Interview with Alison Sudol
We had the pleasure of interviewing Alison Sudol over Zoom video! London-based, American singer-songwriter and actress Alison Sudol releases her autobiographical new album Still Come The Night via Kartel Music Group. Formerly known under the moniker A Fine Frenzy, this intimate album is an impassioned effort that signals the welcome return of a unique artist, a powerful voice armed with candid lyrics and authentic musicianship. Written and co-produced by Alison with London-based multi-instrumentalist, producer and composer Chris Hyson - half of adventurous collective Snowpoet - Still Come The Night owns its intimate sound to the backdrop at Giant Wafer studios, situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestled between sheep fields in the Welsh countryside. Chris recruited Welsh twin brothers Lloyd and Alex Haines on drums and guitar and engineer Alex Killpatrick to join them at Wafer. There they worked together from morning until midnight, writing song after song, creating a hushed intimacy and sense of space among, even, the many layers of songs with their subtle harmonies and intricate instrumentation. While making the core of the album (those four songs were written by Alison while isolating at her friend's farm with her partner), she just found out she was pregnant when the world suddenly stopped, filming on Fantastic Beasts - the movie franchise in which Alison stars as Queenie Goldstein - had been indefinitely suspended, the tour with Goldfrapp postponed, and for some reason she couldn't taste or smell anything. The mood in London was strange, tense. No one knew how long this thing would last, and the risk for pregnant women. There, without any wifi, set with the changing seasons and the quiet solitude of their borrowed cottage as the backdrop, the first songs of her intimate and introspective yet powerful, poetic record came quickly and quietly. London went into lockdown. Days later, they lost the baby. When Alison began writing Still Come the Night, she knew that she wanted to make an album to process the different stages of grief that she and her partner experienced with the loss of their first baby in pregnancy. This new album spans the emotions of Alison's journey, from the exhilaration of early love into the tightrope walk of excitement and uncertainty of pregnancy and ultimately through the complex and mysterious landscape of grief. Now based in London, Alison Sudol is an American singer-songwriter, musician, actress and video director. Having released three critically acclaimed albums under the name A Fine Frenzy during which she toured with Rufus Wainwright and opened for The Stooges at SXSW. Making her comeback to music as Alison Sudol in 2018 she released two EPs, Moon and its follow-up, Moonlite both co-produced with Yard Act and Gruff Rhys' producer Ali Chant, and featuring Portishead's Clive Deamer and Adrian Utley and John Parish. Her acting credits include the Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them franchise and the critically acclaimed TV series Transparent and Dig. We want to hear from you! Interview with Alexis Lynn
We had the pleasure of interviewing Alexis Lynn over Zoom video! Alexis Lynn is an Indigenous (Potawatomi) singer-songwriter from Surrey, British Columbia. A captivating performer with a honeyed vocal tone and an edge underneath it, Alexis crafts deceptively sweet pop anthems that never shy away from her ethos of honesty and empowerment. Inspired by the worlds of hip-hop and R&B, her music radiates confidence and examines our insecurities in equal measure. With an ambitious year ahead of her, Alexis Lynn's fans know that ultra-catchy hooks and radio-ready production are a given; the stories she's telling with them just might surprise you. Growing up outside of Vancouver, Alexis Lynn knew from her earliest days that she wanted to be a singer. It was when she took up songwriting as a teen that she knew she was destined to be an artist. Having always loved writing, Alexis found that speaking her truths through music came naturally, and her family roots in Canada's First Nations further inspired her commitment to storytelling and her belief in the importance of sharing our life experiences. With unapologetic greats like Amy Winehouse and Rihanna as guiding influences, Alexis developed a raw style of songwriting that belies her sweet demeanor, confidence in tackling any topic that she feels passionate about. An unabashed feminist and an advocate for mental health awareness, Alexis writes songs that cut the small talk, helping people of all stripes to feel heard in their struggles and inspiring listeners to know their own worth and to never settle. And with a work ethic like hers, settling isn't on the table for Alexis Lynn: with a hand in the whole creative process, from art design to music video editing, Alexis has the drive and artistic clarity to make her aspirations a reality. Interview with JULS
We had the pleasure of interviewing JULS over Zoom video! Juls is a pop singer/songwriter from Connecticut, who is creating a world radiating with starry eyes, ocean blues and true love. Her love for music began at just eight years old, when her dad built a stage in the basement for Juls and her sister. Instantly recognizing that performing and singing was her calling, Juls shares, "My sister Jacqs was my presenter, and I was the star of the show, prancing onto the stage in my sparkly bodysuits and 6-inch heels (Jacqs was my stylist and makeup artist too, of course). Quite a bit has changed since then, but one thing has remained the same: our shared love for music. Well, two things actually...Jacqs still does my performance makeup lol." With a burning desire to pursue her musical career, and with her sister at her side as her manager, best friend and "sisager", Juls has quickly become a force to be reckoned with. She reveals, "We once believed that the dream worlds we were creating for fun would only ever exist within the confines of our basement. However, we are now turning these dreams into our reality, and we could not be more excited to share them with you all on a bigger platform." Taking inspiration from the likes of Taylor Swift and Lana del Rey, Juls is back with her latest release "Heartbreaker," blessing listeners with her ethereal euphoria and her truly deepening soundscapes. Reflecting the dazzling movements of the ocean, her music metaphorically encapsulates the highs and lows of adolescence. She