Interview with Laura Cox
We had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Cox over Zoom video! The electric guitars and driving chorus will make the hearts of classic rock fans race. The discreet banjo provides the necessary southern flair and authentic sound. "Change of plans, no more pact with the devil..." it says in "So Long" — singing about a classic motif of the genre, while at the same-time, the increasingly topical subject of self-discovery and self-doubt. With over half a million subscribers on YouTube, and a similar amount on Instagram, Cox already has a large and loyal fanbase. The visibility on the Internet was followed by significant acclaim from critics and rock fans, especially for the incredible album Burning Bright (2019), released internationally by earMUSIC in collaboration with the French label Verycords. "So Long" lives on Cox's new album Head Above Water, which arrives on January 20th! The album contains 11 great rock songs bursting with energy and great personality. Recorded at ICP Studios in Brussels by Erwin Autrique, it was mastered by multiple GRAMMY-winner Ted Jensen (Eagles, Norah Jones, Green Day). After the release of her previous album, Cox played at some of the biggest European festivals last year (Hellfest, Pol'and'Rock, Rock Palast), she interviewed the legendary Scorpions for ARTE, and she had the honor to have a documentary about her quick rise in the rock scene, produced by German TV station WDR for the historical show Rockpalast. Interview with BOWEN * YOUNG
We had the pleasure of interviewing BOWEN * YOUNG LIVE from The Twisted Wool Lounge at the Historic Woolworth Theatre in Nashville! Most partners, in theory, will promise the world to keep each other safe and sound, but rarely is their vow necessary in everyday practice. However, when husband and wife duo BOWEN * YOUNG—singer/songwriters Clare Bowen and Brandon Robert Young—found themselves in the midst of a terrifying home invasion, the pair stared down the prospect of being separated, or worse, during a very real situation. Just two days later, without sleep and lacking creativity, BOWEN * YOUNG sat down with their friend and producer Sean McConnell and shared what they'd just been through. After several hours, the glimmer of an idea took hold of Bowen, just as McConnell picked up a guitar and said, "What if it goes a little something like this?" In less than an hour, the chilling story had been shaped into a song, and "Dangerous Love" was born. "Somewhere, deep in the conversation, Clare offered up an idea that was perfectly beautiful in the moment, revolving around the most harrowing part of the whole event," remembers Young. "...The prospect of one of us being taken away from the other, just because one cruel individual decided it should be so." The end result is a beautifully dark love song; an ode to just how far true-lovers are willing to go for each other. "Each time we play it is cathartic and healing," says Young. "Each time we play it we love each other a little bit more. This event was just one part of our story, but it affected us deeply, and the trauma therapy we've done to recover has been one of the best gifts we could have given ourselves and each other. We can't undo what was done to us, but we can, through spreading awareness of how important it is to take care of your mental health, strive to turn that individual's cruelty into another person's healing." More About BOWEN * YOUNG: Bowen Young's timeless debut record created by Clare Bowen and husband Brandon Robert Young is a multi-sensory feast. The music, produced by Sean McConnell, invokes themes painted by the duo's powerfully authentic lyrics and hypnotic harmonies. Clare, the charismatic actress who played Scarlett O'Connor in the popular show Nashville, is known as a ray of sunshine around the world. She is an empath who leads with her heart, able to communicate and translate emotions whether on stage or screen. Born in rural Australia, she moved to Music City in 2012 for the Nashville role and immediately earned respect from the city's musical leaders. She has performed with artists such as Vince Gill and Zac Brown Band, working with Grammy Award-winning producers/songwriters T-Bone Burnett, Colin Linden, and Buddy Miller, who became her mentors. She toured her eponymous album for sold-out crowds with Brandon in Germany, Australia, the US, and the UK. The pair also earned a coveted spot on Sugarland's popular "Still the Same Tour" and toured live with the Nashville cast, selling out London's O2 Arena. Brandon, who began singing at age five under the gentle guidance of his mother, had a very different upbringing and path to Nashville. In 2000, he moved from Enfield, CT, to Nashville, where he taught himself to play guitar. He worked as a courier during the day and spent his nights filling empty composition books with song after song. He spent a decade touring with music legend John Hiatt, first as percussionist and background vocalist and eventually becoming one-third of The John Hiatt Trio. He worked on three of the famed artist's albums, the last of which was nominated for a Grammy in the Americana category. Brandon has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artists Emmylou Harris, Colin Linden, and Mikky Ekko. Young was also invited by John Carter Cash to finish one of his father's unpublished works for Johnny Cash Forever Words. Brandon's music has been heard in shows such as Shameless, A Million Little Things, and Nashville. We want to hear from you! Interview with Lauren Ruth Ward
