Interview with JAWNY
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing JAWNY over Zoom video! Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist JAWNY (fka Johnny Utah) released project/EP For Abby via Interscope Records. This records displays the same outrageous charm JAWNY has previously brought to viral hits like his acclaimed 2019 single "Honeypie." Hailed as a "slacker-funk gem" by DIY Mag, "Honeypie" has seen a major resurgence recently, with its video surpassing 12.3 million views on YouTube. In addition, "Honeypie" has now amassed over 67 million streams on Spotify. JAWNY is the alternative, love-pop brainchild of 23-year-old multi-instrumentalist Jacob Sullenger. At age 13, he began making beats with his brother, eventually landing placements with several rappers in the SoundCloud scene of the late-aughts. By 2017 he'd gained a cult-like following thanks in part to a series of viral videos posted on Twitter, and drew further buzz in 2018 with a self-titled debut EP made under the name Johnny Utah. In 2019, he broadened his fanbase with widely praised singles like "Honeypie" and "4Tounce." We want to hear from you! Interview with Niiko x SWAE
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Niiko x SWAE over Zoom video! The best of house/future house is yet to come, with Niiko x SWAE at the subgenres' richly hued helm. Residing in the lush LA musical landscape, the DJ/producer duo materialized in 2017, equipped with "Run This Town," charting at No. 16 on the Billboard Dance Club radar—a relatively unheard of feat for an embryonic EDM act. The melodic number spellbound the streaming circuit, garnering well over a million plays on Spotify alone in just months' time. In addition to their release repertoire, rarely does an act as nascent as Niiko x SWAE boast such an acclaimed touring arsenal. These "Keep On Calling" creators have laid claim to ravenously in-demand residencies with both HAKKASAN Las Vegas and OMNIA San Diego. Breakaway 2018 and Coachella 2019 co-conspirators, Niiko x SWAE have also lent stage support to some of the most potent superpowers in the dance music domain, including Marshmello, Kaskade, and Zedd, among others. The duo started the year off with "The Answer", an official release on Proximity, which quickly amassed several hundred thousand cross platform streams. With editorial support from Spotify's Friday Cratediggers and Apple Music's New In Dance as well as Radio and Mix Show support from the likes of Jauz, Allison Wonderland, Cheat Codes and more. Interview with Kulick
Together with American Song, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kulick over Zoom video! PA alternative rock singer/songwriter Kulick (who recently accumulated over 3 million combined streams on Spotify), has dropped "Rope," the ultra catchy first single off his debut full-length "Yelling in a Quiet Neighborhood," out now on ENCI Records. Originally from West Penn, PA, Jacob Kulick who now goes solely by his surname, turned his tiny closet into his own private music studio at age 12 and began writing and recording songs as a way to cope with his anxiety and the loneliness of being an outcast. "Middle school was a tough time—I went through a lot of disassociation and bullying, like a lot of people do when they're different in a small town," says the 28-year-old singer/songwriter. Kulick co-founded a high school band Story of Another, self-produced his own album and went on to study audio engineering at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. He got a job with CBS Radio in New York City as an engineer and crossed paths with a fellow musician who had a connection at RCA Records. Once he'd landed an introductory meeting with the label, Kulick devoted the next two years to building up his solo material and collaborating with other writers. In summer 2017, those two years of intense creativity led to Kulick signing a deal with RCA/Gold'n Retriever Records. With the release of his debut full-length titled "Yelling in a Quiet Neighborhood," out on ENCI Records, the Southern California label recently launched by industry veteran Pat Magnarella (longtime manager of Goo Goo Dolls), Kulick continues to showcase his rare ability to turn everyday pain into music that's undeniably life-affirming. With the album's recurring themes of Uncertainty, Guilt, Sadness, Shame, Love, Remorse, and Closure, Kulick explains, "It is the record where I learned the most about who I am and how much of that reality I was avoiding. This record is me. You know how nice it is to really feel like that? It's incredible! I love the 'Hydroplane' EP, but I didn't feel like it was entirely me. I wanted to be more hands on with making the music, producing it, and engineering my songs. On this record I was allowed that, thanks to my new label ENCI and my managers Pat Magnarella and Steve Masi. I wrote this record for most of the year, and got to produce the songs with Chris Szczech in LA. I was able to record live drums in Capitol Records and track all of my own vocals and instruments. So it was a completely different process and I enjoyed every moment creating it. It was my therapy like it always is, but in the most trying time of my life." Kulick's looking forward to getting back out on the road, armed with the lessons he learned during the making of the new record. We want to hear from you! Interview with Austin Ward
