Interview with Jason Chapin

Together with American Songwriter we had the pleasure of interviewing Jason Chapin over Zoom video! "Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did." — Ken Kragen, Harry Chapin's manager and co-creator of USA for Africa and Hands Across America The incredible life of Harry Chapin can be seen like never before in, Harry Chapin: When In Doubt, Do Something. This documentary, directed by Rick Korn and released by Greenwich Entertainment (Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President, Creem: America's Only Rock 'n' Roll Magazine, Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind), follows the renowned GRAMMY-nominated folk singer from childhood - spent under the shadow of his jazz drummer father - throughout his tragically short life and captures the up-and-down spirit of one of folk's great humanitarians. The film's theatrical release is set for October 16 on World Food Day — a fitting coincidence for a man who co-founded the influential hunger non-profit WhyHunger. Told through archival footages and new interviews, When In Doubt, Do Somethingexplores like never before the key moments in Chapin's life, including performing with his brothers and working on the Academy Award-nominated documentary Legendary Champions, to his solo success with hits like "Taxi," "W.O.L.D." and "Cat's In The Cradle" and his tireless philanthropic work, which included his efforts with WhyHunger and a seemingly endless run of benefit performances, all of which led to him being posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. This documentary paints a new picture of the singer-songwriter who used his fame as a launching point to help others and influence politics. It features testimonials from Chapin's family (including Tom Chapin and Steve Chapin), as well as peers including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Seeger, Kenny Rogers, Robert Lamm (Chicago), Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, Pat Benatar, Bob Geldof, Ken Kragen, longtime bassist John Wallace, and WhyHunger co-founder Bill Ayres. "Harry Chapin was one of the greatest storytellers of all time. He wanted to change the world. And he did." These words kick off the debut trailer of When In Doubt, Do Something: The Harry Chapin Story. Watch the trailer, which premiered this morning on Rolling Stone: https://bit.ly/32y9dHs A portion of proceeds from the film will go to both WhyHunger and The Harry Chapin Foundation. The film was produced by Korn, S.A. Baron, and Chapin's son, Jason Chapin. Harry Chapin sold over 16 million records, had 14 hit singles, and garnered two GRAMMY nominations. In 1977 he was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger. In 1986, he was posthumously awarded the GRAMMY President's Merit Award. He was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2011. About WhyHunger Founded in 1975 by the late Harry Chapin and radio DJ Bill Ayres, WhyHunger believes a world without hunger is possible. Interview with Juletta & Ishan

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Juletta & Ishan over Zoom video! Alternative R&B artists Juletta + Ishan's, "If I Never Hit Land", is a collaborative album inspired by real stories Juletta collected from 30 women she interviewed over the past two years in New York City. To accompany the release, Juletta & Ishan have created an interactive web experience that reveals the sounds and voices that inspired the project. Designed and built by Nicolet Schenck, the website features clips taken from the various women who Juletta interviewed when the project first began in the summer of 2018. These soundbites gave way to soundscapes as her and Ishan developed them into songs, and many of these early and informative loops, samples and snippets are on display, as well. Upon entering the site, visitors are greeted by a seemingly endless grid of these audio artifacts, which they are free to interact with and investigate at will. The site also includes writings from each of the artists on how the album and its singles were created. Raised in California before moving to Italy and then New York, Juletta met producer and DJ Ishan in 2018, when they released a folk-pop EP Wild Nature plus a string of singles under Juletta's name, gaining attention from the likes of FADER, PAPER, Milk, Office Magazine and beyond. As they continued to work together, their sound expanded to incorporate elements of hip hop, deep house and electronic music. Ishan explains the duo's dynamic: "The beauty of her voice and her openness to my experimentation allowed me to grapple with ideas that had possessed my mind as a producer, but that I'd never had the chance to fully explore: blending folk and house music, bringing something new to what the great musicians of the past have achieved, and manipulating voice to create a hybrid between human and machine." Produced and written entirely by the pair, If I Never Hit Land marries Ishan's driving, house-influenced production with Juletta's introspective songwriting. As Juletta says: "This album is my account and my experience of the memories, the tears shed, the echoing thoughts and the complexities from 30 interviews with women from the city. And within those stories is a story of my own." The music of Juletta and Ishan balances between intimacy and expanse. On their debut album If I Never Hit Land, the two New York City artists unearth new ground in their experimentation with sound and emotion. Produced and written entirely by the pair, the freewheeling and ethereal project is a tale of transformation at its core. We want to hear from you! Interview with Ben Chandler