We had the pleasure of interviewing Lauren Ruth Ward over Zoom video! Lauren Ruth Ward is single-handedly revitalizing the image of powerful women in rock'n'roll by unleashing a spree of viral hit singles and headlining a sold-out U.S. concert tour. With the release of "Mindseye" – the seductive, guitar-laced title track of her wildly anticipated EP of the same name – Ward is poised for brilliant new heights. Of the track, Ward says, "'Mindseye' is about being in a relationship and trying to figure out what parts are real and what parts are disillusionment for you and for the other person. It's a question that is always there, especially since we're always changing. It can be hard to be honest with yourself and with a person you love because you don't always know if you're crazy or sane. It's the paranoid part of being in love." "Mindseye" is the latest salvo in a year that has seen the Baltimore-bred/L.A. based artist go from strength to strength, starting with viral smash "Messiah," which currently has over 42k streams on Spotify. The bluesy rock anthem is accompanied by a smouldering performance video lensed by filmmaker Wes O'Connor. Ward has further revealed her enigmatic screen presence in the lush, emotionally charged short film supporting the cathartic single "Suburban Ego." Teamed with acclaimed indie director Savannah Sivert, Ward reveals the depth and charisma of a movie star. The singles building to the release of Mindseye have proven to be formidable fuel for Ward's recent sold-out stateside concert trek that transcended the traditional artist/audience experience. "My shows have always been an interactive experience," the artist says. "There's a bond and a trust between us that exists and allows for a high degree of spontaneity." In addition to an extensive tour of Europe during the first quarter of 2023, Ward has also recently teamed up with internationally renowned comedian/writer/performer Mae Martin for a beautiful, lo-fi rendition of Elliott Smith's evergreen "Twilight." The track, which is available via SoundCloud, was recorded to raise awareness of issues surrounding mental health and suicide prevention. We want to hear from you! Interview with carobae
We had the pleasure of interviewing carbae over Zoom video! carobae, the moniker of Nashville writer, artist and producer, Caroline Baker, released her debut album scared to go to sleep, due out now via too drunk for a tuesday records / STEM. Recent single, "he'll never know" starts off with carobae's acoustic guitar strumming to her aching ethereal vocals speaking to an old lover about past issues that are of no concern now that she's in a better place b/w the soft loud chorus to the very dark "stab my back." "he'll never know" is completely written and produced by carobae herself. In the simplest form, "he'll never know" is about freedom from who I'd been in past relationships because now I've found someone who doesn't need me to change who I am or my needs for their own. I wrote and produced this song alone a little over two years ago when I had done a lot of personal growth and realization that I deserved to be with someone who didn't treat me like an afterthought or burden. I've been holding onto this song for a while now, and I'm still with who I wrote it about - he's eve playing drums on the record. In the past I've released a good amount of music about one-sided relationships and not feeling like I've been enough, and "he'll never know" coming out now feels like the perfect follow up to those old stories I've told. I think everyone needs to hear that there's love out there that you don't have to bend over backwards for and that you deserve simply by just existing. – carobae scared to go to sleep's tracklist is comprised of the indie pop singer-songwriter confessions from the heart, with candid and colorful songs written and produced solely by carobae as well as songs co-written and co-produced with Brandon Shoop (sophie cates, Quinn XCII), Sean Kennedy (UPSAHL, Role Model, Nessa Barrett), Lauren Mandel (LØLØ, TALK, Maggie Lindemann, MOTHICA), Raziel (Siiickbrain, Poutyface, Slush Puppy) and Megan Redmond (Taylor Edwards, Charlotte Sands, Taela). With this single and prior singles, title track "scared to go to sleep" b/w "if I don't leave the house, "till the day i ___" b/w "every time i close my eyes," which was included in Consequence's "Song of the Week" and "dead ends/happy endings," carobae released b-sides that complement the tone and theme of