Interview with Jelani Aryeh
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jelani Aryeh over Zoom video! 21 year old Filipino/African-American artist Jelani Aryeh is back with his highly anticipated debut album, I've Got Some Living To Do. The record showcases Jelani's abilities to effortlessly transcend genres from indie to pop to rock to alternative and more. In an era where albums are dominated by commercial hits and a whole lot of filler, Jelani has crafted a meaningful body of work that reimagines classic influences through a modern lens. Front to back, I've Got Some Living To Do is filled with nostalgia, warm energy, and a comforting spirit. Previous tracks like "Stella Brown", "Marigold" and "From These Heights" have already amassed Jelani 55 million streams and an army of fans around the world. Jelani was recently the first artist on the cover of Spotify's new playlist, "Today's Indie Rock". Jelani Aryeh crafts timeless songs with an emotional depth far beyond his 21 years of age. He re-imagines the classic sounds of indie rock, alternative, and folk through the lens of a mixed race kid who grew up in suburban San Diego. Standing out from the crowd in an era of memes and social media virality, Jelani brings an emotional depth, spirituality, and substance to his songs that belies his years. Growing as a young adult and an artist, Jelani is expanding his sonic palette, working with new collaborators, and writing with newfound confidence about matters of the head and the heart. "For a lot of kids my age, I see that we numb ourselves in order to carry on with our lives. I want to make people take a step back and reflect on those times where we turned the switch off," Jelani says, of his intent for this album. I've Got Some Living To Do sees Jelani exploring new sonic territory. "It's always been a dream to make a guitar driven record. I think it stems from meeting my ex-girlfriend and her putting me onto bands like Cage The Elephant, The 1975, and Milky Chance," recalls Jelani. "I fell into a rabbit hole of indie rock, psych rock, noise rock, glam, and folk. That's just what I like listening to now. Brian Eno, Sonic Youth, Wilco, Radiohead, Love, The Beatles. It just consumes me." Back in 2019, Jelani released his debut EP, Helvetica via No Matter, exploring topics like pursuing music over a promising football career, his mixed race identity, and following his dreams. The introspective and innovative project racked up millions of streams and support from tastemakers ranging from Apple Music's Zane Lowe, who premiered lead single "Patagonia," to Rolling Stone magazine, OnesToWatch, Complex, and many more. Jelani spent 2020 working on new music and shared the single "Stella Brown," an upbeat ode to brunettes and young love, which resonated worldwide. It became his most successful release to date with over 21 million streams and support from DSPs, radio, and press. From the cover of the Lorem playlist on Spotify, to video profiles with Verizon and Complex, to live performances for Tidal, and radio support from Apple Music, "Stella Brown" was everywhere. This past March, Jelani showed another side of his upcoming album with the release of the sunny, aspirational single "Marigold." The momentum kept building with support from Apple on the cover of the New Music Daily and Superbloom playlists, alongside an interview with Zane Lowe announcing the album, support from Spotify on the cover of Lorem, and tastemaker radio spins on Sirius XMU, KEXP, and more. Interview with Boyish
We had the pleasure of interviewing Boyish over Zoom video! Boyish was formed by India Shore and Claire Altendahl in 2016. They met at Berklee College of Music when India needed a guitarist for an audition tape and Claire volunteered. Their musical compatibility quickly became apparent and they started collaborating soon after under the name "The Blue". The duo went on to write and produce their debut project Carnation in 2018, which received positive write-ups from several publications. The New Yorker described them as "looking uncertainty straight in the eye in songs that are confident in their musicality even when tackling themes of angst and doubt". Carnation was nominated for Alt-Country Album of the Year at the Independent Music Awards. After graduating college in 2019 and feeling the need to start over they changed their name to Boyish. They released their sophomore album Garden Spider on Valentines Day of 2020, which according to Atwood Magazine is "an immersive ten-track indulgence of introspection and inner angst channeled through a