Interview with Nina Herzog

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nina Herzog over Zoom video! Los Angeles singer/songwriter NINA HERZOG has waited years for. Her long-awaited six-song debut EP, TOGETHER AWAY, is out now via Label Logic as distributed by Ingrooves. NINA HERZOG has been called a "vintage songstress" by Broadway World, has sung on over 200 songs for Hal Leonard Publishing, BMI Publishing, Sony, and Universal, has performed with The National Symphony Orchestra conducted by the late Marvin Hamlisch, and with Grammy® Award-winning composer/arranger Patrick Williams (Barbra Streisand, Frank Sinatra), has starred in Buzzfeed comedy videos, and she's been the voice of Odette, The Swan Princess, from Sony Animation's "The Swan Princess" since 2018. Now, it's finally her turn for time in the spotlight singing her own songs. TOGETHER AWAY is a six-song EP, full of touching melodies and honest emotions, a journey that explores the landscape of unconditional love and profound loss with an open heart. The songs unfold like a romantic novel, moving through longing, infatuation, intimacy and on to separation. "I wanted to express the ways lovers and loved ones retain the sensation of being eternally present in each other's lives, the ways in which humans are able to feel deeply connected - despite death or great distances." NINA HERZOG became a star for her work as the singing and speaking voice of Odette, The Swan Princess, in Sony Animation's "The Swan Princess" series. The role was the culmination of a singing career that started in grammar school. Before the pandemic hit, HERZOG maintained an ambitious schedule singing with symphony orchestras, doing voice over work, working as a session singer for jingles and film scores, recording demos for other songwriters, acting and singing in plays--and working with a small non-profit organization that helps families with essential needs, provides educational opportunities, and focuses on community building. A few years ago, HERZOG began writing her own songs. She's now ready to share them with the world. We want to hear from you! Interview with Ben Schuller

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Schuller over Zoom video! Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and producer Ben Schuller releases his new song "Full Throttle," the latest single and 8th "chapter" from his forthcoming album 'New Roaring 20s.' Watch the official video for "Full Throttle" here. "Full Throttle" is a moody, beat-driven track that sees the central character on 'New Roaring 20s' coming to terms with his self-destructive choices. Read more about the new song in Ben's recent interview with Variance Magazine. "'Full Throttle' is about realizing that you're heading full speed down a destructive path, but you can't stop," says Ben. "Building off the themes from my last chapter, 'Blueberry Diamonds,' this track hits a more somber tone. My character has all but accepted the inevitable crash." 'New Roaring 20s' is Schuller's stark and revealing manifesto about growing up as a digital native under the microscope of the internet. The album unflinchingly examines how being a social media star has affected the trajectory of his life, for better or worse - and as a prominent YouTuber with over 3 million followers, Schuller knows a thing or two about two about the topic. Hear more about Ben's story during his recent interview with SwitchboxTV. UPROXX said Schuller has "an ear for pop's current sound," calling him a rising pop star of 2021, and Hollywood Life called 'New Roaring 20s' an "introspective look at what it's like to be raised by the Internet." 'New Roaring 20s' will be released in full this spring. Stay tuned for more from Ben Schuller. We want to hear from you! Interview Lydia Luce

We had the pleasure of interviewing Lydia Luce over Zoom video! Luce was known as the go-to strings session player in Nashville working with everyone from Dolly Parton to Eminem but is now stepping into her own spotlight. She is completely independent and without the help of a label has amassed MILLIONS of streams (6.1 million in 2020 alone) through Spotify playlist inclusions which has been the launch pad for her new critically acclaimed album Dark River - a distinct take and unique blend of classical, vintage pop and indie rock influences. Luce grew up in a strict musical household where her mother was a professional conductor and did not present learning the violin as a choice. From six years old she excelled in numerous philharmonics but knew her path was not that of a professional classical musician. Dark River's themes include anxiety and reflecting on the environmental crisis, a reality Luce faced personally after being hit by the Tennessee March tornado that ripped through her home in East Nashville. She also draws on the risky summit hikes and tumultuous relationship that inspired her poignant tales of loneliness, isolation and clarity of mind. We want to hear from you! Interview with Dolo Tonight