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Chandler over Zoom video! Named one of Pigeons & Planes' 'Best New Artists – February 2020' Chandler's sound 'is a product of countless hours spent in a Pittsburgh bedroom as a teenager, fooling around on the guitar with no intention of recording anything…' In 2015 when he moved to Naples, FL from his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, Chandler met fellow Naples artist Dominic Fike at a party, among others in the local scene, and began spending his time producing for his new group of friends, including Fike's earlier demos and artists like Nate Traveller. Ben Chandler has since made a name for himself, bringing a refreshing perspective to the music scene with his unique sound. Chandler blends the musicality of his classic rock idols like The Beatles, The Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix with the DIY ethos of Tyler The Creator and Odd Future, and the effortlessly cool vibe of Omar Apollo and his close friends Dominic Fike and Contradash. "Red Line" follows Chandler's breakthrough EP, SWEET DREAMS, SWEET HEART. A collection of songs he worked on during quarantine, the EP has earned widespread acclaim from the likes of Lyrical Lemonade, which wrote, "Ben Chandler's music is best described as bedroom-made, radio-ready. His skills as a producer, a songwriter, a singer, and otherwise, far exceed what one would expect from an artist so early in their career, and yet, with releases like his latest – the SWEET DREAMS, SWEET HEART EP – Chandler continues to set the foundation for a long, fruitful presence in music." The EP was highlighted by standout track "Self Aware," which was joined by a homespun companion video filmed and directed by Chandler. Stay tuned for new music coming from Ben Chandler very soon! Interview with Ty Herndon

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ty Herndon over Zoom video! GRAMMY® nominated and Dove Award winning recording artist Ty Herndon released his new single, Orphans of God, a duet with Emmy and Tony award winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth, featuring award winning pianist and composer Paul Cardall on piano. The single will be featured on Herndon's upcoming Christmas album, Regifted, set for release on Friday, November 27. via BFD/The Orchard. "I've been wanting to record Orphans of God for quite some time, and I'm so honored and humbled that it came together with my friends Kristin Chenoweth and Paul Cardall during this very difficult time in the life of our nation. It's more important now than it has ever been before to remember that we are all created equally and that God loves us all just the same. I hope this song can be a beacon of hope to anyone who's feeling lost, overwhelmed, or suffering in any way," said Herndon. "To sing with Ty Herndon was a dream. But to sing a song with lyrics that we both believe was so special. I hope as you listen to the song you hear the words and they speak to your heart," said Chenoweth. "Ever since receiving a donor heart, it's been my life's work to use music to help heal the hearts of others, which is why I'm excited to join with my friends Ty Herndon and Kristin Chenoweth in echoing an important message through this song — a truth that there are no orphans of God. Everyone is welcome to my table and as a Christian, I believe to suggest otherwise undervalues God's sacrifice," said Cardall. Orphans of God was written by Joel Lindsey and Twila LaBar and originally recorded by contemporary Christian group Avalon. Former Avalon band members Melissa Greene and Michael Passons provide backing vocals on the updated track. "When we were writing Orphans of God, we talked about the fact that many experience the painful sting of rejection and feel as if they don't belong," said LaBar. "To say that there are no orphans of God is our way pf saying that everyone is loved, seen, and remembered," said Lindsey. Orphans of God will lead the track list for Herndon's upcoming Christmas Album, entitled Regifted. In addition to the new single, the album features a curated selection of Herndon's favorite tracks from his holiday catalogue. "It's been a tough year for so many of us, and I wanted to give my fans a little something special to cheer up this season," said Herndon, who is currently in the studio preparing an album of all new material for a 2021 release, his first since 2016's House On Fire. Born in Beirut to a Lebanese father and Ukrainian mother, Maro's multi-cultural background is a centerpiece of his artistry. Interview with Guardrail

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Guardrail over Zoom video! Self-described diet punk band Guardrail has signed to Richmond-based label Open Your Ears Records, and recently released their new EP Yikes. Additionally, the band have announced that they will be donating a portion of sales in support of the Milwaukee Freedom Fund: bit.ly/mkefreedomfund. "We're getting older. It sucks,"the band shares on the new EP."Is this really it? It feels like we're missing something. Rather than a bright future, we inherited a broken planet and a broken system. We keep waiting for it to get better, but will it ever get better?" Guardrail is a band from Chicago, IL consisting of Kevin Andrew (vocals), Ken Ugel (guitar), Alyssa Leassig (bass, vocals), and Doug Brand ( drums). The band initially began calling themselves"diet punk" as a joke, but eventually they started to own it. They're not exactly"punk" in the traditional sense, though it's their biggest influence. They're just here to sing happy songs about not-so-happy things, marinated in Jeppson's Malört and positive energy. We want to hear from you! Interview with Jodie Nicholson

