Interview with Bad Cop Bad Cop

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jennie Cotterill of Bad Cop Bad Cop over the phone! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Bad Cop/Bad Cop released their third full-length, The Ride, on June 19! In a time of chronic rage, happiness is revolutionary. Bad Cop Bad Cop has done angry. The band's 2017 full-length, Warriors, was recorded in the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election. The Los Angeles quartet's new full-length, The Ride (Fat Wreck Chords, June 19th), shows what happens when you come out the other side of that anger. "It's not that I am just stoked or blind to suffering," says singer-guitarist Jennie Cotterill. "I think anger is a legitimate and understandable reaction to injustice and wrongdoing. It's just that for myself, I am trying to move past 'reaction' into productive 'response.'" The message BCBC is sending this time around is less about wagging your finger at others, or giving the middle one to the Man, than it is about self-love and acceptance. As Cotterill puts it, "Love is a more powerful truth than anger." That positivity fuels many of The Ride's tracks: "Originators," "Simple Girl," "Community," "I Choose," "Perpetual Motion Machine," and "The Mirage" exude confidence, gratitude, and compassion. In 2020, such things qualify as contrarian. "These are political statements—self-love is a huge fucking statement," affirms singer-guitarist Stacey Dee. "Self-love means putting a fix on the problems at home before trying to fix everything in the world. It's asking people to find it in themselves to create the life that they really want to have so they're not in turmoil, so they're not in a place of stress and sickness." Dee speaks from experience. In 2018 she was hospitalized twice for different ailments, then discovered she had stage one breast cancer at the end of the year. Fortunately, it was highly treatable, but the experience was life-altering. Dee captures it with brutal frankness on "Breastless," whose bright melodies belie the struggle described in the lyrics. "Certain Kind of Monster" and "Pursuit of Liberty"—both written and sung by bassist Linh Le—are blistering repudiations of the current administration's treatment of immigrants. The former is an imagined conversation with an ICE agent, and the latter juxtaposes her family's immigration to the U.S. from Vietnam in 1975 to current events, something she's never explored musically. The perspective behind The Ride lends it an undeniable maturity, without losing its power. Recorded throughout much of 2018 and 2019 by Johnny Carey and Fat Mike of production team the D-Composers, the album boasts all of the elements of BCBC's sound: big guitars, lock-step bass and drums (the latter by powerhouse drummer Myra Gallarza), intricate vocal harmonies, and plenty of attitude. It's just that this time, the attitude is encouraging, not raging. Nowhere is that more apparent than lilting album closer "Sing With Me." Built around acoustic guitar, piano, and Cotterill's voice, it's an exhortation to "sing with me / or sing your own song / I don't mind, just as long as you find / a voice." Dee adds, "If people are listening to our songs and they're going to sing along to them, they're going to start owning some of those words. And in owning some of those words that gives them some strength and power going forward. That's really the biggest gift that I could give to anybody." "Stronger in every way" aptly describes Bad Cop Bad Cop in 2020. The anger may have taken a back seat on The Ride, but what's taken its place is even more powerful. The Ride track listing: 1. Originators 2. Certain Kind of Monsters 3. Take My Call 4. Simple Girl 5. Breastless 6. Perpetual Motion Machine 7. Community 8. Pursuit of Liberty 9. The Mirage 10. I Choose 11. Chisme 12. Sing With Me We want to hear from you! Interview with Keedron Bryant

️ Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the honor of interviewing Keedron and Johnnetta Bryant! Addressing longstanding systemic racism and social injustice through his music, 13-year-old viral sensation and Florida native Keedron Bryant shares a moving a cappella version of his official single "I JUST WANNA LIVE" via Warner Records released on June 26th. With nothing but heartfelt words and his emotionally charged performance, this stripped-down rendition of "I JUST WANNA LIVE" captivates and chills. The lyrics amplify a much-needed wake-up call in potent and pure poetic fashion as Keedron cries out for justice and equality. His compelling delivery quakes with an intensity well beyond his years, and the music features stirring and anthemic production. Dem Jointz (Rihanna, Brandy, Anderson .Paak) produced the transformative track and Keedron's Mother, Johnetta Bryant, wrote the song. Since its official release last week, "I JUST WANNA