colorful, raw indie rock lens," or as Claire calls it, a declaration of "Big Gay Sadness". WTBU Radio describes it as "a full-length project that can genuinely rival nearly any alternative pop act working right now". The title track "FUCK YOU HEATHER" has been streamed over 1 million times and was added to playlists like "Fresh Finds Best of 2020" and "Undercurrents". Boyish released their most recent EP "We're all gonne die, but here's my contribution" on May 28th of 2021. The project received praise from Nylon, NPR, Ones To Watch, Them., The GLAAD Wrap, and Lyrical Lemonade. The lead single "Superstar" has been streamed over 400,000 times and was added to Spotify playlists such as "Fresh Finds", "Lorem", "All New Indie", and "Softly". Their single "whatshisname" was played on BBC Radio 6 and their third and final single "Your Best Friend" was featured as the KUTX Song of The Day. We want to hear from you! Interview with Will Van Dyke
We had the pleasure of interviewing Will Van Dyke over Zoom video! An established musician in the theatrical world of New York City, VAN DYKE was looking for collaborators when an email from lyricist and playwright Jeff Talbott appeared in his inbox. Like Elton John finding Bernie Taupin at the right moment, these two paths crossing would launch a strong and lasting songwriting partnership that culminates in the release of VAN DYKE's debut solo EP, THE MAYOR. At 22, WILL hit the road with the first National Tour of Wicked playing the piano. After a brief stint on a National Tour of Grease starring Taylor Hicks, he landed his first Broadway gig, The Addams Family. Jumping from The Addams Family to Rent led him to Kinky Boots, where he was part of the music team with Cyndi Lauper. The relationships built on Kinky Boots led to the musical version of Pretty Woman and working with Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Currently, VAN DYKE is the music supervisor of Little Shop of Horrors, for which he also served as orchestrator and arranger. He was nominated for a Grammy® Award in 2020 for his work on the Little Shop of Horrors cast recording. We want to hear from you! Interview with Evann McIntosh
We had the pleasure of interviewing Evann McIntosh over Zoom video! Rising 17-year-old singer-songwriter Evann McIntosh (they/them) announces their new album 'Character Development' out August 27th via Mom+Pop Music. Written and recorded primarily in the breakout star's suburban Kansas bedroom, the 13-track collection mixes dark alt-pop and dreamy R&B with streaks of hip-hop, jazz, and funk, calling to mind everything from Prince to Billie Eilish as it grapples with growth and evolution, gender identity and sexuality, freedom, and self-expression. The album is a work of pure intimacy, a poignant and revealing portrait of modern adolescence from an artist unraveling the mysteries of their psyche one song at a time. "This record is all about growth and change," Evann explains. "I'm always evolving, and this album is the sound of that transformation, of one version of myself giving way to the next." Pre-order 'Character Development': https://evann.me/Characterdevelopment Evann's new single "NOBODY ELSE" – a sweet R&B-tinged track on the excitement of a healthy, monogamous relationship – is out today. The intimate music video showcases Evann's lighthearted personality and groovy dancing chops "emanating a self-assured confidence well beyond their age" (Ones To Watch). "'NOBODY ELSE' is about commitment and being very proud of your relationship with somebody," Evann says about the song. "It is about monogamy and the idea of there being one person for everybody, and that you've found yours." Previously released single from 'Character Development,' "JENN!FER AN!STON" set the tone for Evann's unpredictable and adventurous LP. The spare, slow-burning track stacks heavenly vocal harmonies and the video sees Evann galavanting around a luxurious penthouse and grooving through New York City. ABOUT EVANN MCINTOSH: Character Development is more than just Evann McIntosh's transfixing new album; it's their way of life. Written and recorded primarily in the breakout 17-year-old star's suburban Kansas bedroom, the collection mixes dark alt-pop and dreamy R&B with streaks of hip-hop, jazz, and funk, calling to mind everything from Prince to Billie Eilish as it grapples with growth and evolution, gender identity and sexuality, freedom and self-expression. The writing here is as insightful as it is unpredictable, alternating between earnest poeticism and playful acrobatics, and the production is similarly