Interview with GHOS7
ββWe had the pleasure of interviewing Corey Cray (GHOS7) over the phone! ββPlease share while we are #togetherathome βπ β ββMany artists are shaped by the places they come from. But for the 25-year-old singer, songwriter, and producer GHOS7 (pronounced "ghost"), that wasn't the case. ββBorn Corey Cray to musical parents based in Charlotte, North Carolina, GHOS7 never quite felt connected to the area. From a young age, he had his sights set on much greener pastures and was moved by stories from beyond the confines of the Tar Heel State. ββ"My mom took me to see Oliver! when I was a kid, and when it was over, I left crying," he remembers. "I turned to my mom and was like, 'I want to be on that stage.'" ββThough it is rare for such a young child to be so moved by a piece of art, GHOS7's passion for performance hardly came as a surprise. Growing up, his father introduced him to bands like Toto, Chicago, Journey, Dixie Dregs, Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fireβ"anything that was really musical." Both his parents also played music at their church, with his mother playing more traditional fare, and his father handling the contemporary stuff. GHOS7 himself took up the guitar and began learning from his father how to pick up on even the most minor details in a piece of music. "That was our thing," he says. ββGHOS7 went on to spend his childhood performing in Broadway tours and appearing on kids' television shows, including Cartoon Network's Fried Dynamite!, and experimenting with music ("I was making full-on metal tracks and singing and full screaming on them in my bedroom"). He eventually moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting full-time, attending auditions, and working at a production house, where he learned even more about sound. After becoming disenchanted with his acting venture his dad convinced him to move to Nashville, and shift his focus to his original love: music.ββ ββThe self-described trap-pop artist initially moved for a recording job but was ultimately let go after his studio was bought out. Desperate for a steady income, he began producing karaoke tracks, recreating some of the most popular songs of all time note for note. In this role, he was able to utilize the analytical skills he learned from his father, recognizing the intricacies in each song and mimicking them. ββFrom there, he began producing his own music, befriending and selling hip-hop and trap beats to up and coming rappers in the area. One day, he realized that just as he had learned production skills, he could learn about writing and performing lyrics, just as his rapper friends had, and he began taking songwriting and vocals more seriously. Eventually, he was given the name GHOS7 by Young Buck, whom he met through the local artists he was producing for. ββ"I always start with a beat. It took me a while to really perfect my lyricism craft," he confesses. "But really, it was all about confidence in myself. I had to go through some life experiences that changed me, to even want to be an artist." ββββHe says that the adjustment to Nashville, and seeing the music industry up close, has been a darker experience than he was anticipating; "but I've prevailed and destroyed all those demons, and now I'm on top and I can tell my story." ββWith his debut singles on the way, GHOS7 is on a mission to empower other people in the same way music has helped him to empower himself, to help them "break down their barriers and their walls, and to send [them] a strong message of feeling good about themselves." ββWe want to hear from you! Interview with Stacy Jones (American Hi-Fi, Letters to Cleo, Atwater Punx, etc)
We had the pleasure of interviewing Stacy Jones (American Hi-Fi, Letters to Cleo, Atwater Punx, etc) over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome π A blood-pumping hybrid of late-70's British punk and 90's alt-rock, Atwater Punx is defined by the music that inspires husband and wife duo, Stacy Jones and Kristen Wagner Jones. The songs are the first collaboration of its kind for the couple who have spent the entirety of their careers creating music apart. After the birth of their son, Waylon, the time finally felt right to team up sonically. Spending toddler nap times and post-bedtime putdowns in their home studio, they began to craft a new set of songs that encompassed their love for bands like The Clash and Bikini Kill. While Stacy, a full- time drummer and in-demand musical director for artists like Miley Cyrus, 5 Seconds of Summer and Troye Sivan, was filling his days with show production and rehearsals, Kristen had switched gears from fronting her indie band, Bullet & Snowfox, to life as a stay-at-home mom. The two would chip away at new tunes whenever feasible, but when Coronavirus hit and the world came to a grinding halt, the couple finally found the time and inspiration to hunker down and finish the songs that had become a true labor of love. The result is their debut EP 'The Flea Draws Blood.' MORE ON STACY JONES Stacy Jones got his start as the frontman and main songwriter for American Hi-Fi, who had the 2001 hit "Flavor of the Weak." After the peak of the American Hi-Fi days, his career took the most unlikely of turns into being a touring and studio drummer and a Music Director. Thirteen years in Jones is one of the most in-demand music directors in his field - working with chart-topping artists like Miley Cyrus, Noah Cyrus, 5 Seconds of Summer, the Chainsmokers and Troye Sivan among others. In addition to the MD work, he still works as a drummer, writer, musician, producer (Bob Rock was his mentor) and tours consistently. He is an active member of his band'S American Hi-Fi, and Letters to Cleo, has been the touring drummer for Matchbox Twenty since 2012, and even has a great story about recording vocals with MΓΆtley CrΓΌe. Last year he did double duty on the Letters to Cleo fall tour, opening with his band American Hi-Fi then playing drums with the headlining act, Letters to Cleo. He has a great routine and story about getting into shape for that tour. Interview with Liv Charette
