Interview with Hailey Knox

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Hailey Knox over Zoom video! In the past, Hailey Knox has been called a "music sensation" by People Magazine with a "preternaturally soulful voice" (Billboard) and the "ability to create a symphony of sounds with just her voice, a guitar and a looping pedal" (Earmilk). Her cunning songwriting (a combination of understated personal irreverence and "heart-on-her-sleeve" aching vulnerability) and beyond-proficient guitar/looping skills have found her transitioning from the category of viral web music breakout into a fully-formed artist. 2018's 'The Hardwired Mixtape' was a taste of the creative brilliance of Hailey Knox, and today she releases "a boy named pluto", a track that demonstrates a true artistic force evolving her songwriting and style, and pushing herself into musical territories not yet personally charted. Also out is a visual video retelling of the song via claymation, directed by Hailey and created by artist Claire Maske. Ones To Watch said if the track "is any indication of where Hailey Knox wants to take us musically, we're ready to go along for the ride." Out on S-Curve Records and written with Angelo Angelides, Knox wanted to take a detour from her traditional "pulled from my own journal" writing style, exploring a narrative based around two fictional characters experiencing a very real, relatable situation: the tentativeness and fear that comes from admitting your feelings for someone. With emotionally astute storytelling, a hypnotic dreamlike vocal delivery, and a noticeably more indie-soul leaning sonic landscape for the pop songstress, "a boy named pluto" is a glimpse into the boundless creative talents of a rising force in the singer/songwriter genre. Of the track, which she also co-produced, Hailey said "I wanted to make a song about two fictional characters. While writing, we really pulled from our imaginations and put ourselves in the shoes of Pluto and Genevieve, the characters we created. I feel like one idea leads to the next when I write - I rarely go in with a main concept. I often write from my own experiences but I wanted to try a different approach - writing a story about other people." Of the personal meaning this song holds for her, Hailey added "This song means a lot to me because it's the first song Angelo and I wrote together. We are both perfectionists so saying that this song has evolved is an understatement. From countless vocal takes, to spending hours just to find one word, it's fulfilling to see the song at its final stage." Hailey Knox has earned praise from the likes of Billboard, Teen Vogue, Paper Magazine, Mashable, People Magazine, and Seventeen, she has toured alongside Charlie Puth and AJR, and has performed on the Austin City Limits Festival stage as well as on NBC's TODAY. Hailey is currently also performing a weekly performance on BeApp every Tuesday night We want to hear from you! Interview with Dreamer Boy

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dreamer Boy over Zoom video! Capping off a year earmarked by critical acclaim and millions of streams, Dreamer Boy doles out more sonic bliss on his new single "Don't Be A Fool," out now via slowplay/Caroline: LISTEN HERE. On the track, a steady lo-fi beat slips into ethereal pedal steel guitar as his delicate timbre takes hold. It bridges the gap between bedroom pop heart and Nashville tradition. Stay tuned for the music video due out later this month. Regarding the single, Dreamer Boy a.k.a. Zach Taylor commented, "When I wrote this song, I was in love with someone who had no idea of my feelings. I was growing more and more frustrated with myself for my lack of initiative. I needed gumption. I needed to look at myself say, 'You've got this!' This song is sort of a conversation and an encouragement to anyone who has ever been in the same place. If you love someone, let them know. You never really know how much time you have with someone you love, and I think your love deserves to be free. We were really inspired by the likes of Neil Young, John Prine, Fleetwood Mac, and, more recently, our queen Kacey Musgraves. We were really into the idea of exploring more of the Nashville statement and adding our own twist. 