Interview with Will Wood
We had the pleasure of interviewing Will Wood over the phone! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Will Wood has been said to have appeared out of nowhere, stumbling out of a hallucinogenic haze in 2015. He immediately began attracting attention and controversy with his eccentric and difficult-to-pin-down public persona and provocative performance art. Joined by his band "The Tapeworms," Wood confused and excited audiences and press alike with his constantly shifting, genre-defying musical style and over-the-top performances, which often featured light shows, acrobatics, standup comedy, and other theatrical elements that challenged the status quo of the local scene. Over the past few years, Wood and his band "The Tapeworms" (Matt Berger, Vater Boris, Mike Bottiglieri, Mario Conte) have developed an uncomfortably large (and on occasion, borderline dangerous) cult following and received rave reviews from media outlets and fans alike from all over the world. Shortly after entering recovery at the beginning of his career, Wood was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and began treatment. He has since begun to take a new direction with his work, dedicated to giving back to the world in the form of charity funded by merch, tickets, and music sales, and using his music to try and inspire others with their own struggles. He now leads a reclusive life in rural New Jersey, having turned his back on social media, with the exception of his Patreon account, where he publishes most of his work as one of the top 1% of creators. Will Wood worked with his tightly-knit community of followers to crowdfund his latest album, "The Normal Album." (Say-10 Records) which was fully funded in its first day. The album raised ~$28,000 by selling everything from the chance to appear on the record to a cut of sales, and was produced by Jonathon Maisto, with a guest appearance by multi-platinum Panic! At the Disco producer Matt Squire. "The Normal Album" is set for a July 10th release, and Will Wood plans to resume touring as soon as this nightmare is over. We want to hear from you! Interview with Charming Liars
We had the pleasure of interviewing Charming Liars over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Charming Liars evolution began in London's West End when guitarist Karnig Manoukian and bassist Mike Kruger were still in their teens. They both came from homes with wide-ranging and eclectic musical tastes, and that early exposure informed their approach to making music. They started writing and playing together in a series of bands and honed their musicianship with several tours up and down the U.K. In 2013 they decided to make the move to Los Angeles, in part spurred on by an encouraging social media message from songwriter and producer John Feldmann (Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T's, 5 Seconds of Summer, Blink-182) – who told them to look him up for a songwriting session if they were ever in town. Interview with Caitlyn Smith
We had the pleasure of interviewing Caityln Smith over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Listen to her new album Supernova: https://linktr.ee/caitlynsmith Caitlyn released her sophomore album Supernova on March 13, and she's been named one of Amazon Music's Artists to Watch for 2020. She's a critically-acclaimed songwriter who recently tied with Elton John for a Critic's Choice award for best original song for "Glasgow (No Place Like Home)," and she's written for artists including Meghan Trainor & John Legend ("Like I'm Gonna Lose You"), Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers ("You Can't Make Old Friends"), Cassadee Pope, James Bay, Garth Brooks, among others. Caitlyn grew up in Cannon Falls, MN, and started her first band when she was 12 years old. When her parents realized how serious she was about music, they offered to let her use her college fund to record an album - but she also had to pay them back so she could learn to recoup money as a musician. She moved to Nashville to make it big, but wasn't prepared for how difficult it would be to make it (her song "This Town is Killing Me" from her debut album Starfire is a heart-wrenching tale of her struggles). She realized you could make a career out of songwriting, and she honed her craft to make sure she had the best songs possible but never gave up on making it as a singer (this sometimes backfired because labels wanted the songs instead of signing her). She ended up recording her debut album on her own, and she then caught the attention of Monument Records, and they signed her. She tours extensively, bringing her whole family on the road - her husband is in her band, and their two young sons travel with them. We want to hear from you! Interview with Friday Pilots Club