LIVE" has continued to attract fervent fan and critical support. CNN observed, "It has become one of the unofficial anthems of a movement as Black Lives Matter protests have occurred around the globe," Pitchfork called it "powerful," TODAY described it as "stirring," and TIME listed it as one of the best new songs of June 2020. Keedron Bryant blessed the 2020 BET Awards with a powerful performance. Keedron has become the voice of the Black Lives Matter movement. "I JUST WANNA LIVE" has notably garnered millions of YouTube views as Bryant earned widespread acclaim and an endorsement from President Barack Obama. He appeared on ABC's primetime special Juneteenth: A Celebration of Overcoming and performed on the NAACP's Juneteenth Black Family Reunion: The Music, The Moments, The Movement—available online [53:02 mark] and on REVOLT TV. In support, Warner Records is donating 100% of the single's net profits to the NAACP, and Amazon Music donated $1 for every Amazon Music stream of the song on JUNETEENTH to the NAACP, contributing $50,000 combined. Get it HERE and watch the lyric video HERE. ABOUT KEEDRON BRYANT: Singing acapella on a smartphone-shot video, Keedron Bryant moved the world to tears with nothing more than his powerhouse voice and the declaration, "I'm a young black man doing all that I can." The 13-year-old Florida native's YouTube performance of "I JUST WANNA LIVE" surged around the globe as a clarion call for change and the unassuming soundtrack to a moment of revolution. He performed the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show via FaceTime, and received acclaim from Good Morning America, CNN, The Steve & Marjorie Harvey Foundation, Access Hollywood, and BBC News. Will Smith incorporated the clip in his "No Justice, No Peace" montage, and LeBron James posted it on Instagram with the caption, "I LOVE YOU KID! I LOVE US!" None other than President Barack Obama also cited it. Born in Sicily to minister parents, Keedron began singing at just five-years-old. Attending church regularly, he developed a passion for gospel music. The budding talent first turned heads on season four of Little Big Shots. Represented by Heather Beverly, Esq. in association with Tabetha Plummer, Esq, and legendary producer Dem Jointz, Keedron catapulted to the top of the conversation in 2020, landing a deal with Warner Records and releasing the official "I JUST WANNA LIVE" single as his debut. With R&B energy, soul range, and gospel power, he will undoubtedly make a major impact. We want to hear from you! Interview with Regulus Red

We had the pleasure of interviewing Regulus Red over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 International, queer, electropop: Regulus Red is the new unabashedly authentic kid on the block. A reckless daydreamer for whom music and fashion are a statement, a means of liberation from a frightened society. Of an Italian-Welsh descent, his heritage would be incomplete without mentioning the likes of Lorde, Lady Gaga, Stromae, Mika, P!nk and Robyn -just a few of the artists who inspire Red's music with their fearless sense of self and powerful lyrics. The visual expression of his music is essential in understanding what he is about, be it the visual mixtape 'Great To Be Alive' which he dropped in early July or the lockdown video he co-created with his fans during lockdown. "I'm just a kid with too many feelings and music was always my friend" With the LGBTQ+ community right by his side and with Edith Piaf in his heart, he embodies equal measures of the feminine and masculine world. But when did it all start? He began writing in Barcelona, Spain. He waited tables during the day and wrote lyrics at night, biking to solitary rocky spots on the beach. Gazing at the dark blue horizon, one song led to another until he realized that what he had was more than just a mere hobby: he would close his eyes and picture melodies and lyrics making love at once right in front of him. After two years of honing his skills, he has now written more than 45 complete songs. His debut EP is coming out at the beginning of September, and with Future Humans as the main producer, you better buckle up. "Inspiration does exist. But it must find you working." We want to hear from you! Interview with TELYKast

