Interview with Malik

We had the pleasure of interviewing Malik over Zoom video! Malik is a 24-year old GRAMMY-winning producer & artist. He has worked with Ariana Grande, Earthgang, and JID and recently released his debut project SPECTRUM (Demo), through ARTium Recordings, the label run by his mentor, No I.D. Malik has assembled the colors of the spectrum - and he has turned them into his own personal sonic playground to give us some of 2020's best indie hip-hop and R&B. Spectrum (Demo), the debut full-length project by the GRAMMY-winning Austin, TX producer (Ariana Grande, JID, Earthgang) and artist, is officially out today through ARTium Recordings, the label run by Malik's mentor, the legendary No. I.D. The record is an exploration of a lifetime, through the colors that we see everyday: "Red" (healthy anger), Orange (The hopeful morning after), "Green" (hectic with something to prove), "Blue" (quiet and meditative), "Indigo" (Blade Runner swagger), and more. As we all have different shades, Spectrum (Demo) celebrates all the different, sometimes contradictory colors that reflect our lives, and making it all sound like, in Malik's own words, a musical take on Pixar's Inside Out if it were as heavily influenced by Outkast, Graduation-era Kanye West, Days Before Rodeo-era Travis Scott, Acid Rap Chance the Rapper, and Nostalgia, Ultra Frank Ocean. LISTEN TO SPECTRUM (DEMO): https://malik.ffm.to/spectrum Malik is not done yet this year; stay tuned for new music soon. We want to hear from you! Interview with Belle Mt.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Belle Mt. over Zoom video! Today, the buzzing London-based alt-pop project Belle Mt., fronted by songwriter/frontman Matt Belmont—shares a new version of their acclaimed single "Hollow" via Bee & El Records/Warner Records. "Hollow" has taken on a life of its own since its independent release as "Hollow – Acoustic." Thus far, it has gathered over 30 million total streams and counting. On the track, an acoustic guitar accompanies a stirring solo vocal before subtle keys and minimal orchestration echo. What begins as a pensive melody slowly builds into a sweeping refrain carried by Matt's emotionally powerful delivery. "'Hollow' is about love, loss, rebirth, and everything in between," says Matt. "Like great artists that leave us too soon, some of the love stories that aren't fated to last are remembered with their own timeless beauty and eternal youth. This one was inspired by the beginnings of a relationship that could have gone either way, neither of us were prepared for the weight of it or for the depths that needed to be reached in order to confront our demons and heal together. They say that if you come to fame without knowing yourself then the fame will define you and consume you, the same can apply to love." Click here to stream "Hollow" and here to view & share the original video About Bell Mt.: As Matt Belmont explains, "Belle Mt. is an ever-evolving concept that can take on many forms." It can manifest —at times— as Matt performing his most intimate songs solo on guitar or keys & vocals. In its current incarnation, Belle Mt. mostly performs as a trio comprised of Matt alongside long term collaborators Chris Burgess on drums/percussion and Ben Worsley on guitar, bass & backing vocals. Belle Mt. first emerged at the end of 2017 with the debut EP, 'Volume I' as "Hollow (Acoustic)" claimed real estate on coveted playlists such as Spotify's "New Music Friday," the group performed at SXSW, British Summertime in Hyde Park, Eurosonic, and on the road with Kaleo. After amassing multi-millions of streams globally, Belle Mt. inked a contract with Warner Records in 2020. Matt Belmont's emotive songwriting, heartfelt vocals, keys and acoustic guitar and has been captivating audiences worldwide. Belle Mt. makes its formal introduction now. More music to follow soon. Interview with The Struts (Part 2)

