Interview with Mike Doughty

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Doughty over Zoom video! Founder of Soul Coughing, Doughty left that band in 2000, recording the album Skittish with iconic indie-rock producer Mark Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500, Ann Magnuson)—a hard left turn from sample-based groove music to stark acoustic songs. He recorded Haughty Melodic in close collaboration with Dan Wilson (Adele, Dixie Chicks), releasing it on Dave Matthews' ATO Records (Matthews tracked down Doughty at Bonnaroo 2004, gushing about Doughty's song 27 Jennifers, from Rockity Roll). Then came appearances on David Letterman (Letterman and Paul Shaffer repeated the word "haughty" back and forth to each other), the soundtrack to the cult show Veronica Mars, and radio hits "27 Jennifers" and "Looking at World From the Bottom of a Well." In 2014, "Light Will Keep Your Heart Beating in the Future" spent two weeks at number one on public radio in the United States. The veteran singer-songwriter's new band, Ghost of Vroom, with bassist and longtime collaborator Andrew "Scrap" Livingston, releasing their debut Ghost of Vroom 2 EP on Mod y Vi Records. Possessing a sense of urgency streaked through every one of his lyrics, as well as a dynamic, genre-blending approach to songcraft, the new collection is a formidable introduction to the latest era in the former Soul Coughing frontman's fascinating career. Interview with Car Astor

We had the pleasure of interviewing Car Astor over Zoom video! New York-based pop powerhouse Car Astor has gone softer and much more personal on her new 'mostly' acoustic album, you say you love me…but i don't believe you. It's appropriate that the beautifully haunting, "everything stays unspoken" was the first single from this Car's debut album, as she explains, "This was the first song that I wrote for this body of work, and it ended up completely shaping my musical journey for the year or so afterwards. Lyrically speaking, this song is about this connection that I had with my best friend that was very confusing at the time and was never openly and honestly discussed between the two of us." It's that vulnerability that makes this new music from Car so special. Watch the video for "everything stays unspoken" shot by friend and fellow musician, Morgan Saint The album, as a whole, is also quite a lane change for the self-taught multi-instrumentalist from Long Island. After stepping out from behind the drums (where she started at 13) Car began writing songs and singing the leads. Having gone viral in 2016 under the moniker SEE when her music video for "Potions" went viral (currently over 7 million views), Car released her debut EP Ties – produced by Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins, Liz Phair, Veruca Salt) quickly establishing her uniquely lush blend of raw feelings, pop, and everything real. Fast forward to 2019, changing from SEE to Car Astor, she found herself ready to make a major change as her artistic career developed and she became the consummate singer-songwriter. Enter you say you love me…but i don't believe you. Whether her more electronically charged music, or this new vulnerable and personal side, Car's lyrics have always touched on real, raw feelings, nerves, and emotions. This album, though, tends to be much more personal than in the past, "I was deeply caught up and consumed by the emotional relationship I was experiencing with my best friend, so much so, that for the first time in a while, I began writing without any sort of purpose," she confesses. "I started connecting with music more than I ever had, and every day I found myself getting more brave and more open." Car Astor is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community and has performed at various Pride festivals across the country. We want to hear from you! Interview with My Kid Brother