We had the pleasure of interviewing Dolo Tonight over Zoom video! "I'm Bill Nye-meets-Cartoon Network-meets-a rapper, all in one," describes Dolo Tonight. The 23-year-old artist is vibrant, enthusiastic, and tapped into an array of cultures. Raised by artistic parents in the Central New Jersey town of Watchung, just outside of New York City, Dolo traces his creativity and analytical skills to his home life. He was encouraged to pursue his passions from an early age and an initial interest in the drums gave way to Jazz, Punk Rock and eventually Hip Hop after hearing Chance The Rapper's influential album, Acid Rap. Dolo Tonight was drawn to the poetry and wordplay of Hip Hop as well as an ability to be honest and expressive. He began to study the art form, listening to different rappers and producers, and one day happened upon a chance encounter with the Grammy Award-winning mixer Michael Ashby (Cardi B, Fetty Wap) at Mission Chinese. Dolo recognized him and introduced himself, and only a short time later they began working together on music.2019's "Blue" proved that the rapper had something special, 2020's "Zoom" began to present his range. Employing a spacey sound, Dolo's bright, melodic voice used planetary wordplay. "It's a single that leads into the story of Back To Earth," he says. The colorful video, directed by friend/rap peer Kayo Genesis, showed Dolo's unique personality. Elsewhere, he and Ashby enlisted producers Aruu, JohnEcks, Dave Hirsh, and Austin Marc to cultivate the perfect canvas for an animated delivery and heartfelt lyrics for his debut project back To Earth We want to hear from you! Interview with Whole Damn Mess

We had the pleasure of interviewing Whole Damn Mess over Zoom video! Rock 'n' roll causes a physical response. Hips sway, feet tap, heads nods, and hearts race. On stage and on tape, Whole Damn Mess provoke a primal reaction. Packing a potent punch with timeless songcraft and unbridled energy. The Los Angeles band—Don Miggs, C. Todd Nielsen, Lawrence Katz, and Greg Hansen (along with a permanent "ensemble" of drummers and bass players)—forge an instant connection that's as lively as their performances. After canvasing the country alongside iconic acts, receiving acclaim from Diffuser and Vents, and releasing fan favorite projects, the group ignite a tried-and-true approach with a fresh fire in 2021. If anybody can make you feel this way, it's this crew… Whole Damn Mess represents the union of lifelong musicians and friends with a mind-blowing collective pedigree. Don founded and led MIGGS to international popularity (in addition to collaborating with everyone from Billy Corgan to Mick Fleetwood- who happens to beat the hell out of the drums on a track), Lawrence has been the long-time guitar player for The Mighty Mighty BossTones, while C. Todd and Greg have found success in their side project Floyd Wonder. In addition, they all write and produce for film and TV, as well as upcoming and established artists- in their spare time! But when they come together, proverbial sparks fly. They churn out "new music with legacy sensibilities." Just cause Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and The Eagles aren't still making rock, it doesn't mean we don't need it, so that's exactly what Whole Damn Mess present. Proudly identifying as "a group of four guys who aren't teenagers but still fight like it," they approach music with a clear perspective on reality and an understanding of the challenges to maintain a piece of yourself in the face of mounting responsibilities. Shocking this sentiment to life, they rallied around a shared vision. In 2018, they dropped their full-length debut The Queen and the Outcast followed by the Princes Turn to Thieves EP a year later; the former detailing Don's 12-year love affair with his wife and the latter dealing with the realities of making a life together. Having gotten that all out of their systems they began to consider what the new music would represent, thematically and Don experienced an important revelation. Over the course of 2020, they perfected this approach. Relying on the perspectives of four singers, four musicians, and four producers, they reached the nexus of their respective talents through sessions in Los Angeles and Tampa, FL. Meanwhile, mix engineer extraordinaire Mark Needham [The Killers, Imagine Dragons] put the finishing touches on the tracks to make them "sound like a rolling train of goodness," according to Greg. Whole Damn Mess turn the page on this next chapter with the single "Nothing In The World Feels Better." On the track, a propulsive beat glides underneath warm guitars before a hypnotic chant takes hold with a straightforward, yet poignant message. "It was inspired by enjoying the small parts of your life, because sometimes, it doesn't get better than that," explains Greg. "That's ultimately what life is about like waking up next to someone you love every day. Regardless of where you're at in life or what you have, there's always something you can appreciate and feel good about." Ultimately, this is music curated by guys who love music as much today as they did as teens. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Mimi Webb