We had the pleasure of interviewing Luke Spiller of The Struts over Zoom video! The third full-length from British rock band The Struts, Strange Days came to life over the course of a charmed and frenzied burst of creativity last spring. After getting tested for COVID-19, singer Luke Spiller, guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott, and drummer Gethin Davies all moved into the Los Angeles home of Jon Levine, a producer who worked extensively on their acclaimed sophomore effort YOUNG & DANGEROUS (including the album's chart-climbing lead single "Body Talks"). Within just ten days of couch-crashing at Levine's house, The Struts had laid down nine original tracks and one masterful cover of a KISS B-side: a lean, mean body of work that amounts to their most glorious output to date. In an organic turn of events for a band massively embraced by some of rock-and-roll history's greatest icons—a feat that's included opening for The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Guns N' Roses—Strange Days finds The Struts joining forces with a formidable lineup of guest musicians: Def Leppard's Joe Elliott and Phil Collen, Albert Hammond Jr. of The Strokes, Tom Morello, and Robbie Williams. Mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer (Panic! At the Disco, Arctic Monkeys, Johnny Marr), the result is a powerhouse album that lifts The Struts' glammed-up breed of modern rock to entirely new and wildly thrilling heights. Despite its prescient title, "Strange Days" took shape from a voice memo Spiller recorded on the band's tour bus way back in summer 2019. Fused with a cabaret-inspired interlude Spiller had recently dreamed up, the song ultimately evolved into the perfect vessel for the frontman's force-of-nature voice: a tenderhearted epic that offers incredible solace in the most chaotic of times. As Spiller reveals, the making of Strange Days was a period of joyful productivity. "Every day I'd wake up at about 7 a.m., get three venti Americanos delivered to the house, go out to the backyard and smoke a couple of spliffs, and listen to the voice memos I'd recorded at the sessions the day before," he recalls. "After the first four days or so we hit a bit of a wall, so we decided to get some beers in and just stay in the pool all day—and the day after that we knocked out three whole songs." Throughout Strange Days, that kinetic energy manifests in the album's unbridled spirit, an element that makes every track exhilarating. "I think because we'd wanted to make an album this way for years, all that excitement and hunger led to an immediate sort of magic once we started working on it," says Spiller. "It was undoubtedly a magical ten days for us—and I hope when people hear the album, it gives them a taste of that magic too." We want to hear from you! Interview with Henry Hall

We had the pleasure of interviewing Henry Hall over Zoom video! Henry Hall is thrilled to announce his debut album, Neato. Produced by Hall and Dylan Bostick of Heavy Duty (Ariel Rechtshaid's company - producer for Vampire Weekend, Haim, more) in Los Angeles, Neato follows 2019's Questions, Comments Concerns EP, which Paper Magazine called "an event that you, for once, do not want to miss." The album's first single -- a tongue-in-cheek ode to romantic desperation called "Guy" -- can be heard now. A video for the song, equally as witty and directed by Brad Hall, is available today as well. Click HERE to listen to "Guy" Click HERE to watch Henry never touch dry land in the "Guy" video courtesy of Flood Magazine Hall creates one-of-a-kind alt-pop, wry like Ben Folds Five but tender like The Smiths, and as melodic as both of these qualifiers. Featuring his captivating falsetto paired with his amusing, idiosyncratic lyrics, Hall's music is self-deprecating and soulful. Underneath Hall's humorous language and moving melodies are alluring guitar and synthesizer textures, which complement his infectious vocal harmonies in a way that evokes Grizzly Bear and Mac DeMarco. After graduating from Wesleyan University in 2014, Hall moved to New York City to play live shows and craft My Friends Don't Like Me, his 2016 EP release. The project garnered attention online and eventually landed a placement on the Judd Apatow-produced Netflix series, Love. His subsequent single, "Talk," broke 1 million streams on Spotify in 2018 and soundtracked a Casey Neistat YouTube video that has over 10 million views. His next 2019 EP, Questions, Comments, Concerns, has a song featured on the final season of HBO's Veep. Neato is a culmination of his disturbingly funny and wildly catchy sonic terrain. Hall played the majority of the album's instruments, down to the drum programming. Each of the 13 tracks has a stickiness that creates a web of musical textures and lyrics that define and refine Hall's style up to this point in his career. It's a record that is equal parts funny, lonesome, overjoyed, annoyed as fuck, mired in the weight of indecision, and always, always, always melodically brilliant. The songs on the album run the gamut of all your emotions right alongside you — floating there, ready to be heard whenever you need them, just like a loyal made-up pal. We want to hear from you! Interview with MILCK

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing MILCK over Zoom video! For Los Angeles-based singer and multi-instrumentalist MILCK, music is a sanctuary. In her words, "Music is the one place where I can simply be me. When I'm singing my lyrics, I don't have to be feminine enough, strong enough, American enough, or Asian enough—I can just be a soul that yearns to feel free." MILCK's life took a 180 degree turn after a cell phone video of her performing her song "Quiet" with a choir of 25 strangers at the 2017 Women's March went viral. Soon it was being echoed and interpreted by groups around the world, from the US to Sweden to Ghana. "Quiet" was named Billboard's #1 protest song of the year and earned distinction as part of NPR's "American Anthem" series. And in 2018, it brought MILCK to the March's main stage in New York City, where she performed alongside the legendary Yoko Ono. Having "cemented her status as one of music's voices for the women's movement," MILCK just released, "Somebody's Beloved," a haunting and timely new song she wrote amidst protests for Black Lives Matter. Featuring MILCK's previous collaborator, Bipolar Sunshine as well as a diverse choir, the song will arrive alongside an equally poignant and moving music video, created in partnership with the TN-based non-profit, One Family Memphis. LISTEN/WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "SOMEBODY'S BELOVED" HERE (under embargo) "When Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Nina Pop, and George Floyd's murders sparked a global uprising, I faced the harsh reality that as an Asian American woman, I am both a beneficiary of white privilege, and victim of systemic racism. To understand how I could be a more active part of the US' healing from racial injustices, I started to do more research about systemic racism. As I researched Tamika Palmer and listened to her talk about the memory of her daughter, "Somebody's Beloved" started coming through me. "Somebody's Beloved" is a delicate yet powerful song that we hope can at least soften the vitriol that is prevalent in today's polarized culture." – MILCK MILCK first made waves with her global anthem "Quiet" which went viral at the inaugural Women's March, eventually becoming the sonic parallel to the #MeToo movement and being named Billboard's #1 protest song of the year. Given the current sociopolitical climate, "Somebody's Beloved" will surely resonate with everyone fighting for long overdue racial justice in America. We want to hear from you! Interview with Brian Cullman