We had the pleasure of interviewing Liv Charette over Zoom audio! ββ ββPlease share while we are #togetherathome βπ β ββ ββCountry singer/songwriter Liv Charette recently released her debut single "That Kind of Song." The powerful ballad was penned by iconic country songwriter Andrew Dorff ("My Eyes" (Blake Shelton), "Yours If You Want It" (Rascal Flatts)) and Barry Dean ("Pontoon" (Little Big Town), "Diamond Rings and Old Barstools" (Tim McGraw)) over ten years ago. The rangy, sweeping vocals required led Dorff's father and the song's producer, Steve Dorff on an eight-year quest to find the right artist capable of singing the emotional song. Interview with alextbh
ββWe had the pleasure of interviewing alextbh over Zoom video! ββ ββPlease share while we are #togetherathome βπ β ββ ββMalaysian artist alextbh has been making waves in the R&B/pop world for the last few years and has just released his debut EP on July 17th called The Chase. ββ ββThe Kuala Lumpur native is not only one to watch among rising musicians but has also used his platform and voice to speak out for LGBTQ rights in his historically conservative homeland of Malaysia where the government has been highly opposed to queer rights. ββ ββBlending a lush mix of electronics, R&B, and pop, creating emotive songs that are relatable in theme while pushing sonic boundaries, alextbh is asserting himself as a big one to keep an eye on with his debut EP, out now. Interview with Emma Zander
ββWe had the pleasure of interviewing Emma Zander over the phone! ββ ββPlease share while we are #togetherathome βπ β ββ ββEmma's an incredible alt-pop singer/songwriter, actress, and activist who's been featured on MTV, Entertainment Tonight and Refinery 29. On June 25th, she's released her new single "America's Favorite Tranquilizer". ββ ββ"America's Favorite Tranquilizer" is a bold, quirky anthem for the disillusioned. The song is a tale about everything we use to numb ourselves: from Netflix, to weed, to social media, to binge eating, to sex. Left to our own devices and quarantined with our own thoughts and vices, we've leaned on our "tranquilizers" now more than ever. Emma finished recording the song in her bathroom after the LA lockdown was put in place, and the corresponding video was filmed completely in quarantine, using dollar store props. It even features a surprise "cameo" from Harry Styles. ββ ββEmma Zander sings about what it means to be a twenty-something right now. Born & raised in NY, Zander moved to the West Coast to pursue music after graduating NYU Tisch for Musical Theatre. Her introspective songwriting & ethereal vocals have garnered major attention in the EDM world, as she performed at and even wrote the theme song for Electric Daisy Carnival Vegas. Zander's music has also been featured on MTV, USA, Entertainment Tonight, & Refinery29. As a featured vocalist and top-line writer, Zander has appeared on the Corporate Slackers' Wasted Love (Tiesto's Musical Freedom), & Bryce Vine's rap track, Bella, hailing over 15 million streams & counting. But it's her own edgy pop records & self-produced videos that truly solidify her identity as an artist -- and a powerful female voice of her generation. ββ ββhttps://www.facebook.com/EmmaZanderMusic ββhttps://www.instagram.com/emmazander ββhttps://twitter.com/emmazandermusic ββ ββWe want to hear from you! Interview with Dead Lakes
ββWe had the pleasure of interviewing Dead Lakes over Zoom video! ββ ββPlease share while we are #togetherathome ββ ββ ββSometimes, it's the things we love the most that swallow us up, till we drown. DEAD LAKES make music for anyone who feels the sting of broken connections, failed relationships, and challenging circumstances, yet nevertheless will muster the strength and hope to carry onward. ββ ββOn NEW LANGUAGE, the band's first EP with SharpTone, DEAD LAKES stake a claim of ownership across multiple genres, from irresistible pop and R&B to energized anthemic rock. It's a bold sound with huge appeal any fan of The Neighbourhood, PVRIS, or Bring Me The Horizon. ββ ββDEAD LAKES teamed up with producer Erik Ron (Godsmack, Dance Gavin Dance, Set It Off) for the five songs that comprise NEW LANGUAGE. A blend of classic alt-rock radio anthem making, electronic infused R&B flourishes, and passionate post-hardcore, DEAD LAKES songs emphasize empowerment and purpose. The Pacific Northwest outfit is energetic, genre-fluid, and following a creative muse wherever it may lead. ββ ββSeattle based Dead Lakes recently released their first EP since signing to SharpTone Records, New Language, on May 1st. Interview with Baby FuzZ
ββWe had the pleasure of interviewing Baby FuzZ (Brandon Lowry aka Sterling Fox) over the phone! ββ ββPlease share while we are #togetherathome βπ β ββ ββBaby FuzZ is the audiovisual glam rock and " normcore" brainchild of produce and sing writer Sterling Fox. After producing Lan Del Rey's "Video Games," Fox was on his way to becoming one of the most in-demand and successful pop songwriters in the business having written with and for artists Madonna, Max Martin, Elle King, Avicii, Lana Del Rey, Britney Spears and more (see the full list HERE). Upon the election of Donald Trump, and at the peak of Fox's songwriting career he disappeared from music and split for Canada, spending a year in Montreal, reemerging as Baby FuzZ. ββ ββBaby FuzZ unapologetically jumps all over the genre map, with songs ranging from folk ballads to punk anthems and everything in between. As diverse as the music is, the lyrics are a singular and hyper self-aware narrative with strong political and social undertones. Last year Baby FuzZ, released his debut album Plastic Paradise independently and embarked on a 100 date DIY tour around the US. Last year was just the start for Baby FuzZ rising from the death rattle of a previous life of overthought pop demos hat had finally eaten itself alive with a sense of ennui. ββ ββ "Weekend Blues" from his forthcoming concept album Welcome To The Future. The song is a wild mariachi influenced pop jam written from the point of view of a lonely person who goes to a party and dissects the universe in their head instead of having fun. It's a great preview into what he is doing now. ββ ββ ββhttps://babyfuzzz.com/ ββhttps://www.instagram.com/babyfuzzzz/ ββhttp://www.facebook.com/babyfuzzz ββhttps://www.youtube.com/c/BabyFuzZ ββ ββ ββ ββWe want to hear from you!