We had the pleasure of interviewing Caleb and Drew of Friday Pilots Club over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Check out their latest single Breaking My Bones: https://fridaypilotsclub.lnk.to/BMBPR FRIDAY PILOTS CLUB - That seemingly pristine way in which certain individuals are able to connect with one another so seamlessly lies at the heart of Friday Pilots Club's success. As the chief masterminds of fiery new alternative act, singer Caleb Hiltunen and multi-instrumentalist Drew Polovick are a perfect match. It's the way their talents complement one another — Hiltunen as the unorthodox naturalist; Polovick the classically trained stickler for sonic details — that's since coalesced into something truly special. In only a matter of years, Friday Pilots Club has emerged from Chicago as one of the hottest new alt-rock acts — a duo creating the sort of no-nonsense multi-dimensional, exploratory alternative music that's both immediately recognizable and undoubtedly fresh-sounding. "Everything is right on the mark," Caleb says of their sweet pop-infused sound, influenced as much by early-aughts indie bands as the classic rock touchstones of their youth. It's all on display with their forthcoming debut EP, six tracks of lustrous alt-rock explosiveness with a gut-punch of character which will be released via Big Machine/John Varvatos Records, including the call-and-response "Looked Better In Gold," the pummeling "Breaking My Bones," the infectious pop bounce of "Change For You" and the meditative "Glad To Be Here." Taken on the whole, the EP showcases the duo's flair for the dramatic, and, more importantly, a musical chemistry equal-parts crisp and cunning that ties together with Hiltunen's undeniably soulful vocals – an uncommon and much sought-after mix of sultry, scathing and sweet. Interview with Cat Clyde
We had the pleasure of interviewing Cat Clyde over Zoom audio! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Cat Clyde is an established, internationally-renowned, singer/songwriter based out of rural Ontario, Canada. A combination of driven, soulful blues and sweet, folk-tinged, dulcet tones that carry a particular sense of familiarity provide the structure on which she creates her unique sound. With influences ranging from Patsy Cline and Lead Belly to Karen Dalton and Bobbie Gentry, this patchwork of musical significance, when stitched to her modern approach, fits like a well-tailored, corduroy-road cloth. Cat's debut album, Ivory Castanets, was released in May of 2017 and featured her hit single, "Mama Said," which garnered the attention of music critics alike and has amassed over 20 million streams worldwide. Since then, Cat has been on a roll, touring across Canada, the United States, and Europe. She has shared the stage with Detroit's renowned singer-songwriter Rodriguez (of acclaimed documentary, Searching for Sugarman), the legendary Paul Kelly, and has since rocked a sold-out tour in Europe with Shakey Graves. Her second album, Hunters Trance, was released June of 2019 and its first single "All The Black" immediately shot to number 1 on the popular blog Hype Machine. She then embarked on her first headlining tour of Canada and the US, selling out clubs on both coasts. Her newest offering, Good Bones, out now, is a collection of stripped-back songs from her first two albums. Showing the strength in the simplicity of a guitar, a voice, and a good song. Interview with Ocean Alley
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ocean Alley over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Ocean Alley are a kaleidoscopic Australian group that recently released a new record, Lonely Diamond. Ocean Alley recently released a video for their single "Hot Chicken": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uuykasSdfI Grappling with spiraling out of control, "Hot Chicken" encapsulates the seduction and suffering that comes from wrestling with the devil on one's shoulder. Accentuated by the dangerous edge of vocalist Baden Donegal's voice, 'I'll be the razor if you want to play', the taunting driving guitars intensify the feeling to fight. Threaded with echoes of an Ennio Morricone Spaghetti Western score, the song's expansive soundscape grows and conquers, transporting the listener to the middle of a dusty stand-off in a state of isolation and emptiness. Drawing from the nostalgia of music eras past, Lonely Diamond combines 70s guitar rock, country, western, old school funk and synth-heavy new wave to create a deeply contemplative and atmospheric odyssey. Reminiscent of music legends including Fleetwood Mac, Dire Straits and Pink Floyd. From its sprawling opening notes, the record feels like a seamless progression following their last album, 2018's Chiaroscuro, with exploration and escapism forming two central themes that unfold and transform across the 12 tracks. Guitarist Mitch Galbraith explains, "It's pushing forward into the unknown… taking a journey to a different place or a different time that seems familiar or that you've been before and all the emotions and feels that come with that." There's an ingrained familiarity with this record from the first listen – all the elements that define Ocean Alley's sound are there, but more intricately arranged; new instruments are introduced, the production is pushed to new limits and the band has created complete synergy between each track. Album opener "Dahlia" mystically sets the scene with an intergalactic introduction, while the introspective title-track "Lonely Diamond" engulfs the listener in a wave of melancholy before