Interview with August Burns Red

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing August Burns Red over Zoom video! Upholding artistic pillars of tightly wound technical proficiency, airtight grooves, and pensive lyricism, August Burns Red fulfill a quiet, yet staunch 17-year commitment to a diehard audience worldwide. The two-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated Pennsylvania quintet—JB Brubaker [lead guitar], Brent Rambler [rhythm guitar], Matt Greiner [drums], Jake Luhrs [lead vocals], and Dustin Davidson [bass]—have preserved this level of integrity since first emerging in 2003. Following the seminal Messengers [2007] and Constellations [2009], the band infiltrated the mainstream via 2015's Found In Far Away Places. Not only did the latter stand out as their second straight #9 bow on the Billboard Top 200, but it also garnered the group's first GRAMMY® Award nomination in the category of "Best Metal Performance" for "Identity." The momentum increased with the arrival of Phantom Anthem in 2017. Marking the group's fourth Top 20 debut on the Billboard Top 200, it paved the way for their second "Best Metal Performance" GRAMMY® nod for "Invisible Enemy." Between sold-out shows worldwide, they continued a 15-year tradition of holiday shows by launching the Christmas Burns Red Festival. Now, their 2020 eighth full-length, Guardians [Fearless Records], sees them not only preserve but perfect this definitive sound as evidenced by the likes of "Defender" and "Bones." Christmas Burns Red crushes your living room this year! ABRlivestream.com for tickets and exclusive merch! See you December 12th at 8PM EST! We want to hear from you! Interview with Donovan Woods

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Donovan Woods over Zoom video! A decade into his career and Donovan Woods' songwriting remains wholly invested in exploring the human condition as he mines small moments to find greater truths. Donovan Woods' new 'Without People' album is alive with intimacy and connection at a surreal time when we're all in desperate need of both. While created piece by piece from Woods' makeshift home recording studio and other musicians in isolation from their homes, so much of 'Without People''s allure and power is rooted in how Woods connects with his collaborators. Produced by James Bunton and vocal producer Todd Clark (Dua Lipa, Noah Kahan, Phillip Phillips), the album recruits a stellar array of co-writers including Ashley Monroe, Pruitt, Tucker Beathard and more. From the snippets of warm chatter and lush strings on the title track to the gossamer layers of harmonies on "Seeing Other People"; the aching loneliness of "Grew Apart" to the tenderness of love's redeeming grace on the evocative Katie Pruitt duet "She Waits For Me to Come Back Down," Woods captures sentiments about wanting to be alone — until you're suddenly lonely - and why we so often chase something we're never going to get. Each song is a reminder that relationships are what bind us, and what matters most is how we treat one another and whether we're truly listening and trying to understand experiences distinct from our own. "In the middle of a pandemic as the truth of our environmental devastation sinks in, in the thick of protests reshaping our thoughts on policing and crystallizing the reality of white supremacy at work in all corners of our society, it feels silly to write about relationships," says Woods. "But, what I discover time and time again is that my brain wants to fixate on and examine small moments that may have seemed inconsequential but have ended up shaping my sense of self. So, if we are coming to the end of something (and it feels like we are), I can say that I tried my hardest to write truthfully about the people I've loved and the things I did wrong, and add my little verse to the story of what it feels like to be a person, longing for connection, and then longing for solitude, and then longing for connection. All in all, I think the record sounds like the times it was made in: turbulent and lonesome." We want to hear from you! Interview with Veronica Fusaro