each single. With the release of "scared to go to sleep," carobae launched new merch items, releasing "behind the song" videos on her YouTube showing fans how she produces and writes each song, and giving fans "restless pages" designed as an activity book to be done while one is listening to the new songs. scared to go to sleep is a shift from carobae's relationship/heartbreak songs fans are familiar with, showing them a new kind of heartbreak sound – heartbreak from the world. carobae first started releasing her own music in 2019 through a handful of EPs starting with songs from 3am, followed by The Longest Year: Part One in 2020 and in 2021 she dropped The Longest Year: Part Two. These early releases earned her raves from NYLON, Ones to Watch and Alternative Press. Along the way, she's garnered over 40 MILLION streams on Spotify, who featured her on a billboard in downtown Nashville and featured her songs on numerous playlists including New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, Fresh & Chill, Indie Pop, and more. Interview with Glen Phillips of TOAD The Wet Sprocket
We had the pleasure of interviewing Glen Phillips of Toad The We Sprocket from The Twisted Wool Lounge at the historic Woolworth Theatre in Nashville! During his years as lead singer and main songwriter of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Glen Phillips helped to create the band's elegant folk/pop sound with honest, introspective lyrics that forged a close bond with their fans. When Toad went on hiatus, he launched a solo career with Abulum, and stayed busy collaborating with other artists on various projects including Mutual Admiration Society, with members of Nickel Creek and Remote Tree Children, an experimental outing with John Morgan Askew. Phillips' previous solo record, Swallowed by the New, was a post-divorce outing about grief, while There Is So Much Here finds Phillips writing love songs again focusing on gratitude, beauty and staying present. "Looking at this batch of songs, I realized I'd turned a corner. I noticed that I was in a state of being that wasn't all about loss. Things felt doable and hopeful again. There's no pure happy ending - the world is a mess, the future is uncertain - but I started to internalize poet Mary Oliver's words: 'Attention is the beginning of devotion.' I'm paying better attention. I'm getting more devoted." The 11 tracks on the album move between quiet love songs and outright rockers that consider the multi-faceted meanings hidden in our everyday lives. "Stone Throat" is a midtempo rocker that looks at a couple in a new relationship, trying to find the balance between desire and responsibility, or as Phillips sings, "trying to find the balance, between the sacred and the street." There's a hint of new wave ska in the rhythm of "I Was a Riot," a song that casts a compassionate eye on the end of a relationship. "The arrangement nods to Joe Jackson's Look Sharp," Phillips says. "Graham Maby is one of the greatest bass players of all time, so we had him in mind when laying down the bass part." The COVID lockdown-inspired "The Sound of Drinking," is an appreciation of the familiar things in life, like drinking a glass of water on your back porch. Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek) plays soft acoustic guitar and Glen sighs a lyric of gratitude for simple pleasures. "Call The Moondust" is the most metaphysical song in the set. There's a dash of secular gospel in Depper's piano, and ambient effects that suggest the vastness of the cosmos. Phillips delivers an emotional performance over a tense arrangement that hints at the wonders of the universe. "The beauty of life is in its mystery," Phillips states. "If we think we have an answer, we're deluding ourselves. My dad was a physicist and was reading about string theory on his death bed. He found God in all those extra folded dimensions, and left this world with a sense of wonder. I hope I can do the same." Ultimately, as Phillips reflects on the album, he shares: "This is an album about showing up for what is and letting it be enough." We want to hear from you! Interview with Baby Fisher
We had the pleasure of interviewing Baby Fisher over Zoom video! Emerging artist Baby Fisher's debut single "This Is The End" is out today alongside the official music video! https://babyfisher.lnk.to/ThisIsTheEnd The 17 year old, multi-talented singer songwriter is taking TikTok (and soon to be the world) by storm - his talent is undeniable and he's got an incredible personality and we're so excited he's sharing his talents with the world! "This is the End is a song I wrote at 14 and recorded at 15. It's a song about how much I despised the fleeting effects of my childhood leaving. It is the end of my childhood. This is the End." - Baby Fisher ABOUT BABY FISHER Hi, I'm Sam Fisher aka Baby Fisher, born July 25, 2005. I grew up in the valley (Van Nuys, CA) listening to Bruce Springsteen, whiny voice singers of the 90s and rap music. Moved to Burbank at the age of 10 and