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Austin Ward over Zoom video! Singer/songwriter Austin Ward makes the kind of music that's easy to get lost in, a shapeshifting sound deeply informed by his eclectic and colorful upbringing. Growing up in Los Angeles, the 26-year-old multi-instrumentalist cut his teeth playing famed clubs like Whisky a Go Go at age 13, and spent much of his childhood on his family's plot of farmland in their Mississippi hometown—an experience that's proven infinitely formative on his vibrant guitar work, thanks to his longtime fascination with local legends like Albert King. After devoting years to honing his voice as musician—and making his name as a boundary-pushing producer for the likes of G-Eazy, UMI, and Arlissa —Ward is now set to release Side A and Side B: a two-EP debut project revealing the incredible depth of his artistry. A powerful introduction to his sharply detailed storytelling and sonic imagination, Side A and Side B center on the prismatic musicality Ward began cultivating as a little kid. Mostly self-produced in his living room, his forthcoming debuts Side A and Side B—the titles a loving nod to classic vinyl sequencing—unfold with a beautifully nuanced sonic palette, encompassing lush acoustic textures, kinetic rhythms, and complex yet visceral guitar tones. Side A ranges from the radiant alt-pop of "Find the Feeling" to the expansive, urgent folk of "Big Technology" to the stripped-back reverie of "Run the Other Way." Meanwhile, "Let Me Go" merges potent beats and jagged guitar riffs to glorious effect, giving way to a thrillingly epic track about moving on from a fast-fading relationship. "If 'Side A' is about where I've been, then 'Side B' is about where I'm going,"" Ward notes. The 'Side B' EP will be released early 2021, I'll keep you in the loop if you'd be interested. "I hope these songs feel good to anyone sitting in the back of a car, staring out the window, reflecting on whatever they might be going through at the moment," says Ward. "It's not all calming, meditative music—a lot of the songs actually have these big explosive arcs built-in—but I hope that people can find their own story in them, and come away with some kind of catharsis." Interview with Nick Waterhouse
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Waterhouse over Zoom audio! LA-based singer-songwriter/producer Nick Waterhouse returns with a vibrant, psych-rock cover of "Pushing Too Hard" (The Seeds). Best known for his riffage rooted in rhythm & blues, jazz, and soul, Waterhouse delivers his signature nostalgic crush between soaring, raspy vocals and funky key solos on the new track. Recorded on a rainy day in Memphis, featured guest vocalists on the chorus include Memphis' own gospel killers The Sensational Barnes Bros. & Los Angeles treasure Little Willie G of Chicano-rock group, Thee Midniters. Discussing his drive behind the cover, Waterhouse shares, "['Pushing Too Hard']...it has become a bit of a holistic form of musical self-hypnosis over the years for me. What to do when circumstance has pushed you into the narrow valley of precarity? Well, you lay down... or you push back. Especially with a well worn (mistake not for blunt object, dear listener) and thereby well-loved and powerful talisman." Waterhouse emerged in the Southern California underground scene that yielded artists such as Ty Segall and Cold War Kids, recording his debut single in late 2010 at the Distillery Studio in Orange County. The resulting single "Some Place", was recorded, mixed, and mastered completely analog to lacquer, plated and hand-pressed. Throughout touring North America and Europe, Waterhouse has appeared at Primavera Sound Festival and shared stages with Ty Segall, The Strange Boys, White Fence, and most frequently, The Allah-Las. After signing to Innovative Leisure Records, he released his debut LP Time's All Gone and began collaborating frequently with The Allah-Las, with his production credits spanning their 2012 self-titled debut and 2014 follow-up Worship The Sun. Interview with EVAN GIIA
Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing EVAN GIIA over Zoom video! British producer Duskus' feel-good remix of EVAN GIIA's new single, "tiny life." Duskus, praised by EDM.com for his "ability to craft emotional and forward-thinking anthems," recently released his new EP, Rising. Listen to "tiny life" (Duskus Remix) HERE and view the visualizer HERE. Worldwide fitness phenomenon Peleton gave fans a first listen to the remix earlier today. GIIA will be joining the spin class, instructed by Emma Lovewell, at 5:00 PM EST today from Peleton's Madison Avenue showroom. During an Instagram Live with Lovewell at 6:00 PM EST today, GIIA will discuss the remix, "tiny life" and her previous career in fitness. GIIA will perform "tiny life" and sit down for an interview with artist/producer/songwriter Schyler O'Neal as part of the GRAMMY Museum's Spotlight Saturday series, which will be available for viewing on the GRAMMY Museum's website on November 28. "tiny life," which was heard in ESPN's college football campaign, proved to be the biggest launch of GIIA's career, amassing more first-week streams than the debuts of all her previous releases combined. In its premiere of "tiny life," LADYGUNN noted, "[GIIA] keeps on churning out hip hop hits ready to dominate radio." Read the interview HERE. View the official video for "tiny life" HERE. A classically trained opera singer, Giia's voice adds a distinctive touch to her electronic pop crossover sound. She made her recording debut on the MEMBA track "Heat of the Moment," featuring alongside Hoosh. The song was named Single of the Week by BBC Radio 1. Released by ODESZA'S Foreign Family Collective in 2018, GIIA's breakout single "WESTWORLD" and the accompanying music video propelled her to #1 on Hype Machine. Combined global streams of the song now exceed 20 million. Since the release of "WESTWORLD," GIIA has been in sessions with Hudson Mohawke, Georgia Ku, Nate Campany, Kyle Shearer, Chris Lyon, RITUAL, OjiVolta, Kate Morgan, CHVRCHES, What So Not, Matias Mora and Larzz. Earmilk observed, "EVAN GIIA is the gutsy, barnstorming pop singer making quite a splash with her unique sonic panache and kinetic live persona." Every EVAN GIIA song is a pure exchange of energy, powerful enough to lift the darkest mood. Classically trained as an opera singer, the Brooklyn-based artist brings both raw passion and precision to her vocal performance, endlessly heightening the impact of her sculpted approach to electronic pop. "I really want my music to get people out of their own heads," says GIIA. "It's a big theme in my live show too: being totally present in the room with me and letting the rest of the world melt away so you can move and dance and forgot about everything else for a while." Since breaking through with her hypnotic single "Westworld" (a #1 hit on Hype Machine, amassing millions of streams), GIIA has mesmerized audiences at major festivals like Coachella and shared stages with leading artists like ODESZA. With her most recent live experience including her first-ever headline tour and a run of dates with Louis The Child, she's now set to deliver a series of singles further showcasing her stunning vocals and self-possessed songwriting. Mostly recorded in her home studio with MEMBA—an up-and-coming production duo comprised of Will Curry and Ishaan Chaudhary (GIIA's fiancée)—GIIA's latest material includes songs like "Focus," a soulful yet infectious reminder to turn your attention to the things in life that matter most. After sketching the song on her bathroom floor—her former favorite writing spot—GIIA joined forces with MEMBA to transform "Focus" from stripped-back ballad to sprawling epic. Layered with stacked vocals and lush synth lines, the resulting track ultimately builds a beautiful tension between its ethereal textures and hard-hitting beats. Originally from outside Boston, she began training as an opera singer at the age of 7, eventually partic --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Cam
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Cam over Zoom video! "One second, let me just put a baby on a boob!" Camaron Ochs, or Cam professionally and to her friends, is at home at the start of 2020. The new decade not only brings her re-entry into music with a brand new album of her best ever work, but it welcomes Cam too as a first-time mother having just given birth over the holiday season. The 35-year-old has an old soul but a young heart and she has always approached her career and her artistry in the way only Cam knows how. Prolific and adored, Cam has had a tremendous start in the industry. She has co-written with Sam Smith for his album (the song also became the soundtrack for an exquisite Apple commercial) and toured with him around North America. She lent her writing voice to Miley Cyrus' Bangerz album and she opened for Harry Styles at the legendary Ryman in Nashville. Forget genres, there is a deeper through-line at work: individuals in pursuit of earnest self-awareness. And they continue supporting each other as both Smith and Styles have writing credit on Cam's new album. This commitment to her own truth has led to some of her proudest moments outside of her music (giving a TED talk, working in both the GRAMMY and ACM Diversity & Inclusion Task Force) and it's the reason for some of the most difficult moments as well. She took a stand in 2018 and asked to be separated from Sony Nashville, whose operations were not in line with her values. For that reason, it's been five