finding purpose with warmth and tenderness. Hopefulness is intrinsically linked with these anxieties, feelings, and experiences explored. The bright and dreamy "Up In There" creates an uplifting sense of reassurance that everything will be okay, with its soaring harmonies, swirling guitars, and ethereal keys. Produced by long-time collaborator Callum Howell at the idyllic Grove Studios (built by INXS' Garry Gary Beers), Lonely Diamond follows the success of Ocean Alley's acclaimed second full-length LP Chiaroscuro. With its infectious blend of psychedelic surf-rock, the record propelled the band into national prominence. With selling 25,000 tickets and having 15 sold-out shows that year in Australia alone – culminating with their ARIA nominated, double platinum-selling single 'Confidence' taking out #1 in triple j's Hottest 100 of 2018. Their breakthrough year was then backed-up with 30 sold-out shows around the world in 2019, in addition to major festival appearances at Reading & Leeds Festival (UK), Splendour In The Grass (AUS), Sziget (HU), Bottlerock (US) and more, with the band amassing more than 250 million streams to date. Interview with Josie Cotton
We had the pleasure of interviewing Josie Cotton over Zoom audio! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 "JOSIE COTTON makes the unlistenable unforgettable," wrote legendary filmmaker/actor/artist John Waters about the New Wave icon's upcoming album INVASION OF THE B-GIRLS on which she covers the theme songs of campy cult films. When you have a quote like that from the supreme King of Cult Classics, you pretty much don't need to do anything else in life but dig a hole and lie in it. Thankfully, however, the illustrious and gorgeous Josie Cotton has other plans. Instead of grabbing a shovel and heaving soil, Josie Cotton released her new album on May 1, 2020 via her label Kitten Robot Records. Originally released on CD only (no vinyl, no digital, no downloads, no streaming, no cassette, no nothing!) in 2007, Invasion of the B-Girls has been meticulously remastered and includes, for the very first time, the single "Female Trouble" from John Waters' infamous and celebrated 1974 cult classic of the same name. Along with new artwork and packaging, Invasion of the B-Girls finds Josie revisiting the themes from obscure and ofttimes subversive midnight movies like Russ Meyer's 1970 camp classic Beyond The Valley of the Dolls ("Days of Now And Then"), "Green Slime" from Kinji Fukasaku's 1968 film of the same name, and Koji Hashimoto/R.K. Kizer's 1985 creature feature reboot Return of Godzilla ("Goodbye Godzilla"). "I was obsessed with science fiction movies since childhood, a lot of which you could call B-movies, but seeing Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! as an adult was a kind of Come-to-Jesus moment for me," explains Josie about her inspiration to cover these forgotten "classics." "The whole world of B-movie culture opened up... the demented humor and in-your-face irreverence toward society all spoke to me. And the best ones all seemed to be from the 1960s and 1970s for some reason." Produced by Josie Cotton, punk legend Geza X (Black Flag, Dead Kennedys), and Bill Rhea (Del Rubio Triplets), Invasion of the B-Girls includes liner notes written by John Waters. Among the guest performers on the album are David Kendrick (Devo, Sparks), Paul Roessler (Screamers, Twisted Roots), Geza X, Kenny Lyon (Spain), and Tower of Power's horn section which appears on the single "Female Trouble." As an artist who experienced a huge surge in popularity with such massive international singles "Johnny Are You Queer?," "Jimmy Loves Maryanne," and "He Could Be The One", Josie saw the exciting potential in digging deep into these annals of pop culture cinema and pulling out some fun covers for Invasion... "You kind of have to abandon your idea of what is 'good' or 'bad' in this genre. The acting and writing and cinematography are horrendous yet wildly entertaining. It's the same feeling I got watching bad science fiction when I was a little girl... minus the sex and violence. It's an acquired taste if ever," she laughs. From the built-for-hot-rod-cruising first track "Get Off the Road" from She Devils on Wheels (1968, dir. Herschel Gordon Lewis) to the slinky noir of "Who Killed Teddy Bear?" from the film of the same name (1965, dir. Joseph Cates), to the psychedelic and trippy "Shiawaseo Yobo" from Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964, dir. Ishiro Honda), Invasion of the B-Girls is immersive in its cinematic glory. Josie Cotton "Get Off The Road" from She Devils on Wheels Link/Embed: https://youtu.be/TToyJMYRDS8 "I first got the idea one night when I was watching Ghidora the Three-Headed Monster," she recalls. "I had seen that movie so many times, but there is a moment in that movie when these tiny twin princesses who live in a flower are singing the most heartbreakingly beautiful song to Mothra... pleading with her to save the world. It was strange and beautiful and funny and sad all at the same time." From a Godzilla-sized seed grew a sprout that eventually turned into Invasion of the B-Gi --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/