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Veronica Fusaro over Zoom video! We have all witnessed a challenging 2020 so far but we're pleased to introduce you to an exciting new singer songwriter in the form of Swiss / Italian soul pop Artist Veronica Fusaro ahead of her latest single Beach next month, marking the beginning of a series of new singles documenting, like postcards, Fusaro's journey towards her debut album. Hearing the word "beach", you may immediately think of a tropical destination sipping a cocktail in the sunshine whilst overlooking clear blue water, but not for Veronica Fusaro in this case. With her fine antenna for the nuances of emotions, she takes the beach as the metaphorical starting point for the weather report of a relationship entered not in the hope of genuine love but as a sweet distraction from humdrum everyday life. Fusaro writes authentic storytelling soul pop music with strong melodies and plenty of heart that has been captivating audiences across Europe. To date she has already racked up a combined 1.5 million streams and like Fusaro's previous music including her most recent EP release "Sunkissed" (2019), "Beach" was written and recorded as a demo in her studio in Thun, Switzerland and finishing off in London with collaborator Paul O'Duffy (Amy Winehouse, Dusty Springfield, Ian Dury and John Barry) who added the extra splashes of colour. The single is about wanting something but not being able to have it and therefore filling it with a temporary solution. Instead of facing your problem, in this case not being able to have the 'beach', you'll take a look around and forget about sorrows for the time being. The single also sees Fusaro heading towards a more organic instrumentation and taking inspiration music from her father's home country, Italy, using the idiosyncratic brand of 1950s jazz with mentions of the late big band singer, Fred Buscaglione, and the bittersweet party mood of Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita". After finding motivation from winning a national competition at 18 called "Demotape Clinic" at the m4music festival in Zurich she discovered this could be more than just a pipe dream and started devoting her life to music. In the four years since then, Fusaro has been busy evolving and building a fanbase, releasing music and since releasing her debut single 'Better If I Go' in 2017 she has gone on to play over 500 shows around the world including Glastonbury. She has also released further singles including summer ballad 'Hello Old Friend' and fun loving 'Rollercoaster' reaching 131K video views along with three EP's 'Lost In Thought', 'Ice Cold' and most recently the well received 'Sunkissed'. After only 4 years in the business she has demonstrated her ability to hold an audience of any size, be it in an intimate club or even Glastonbury festival, in the palm of her hand which has resulted in a steady forever growing online following of 7,573 monthly Spotify listeners, over 670,000 Youtube views and 5522 Instagram followers. With her debut album already in mind for a release of 2021/2022 you can be sure to hear more releases and hopefully live shows in the not too distant future. We want to hear from you! Interview with Sam Lynch

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Lynch over Zoom video! Sam Lynch is a Vancouver based singer-songwriter and musician, who makes wallflower hush-rock songs that will stare you down and slow your breathing. Her debut album "Little Disappearance" is out now via Birthday Cake. Since the release of her 2017 single "Mess You Made" and 2018 EP "Light and Lines", Lynch has been gathering a dedicated audience by way of her confessional songwriting and emotionally evocative live performances. After a busy couple years of domestic and international touring—opening for Andy Shauf, Noah Gunderson, Alice Phoebe-Lou, Mother Mother, and more—Lynch partnered with Montreal-based producer Samuel Woywitka to begin work on her first full-length studio record. Little Disappearance is Sam Lynch's debut studio album, released October 2020 on Winnipeg label Birthday Cake. Featuring the work of some of North America's most brilliant creatives—Dylan Phillips and Isaac Symonds (Half Moon Run), Leif Vollebekk, Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), amongst many others—the collection of songs paints a lush sonic landscape where self-reflective lyrics and cathartic musical flourishes collide. The album was written and recorded over the period of a year and a half, from both Lynch's basement home studio, and world-renowned studios in Montreal and Vancouver. The songs swell and recede, as percussive guitar, expansive strings, sparse piano, and whisper-close vocals invite listeners to observe Lynch's most introspective moments, and inevitably turn the mirror on themselves. In the widest sense, Little Disappearance circles around various forms of loss—loss of self, loss of memory, loss of time and youth; the endless cycle of losing your footing, and searching for something steady to hold on to. Throughout the record, Lynch oscillates between universality and specificity, moments of questioning and glimmers of hope, all while making peace with the fleeting and impermanent nature of life—as she sings on "Keeping Time": "It's true/I know the moon isn't there for me to hold on to". While the act of disappearing is often equated with vanishing or ceasing to exist, Lynch views it more as a process of making space, particularly regarding this record, which she says holds "a dissolving resentment, a release, a fading memory, a changing reflection; a little disappearance." Interview with Michigander