years since her debut LP which came hot off the tail of Grammy, CMA & ACM nominated hit in 'Burning House' (still the best-selling country song by a female solo artist over the past 5 years) and two years since the release of global favorite 'Diane' – a modern-day 'Jolene'. It was a move that often jeopardizes an artist's career but the risk paid off. Now working solely with RCA, she bought herself some time, and with it, she refined songs, and her voice strengthened via multiple international tours. She hustled despite the stress of the situation. She didn't wait for someone to wave a magic wand. "The whole body of work is better for having gone through that crazy shit. That's life, right?" she says. The album is the one she wanted to make, how she wanted to make it. The songs were written in LA, Nashville and NYC over the past three years. She used the same collaborators in executive producers Tyler Johnson (Harry Styles, Sam Smith) and Grammy winner Jeff Bhasker (Kanye West, Bruno Mars), who she calls her fellow "tinkerers". The songs on the resulting LP The Otherside contain that kind of classic familiarity that means you only need to hear them once before they're rolling around in your head. The lead single 'Till There's Nothing Left' is a sexy power ballad that moves like an uptempo. It's an unashamed from-the-gut testament to giving your everything to your one true love. The Otherside is so titled because it contains songs and stories from the perspective of hindsight, once the dust has settled, and they're written from Cam's purest heart pangs. Cam writes openly about her gorgeous relationship with her husband ('Like A Movie', 'Classic'), and she also writes damningly about her own inability to get over lovers past ('Forgetting You When I'm Alone'), and about the messy endings of her friends' relationships ('What Goodbye Means'). It's about falling in love in those back seats, then falling out of it as the same cars drive away from you never to be seen again. It's novel to listen to an album with so many love songs while the world burns, but it's necessary. There's something about our big optimistic pursuit of romance that keeps us standing still. Cam's tales are so lovely they inspire hope for anyone who seeks something similar. "You do it your own way and you make sure it's visible so other people don't have to feel so alone in it," she says. Who needs normal when you --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

The razor-tongued rapper continues to make waves in the industry and is taking a stand in support of the BLM Movement with his latest single "Silence is Violence". Interview with Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! (C!NCC!) over Zoom video! French pop-punk group, Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! (C!NCC!), borrowed their name from the classic '80s film, The Goonies, formed in 2007 and soon captured an ardent fanbase in the US, UK, and Asia, thanks to their high-octane blend of anthemic pop-punk melodies and pummeling hardcore breakdowns. The team at Fearless Records took notice, signing the band and releasing their debut LP, Something for Nothing in 2011. Following an eventful year of touring – which included supporting slots with Miss May I, Attack Attack!, and Woe, Is Me, and a coveted spot on the Vans Warped Tour – the group went into the studio to record their follow-up with acclaimed metalcore producer Joey Sturgis (Punk Goes Pop series, Asking Alexandria, blessthefall). The resulting record, released in April 2013, was Pardon My French, featuring such fan-favorites as "Restart," "Taking Chances," and "Haters Gonna Hate." The album was not only a commercial success – debuting at No.15 on Billboard's Alternative Albums chart, and No.20 on Top Rock Albums – but also received a warm reception from critics. Alternative Press praised that Pardon My French "explodes with…confidence," adding that "it's an exhilarating stop-start ride." AllMusic touted the album's "slew of high-energy, fireworks-heavy stadium jams," while Sputnikmusic declared the album to be "one of the most enjoyable albums" of the year, adding that C!NCC! "deliver a rollicking good time." This success garnered the band multiple headlining tour opportunities, while a deluxe edition of Pardon My French was released just a few months later. In 2016, following their third, and most recent full-length, Get Lost, Find Yourself, the hard-working band decided to take some time away from the spotlight. Late last year, C!NCC! – which currently consists of vocalist Bertrand Poncet, guitarists Éric Poncet and Paul Wilson, bassist Mathias Rigal, and drummer Bastien Lafaye – announced their return, along with a slew of festival dates. While touring plans were put on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic, Bertrand made an appearance on Fearless Records' "Fearless at Home" live-stream in May, where he revealed that the band is working on new music – much to the delight of fans around the globe.