explains, "I wrote the hook of this new song in my bedroom in Los Angeles last summer. I distinctly remember looking out my window and thinking about how heartbreak has a butterfly effect of sorts; people never break more hearts than when they are heartbroken because they often turn to others to ease their own pain. This person may simply be looking in another's eyes to erase the haunting memory of the ones they are trying to forget.. in the process, the people with fresh eyes may become heartbroken and taint themselves in a cyclical and sorta achingly ironic way. So I decided to write a song about this cycle of heartbreak and heartbreaking, building off of this play on words to create the hook." With a throbbing baseline, Jul's vocals roar atop stunning instrumentalism, reverberating with her synth-inspired euphoria. Reminding people of the magic in the small moments, she continues, "Music is amazing because it creates internal distance from the outside world and offers listeners a reprieve to clear their head and sink into a different moment or feeling. I hope that my music makes someone, somewhere feel heard or understood." Garnering over half a million streams for her music to date, Juls has received critical acclaim from the likes of Wonderland Magazine, Variance, and several Spotify editorial playlists, as she rapidly becomes an artist to watch for this year and beyond. Interview with Hunter Daily
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hunter Daily over Zoom video! Los Angeles singer-songwriter Hunter Daily shares her second single, "Before It Falls Apart," a vulnerable and lovelorn admittance of her struggles when it comes to accepting love, largely due to her (as she puts it) pessimistic nature. The track also comes alongside an official music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L6iiwgFMQY This September, Hunter made her official debut with a brand new single entitled "Die In LA," the first in a series of singles she's releasing via Flush Records. Alongside Executive Producer Jenna Andrews (the hitmaker behind BTS' "Butter" and "Dynamite," in addition to Benee's "Supalonley"), Daily spearheads music that encompasses the romance, heartbreak, and complexity of her hometown. Hunter Daily knows what she wants—to be for others what her favorite artists are for her: a light in the dark. Marrying the earnest folk-pop production of Noah Cyrus with the wistful lyricism of Phoebe Bridgers, Daily is a unique and compelling singer-songwriter with a soundscape that blends 2000's dream-pop with 1960's Laurel Canyon. Daily's music encompasses all the romance, heartbreak, and complexity of her hometown. "Die in LA," a thumping, piano-laced meditation on the City of Angels, states plainly that "there's more to life than palm trees and looking good at parties." A layered, church-choir chorus of intricate vocal harmonies —arranged by Daily's Executive Producer Jenna Andrews (the hitmaker behind BTS's "Butter" and "Dynamite," Benee's "Supalonely", and leading the development of artists like Lennon Stella and Noah Cyrus) — conveys the passion and urgency of her message. Nostalgia, love, heartache, self-discovery, and resilience are ultimately the glowing embers of her songwriting - as expressed in her folk-pop anthem "Age of Depression." In this song, Hunter juxtaposes the seemingly inescapable mental darkness that comes with hard times, with a hopeful, radiant attitude, asserting to listeners that "the best is yet to come." These are love songs, torch songs, songs of devotion, all timeless and vividly colored by Daily's sweet yet soulful vocals and lived experience. This is Hunter: raw, fearless, and unguarded. Interview with Ashe
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ashe over Zoom video! California-based, RIAA Platinum-certified singer-songwriter Ashe releases her sophomore album Rae via Mom + Pop along with the video for latest single "omw." Fourteen tracks in length, and created with close friends and collaborators Leroy Clampitt, Steph Jones, Casey Smith, Noah Conrad, John Ryan and Afterhrs, Rae ushers in a new era of confidence for the artist. Additionally, Ashe has announced her 2023 global "Fun While It Lasted Tour", with venues to be revealed next week. On the new album, Ashe shares, "Since my debut is called Ashlyn and Rae is my middle name, it seemed like the only name for my sophomore album. I've inevitably created a trilogy. Rae reminds me of California sunshine, but it also has a Western grit. Every day, you're in the middle of your life from being born to dying. I'm in the middle of my life. Rae marks the next era." Rae kicks off with first single, "Another Man's Jeans", which cuts right to the chase in conversation with an ex. Wild guitar licks wrap around handclaps as horns pipe up in the background before she declares, "I don't want to talk about the fights in your mustang, let's just think about the nights drinking rosé-colored champagne." Later on, she is joined by her life-long hero and fashion icon, Diane Keaton for the beautiful and soothing "Love Is Letting Go", her dusky delivery coasts over embers of acoustic guitar and a soft beat on "Hope You're Not Happy." Ominous percussion simmers, she takes aim at prehistoric industry sexism on "Angry Woman." With its psychedelic Floyd-inspired title, "Shower With My Clothes On" bottles anxiety inside of minor chords and a dynamic delivery. The upbeat piano, buoyant tambourine and seventies-style groove of "omw" embodies her confidence. Rae concludes on "Fun While It Lasted." Written on a slightly out of tune piano in Big Bear, California, she ponders the end of the previous chapter and the beginning of the next. Ashe will embark on her global headline, "Fun While It Lasted Tour." The 39-date tour spans across North America, Europe, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. See full dates below. Ashe has partnered with PLUS1 and a portion of all tour proceeds will go to supporting organizations working for equity, access, and dignity for all. Ashe's breakthrough debut, Ashlyn spawned multiple global hits, including "Moral Of The Story" and "Till Forever Falls Apart" - with FINNEAS - which was named one of the best songs of 2021 by the Los Angeles Times and surpassed 145 million streams on Spotify. Her meteoric rise includes amassing over 1.8 billion streams, 230 million video views, 8.9 million monthly Spotify listeners and a 4 million combined social media reach . We want to hear from you!