'Don't Be a Fool' is embracing the Nashville sound, and hopefully turning it into something for the newer generation." It arrives on the heels of "Crybaby." After making its global debut as part of Apple Music 1 World First Premiere with Zane Lowe, it has already generated over one million streams and counting. In addition to plugs from coup de main and more, DIY Mag claimed the song "oozes cool with its R&B tinged lo-fi pop leanings," and Purple Sneakers wrote, "this bop feels gentle and relaxing with glimmering guitars and psych-infused elements." Dreamer Boy has been building his following organically, hitting the road with the likes of Clairo, Omar Apollo, The Marias, Still Woozy, and more since introducing his "cowboy pop" in 2018. PAPER Magazine wrote that "Know You" is "a track with mesmerizing synths and an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia that will have you chasing after the feeling of not knowing someone, but wanting to." Dreamer Boy's independent breakthrough, Love, Nostalgia, drew acclaim from Milk.xyz, Elevator Magazine, and OnesToWatch, who called it a "multi-dimensional narrative of summer romance and teenage dreams. A wavy time capsule that transports you from '90s MC-808s to the woozy dream pop of 2019." The album's follow-up single, "Puppy Dog," received praise from The FADER, and had Clash comparing its "blissful naivety" to Rex Orange County and its "choppy guitar" to Prince. The track has amassed 9.9 million streams and counting. Stay tuned for more to come from Dreamer Boy. We want to hear from you! Interview with Northcote

We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Goud of Northcote over Zoom video Canadian singer/songwriter Northcote (aka Matt Goud) is gearing up for his US debut this fall. But first, let us share a little more about this troubadour who sonically falls in line with Ruston Kelly and Lori McKenna: wistfully intimate vocals mixed with a rock n' roll poet's heart. Here are 4 things you need to know about Northcote: * Rock N' Roll Poet: he's heavily inspired by artists ranging from Lori McKenna to Strand of Oaks; he's a self-described "gentle giant singing poems and stories that shed light on personal growth, love, family, friendship and spirituality with steadfast energy and storytelling imagery." * A cappella religious singing to heavy metal: growing up in Carlyle, Saskatchewan (pop. 1500), Goud grew up wanting to star in musicals. He quickly dove into music, first taking up the piano, guitar and drums and joining the school band in his elementary and middle school years. He even joined a capable religion singing group and event sent out to perform with a Canadian heavy metal band for over 6 years. * Seminary drop-out turned mental health worker & touring troubadour: Dreams and reality quickly collided and when Goud graduated from his Christian boarding school he went on to ministry until dropping out at 21. Now — when he's not in the studio or on the road — he's a harm reduction and mental health worker in shelters and safe injection sites. * Self-acceptance, reconnection and intimacy: on his upcoming album, he delivers sonic patchwork of warmly crafted folk/Americana storytelling about self-acceptance, intimacy and liberating feeling of releasing yourself form guilt and shame, while seeking genuine and honest connection. Northcote is the performance moniker for Victoria-based singer and songwriter, Matthew Goud. A troubadour at heart, Goud has been writing songs and touring the world for most of his adult life. With three full-length projects, two EPs and over 500 shows performed globally alongside some of the heavyweights of his genre, Goud's is a familiar voice to many in the community. 2020 sees the latest iteration of Northcote, one that finds his signature raspy-sweet voice effortlessly laid over a beautifully blended landscape of folk and Americana. Drawing inspiration from two years of self-reflection and exploration, the forthcoming collection of songs, Let Me Roar (October 2020) are the most personal and affecting of his career to date. The first single "Dancers and Queens", leads the way in this regard. The song lauds those who Goud sees as having taken the less conventional path in life, a group of which he considers himself and some of those closest around him to be members. Of the song, Goud remarks. "I have wrestled with fear and guilt as I have grown into the person I am today. I have tried my best to be open to where my heart, mind and soul was leading me to in my life up to this point. The story and visuals of a youthful traveller resonates with me even now, since I am still on my journey to find more Dancing and to find that hidden gem that is a crown that fits only me." Subsequent singles, "Keep On Saying Goodbye", a song about real or imagined borders in a relationship, and "Nine To Midnight" which explores the sacrifices that parents make to provide for their families, continue this theme of personal yet relatable stories. This is something Northcote has endeavoured to capture in his songs throughout his career and has achieved in spades with this new batch of songs. If there is a hallmark to the new material beyond his distinguished voice, it's the stories he has been able to tell. With roots in mid-western Canada and having lived in over a dozen places during his time as Northcote, Goud has settled in Victoria, British Columbia with his wife where he does social work while not on the road. His outward dedication to the community, especially marginalized communities is commendable, and finds its --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Lowell