adventurous, with McIntosh's longtime collaborator Jesty Beatz once again wrapping their performances in lush, magnetic arrangements. Even at its most densely layered, though, the album remains a work of pure intimacy, a poignant and revealing portrait of modern adolescence from an artist unraveling the mysteries of their psyche one song at a time. Character Development follows McIntosh's acclaimed 2019 debut, MOJO, a digital juggernaut that racked up more than 31 million streams in part due to the viral TikTok success of lead single "What Dreams Are Made Of." Ones To Watch hailed the music's "self-awareness and vulnerability," while WWD praised McIntosh's "maturity and vision," and Vogue HK declared that they were "ready to conquer the world." The record also caught the attention of esteemed indie label Mom + Pop, who signed McIntosh over Zoom in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We want to hear from you! Interview with Marcus Bell Bellringer
We had the pleasure of interviewing Marcus Bell Bellringer over Zoom video! Marcus Bell is one of the top music producers/composers in the industry. He has worked with some of the biggest artists such as Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Snoop Dogg, and many more. He also produced and composed for some of the most famous films and TV shows. Apart from that, Bell is a successful entrepreneur who wants to help people achieve their goals in life. That's why he created a project called "100 Dayz Challenge" in his 'Wealth and Impact' boot camp to guide people on the way to success. This Challenge helps people achieve their goals in life, no matter what they are by creating a sense of community. The people joining this challenge will have to do something every day that will help them get where they want to be. And every day they'll have to share with the rest of the community what they did. This way they feel they really have to stick to it and they belong to a community. They'll also have to create a consequence for themselves, something they'd hate doing. If they miss one day of the challenge, they'll have to apply that consequence. Each individual has a different goal, it could be getting a better relationship with your family or partner, growing your company, selling more records, or anything anyone wants. Years ago, Marcus was $75K in debt and life wasn't as easy as it is now… But he managed to go from being in debt to becoming a millionaire and the go-to music producer/songwriter for celebrity artists because he learned how to commit to his goals. Bell has also produced soundtracks for several television shows and films. Some of the upcoming or recent ones are the TV series P-Valley (Starz Network) with the singles 'Boy Listen' and 'Own It', the Netflix series Ginny & Georgia with the song 'Give Us Love' or the Netflix Christmas film 'Operation Christmas Drop' with his song 'Joy to the World'. Marcus Bell also published a #1 best-selling book in Amazon titled 'Bellringer Branding Bible: The 5 Musician Branding Principles for Singers, Rappers, DJs, Music Producers, Composers, Writers, and Recording Artists.' Interview with Laura Escudé
We had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Escudé over Zoom video! Los Angeles-based Future Classical artist and master technologist Laura Escudé has released her new EP ENOUGHNESS, that documents her journey to acceptance and self love. This past year of forced isolation pushed Escudé to confront her darkest inner demons and start the recovery process from a 20 year eating disorder. Escudé spent such a large portion of her life obsessing over her physical and not loving herself, which she wrote about on Medium for National Eating Disorder Awareness week, living a life that was not sustainable, both physically and mentally. Music is where Escudé feels the most free, and with ENOUGHNESS synthesized her skills as a classically-trained violinist and avant garde electronic producer, infusing neo-classical & sleek futuristic style with raw emotion to share her story. Technology is a second language for Escudé, who became the world's first Ableton Certified Trainer in 2008. In 2012, she founded Electronic Creatives, using her skills to hire and train programmers and playback engineers for artists including Logic, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Big Sean, Charli XCX, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Electronic Creatives has hosted several playback engineering training programs over the years, with the latest being MASTERTRACK Worldwide. Escudé brought massive