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mimi Webb over Zoom video! On the verge of a major breakthrough this year, 19-year-old UK singer/songwriter Mimi Webb returns with a new single and music video entitled "Reasons". The track pairs delicate clean guitar with her expansive delivery. Confessional verses give way to a sweeping hook as she declares, "We're just people made of broken pieces. I've got secrets. You've got secrets in your eyes." Meanwhile, the accompanying visual directed by Moon, captures the song's upbeat energy and undeniable magic all at once. Like an abstract painting in motion, the clip collects dazzling vignettes of Mimi on a playground swing, in a porcelain bathtub, and rotating on a mirrored circle as she dons stunning high-fashion couture looks for each scene. It ultimately reflects the emotional whirlwind of the single. About "Reasons," she commented, "For me, this song really represents the feelings of loneliness, but in the way where we are all just people made up of a bunch of different things. You only have yourself to rely on for this, but then it comes to meeting someone who has all the same broken parts as you do—which turns into a messed-up love. The making of this music video was such an incredible experience. The crew were all just so amazing, and glam really pulled it out the bag. It was the biggest video I've done so far and was so fun to really push myself out of my comfort zone from the looks we went for to the positions and movements I was throwing. I really felt my confidence take over and never felt more powerful." It's just one of many reasons to love Mimi Webb… Most recently, Mimi captivated fans and tastemakers with "I'll Break My Heart Again." It has already generated 1.5 million Spotify streams and 128K YouTube views on the music video. Receiving acclaim, FLAUNT premiered the video, while Wonderland put it best, "Already it seems Webb has carved out her own niche of balladic pop, packed with vocal dynamite and stirring instrumentals, and on "I'll Break My Heart Again" things are no different." Last year, her buzzing anthem "Before I Go" caught fire on Tik Tok when platform superstar Charli D'Amelio utilized it in not one, but two videos (here and here). This was unheard of and entirely unprecedented for a new artist. The track ultimately reached the famous creator's 106.4M million followers, generating a total of over 85.7million views, 13.5M likes, 304.2K comments, 118.7K shares in the app. Simultaneously, "Before I Go" amassed over 12.2 million Spotify streams and 615K YouTube views on the music video. Inciting tastemaker applause, Wonderland praised, "Webb's distinctive husky vocals and gut-wrenching lyricism." Meanwhile, Consequence of Sound raves that, "Mimi Webb has an unassuming sense of style and a voice that hits like a belt of brandy." Right now, she's preparing her debut EP set to arrive later this year. Get ready to fall in love with Mimi Webb. We want to hear from you! Interview with John Duff