was possibly the LEAST cool kid in both elementary and middle school. At 12 I started playing guitar, about 4 months in of playing I started gigging regularly at blues bars with studio musicians from the 60s/70s who worked with Elvis, Etta James, etc. All my love goes out to them, if it wasn't for them, I'd still be day dreaming about being a musician. I dove headfirst into the high school dumpster fire at 14 while simultaneously spending all my time making music, reading, sewing my own clothes or hanging out with kids that were way too old for me and doing exactly what they shouldn't. I was the youngest so they called me Baby (hence Baby Fisher). I found myself sprinting into bum territory and instantly turned in the right direction. I fell in love with Bukowski and a good view point, driving at 2 am and too many women who were far too pretty for me. These loves quickly turned into song inspiration. Y'know I once wrote to my favorite author at age 10 and he wrote back. He told me a very simple thing that really stuck with me; "there's no magic in books, they're just words strung one after another, the magic happens in the readers head. All you've got to do is learn to get the order right." The same applies to these songs. All they are is silly little documentations of my life. There's nothing spectacular or fantastic or whatnot. All the magic comes from you. It's already there, the music is just what brings it out. There's no me without you. We want to hear from you! Interview with WILSN
We had the pleasure of interviewing WILSN over Zoom video! Australian vocal powerhouse WILSN is thrilled to announce her debut album, Those Days Are Over, out February 3 on Ivy League Records/Universal MusicAustralia (Rolling Blackouts C. F., Hatchie). She also revealed a US headline tour (dates below), following her run with Allen Stone. A fusion of pop, soul, Motown and jazz both classic yet contemporary, WILSN's unbelievable voice & honeyed sound on the record are showcased on single & video debuted today on Under the Radar – "Hurts So Bad" featuring Josh Teskey, lead singer of award-winning Melbourne blues-rock band The Teskey Brothers (even Chris Hemsworth is a fan). Built from a trumpet melody by friend & acclaimed horn player Billy Aukstik (Mark Ronson, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley), the heart-wrenching break-up song is accompanied by a video from Triana Hernandez, where the masterful performers are in full flight. "Right before Covid hit, I toured through Europe and the UK with The Teskey Brothers," WILSN explains. "I was already a fan before this but seeing their show every night and occasionally getting up to sing with them in their set really solidified my love for the band. Josh is one of my favourite singers in the world and I feel super lucky he's singing with me on my debut record." Studying at Melbourne, Australia's prestigious Victorian College of the Arts and playing shows there, WILSN – real name Shannon Busch - was soon noticed by international publishing juggernaut Pulse Music Group (Kehlani, Yebba) / Native Tongue (Courtney Barnett, Aldous Harding) - even going on to play the Melbourne Grand Prix. She briefly moved to Nashville to work with GRAMMY-winning writers, which helped hone her craft for this full album. The influence of soul and powerhouse vocal divas loom large over her debut album, Those Days Are Over. Songs like "If You Wanna Love Me," "Tell Me" and "Hurts So Bad" ooze with the sound, feel and all the emotion of classic soul. Yet while the album is steeped in the sounds of yesterday, WILSN and her partner and producer Stephen Charles (Blessed, Tyne James Organ) took care to balance those classic elements with modern production techniques, leaning on Charles' background in hip hop production to amplify the grooves, dialing up the bottom end and keeping a modern excitement in the mix to make sure the record stood up sonically to contemporary releases. The result is a masterful work, at once timeless and of the now. The album will also be on Apple Music Spatial Audio and vinyl via Vinyl Me Please. We want to hear from you! Interview with Amtrac
We had the pleasure of interviewing Amtrac over Zoom video! All things take time, and time changes everything. For Amtrac, it was the Extra Time alone that made all the difference. Just as lockdown created a very real before and after on the face of our global culture, the producer born Caleb Cornett can use the pandemic to mark the moment he moved from just another producer to a full-on album artist. He's released two full-length albums and a slew of varied singles and EPs, not to mention marquee collaborations with Diplo and Leon Bridges, remixed everyone from Ellie Goulding to Zhu, Two Door Cinema Club and Duke Dumont. He runs his own label, Openers, named in a nod to the way he's managed to straddle both the bright lights of the mainstage world and the taste-making underground without ever losing sense of who he really is—and still, he's never felt quite as focused