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michigander over Zoom video! Michigander, is an exciting indie rock artist on the rise who has already generated more than 12 million streams globally. Michigander recently released the uplifting rock anthem "Let Down" via C3 Records, which has been receiving lots of support and playlisting from Spotify, Apple Music and SiriusXM's Alt Nation, including placement on Spotify's New Music Friday, and is currently making waves at AAA radio across the country. PRESS HERE to listen/watch the official music video and hear the folk-tinged B-Side "48" that was recently released. PRESS HERE to watch a live performance of "Let Down" from Lincoln Hall in Chicago, which was recorded in August. Michigander also recently took the virtual stage for Lollapalooza's 2020 livestream. Michigander emanates a magnetic Midwest spirit, delivering uplifting anthems, raised even higher by six-string fireworks, empowering lyrics, and understated arena ambition. The sonic alter ego of Michigan native, singer, songwriter, producer, and guitarist Jason Singer, Michigander, which was brought to life during 2014 while moving across his home state to Kalamazoo, has garnered the acclaim of NPR, Paste, NME, SPIN and many more, in addition to his 12 million-plus streams. In 2016, the independent single "Nineties" took off, claiming real estate on multiple major Spotify playlists and cracking 1 million streams on the platform. Between releasing the 2018 EP Midland, Jason and his band shared the stage with the likes of Ra Ra Ra Riot, Tokyo Police Club, Twin Peaks, and JR JR in addition to gracing the stages of festivals with alt-j, Solange, Foster The People, and Run The Jewels, to name a few. Signed to C3 Records, Michigander recorded and released the EP Where Do We Go From Here in 2019 and expanded his sound, as illuminated on the singles "Misery" and "Popular," the latter of which saw placements on Spotify's The New Alt, Fresh Finds, and Rock'n Vibes playlists and peaked at #21 on the AAA charts. Jason wrote everything for his latest EP in his bedroom over the course of six months and co-produced the collection alongside Jake Rye. He emphasized the prominence of solos—in every song—making what he aptly describes as, "big pop songs disguised with guitars." Ultimately, listening to Michigander makes you feel at home, like you're driving through the Midwest. And he's only getting started. Michigander will be releasing lots more music in 2021, and pre-Covid was confirmed for appearances at Electric Forrest, Shaky Knees, Lollapalooza and Firefly, so big things are on the horizon for the rising artist. Interview with Datarock

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Datarock over Zoom video! 'Tick Tock' is one of the new songs we ended up writing & producing during the Norwegian COVID-19 lockdown - coincidentally kicking in at the exact time we were supposed to tour & celebrate the 15 year anniversary for our debut 'DATAROCK DATAROCK' (2005) - printed first time ever as limited edition translucent, orange vinyl for Record Store Day 2020. Immersing ourselves in the joyful work we did 15 years ago - and at the same time trying to cope with the new (ab)normal - we ended up producing a song somewhat tied in with the post-punk & indie-dance from our 2005 debut: Part affected by the BLM movement and global reactions to police brutality, the political awakening among even the very young, polarizing reactions, rhetorics & the nature of the upcoming (un)presidential US election, and of course parts affected by the intense seriousness of the ongoing pandemic, 'Tick Tock' revolve around the dire need for everyone in the US to vote so our globally interlocked society can hopefully move on in a better direction after November 3rd. For the ones who don't care about lyrics 'Tick Tock' is the sound of desperately trying to enjoy ourselves in the darkest of moments; joy as an act of resistance... Written, arranged, performed & produced by DATAROCK in our own studio. Mixed by the legendary Steve Dub (UNKLE, Roots Manuva, New Order, The Prodigy, Leftfield, Primal Scream, Orbital, Moby, Underworld) whom won the Grammy last year for best electronic album with 'No Geography' by The Chemical Brothers. Mastered by the pioneering engineer Mike Marsh (Stereo MC's, Bjork, Massive Attack, Chemical Brothers, Basement Jaxx, Oasis, Prodigy, Depeche Mode). Released on YAP Records via Sony's The Orchard. Interview with Emily Hackett

