Interview with Lybica
We had the pleasure of interviewing Lybica over Zoom video! Meet Lybica, a dynamic instrumental 3-piece force from south Florida that seamlessly blends flavorful guitar melody with powerful metallic crunch. Lybica will take you on an epic musical journey of peaks and valleys where the possibilities are endless. Lybica was first conceived in 2020 when it became clear to Justin Foley (drummer of Killswitch Engage) that he wasn't going to be spending much time with his normal dudes for a while. Quarantine days still needed to be time well spent, and he'd been working on some demos that he finally decided to share with a few local friends in south Florida. "I'd written a bunch of stuff that didn't quite fit into traditional song structures," explains Justin, "and I've always been drawn to bands where the instruments provide hooks, rather than relying on a lyric. It seemed like a good time to start something new and see where it could go." Justin had met fellow musicians Doug French (Gravel Kings) and Joey Johnson (Gravel Kings, Barriers Now Bridges, Days Spent) back in 2016 and they had repeatedly talked about jamming together but never actually got around to it. Justin and Doug, both drummers, often spoke about trying something different that allowed them each to get out from behind the kit. "I've always wanted to play a stringed instrument", says Doug, "and bass felt natural since it is the other half of the rhythm section." Guitarist Joey Johnson grew up playing shows all over Florida, heavily influenced by early punk and then both hardcore and metal. "All the good places to get a beer kept asking me if I had met Justin, since they know I play music. I heard about him in our town for about a year before we actually met through mutual friends. We hit it off when we started talking instrumental music." So when Doug and Joey eventually received the demos from Justin, they really liked what they heard. For several months the three emailed music back and forth while learning the parts, especially Justin (guitar) and Doug (bass) on instruments they weren't experienced playing. They eventually started playing together with the drum tracks from the demos blasting through the PA speakers. Before too long they had enough music for a full record and the direction of the band was starting to take shape. The trio soon discovered that they had something else in common besides music. "The three of us are pretty big cat people," Justin points out, "so it only made sense to call the band Lybica." Named after a small wildcat species native to Africa that is widely considered the godfather of the modern house cat, Lybica is the first known feline species to be tamed and domesticated by humans. Fast forward 10,000 years, and today Lybica the band are as addictive as catnip. With plans to release their debut self-titled full length album later this year, Lybica is poised to make some serious noise in 2021 and beyond, fur-real! We want to hear from you! Interview with Night Tales
We had the pleasure of interviewing Night Tales over Zoom video! The Night Tales project has been nearly a decade in the making. One half of the duo, Aaron Bannie was born in the U.K. before moving to Ibiza, where he learned how to mix and play on vinyl. He would later relocate to Australia in hopes to elevate his own electronic project, Third Floor. Kamaliza Salamba is an Aussie native, and also had his own career in music prior to Night Tales. He played in various bands, in addition to his own R&B electronic project, Kamaliza. The two connected via a booking agent, and immediately began collaborating on a house-infused, singer-songwriter project. Influenced by acts like the Talking Heads, the two dove into more thematic compositions that cover a wide range of music. Salamba writes the vocals and melodies, while Bannie provides his own vocals in addition to running drum and trigger pads. While Night Tales offer the storytelling and lyrics for widespread accessibility, their roots in electronica provide credence to their ability to connect with both mainstream and festival audiences. In 2018, the duo struck a 3-single deal with the German label, Majestic Casual. The label has provided a home for innovative acts like Edamame and Two Feet, so it made for a perfect fit for an enigmatic act like Night Tales. Following the deal, the two went to the studio and wrote a series of singles, including "Friends." This first series put on display the representation of human emotion and personal relationships. "Friends" would go on to rack up 5.7 million Spotify streams globally, with one of its top markets being the United States.. This lifelong benchmark for success and key to traveling to America came right as the pandemic swiftly took over the globe. Stuck inside their home studio during the pandemic, the two reacted by doubling down on their creativity by committing to monthly single releases. They found a massive organic following during the pandemic - wracking up 730k+ monthly listeners and millions of streams on hits like 'Friends' (8.7m+) and 'Move You' (2.8m). Night Tales' mission is to pioneer urban culture in the alternative electronic music scene. Their hope is to diversify and represent people of color in electronic music - championing acceptance and accessibility. Night Tales has seen a 60% increase in listenership in September -- increasing from 620k to 729k monthly listeners behind an average of 10k new listeners daily. These metrics make Night Tales among the fast growing artists in the United States right now. This coincides with the recent nationwide Proof tour announcement -- their debut album Proof is out now. Interview with Robot Monster