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jodie Nicholson over Zoom video! Hotly-tipped British newcomer Jodie Nicholson releases her hypnotic new single 'Move' on Friday 18th September 2020. Produced remotely during lockdown by Tim Bran (London Grammar, Birdy, Halsey, Aurora), Move sees Jodie's ethereal vocals come to the fore amid a hypnotic and mesmerising soundscape. Bringing to mind the effortlessly cool electro-indie-pop leanings of The Japanese House, the sparse hushed vocals of Dodie and the haunting synth vibes of Grimes, Move is the perfect soundtrack to a chilled out late summer's night. "On the surface, its message is typical of a generic pop song, but as the track's evolved in its creation, Move has become a powerful symbol for taking a feeling and running with it. It's been an organic, impulse-driven song from the get-go and in many ways feels like an awakening" says Jodie. "I never thought that my first time working with a producer would be during a global pandemic. Working remotely with Tim was fascinating. As I recorded vocals, he controlled my computer from the other end of the country, and we streamed the audio from both sides so we could listen together in real-time. It was honestly mind-blowing. I feel very grateful for current technology and Tim's knowledge" adds Jodie. In a breakthrough 2020, Jodie has already picked up airplay from Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, BT TV Music and Amazing Radio, as well as numerous live sessions, BBC Sounds playlists and 'Track of the Week' accolades from BBC Music Introducing. With the support of respected tastemakers including Fresh on the Net, Maverick Magazine, Record of the Day, Alexrainbird, Mahogany & Sofar Sounds, Jodie has quickly emerged as one of the UK's most exciting new artists. Influenced by the likes of Daughter, Lucy Rose, Bombay Bicycle Club, Rae Morris, Pink Floyd and Laura Marling, Jodie isn't afraid to experiment, explore and enhance each song's raw foundations. Using songwriting to unravel a deeper understanding and sense of self, Jodie's songwriting sees wistful narratives, delicate melodies and emotive lyrics sit atop deep-rooted themes of melancholy and longing. Funded by Help Musicians UK's prestigious 'Do It Differently' Award, Move is the first in a series of new releases that Jodie Nicholson will be sharing over the coming months. Interview with Blame My Youth

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Blame My Youth over Zoom video! Blame My Youth is Sean Van Vleet – a name you might not be aware of, but unknowingly heard in your headphones, in a store or on a television. As a former principal songwriter in Chicago indie faves Empires, Van Vleet expanded into the world of songwriting and syncs, providing music for major artists and ads worldwide. Blame My Youth is Van Vleet's return to the band format, bringing all of the earworm-y grandiosity that permeated his quietly complicated pop gems. Blame My Youth - reveals a new song, "Dance With My Demons," his follow up to Blame My Youth's debut single "Fantastic." Teaming with Billboard's #1 producer Joey Moi and co-writer Greg Holden (who co-wrote the song) "Dance With My Demons" once again highlights Van Vleet's prowess for crafting endlessly catchy, hook-filled songs. He shares, "'Dance With My Demons' is a pub/barn burner for the pint raisers who choose to cheers their vices and reckless behaviors for a night, and shove their shames off into the future. This song celebrates a mindset where the bright side and dark side meet, and the party starts. The day I met my now extremely good friend and frequent collaborator Greg Holden, we were equally crashed out at the bottom of recent life highs. He had some heavy personal struggles as did I. We shared a guilty conscience we had about giving into vices and letting bad habits and thoughts get the best of us. Both of us grapple with loving and hating our demons. So we wrote this song where we allowed ourselves to be good with them for little while, accept them, maybe even warmly embrace them." A perfectly-crafted modern rock banger permeated by seductive pop hooks and sheer audacity, "Fantastic" was released this Fall and debuted on SiriusXM's Alt Nation. It has amassed upwards of 3 million streams and the video hit the top 10 rock and alternative charts at Vevo. It is the follow up to "Right Where You Belong," which was written and recorded exclusively for the soundtrack to Bill And Ted Face The Music - it played during the movie's closing credits - and marked the debut of Blame My Youth. Blame My Youth is Van Vleet's return to the band format, bringing all of the earworm-y grandiosity that permeated his quietly complicated pop gems. Sean Van Vleet first success came with Empires, a Chicago based indie band with several releases, an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman and festival appearances such as Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and more during tours with Death Cab for Cutie, Deerhunter, Alkaline Trio and others. After Empires called it quits in 2015, he connected with friend Josh Ocean (NVDES) to build an impenetrable musical bond that has seen their explosive "laptop punk" find its way into placements around the world including the likes of Samsung, Google and Apple iPhone advertisements. As Van Vleet was writing the first Blame My Youth songs he shared them with close friends including some of the people he worked with along the way - a crew mostly renowned for their time in Nashville - Big Loud's Seth England, Craig Wiseman and Moi. They have long wanted to collaborate and while Big Loud primarily work in the country music space, there was no denying that Blame My Youth was something special, and they quickly signed Sean to their new label imprint Big Loud Rock. "I met them all 10 years ago," recalls Van Vleet. "Not only are we really good friends, but I think we all knew that we would eventually work on something awesome together. It's just about the right timing." With Blame My Youth, Van Vleet is showcasing his overwhelmingly feel good approach with nods to Andrew WK's brazenly positive big bang and Post Malone's inescapable pop sensibility, all with touches of darkness and vulnerability throughout. It's music meant for maximum volume while recovering from a life on maximum volume, y --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/