We had the pleasure of interviewing Christian Neonakis of My Kid Brother over Zoom video! My Kid Brother rose up out of Leesburg, VA with a singular sound reflective of the city's small-town intimacy, yet wildly ambitious all at once. The quintet—Christian Neonakis [vocals, guitar], Piano Whitman [keyboard, vocals], Sam Athanas [drums], Dylan Savopolous [guitar], and Richard Smith [bass]—fuse warm piano, wistful psychedelic melodies, off-kilter guitar, wiry grooves, iridescent harmonies, and male-female vocal interplay throughout their self-titled debut EP for Fearless Records, My Kid Brother. "We've definitely gotten a lot of inspiration and support from where we come from," exclaims Richard. "There's no place like Leesburg. There's a lot of excitement in the community around music. When I think of all the places I've lived, not one gave a fuck about music quite like this place does. It helped us grow." "Leesburg gave us the confidence to try as hard as we could," agrees Christian. "We never want to lose sight of that." It all starts there too… As the story goes, Christian and Sam worked together at a local restaurant back in 2015. After meeting Dylan, they began jamming before inviting Richard into the fold. The lineup cemented upon Piano's addition during October 2018. Inspired by a multitude of different artists and genres, they fashioned a singular interpretation of alternative: one that mined the highs and lows of pop and the nuances of rock. The soundscape teeters between ecstatic piano, nimble guitar, and dynamic vocal transmissions. Beyond music, their bonds even extend to their respective living situations. As such, the friendship took precedence over everything—as evidenced by the mantra "Take Care of Each Other." "Within the band, we always make sure everyone is doing okay first," assures Piano. "Our emotions, feelings, and friendship come before anything. The music comes second. We're such close friends. 'Take Care of Each Other' extends to listeners, because we hope people know we care when they hear us." Signed to Fearless Records in 2019, they formally introduced themselves on "Native Tongue." Bluesy distorted guitar seesaws between a steady beat before Christian carries a biting and bold hook, "Someone take me home, cut me through the clouds, back to Leesburg, I found out, I'm a sentimental dog who come's around but don't belong. I miss my native tongue." It all builds towards a punky freak-out and wish to fly back East. "I was in L.A., and I wanted to go home," Christian admits. "It's a love song to my home, my family, and my friends." On the single "Daydream," ethereal keys underscore a sunny chorus, "Let us leave on a ship called LSD," as the guitar swings towards a wonderfully wobbly strut. Christian goes, "The lyrics explore the whole idea of a counterculture. You're not letting standardized social norms devour individuality and innocence." Elsewhere, handclaps and a theatrical bass line reverberate alongside Christian's falsetto on "Smile (Losing My Mind)." Underneath a frenetic chant, the band recorded "a whole bar interaction next door, ordering shots and capturing crowd noise" before a "guitar solo played through a cigarette amp," according to Piano. "Whether you hear our record or go to a show, we hope you feel like you belong to something," Christian concludes. "Maybe, it makes you feel better. The most important thing is you feel understood." My Kid Brother, have shared the video for the new song "Good News." "My friends always try to get me to go out at night, but I never want to," says vocalist/guitarist Christian Neonakis. "One time, it made me feel bad enough that I wrote a song about it. Sometimes, I feel like all my friends are cool and I'm such a fucking loser." My Kid Brother previously shared the video for "Aint That Cool." The band also premiered the video for "Daydream," which features a clandestine dance party, parrots, and dogs, at Alternative Press. Interview with AaRON