We had the pleasure of interviewing Robot Monster over Zoom video! Rock duo Robot Monster has released their newest single "OUT", streaming now here. The song comes on the heels of their debut full-length album which was released earlier this year. Both were produced by Grammy award-winning Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Kaleo, Tom Waits, City and Colour) at King's studio, The LBT, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. The band's previous single, "Get Somewhere" saw Robot Monster featured on Pittsburgh contemporary station T102; fans flooded the station with calls with over 7k calls following the band's on-air interviews. The song has also been featured on Spotify's Rock Hard and Apple Music's All New Rock & Breaking Rock playlists. Last May Robot Monster played their first show ever, serving as direct support for Stone Temple Pilots at the Palladium in New York City. The band is on tour now with The Bronx and Drug Church, with upcoming stops in Charlotte, Atlanta, and Memphis. For a full list of dates, please see below or visit: www.robotmonstermusic.com. About Robot Monster: In 2020, guitarist Will Brennan and drummer Logan Sidle weaponized Instagram and TikTok with scrappy appearances in backyards and junkyards, quickly earning supportive comments and direct messages from the diverse likes of Skrillex, Fred Durst, and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. Since then the band has experienced a meteoric rise – gaining a combined social following of 500k and regularly garnering over 2M views per week on TikTok. The magnetism of their musicianship and creativity quickly drew producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Buddy Guy, Tom Waits). King guided the New Haven, Connecticut duo as they collectively sharpened an identity and vision for what became Robot Monster. The band took shape without sacrificing, limiting, or overly complicating the initial spark, which quickly attracted so many. On their self-titled debut album they summon the enduring strength of stripped-down, bluesy rock n' roll with the feel of indie rock and punkish power. Songs like the riff-oriented and hooky groove monster "Caged," the moody "Cargo Cult," the expansively melodious "King of Everything," and the atmospheric "When We Sang" confirm ROBOT MONSTER is a genuine force of nature. Both guys are in their twenties yet fully cognizant of the timeless appeal of what they've begun. We want to hear from you! Interview with gigi
We had the pleasure of interviewing gigi over Zoom video! Breakout artist gigi gives a tour de force vocal performance on her new single, "Figurines," released today via Mogul Vision/Interscope Records. On the dreamy, self-penned track, which she recorded in Nashville, gigi examines mortality and the process of forging one's own path. Mike Zara and Aidan Hobbs produced and play on "Figurines," combining haunting keyboards with plaintive guitar and adding accordion and saxophone as the song builds to an emotional close. "'Figurines' is about the circle of life, fear of death, and the lengths people go to immortalize themselves. There are many areas of my life I can point in my early development that have influenced this sort of existential thorn i have. Your brain is a hard drive and you can never erase anything from it. Your experiences are with you always but you can work past them. Writing about my fears of mortality help me come to terms with it myself," said gigi. Born in New Jersey, raised in Florida and now based in Brooklyn, gigi is currently on her first national tour, providing direct support on Noah Cyrus' North American run. After sharing the track "Sometimes (Backwood)" on TikTok in 2021, she released the single independently. It racked up 18 million streams in the first six months and combined global streams now surpass 72 million. Hailing gigi as "one of Gen Z's breakout artists," Medium tracked the song's organic growth in this feature, and said, "['Sometimes (Backwood)'] is a torrent of raw emotion…Let's see what gigi does next." "Figurines" is the latest in a remarkable string of follow-up singles from gigi that include "The Man," "When She Smiles" and "Glue." Depicting the life of a queer twenty-something with raw honesty and all-enveloping beauty, the songs showcase her blunt yet tender poetry amid windswept landscapes of acoustic guitars, swooping strings and delicate reverb.