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Hackett over Zoom video! Emily Hackett is the rare songwriter who doesn't just pour her heart into her lyrics. She inspires every listener to reach a deeper honesty in their own lives. With her easy candor and stunningly detailed storytelling, the Nashville-based artist bravely sheds light on the countless liabilities of being human: all the insecurities and secret longings, fears and frustrations and irrepressible dreams. And as her radiant voice captures the most nuanced of emotions, Hackett ultimately transforms even the most painful feelings into something glorious. It's exactly that alchemy that recently found Hackett named one of CMT's Next Women of Country Class of 2019, a distinction hat's helped launch the careers of luminaries like Kelsea Ballerini and Maren Morris. That announcement followed the release of By the Sun: a five-track EP that marks the first half of Hackett's debut album, hailed by Rolling Stone as a "smart meeting-point between early-Aughts pop, country's current genre playfulness and the one-name women of the Nineties (Faith, Trisha, Shania)." Featuring the acclaimed singles "Good Intentions" and "Nostalgia" (two tracks in frequent rotation on Radio Disney Country and CMT), By the Sun also channels the boundless energy that Hackett's long brought to the stage. Throughout By the Sun, Hackett endlessly blends all different genres, offering up everything from the soulful swagger of "Good Intentions" to the Irish-folk balladry of "Yours." From song to song, By the Sun reveals the vibrant musicality that Hackett's honed her entire life. Growing up outside Atlanta, she realized her passion for music as a little girl, thanks largely to her father—a former rock critic whom Hackett describes as "a total music junkie, that quintessential dad who's always bringing a guitar to the campfire." Through her father's record collection, Hackett discovered singer/songwriters like Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. After hearing Hackett sing along to Aretha Franklin's "Respect" and noting the then-five-year-old's preternatural vocal command, her father asked if she had any interest in learning a musical instrument. Although she first took up flute—inspired by Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, no less—Hackett soon moved on to guitar and in sixth grade began writing songs of her own. When it came time for college, Hackett headed to Belmont University to study songwriting but later shifted her focus to the business side of the music industry ("It had a lot to do with fear—I felt like I had to have a backup plan," she says). But not long after landing an internship at Big Machine Records, her trajectory took a major turn when a friend asked Hackett to write a song for his wedding. Through a string of serendipitous events, she ended up recording the track with Parachute's Will Anderson (and with producer/songwriter Mikey Reaves, whom she eventually married). Almost immediately after Anderson shared "Take My Hand (The Wedding Song)" on social media, the 2014 ballad hit #4 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter chart and, in under two months, garnered over 50k streams on Soundcloud. And in a burst of inspiration true to her visionary spirit, Hackett put out a call for couples to submit footage from their own weddings, then used those clips to create the "Take My Hand" video (a beautifully poignant piece that's amassed over 24 million YouTube views). Emboldened by the success of "Take My Hand"—now at 3.5 million plays on Spotify, and so wildly popular as a wedding song that Hackett's begun selling sheet music on her website—Hackett put out The Raw EP in 2015. But when she set to work on her debut album, Hackett decided to expand that sound and show the full scope of her musical identity and sensibilities. To that end, her forthcoming By The Moon EP includes emotionally thorny offerings like "Easy," a song about owning up to past i --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Young Culture

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Young Culture over Zoom video! Young Culture, the Albany, NY natives, are a three-piece alternative rock band. Childhood friends Alex Magnan (vocals), Gabe Pietrafesa (guitar), and Troy Burchett (guitar) quickly realized that they shared the same love of music. However, life moved on, different directions were taken and five years later, the boys banded together to create their lively and energetic group, Young Culture. The group takes influence from pop, hip-hop, country, hardcore, and alternative rock genres, all of which seamlessly blend the diverse backgrounds and styles of each member of the group. This is demonstrated in their recent single, "Holiday In Vegas", which explodes with an upbeat melody, a catchy chorus, and accurately depicts the fun, light-heartedness that can be your early 20s. Young Culture are three guys genuinely doing what they love – connecting to listeners through their experiences and sharing an overall love for their community. The band recently released their debut album via Equal Vision Records. We want to hear from you! Interview with Jesse Palter

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jesse Palter over Zoom audio! Singer-songwriter JESSE PALTER is emerging as part of the next generation of elite music artists. A gifted songwriter and a versatile vocalist, Palter burst onto the scene with a naturally skilled voice that ranges from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle, earning her instant comparisons to the likes of Sara Bareilles and Norah Jones. Palter released her debut studio album, PAPER TRAIL, in 2019 to critical acclaim and recently dropped her poignant follow-up single "BETTER DAYS". Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Palter's eclectic musical upbringing laid the foundation for her music. While in her middle school's jazz band, Palter began writing songs. She made a connection with famed singer/songwriter Andrew Gold ("Thank You For Being A Friend"), who brought her to Nashville to work on original material. At 15, she began working with the GRAMMY winning production team, the Bass Brothers, known for their work with Eminem. Palter attended the University of Michigan as a jazz vocalist. During this time, she continued to hone her performance skills, leading The Jesse Palter Quartet to win 4 years of outstanding jazz awards at The Detroit Music Awards. She shared the stage with jazz music greats, and later headlined at top venues across the country. Testament to Palter's diversity in music genres, she soon joined forces with acclaimed keyboardist, SAM BARSH, to create PALTER EGO, a popular duo that blended upbeat pop with jazz and soul.