as this. Emerging from the ambiguity of lockdown with a honed-in perspective, Amtrac rededicates himself to the art of the full-length LP. Extra Time is a 13-track exploration of forced introspection, a cohesive story of confinement and confusion that finishes with a surreal feeling of hope. While the world huddled indoors and washed cereal boxes in a strange mix of fear and bewilderment, Amtrac gathered his synths, computers and headphones and set up a little studio in his Los Angeles loft. In just a few months, he wrote what would become the main skeleton of Extra Time. It may be his third official album, but it's his first to capture a true moment in his life, coming together not as a myriad of pieces made in separate times and places, but as one singular snapshot with a common theme. Tapping into his love of film scores, Extra Time plays with cinematic peaks and valleys, swimming in shades of uncertain mood with pulsing rhythms and uneasy lyrics. Musical intermissions allow space to breathe between rushing tracks, while the cover art and music videos mirror the indie film aesthetic. Extra Time is a journey spent toiling toward something, though one is never quite sure of what. It's about being in the guts of the moment, and the payoff that you make for yourself. It's the beginning of a new chapter, born from a moment of trial that hints at triumphs to come. In the end, Extra Time pays homage to where he's been but walks boldly into a new artistic future. Interview with Caye
We had the pleasure of interviewing Caye over Zoom video! American Music Supply Sign up for updates from American Musical Supply by texting "BIB" to 800-458-4076 & get $20 off your first order of $100 or more. You'll receive about 4 messages per month, message and data rates may apply. Consent not required for purchase, reply HELP for help and STOP to opt out. LA-based artist/producer/songwriter, Caye (pronounced KAI), shares his brand-new single, "LOSE SLEEP." Written and produced by Caye himself, "LOSE SLEEP" is a melancholic, R&B tinged track about being addicted to something you know is bad for you. "LOSE SLEEP" follows the previously released tracks – "SCARS," "MILFORD SOUND," "DOPAMINE," "SOME LAKES" and "WE LOVE PT. 1" – which will be featured on his upcoming debut album, We Love. For the first time in his career, Caye is leaning into what makes him unique, instead of shying away from it. On both a musical and personal level, We Love reflects Caye's own experiences as a creative and as a person. With this project, he feels at home singing over wavy didgeridoo lines, sultry piano, and rock inspired production, but it's the lyrics, themes, and genre-less blend of influences that truly capture who he's evolved into as an artist today. Caye recently announced his first ever headlining tour. Kicking off in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 1st at The Moroccan Lounge, the tour will visit 10 cities across the US including San Diego, CA, Seattle, WA, Washington, DC and New York, NY before wrapping in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, April 1st at Milkboy. Based in Santa Monica, Caye is an artist/producer/songwriter with an evocative falsetto and a gift for melodic improvisation. He's been steadily winning fans across the US and around the world since breaking onto the scene in 2015. Building on his classical training by experimenting with jazz, hip hop, calypso, and reggae, Caye defies genre to create a signature sound that is all his own. Inspired by the creative freedom of Bon Iver, the soul-moving rhythms of Bob Marley, and the lyrical genius of Kanye West, Caye creates music that's as captivating as it is technically complex. Caye has always felt at home behind the console and began by rapping over his beats—earning Wiz Khalifa's attention and ultimately a feature from him on Caye's single "Easy". Throughout the years, bars transformed to choruses and verses, as Caye honed his vocal control, range, and his now signature falsetto. In addition to producing all his own records, Caye has continued to hone his sound by producing for Alessia Cara, Meghan Trainor, and Abhi the Nomad. In 2020, he set out on an artistic exploration, traveling to remote regions of California with his instruments, art supplies, and a band of like-minded creatives. The last 2+ years have culminated in a full-length LP that thrives on headphones and speakers but is best experienced when improvised live—in the same method it was written. Grounded in his love for the steel drum, We Love explores Caye's excellence across instruments that create music that's emotionally engaging and spectacularly cinematic. 2022 promises to be his biggest year yet, which will introduce his expansive new sound to his ever-growing audience. The full album, We Love, will be released as singles, with a new one out each month for the rest of the year. He intends to continue spreading inspiration and building his reputation, with live shows beginning early in 2023. We want to hear from you!