We had the pleasure of interviewing Brian Cullman over Zoom video! Winter Clothes is the new summer record from Brian Cullman. Winter Clothes is Brian Cullman's most fully realized album to date, one with nothing to prove, just the easy camaraderie of first-rate musicians playing together, the snap crackle pop of the rhythm, and the smoky beauty of the songs. It's being released on September 11 by noted New Music label, Sunnyside Records. This is Cullman's first fully cooperative album with longtime friend and collaborator Jimi Zhivago (Glen Hansard, Ollabelle). Many of the songs were assembled during writing sessions where the two of them played ideas off one another, working through melodies and rhythms until the pieces were fully in sync. Tragically, Zhivago went into the hospital during recording of the project's final song. Brian visited him daily with the day's output and shared ideas and plans up until the day he passed away. The recordings were shelved for over a year before Cullman felt he could return to them. The album was mostly recorded live at Forrest Sound in Long Island City with the core lineup of Cullman (guitars, vocals); Zhivago (electric & acoustic guitars, organ, mandolin); Byron Isaacs (The Lumineers, Ollabelle) on bass, backing vocals and occasional drums; and Glenn Patscha (Ry Cooder, Ollabelle) on keyboards and backing vocals. Later sessions filled out the sound, adding Chris Bruce (Me'shell Ndegeocello, T Bone Burnett) on guitars; Christopher Heinz on drums; Tony Leone (Chris Robinson Brotherhood) on percussion; and Syd Straw (The Golden Palominos) and Mary Asque Fendley (Basque) on backing vocals. As always, Hector Castillo (Phillip Glass, David Bowie) was there to oversee the recording and to mix. We want to hear from you! Interview with Rob Mayes

We had the pleasure of interviewing Rob Mayes over Zoom audio! Rob Mayes is no stranger to the world of entertainment with careers in both Music and Film & TV. In a year marked by unprecedented cancellations and uncertainty, he has emerged a versatile, rising star in entertainment. Mayes not only has several acting projects on the horizon, but his work as an artist is earning him a name within the Country music community. Mayes released his third edition of a new four-part series, Songs From The Sofa: A Quarantine Project. In April, Mayes wrote and recorded the series of songs in his living room while in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. It features Mayes with a stripped-down sound as he sheds light on the ambiguity associated with the times, while still instilling the current climate with solace and hope. In addition to Songs From The Sofa: A Quarantine Project, Mayes has garnered industry attention with three other original releases, titled "What I Remember Most," "Don't Give Up On Me," and "Didn't Do This On My Own" (co-written with Earl Bud Lee, "Friends In Low Places"). Collectively, they have received strong support on Spotify, including on some of the platform's most popular Country music playlists, such as New Boots, Wild Country, Breakout Country, Next from Nashville and Fresh Finds. His music has also been featured on Apple Music's Hot Tracks and Tidal's New Tracks. In May, when an immeasurable amount of tours and shows were canceled, including the annual Stagecoach festival (an event frequently attended by Mayes), Mayes recognized that many artists were eager to share their music during the pandemic. He conceived the idea of doing a "Stagecouch" couch concert, and soon after organized CouchSongs, a virtual Country music concert, in partnership with Destination Country that provided an opportunity for artists to be supported through donations. Forbes recognized Mayes' virtual event, which featured performances by Craig Campbell, Desmond Child, Willie Jones, Cory Marks, Jamie O'Neal, Wood Newton, Gretchen Peters, Tyler Rich, Lainey Wilson, and so many others, here. As an established actor, Mayes looks forward to continued musical growth. On Sept. 25, he will release "Length of A Song," a track written by Mayes and Heath Owen (son of Randy Owen, Alabama). As an actor, fans recognize Mayes as a staple on ABC's "Mistresses." He also starred in the cult classic "John Dies at the End" with Paul Giamatti, which premiered at The Sundance Film Festival, along with SXSW, Sitges Film Festival, and The Toronto Film Festival. Most recently, he stars in the newly released Civil War Western, "A Soldier's Revenge," in which he appears alongside Val Kilmer, AnnaLynne McCord, and Jake Busey. "A Soldier's Revenge" is now available here, and the trailer for the movie can be viewed here. Fans can also expect to see Mayes this holiday season in Lifetime's forthcoming Christmas Edition, in which he stars alongside Grammy award-winning Carly Hughes and Marie Osmond. Some of Mayes other acting credits include Lifetime's "The Road Home for Christmas" with Marla Sokoloff and Marie Osmond, Lifetime's "The Client List" with Jennifer Love Hewitt, and CW's "Frequency" and "90210." Other film credits include "Deep Blue Sea 2," "Thor: Ragnarok," "Ice Castles," "Burning Blue," "Different Flowers," "Eden," "The American Mall" opposite Nina Dobrev, "Melvin Smarty," "Dangerous Matrimony," "My Christmas Inn" opposite Tia Mowry, "Love for Christmas," "Maybe I'm Fine," "He's Out To Get You" with Samaire Armstrong, "NYC Underground," FOX's "Proven Innocent," and the forthcoming thriller "The Stay." Interview with NOT A TOY