We had the pleasure of interviewing Simon Buret of AaRON over Zoom video! In the history of pop music, few have managed this. This awareness that artists need to keep challenging themselves. Experiment. Take chances. Reinvent themselves, never settling into a lazy, tawdry routine. A few examples immediately spring to mind : The Human League, who at the turn of the 1980s ditched their electronic experiments in favour of a highly compelling blend of electro-pop. Nick Cave left behind his early dismantled punk rock style and turned into a timeless crooner, while on Joy Division's mortal remains, New Order dreamed up an icy, unremitting version of disco, a thinking man's dance machine. Yes, reinventing yourself. A challenge for some, a vital necessity for others. A second nature… Overnight success, popular as well as critical acclaim, recognition both in France and, very soon, abroad : logic would have dictated that AaRON merely stick to the same winning formula – acoustic-oriented songs with a few variations here and there - and quietly drift away. And end up shipwrecked ? Maybe. Probably. But we'll never know. For Simon Buret and Olivier Coursier, whose peerless kinship is intact nearly a decade after their initial meeting, decided to wipe the slate clean. Make a fresh start. More or less. Anatomy of light lays its cards on the table. Observing, arguing, laughing, listening to noises, conversations, and silences too. Settling down - on a bench, in a bar -, then setting off again. Never worrying how their "journey" might end. These ten songs could form the fantasy soundtrack for these adventures. One where electronics reign supreme, vintage synths lay on top of drum machines from another century and classical arrangements are combined with retro-futuristic accents. An intermingling of uncertainties, addiction(s), obsessions and beliefs. With the golden age of a certain idea of pop in mind, yet with their eyes clearly set on the future, This is music which lifts the veil of intimacy, but never in an intrusive way, and seems able to turn darkness into bright shining lights. It is a celebration – one which will make your nights more beautiful than your days. AaRON's new album Anatomy of Light lays its cards on the table. Observing arguments and laughter all the while honing in on ambient noise, conversations and moments of silence. Today, the acclaimed French duo have released their irresistible new single "Ultrarêve" alongside a cinematic video featuring global superstar Jean-Claude Van Damme. The band received an email from Jean-Claude Van Damme himself (17.5M Facebook, 5M Instagram) who expressed being a fan and inquired about collaborating on his forthcoming feature film project. This led to a conversation about the band's new album and the birth of a friendship. "Jean-Claude came back to us to tell us how much this song meant to him. He offered to film the video himself in Los Angeles in an unprecedented setting, calling on his daughter Bianca to direct. The "(ultra) dream has become the (ultra) reality"." Having developed a massive global following, AaRON also found a fan in beloved actor John Malkovich who starred in the duo's 2015 "Blouson Noir" video. Composed in the burning desert of Nevada, in Paris and on the Greek islands, the 10-song collection is a fantasy adventure soundtrack. Interview with Hua Li

We had the pleasure of interviewing Hua Li over Zoom video! Hua Li's hazy R&B and revolutionary rap cuts to the bone and shakes your frail ass to the ground. She released her debut full-length, Dynasty, with Next Door Records in September 2019. Subversive and sexy, Hua Li is the only half-Chinese, half-militant, half-rapper of your heart. Interview with Nikki Jumper

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nikki Jumper over Zoom audio! Toronto, ON singer, songwriter, and sonic insurgent Nikki Jumper unveils her new single "Apocalypse Love." Teetering on the brink between rock and pop, she delivers an instantly catchy end-of-the-world anthem punctuated by hypnotic delivery, a danceable groove, and a hard-hitting hook, "Let's blow this shit up tonight." The song was co-written alongside Francesco Yates and features production from Phil Gornell [Bring Me The Horizon, All Time Low]. Be on the lookout for the premiere of a cinematic music video to accompany it very soon. About the song, she comments, "We were talking about what was going on in the world and how the apocalypse could happen, because everything is so crazy. Around the same time, my best friend survived a terrorist attack where there was someone shooting at the patios of a family neighborhood in Toronto. She called me screaming and crying while it happened. My brother was in Brussels during the city's terrorist attacks. He avoided the bombs by hours in the locations he was at. I had this feeling in my gut he needed to come home. Thankfully, he made it out. Francesco and I always say, 'If the apocalypse happens, you're the one I want to spend it with.' Ultimately, 'Apocalypse Love' is about finding love and magic within yourself, a lover, or friends, when the whole world is falling apart. Finding that love and magic makes everything a little better." "Apocalypse Love" heralds the arrival of Nikki's independent debut EP—coming very soon. The project manifests her pure and personal vision through and through from the music to the artwork, videos, and presentation. Stay tuned for its release later this year. Interview with Brie Howard Darling