We had the pleasure of interviewing TELYKast over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Fusion provokes progress. TELYKast unifies three distinct musical personalities into one genre-busting collective equally suited for clubs and festival stages alike. The Los Angeles trio—Linus Altman-Kurosaki, Kyle Tonoli, and Trevor Klaiman —organically assembles anthemic electronic pop with live instrumentation. The group now backed by Astralwerks continues to push the envelope. They are generating upwards of 40 million streams and over 20 million video views earning praise from Dancing Astronaut, Substream Magazine, and Earmilk, and selling out shows coast-to-coast. "We meet in the middle," exclaims Linus. "I'm an East Coast bedroom producer raised on hip-hop, R&B, and classic rock. Kyle used to DJ underground clubs in Texas. Trevor is a California native with a metal foundation and experience playing shows like Warped Tour. By coming together, our mentality is to always push it forward." "You never typically think of electronic music as being made on live instruments," adds Kyle. "We thought, 'Why not?' We decided to make a band in the electronic world." Fate placed TELYKast together. The son of two Julliard-schooled parents, Linus grew up in New York's Upper West Side. His dad taught him about songwriting, chord structure, harmonies, and theory at a young age. He picked up violin at four-years-old before transitioning to blues and jazz guitar. In between constantly playing and listening to everyone from Phish to D'Angelo, he excelled in the pool and became a Division One platform diver. Suffering an injury, he transferred to Icon Collective. Upon settling in Los Angeles, he ended up sharing a room with Kyle. The Texas native played hockey around the world and discovered Benny Benassi on a trip to Sweden. Facing his own injury, he decided to pursue music full-time, which brought him to Icon. Forming an early incarnation of TELYKast as a duo in 2014, they uploaded remixes such as "Heatwave" and built a growing fan base online. Simultaneously, Trevor cut his teeth in metal upstarts Burn Bridges, gracing the stages of legendary venues such as Whisky-A-Go-Go and the Troubadour. While working at a studio, he met Linus and Kyle. With Trevor on the mic, the three of them "immediately clicked," as he puts it. Soon after, they all shared the same house. The boys teamed up with Ellusive for the single "You & I" [feat. Shara]. Right out of the gate, Trap Nation touted it, and the band steadily caught fire. Over the next three years, one banger after another followed, including "Every Every" [TELYKast Remix] with MOONZz (over 6.1 million streams), "There For You" (3 million streams), and "Worth Fighting For" with Rico & Miella (2.2 million streams) in addition to collaborations with legendary producer Kaskade, platinum songstress Georgia Ku, Arlissa, and Aly Ryan. As a result, they emerged as a formidable force on stage with Linus on guitar, Kyle on drum pads, and Trevor on vocals and guitar. The trio played sold out shows at Exchange LA and Social Hall SF as well as various college events across the US. "We can do a straight DJ set or a hybrid set" adds Trevor, "It's all about that versatility." "People would tell us, 'You can't pull out a guitar over track drops'," recalls Kyle. "However, the crowd freaked out the first time we brought the guitars out at a show. We knew we were on to something." This approach crystallizes on their single "DAYLIGHT" with One True God. Live guitar and natural bass tones converge on a precipitous drop before the irresistible refrain from Trevor's vocals, "She only loves me in the moonlight. She always leaves me in the daylight." Not only did it amass 3 million streams, but it also transformed into a TikTok phenomenon. Support came from top TikTok stars Addison Rae (36.8 million followers), Mads Lewis (7.8 million followers), and other heavyweights. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with The Hunna

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ryan of The Hunna over Zoom video with special guest co-host Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 "Was it Epicetus who said "it's not what happens to you but how you react to it that matters"? It was, because we've looked it up. And while we don't know exactly who Epicetus was, he definitely had a point – and that point says everything about UK rock band The Hunna. Hailing from Watford, Herts, The Hunna – singer/guitarist Ryan Potter, lead guitarist Dan Dorney, bassist Junate Angin and drummer Jack Metcalfe – are four guys living the classic rock 'n' roll dream – one of touring, tattoos and tearing up the world's most iconic venues, and they've already got to phenomenal levels of fandom as, largely, a word-of-mouth success story. But just as The Hunna's dreams align with those of bands since time immemorial, they also managed to step into the oldest trap in the music industry – falling foul of a manager who locked them into a deal, with a company he owned but which now no longer exists. There are a long list of creditors - of which The Hunna has to be one of the largest. Tough times. But before the nitty gritty of that, the happy conclusion: The Hunna are back with a thrilling third album and a stonking great attitude that's alluded to in the title: I'd Rather Die Than Let You In. It was recorded in that most classic of band boltholes, Los Angeles, with crack producer John Feldmann, who achieved great