We had the pleasure of interviewing NOT A TOY over Zoom video! NOT A TOY can't be classified as simply a band. Rather, they are a collective of four creatives — Branson Hoog [lead vocals], Jeremy Marmor [guitar], Benji Spoliansky [drums], and TJ Wessel [violin, keys]. "NOT A TOY is not just a band; it's a lifestyle of art and creation," says Hoog. "We're not the first to combine different genres of music, but we're also blending other artforms — from streetwear to art shows. We're a snapshot of this generation's tattooed youth and bedroom beatmakers. We're just creating, and there are no rules to creation." Bio: Forget what you think you know. Not a Toy is NOT a band. It is a collective of four creatives, Branson Hoog [lead vocals], Jeremy Marmor [guitar], Benji Spoliansky [drums], and TJ Wessel [violin, keys]. Not a Toy does NOT fit into a genre. Rather, the quartet crafts whatever it wants and goes where the music takes them. Not a Toy does NOT just make music. These four creatives also make their own clothes, artwork, and videos. Not a Toy is NOT playing around. No, they have big and bold ambitions on their 2020 Fearless Records debut EP. This is NOT A TOY. "Not a Toy is not just a band; it's a lifestyle of art and creation," affirms Branson. "We're not the first to combine different genres of music, but we're also actually blending other artforms—from streetwear to art shows. We're a snapshot of this generation's tattooed youth and bedroom beatmakers. We're just creating, and there are no rules to creation." The members of this collective initially met in high school and cut their teeth in various projects together before launching Not a Toy in 2020. Operating out of a shared house in Denver, the group's synergy results from the sum of its parts. Classically trained and on the violin from a young age, TJ additionally plays a slew of other instruments, adding a variety of textures and production to the sound. Jeremy not only rips on guitar, but he also "makes trap beats so quickly it's ridiculous." Benji holds down the groove as the drummer and acts as an "overarching producer." Meanwhile, Branson pens the majority of the lyrics and plays guitar and piano. Based on a background in graphic design and painting, he "brings the art to the project." If Kanye West and Pharrell joined forces to produce a rock group co-fronted by Jesse Rutherford and Lana Del Rey, it might sound something like Not a Toy. "We complement each other like Yin and yang," adds Benji. "The four of us are so passionate about writing music. We all add different ingredients." They introduce this signature style on their first single "J Cash." Acoustic guitar, kick, and snare conjure a dusty twang from the onset before the momentum swings towards electric distortion and an 808 boom. "We were in this dingy basement, and we just found out we were getting signed to Fearless," recalls Branson. "So, the lyrics are super true, but they're also projecting where we're going. It's a bit of a cocky song. We felt like we had 'made it,' even though we were still in the basement," he laughs. "We really tried to keep everything as minimal as possible with most of this one," states TJ. "It starts off with that acoustic southern grit, but then it really sits back, and this piano comes in that feels equal parts hip-hop and western saloon." On the other end of the spectrum, the follow-up single "Quit Quitting" simmers with a dreamy California vibe. Over ethereal synths and D.I.Y. beatcraft, Branson probes, "Do you really want to know what the future has in store?" "It's the insecure side of the changes going on in our lives right now," Branson continues. "The whole song is asking questions. The answer is, it's all about the journey and the grind from where we started." In the end, this is NOT what anyone expected, but might be precisely what they need… "We'd love for the music to resonate," Branson leaves off. "We're dissecting all corners of human emotion. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/