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Lowell over Zoom video! Lowell has experienced an entire career's worth of music industry ups-and-downs in an astonishingly short period of time. Her journey from dropping out of college and working as a stripper to finding her footing as the go-to songwriter for platinum selling pop stars will be fodder for an incredible book one day, but freshly earned double platinum ("Not A Love Song" by Bülow) and gold ("Selfish" by Madison Beer) certified plaques and a new solo album on the way, Lowell's in no rush to write her story. It's only just beginning. And if she's learned anything from the last decade, it's that when life hands you lemons… Los Angeles/Toronto based singer-songwriter Lowell recently released "Lemonade," a modern piano ballad that pulls as much inspiration from '70s singer-songwriters like Carole King and Randy Newman as it does Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey. The new stripped-back single about toxic positivity feels timeless, like it was pulled out of a collective memory, but with a big F-bomb in the hook and a prominent Migos-esque triplet flow in the pre-chorus, it couldn't be more contemporary. Pivoting from the pop world where she has found great success recently, Lowell chose to present these songs how they were written, in their most essential state and most simple essence. After leaving stripping and escaping a manipulative manager, Lowell was tapped by producer Martin Terefe to create her debut EP featuring collaborations with members of Coldplay, A-Ha and Mew. The EP caught the attention of indie label Arts & Crafts, who released her 2014 debut which prominently addressed her feminist politics and time spent as a sex worker. Critically adored, but commercially under-appreciated, she put her solo career on hold and moved to LA to focus on songwriting where she quickly began working with ascendent pop artists like Hailee Steinfeld, JoJo, Demi Lovato, Lennon Stella and Charlie Puth. Continuing her multidisciplinary artistic trajectory, Lowell co-wrote Bloodthirsty, a 2020 Canadian horror feature film about a young vegan indie singer, who finds herself turning into a werewolf under the pressure of recording her anticipated second album. The film features several new songs, including "Lemonade". It was accepted into Frontieres at Cannes and will premiere at both Fantastic Fest in Austin TX (the US's biggest genre fest) and Fantasia in Montreal (only 10 films accepted world wide). "Lemonade" is the first single from an album that's due in early 2021. We want to hear from you! Interview with Rence

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Rence over Zoom video! Genre-defying singer, songwriter, and producer Rence recently released his latest single "Strawberry Blonde"via Epic Records. "Strawberry Blonde" follows the release of previous singles "Sometimes Things Just Fall Apart" and "Tears In December," which have already racked up close to 2 million combined streams and received praise from the likes of tmrw Magazine, EARMILK, Euphoria and Lyrical Lemonade who called "Tears In December" "a song you NEED to listen to before the day is over." About the track, Rence commented, "Taken at face value the lyrics of 'Strawberry Blonde' tell a story about someone worried about everything – their past, the future, everything – their unsureness is taking a toll on the relationship, and signals aren't clear. To me, it's the secondary meaning that really rings true. As I sat with the song for a while, I realized that I was talking about myself thinking things too much. I assumed we're free of blame and worry, when really we're the ones freaking out." Rence continues to consistently deliver and affirm his status as one of the most exciting new artists to watch of 2020. His solo releases continue to shine with "hate u btw" clocking over 1 million streams as "Type 2" is about to cross the 2 million mark. Notably, Wonderland praised Rence in their feature of "Type 2" calling him, "one artist to keep an eye on very closely in 2020." Capitalizing on the momentum sparked by the release of his Fall 2019 EP, Rence has received much acclaim as Pigeons & Planes named him among "Best New Artists". Meanwhile, his breakout single "Expensive" [feat. Noah Cyrus] recently surpassed 8.2 million global streams. About Rence: Sharing real life