productions to life for the biggest and most influential artists in the world including Kanye West, Jay Z, Bon Iver, Missy Elliot, Herbie Hancock, and television megabrand American Idol. These creative applications of technology made Escudé one of the world's most in-demand live show programmers and saw her touring extensively all over the world. With this level of success came the pressure to keep pushing herself to and in 2016, Escudé experienced awakening after tour burnout landed her in the hospital. The night before she went to the hospital she was on stage at Madison Square Garden performing with Kanye West for the Life of Pablo release, the night before playing a show in San Francisco, and the night before that on stage performing with Miguel at the Forum. This focus on her personal health and the health of her peers has given her a refreshed look on life, a newly lit creative fire that was funneled into the 4 songs on this EP. "I Love Me," is a musical meditation on self love and was Escud'és mantra throughout the pandemic. "Can I Hold You Anymore?" was written for Andrew Huang's 4 Producers episode on YouTube, on which Escudé got the chance to collaborate with Jamie Lidell. "Embrace Your Shadow" was written with lyricist Lila Rose as another reminder to herself and all to love ourselves completely, even the darkest parts and "Unlimited Expansiveness" is an instrumental journey through space and time, to remind us to be expansive with our thinking. The more we focus on expanding, the faster we move through our limitations. "I use my compositions to practice embodied liberation and allow the creative space to be my teacher—to let the process be the process and let go of what it should be," says Escudé. "I hope ENOUGHNESS becomes this for you too because you are ENOUGH. We want to hear from you! Interview with Hollis
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hollis over Zoom video! Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/producer Hollis (full name Hollis Wong-Wear) announces 'Subliminal,' her debut solo album out this fall. The forthcoming record was recorded during the pandemic shutdown, with artistic collaborations held over Zoom. The new single "Less Like," produced by producer/recording artist Sweater Beats (Lizzo, Panic! At the Disco) is out today. The slick alt-pop track, reminiscent of a Clairio song, showcases Hollis' "hypnotic" (Billboard) vocals. The video for "Less Like" sees Hollis sporting eccentric 70s style dresses and jumpsuits as she traverses through flamboyantly colorful shape-shifting scenes. Shot and directed by Hollis' close friend, frequent collaborator, and recording artist KO aka Koala, the visual was created by a team of queer and POC women, continuing Hollis' tradition of collaborating with underrepresented talent. Hollis, who added "recording engineer" to her resume with 'Subliminal,' teamed up with Macklemore collaborator Ryan Lewis as co-writer on her upcoming single "Let Me Not" (Hollis earned a 2014 Grammy nomination for her work on Macklemore and Lewis' The Heist, including vocals and songwriting for their hit "White Walls" and video production for "Thrift Shop" and "Wings"). Single "Grace Lee" is a moving, introspective tribute to the late Chinese-American social activist Grace Lee Boggs and features writing credits from Hollis' frequent collaborator and live accompanist Chucky Kim. Community support, equality, and grassroots mobilization drive many of Hollis' initiatives. The tour concept for her February 2020 EP half-life, "Hollis Does Brunch," was designed to unite artists, small business owners, and organizers in person; during the pandemic, she pivoted to live-streamed Sunday gatherings. The series raised close to $30,000 for COVID mutual aid, Black-led organizing, and community causes, leading the Seattle Times to call it "an unexpected grassroots fundraiser." Hollis' early days as a teen slam poet and spoken word artist — along with inspiration from Seattle's grassroots hip hop scene and its intersection with social justice — laid the groundwork for her ongoing appearances as a speaker and moderator. Hollis speaks on topics such as empowered creativity and independent artistry. She is a host and writer for Breaking Down the Biz with Splice ("What is Music Copyright?") and the lead producer of Take Creative Control: The Series, a program that features artists of color and their personal and professional stories as it relates to intellectual property law. She is also a co-curator of Bravespace, a compilation of Asian American recording artists and