We had the pleasure of interviewing John Duff over Zoom video! Singer-Songwriter, Director, & Social Media Influencer John Duff released a new single with the help from his dog (DJ Baby Duff). DJ Baby Duff is a double-Sagittarius short-haired Brussels Griffon. She weighs six pounds and stands at about four apples tall. One day, Baby stepped on John's phone and changed the music - and that's when John realized: she had a gift and she should become a DJ."I asked her if she wanted to do a song, and she didn't say anything so, I decided for her. She mainly likes treats. I'm not even sure she's enjoying this whole process, but that doesn't matter! I'm a mom and I'm having a lot of fun. The more fame we get, the more treats she gets," said Duff. The song "100% Baby" was written long before Baby made her move to LA. It was originally a mid-tempo bubblegum track, inspired by the word "baby" and it's over-usage in pop music. When DJ Baby Duff heard the track, she didn't react at all. She doesn't enjoy the sound of music, but mama knew what to do - so, John had her inject it with some puppy energy. Very inspired by Duff's love of Baltimore Club music. The music video for "100% Baby" was a collaboration with animator Sqott. John started following his Instagram @sqott after they both met very drunk at a saké bar in the East Village years ago. "He creates the wildest animations - all very similar in style to "100% Baby". We didn't want the video to be too sexy, cause she's so young - and so his colorful larger than life style really felt like a natural fit," said John. In terms of making the video - the first step was dieting. Baby was going through a rough patch at the top of quarantine. When she first moved to LA she was three pounds, and within a month she was five pounds. That's nearly doubling in size, which obviously weighed very heavily on her confidence (pun very much intended). Baby trained with an incredible dog trainer, Kirstin McMillan - as Baby wanted to perform all of her own stunts. We then worked with a photographer, Davide Laffe, to capture her best angles as she dazzled everyone on set with her shear athleticism, beauty, and charisma. The footage was sent to Sqott, and then we really don't ask what he did - cause somethings are better left unsaid. You can call him though! We have his number! Spoiler Alert!!! The video ends with DJ Baby Duff being the hero for destroying the wanted Octopus/Monster - but does DJ Baby Duff get the reward that was promised? Well, I guess we will just have to wait and find out if Baby got the reward. Truly, it is all of us are receiving a reward when we make the selfless decision to devote three minutes to Baby's talent and beauty! We want to hear from you! Interview with Cha Wa

We had the pleasure of interviewing Cha Wa over Zoom video! GRAMMY-nominated band Cha Wa will return on April 2 with My People, a new collection that draws from the rich and vibrant street culture of New Orleans. Arriving via the renowned southern independent label Single Lock Records, My People exuberantly infuses contemporary sounds with the music of street parades and the Mardi Gras Indian community – a group of Black New Orleanians who pay respect to Native American tribes their wardrobe, music and dialect. Packed with a vivid assemblage of New Orleans sounds and stories, this collection of new original songs draws from the grooves of '70s New Orleans funk bands like The Meters (particularly on offerings like "Wildman" and "Bow Down") and takes clear influence from the city's history of Brass band music, jazz, R&B, hip-hop, rock, soul and African-inspired arrangements (including a chilling cover of Bob Dylan's "Masters Of War" in this style). Cha Wa was formed by bandleader Joe Gelini shortly before the release of the group's 2018 debut album Spyboy, which was recognized with a Best Regional Roots Album nomination at the GRAMMYs that year. A student of the legendary New Orleans drummer Idris Muhammad, Gelini was taken by the city's street culture along with the sounds of the Mardi Gras Indians and began to immerse himself in that world after moving to the area. Working with vocalist Joseph Boudreaux Jr, a lifelong member of those New Orleans musical circles, and many of the top musicians from the city's Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs and Second Line brass bands, Cha Wa quickly became a staple of that street culture before bringing their spin on Mardi Gras Indian music to the GRAMMYs and around the world. With roots dating back to the 19th century, Mardi Gras Indians are most commonly associated with internationally-known New Orleans celebrations like Fat Tuesday, but the tradition is said to have started as a way for the city's Black community to express gratitude to Native Americans for giving shelter to New Orleanians fleeing enslavement. In more recent years, Mardi Gras Indians have displayed their role as community leaders with front line responses to both Hurricane Katrina and the unlawful NOPD conduct that resulted in investigations by the Obama administration.