snapshots in song, Rence magnifies his personal perspective through a genre-less palette, bordering pop, alternative, electro, indie and hip-hop all at once, yet never dipping into one for too long. He introduced himself on the breakthrough independent project, Pink. The lead single "Baby Blue" racking up nearly 10 million streams. Peers such as Lauv, Chelsea Cutler and FLETCHER lent support as critical acclaim came from Hilly Dilly, Lyrical Lemonade, Ones To Watch, Elevator Magazine, and more. Noah Cyrus] made waves and turned heads right out of the gate receiving looks from Nylon, Billboard, and Paper. The song now has over 8 million global streams, while the music video has amassed over 800K YouTube/VEVO views. Interview with Jordan Suaste

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jordan Suaste over Zoom video! Today, Jordan Suaste shares the bittersweet but beautifully feel-good video for his new single "Patience." An intimate look at unrequited love, "Patience" showcases the pure vulnerability and effortless charisma that audiences have come to expect from the 19-year-old singer/songwriter, who first made waves with his breakthrough hit "Body." Check out the video for "Patience" HERE. Directed by Brent Campanelli (an L.A.-based filmmaker/photographer known for his work with artists like Ashe), the video for "Patience" finds Suaste alone at a dinner table set for two, complete with lit candles and a vase full of red roses. Over the course of the R&B-laced and irresistibly catchy track, the video follows Suaste through a series of reflective moments: listening to vinyl with his headphones on, daydreaming in his bedroom, dancing poolside, gazing into the bathroom mirror and turning his toothbrush into a make-believe microphone. Although the video perfectly captures the lonesome mood at the heart of "Patience," Suaste infuses every shot with his radiant energy and endearing presence. Says Suaste, "'Patience' is about being over someone's bullshit. It's about feeling lonely, but instead of just sulking, it's a song about taking charge, setting boundaries and knowing when enough is enough and that's what I wanted the video to show. Of course there's a little bit of sadness, but for the most part the idea was to keep it kinda boppy and light hearted. I'm so excited to finally get to share it with everyone!" Wonderland says, "Patience" is "layered with smooth honeyed vocals and fresh charisma, the 19-year-old multi-instrumentalist draws us in instantly and weaves together a story of unrequited love and vulnerability." "Patience" is the latest deeply personal visual from Suaste, who premiered the official video for "Body" in September. A poignant meditation on empowerment and freedom, the "Body" video helped bring even greater success to Suaste's breakthrough hit — an early-2020 release that appeared on Spotify's Viral 50 charts in 22 countries (reaching #3 in the U.S. and #8 on the Global Viral 50 chart) and landed on major playlists like Spotify's Pop Rising and Apple Music's New in Pop. Suaste also earned acclaim from outlets like Idolator (who named him "one of 2020's most exciting newcomers") and Flaunt (who praised him for "inject[ing] honesty, vulnerability and authenticity into his lyrics…pairing his truths with smooth comforting vocals"). With the arrival of "Body" and "Hookup Culture," Suaste introduced a much-needed new voice into today's pop landscape. On the strength of those DIY-produced tracks, Suaste quickly amassed a global following drawn to his detailed honesty — an element that goes beyond surface-level vulnerability to reveal rarely-spoken truths about self-image and self-worth. Having penned his first song at the age of five, Suaste dropped out of school at 16 and soon started posting original songs on Instagram. As he honed his songwriting craft, he linked up with musician/pianist Jake Ostler and Ostler's friend Jaxon Garrick, a self-taught producer. Written by Suaste with production from Ostler and Garrick, "Hookup Culture" was released in May 2020 and immediately drew attention for its bittersweet takedown of toxicity in modern dating. Just two weeks later, he delivered "Body" and saw his audience grow exponentially — garnering over 50,000 YouTube subscribers in just over a month and surpassing 500K TikTok followers — as fans instantly adopted its message of renewed strength and resilience. Thanks to the unstoppable momentum of his first two singles (as well as the gorgeously sparse "Body (Acoustic)," released in July), Suaste has already built a devoted fanbase who've come to rely on their community as a uniquely safe space: a testament to his genuine open-heartedness, as well as his commitment to tot --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/