composers presented by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, due for release this fall (and including Hollis' track "Subliminal"). About Hollis Wong-Wear: Hollis is a modern-day Renaissance woman: recording artist, vocalist, songwriter, creative producer, and community advocate. With her roots in spoken word and slam poetry through the nationally recognized Youth Speaks program, Hollis is passionate about how creativity and the arts fuel and shape civic discourse and is dedicated to lending her voice and capacities towards vibrant social equity. Known best for her collaborations with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ("White Walls," for which she was Grammy-nominated), Shawn Wasabi ("Otter Pop") and her band The Flavr Blue, Hollis' solo music -- which she calls existential alt or "sad girl jams" -- showcases her singular voice and rich, daring lyricism. Her debut solo EP half-life was released in February 2020; her self-directed video for her single "All My Weight" premiered on Billboard, and she was named one of Pigeons & Planes' Best New Artists 2020 upon its release. Originally from the Bay Area, Hollis Wong-Wear emerged from the independent hip hop scene in Seattle and has become an in-demand songwriter in her current home of Los Angeles. Alongside her music, Hollis is an impassioned advocate for empowered creativity, a Google Next Gen Policy Leader, and is a frequent featured speaker on the intersection of art, activism, and creators' rights. Interview with Andy Velo
We had the pleasure of interviewing Andy Velo over Zoom video! Nashville-based country artist Andy Velo recently released his new album Way Out. Produced by Jimmy Ritchey (Jake Owen, Clay Walker, Robert Counts), Way Out evokes traditional country of the '70s, '80s, and '90s as Velo charts his own path while simultaneously carrying the classic country torch. Today he shared his new single "Drinkin' Friends," a blue collar punch that recalls timeless churning honky tonk from the likes of George Strait and Mark Chestnutt. Of the new track, Sounds Like Nashville raved "Filled with glass-in-one-hundred-percent-full positivity and featuring a jiving honky-tonk sound, its a rowdy new standout with an old-school approach, ready to order up a night on the town." Velo began teasing songs from Way Out last fall when he released "Whiskysippi," an intoxicating track that suggests the free-spirited love child of Jason Aldean and Little Big Town. American Songwriter raved it "straddles that line of sounding fresh and new yet still carrying that traditional torch." It was followed by "Shade Tree" last month, a summer fun anthem that The Boot called, "country-with-a-capital-C...The upbeat, traditional-leaning love song is unpretentious and full of fiddle and steel guitar." Since his debut, Velo has accumulated over 4.2 million streams across Spotify and Apple Music alone and played shows with artists such as Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Kip Moore, Ashley McBryde, Jason Aldean, and many others. His breakthrough 2019 single "Half-Truths & Other Lies" spent three weeks at #1 on CMT's fan-voted 12 Pack Countdown. Country Living named him "The answer to those looking for a traditional country sound," while Country Music Pride exclaimed "He's the next big thing!" A native of North Georgia, Velo began his country music path at just 11 years old. He started going out on the road full time right after high school with then rising country artist Corey Smith. In 2012, he made his official move to Nashville and released his self-titled debut EP. It was followed by his second EP Blue Collar Cruise and the North Georgia Pines LP shortly after, all of which continued to provide the backdrop to his high-energy live shows as he spent time playing festivals, headlining clubs, and opening for several of country's top artists. Velo is also honored to be one of few artists that are brand ambassadors for Jim Beam and Maker's Mark bourbon. He is also partnered with Monster Energy, playing some of their marquee events such as PBR and NASCAR races. Listen everywhere here. Watch the lyric video here. A sultry, dark pop addition to KINGS' growing catalog and another striking showcase of her standout vocal prowess, the song gets personal for KINGS, of which she describes, "Honestly, I just wrote this song so we would all have something to dedicate to our ex's rebounds." KINGS describes, "Nashville is an incredible city full of ambitious people. It was so natural for me to be in an environment where everyone is always creating no matter what.