We had the pleasure of interviewing Brie Howards Darling over Zoom video! The Runaways front-woman and solo artist Cherie Currie and Fanny drummer and singer Brie Darling were '70s icons who got the headlines. But they didn't always get the credit they deserved as strong women holding their own and forging new ground in a rock & roll playing field then dominated by old-school masculine mores. While Currie and Darling had a mutual admiration society, the two didn't meet until 2017, when Darling reached out to Currie to contribute vocals to Fanny Walked the Earth, a reunion album from the trailblazing Fanny, the first all-female band signed to a major label (Reprise) in 1969. Now fierce friends and cool collaborators, they're singing together on the new album, The Motivator, a 12-song album featuring nine classic covers by bands including T. Rex, The Rolling Stones, Buffalo Springfield, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, plus three powerful new originals, including the tough rocker "Too Bruised" and the topical "This Is Our Time". The tour is set for late 2019. The two Californians, who grew up with similar influences and worked tirelessly to overcome similar obstacles in their pioneering all-women groups, vibed quickly. "It was truly collaboration," says Currie, who actually was ready to leave the music biz after years of grueling touring. "With us, there's no ego, no push-pull. I don't stand for that. I grew up with it, and I'm fed up with it. I'm into lifting people up, not putting people down." The covers chosen mostly share—unintentionally—a socio-political resonance that's as relevant today as when the songs were written. Whittling down the selections from a huge group of favorites, the songs chose their singers. "Lennon's 'Gimme Some Truth' was not one I was screaming for until I heard Brie's scratch vocal on it; and I said, 'That's it. That's done,'" says Currie. Darling, likewise came to love it: "At first, the song seemed so one-sided, so kind of fed up, angry. But as I sang it, with its intensity, especially with what's going on in the country today, I got it, and loved singing it." The poignant take on the Hollies version of "He Ain't Heavy" was one Cherie brought to the table plus she wrote a poetic addition, "a beautiful counterpoint piece that we used as a background part." "The original album concept was that Brie was going to sing a few, I'd sing a few, and we'd back each other up," furthers Currie. "But I knew our voices really work well together. On T. Rex's 'The Motivator,' Brie did a great soulful rock scratch vocal but maybe I have more of a tough rock quality to my voice, so I think Dave decided I was going to sing it. But in my head I heard a duet, me doing the first verse, her on the second verse….and that started the dialog of using our voices together as a concept. Our voices complement each other, so we decided we should share the majority of these songs, because it makes them better." While there's at least one female musician on every song, with Darling playing drums on nearly all the cuts, everyone had to earn their place. "We don't wanna use women musicians just because they're women," says Darling. "I don't think that helps the women's cause. You have to be good at what you do. To make it in this really hard business, be the best one in the room. Earn it, just like anybody." If the covers resonated lyrically, so too do the originals. "I feel strongly about what's going on with women," Darling states. "So the song 'This is Our Time' is not only about what's going on with women, but it's also what's going on with Cherie and me. Both of us having been in these girl groups who never really got their day in the sun. I'm not bitter about it, but this song is very intentional on my part. I said, 'listen—this is about women. This is about you and me. This is our time, so let's take it.'" Interview with Kiiara

We had the pleasure of interviewing Kiiara over Zoom video! Atlantic Records recording artist Kiiara has just released her debut album, lil kiiwi. lil kiiwi boasts high-profile collaborations with acclaimed artists such as blackbear, on the standout track "So Sick," DeathbyRomy, PVRIS and more. DeathbyRomy and PVRIS)," "I Still Do" and "Never Let You" as well as Kiiara's hit singles "Whippin (Feat. Felix Snow)," "Feels" and the 3x Platinum smash hit "Gold." "I made a lot of mistakes and thru the process of making this album I learned from a lot of those mistakes," Kiiara shared. "I learned not to take love for granted, I learned to love, I learned not to push away the people who genuinely care about me. I took all the defeats I've faced over these past few years and put what I learned together like a puzzle. I picked myself up off the ground with the help of my family, friends, my team, and strangers who quickly became really important people in my life who I now look to for advice, all while I didn't see the light in anything. Lil kiiwi is who I was early in my career. Lil kiiwi is a savage who, no matter how hard I try to control and hide, will always be a part of me" Kiiara's recent releases have increased the widespread anticipation for her debut album, with Billboard labeling "I Still Do" as "a tight, melodic first taste" and LADYGUNN predicting the album to be "one for the top charts." The album title was teased in the "I Still Do" official video which introduced Lil Kiiwi, representing Kiiara in the earlier chapter of her career. In the video, flashbacks of Lil Kiiwi are intertwined with Kiiara's present life, embodying the idea that while Kiiara is more composed and authentic today, she will always have a Lil Kiiwi side to her.
