach of Times of Grace / Killswitch Engage
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jesse Leach of Times of Grace and Killswitch Engage over Zoom video! Churning depths of plaintive sorrow, stark self-examination, and moving soundscapes unfold in TIMES OF GRACE, with flashes of cathartic power and an undercurrent of insistent urgency. It's all a meditation on absence, grief, bewilderment, and rebirth, summoned with harrowing authenticity. The Hymn of a Broken Man arrived in 2011, nearly a decade after Leach's exit from Killswitch Engage, the pivotal New Wave Of American Heavy Metal band the duo co-founded with friends in 1999. The first music from TIMES OF GRACE materialized during Dutkiewicz's arduous recovery from near-crippling back surgery. A collection of songs the multi-instrumentalist and producer knew would suit his once and future bandmate. The first album earned acclaim from BBC Music, The Aquarian, and Rock Sound. It willfully upended expectations, with flourishes of shoegaze and ambiance in its songs. Now, ten years after TIMES OF GRACE first surfaced, comes the follow-up. Comfortably stretched beyond the parameters of what came before, without sacrificing an ounce of integrity, TIMES OF GRACE weave between pensive, heavy, midtempo rock, riffs, and atmosphere. The pair's vocal interplay makes for a rich, dense, and enthralling concoction, powering through various trips through dark nights of the soul and mind-expanding excursions into the wild. Songs of Loss and Separation benefits wildly from the powerhouse performance of ex-Envy On The Coast drummer Dan Gluszak, who toured behind the first album and is now an official member of the band. The sprawling second album from TIMES OF GRACE channels a dissonant, menacing, and unrelenting depression. Haunting romanticism and deep spiritual yearning collide in beautiful melancholy. It's a diverse but singular statement, like the most beloved work of classic bands. Songs Of Loss and Separation, insistent in its bluesiness, bleeds distortion and emotion, like a nerve, exposed. Interview with Emily Davis and The Murder Police
We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Davis and the Murder Police over Zoom video! Emily Davis and the Murder Police (EDMP)—El Paso, TX's favorite resident alt-punk project helmed by songwriter and frontperson Emily Davis—have found success across the nation through their poignant music and creatively engaging social media presence. Emily's "heart-on-sleeve lyrics, biting wit, and own brand of acoustic-electric folk-punk," as El Paso Inc. describes it, brings a unique presence to the Southwest US music scene. Emily has had a fascinatingly unique journey to the national stage. Their YouTube channel, featuring numerous punk rock covers (of, most notably, Bad Religion) has drawn serious attention – accumulating nearly 7 million views. Emily has clearly proven their talent deserves to be noticed, with a voice influenced by artists like Dolores O'Riordan, Shirley Ann Manson, Jenny Lewis and Neko Case, and a completely unique songwriting form of their own. And noticed they were, leading to the band's most significant outing to date – an opening slot on Bad Religion's 2019 fall tour to packed venues across the country. Through the opportunities and fans EDMP gained from this tour, they have expanded their audience to a national scale and have accumulated over 1 million plays on Spotify collectively from Emily's three solo albums and their debut album together, Same Old World. Emily's voice is an emotive one to say the least, and the often stark, introspective lyrics they write with expert precision are consistently front and center—commanding attention, undoubtedly. Emily's lyrical vulnerability on mental health, particularly regarding their experiences with bipolar disorder, is palpable but written in a manner that still feels relatable. A former Cigarettes After Sex Member—most notably playing guitar on their 2012 EP "I."'s sleeper hit song, "Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby"— Emily's guitar playing especially in their own band's mix is no joke. They strum with a level of intensity unmatched by most, crafting the parts in a way that is entirely complementary with their voice. The other members of EDMP only add to that power and vulnerability, with each member bringing their skilled performances to the mix to further empower each song. EDMP has some significant accomplishments under their belt, even beyond their 2019 run with punk legends Bad Religion. In 2017, Emily toured solo with Bad Religion frontman Greg Graffin, supporting his at-the-time recently released solo record, "Millport". In 2019 alone, the band opened for Leftover Crack, The Toasters, Authority Zero, and alt-rock cult superstars Cold War Kids. They were about to head out on tour with El Paso-based rock legends Sparta this last Spring, but had to put that plan on pause due to COVID-19. Still, Emily Davis and The Murder Police haven't let the pandemic hinder their progress, having just completed their second successful crowdfunding campaign. The band raised an impressive $13K to finance their upcoming second record, coming Spring of 2021. Their debut record, "Same Old World" was released on October 5, 2018 as the result of a similarly successful crowdfunding campaign. The full band's debut record featured a mix of 90's-inspired alt rock, folk and punk, to form a sound that Emily has no doubt continued to curate and perfect for their upcoming second full-length, "Never A Moment Alone."