success as the singer of ska punk heroes Goldfinger and went on to produce Blink-182, Fever 333, Twenty One Pilots, Refused, Panic! At The Disco, Black Veil Brides, All Time Low and many more, notching up sales in the tens of millions in the process. A workday with Feldmann involves surfing trips, morning boxing sessions and afternoon drop-ins from half of LA's music scene – a far cry from the cold North London studio in which they recorded 2018's Dare. The whole experience, says Ryan, "was a bit of a mindfuck, in the best way possible." The producer encouraged the band to work in new ways, freestyling vocals in the booth and recording with great speed – they wrote three songs on their very first day together. The last, written in 20 minutes, became I Wanna Know, which debuted in their 2019 festival sets and opens the album after the introductory One Hell Of A Gory Story… "John Feldmann is one hell of a character," says Ryan I've never met anyone like John, and I couldn't imagine not knowing him now. He's such a big part of what we're doing." Feldmann's methods bore dark fruit, freeing the group to exorcise their demons into music that reveals an intensity of fire and fury that could only come from taking hard knocks and picking themselves back up again. It's self-assured, confident and – most of all – collaborative, with multiple co-writes and features. Among the guests are some who arrived via Feldmann's bulging contact book - Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy stopped by to write a tune and Blink-182's Travis Barker appears on Cover You. Some guests came via the band's connections, like co-writers Carl Barat of The Libertines and Mike Duce of Lower Than Atlantis and up-coming LA singer Phem, the female vocalist on If This Is Love. Phem was someone Ryan had admired from afar who the band met, by chance, at Halsey's Halloween party (Ryan dressed as Garth from Wayne's World, Dan went as Marilyn Manson – as did Halsey. Awks). "I heard her music about a year ago and I knew I wanted her for this one track I had," says Ryan. "Dan was outside for a smoke at the party, he asked a girl for a lighter, they got to talking and it turned out to be Phem. Dan said, 'I'm pretty sure our lead singer is super into your music…', he messaged me and I came running out. The track came out better than I'd even imagined." While the collaborations are certainly noteworthy, they're possibly not the most attention-grabbing thing about th --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Ayron Jones

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ayron Jones Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 AYRON JONES – Guitarist & singer Ayron Jones whose songwriting is filled with raw emotion is the new sound of Seattle in 2020. The gritty, genre-blending artist is an amalgam of the incredibly rich history of the city, from Jimi Hendrix to Nirvana to Sir Mix-A-Lot who produced Jones' first independent record. Now primed to bring his unique sound to the rest of the world, his explosive single "Take Me Away" is released on June 19 via Big Machine/John Varvatos Records. "Take Me Away" pulls Jones' diverse influences into a style that is at once both familiar and yet distinctly his own, with firm footing in the nostalgia of rock music. The tones and musical roots may be familiar, but the story is unique to Jones and the struggles and darkness that shaped his art. With a tumultuous childhood marred by parental addiction and abandonment, the weight of Jones' past became the inspiration for "Take Me Away". "'Take Me Away' was about how music was my escape, how I sometimes felt stuck in my own personal prison of isolation and solitude that I'd constructed for myself," explains Jones. "Music was my release, and from the darkness I could create something beautiful, and not be defined by my history." While gaining a following as an independent artist Jones has become part of the fabric of the Northwest city, opening for Guns 'N' Roses at the Gorge and B.B. King, as well as working with Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin and Eric Lilavois at the iconic London Bridge Studio. The city has championed his sound with consistently sold out shows, and Jones has been embraced by the city's wealth of music royalty including Duff McKagan, Mike McCready, and more. Jones' ascent also broke barriers in the rock music world, and he explains "being black in the rock industry, I was forging a path into establishments and onto tours that had not previously embraced an artist like me. But the one thing that always changed minds and spoke for itself was the music." His reach now extends well beyond Seattle, playing alongside such acts as Run DMC, Public Enemy, Rahkim, Jeff Beck, Theory of a Deadman, Robin Trower, and Spearhead, plus notable festival performances to include SXSW, Sasquatch, and Bumbershoot.
