Interview with Walking Papers
We had the pleasure of interviewing Walking Papers over Zoom video! "The Deep Cinematic Rock We Crave" That's how PancakesAndWhiskey.com described THE LIGHT BELOW, the highly anticipated third album by WALKING PAPERS (frontman Jefferson Angell and keyboard player/longtime collaborator Benjamin Anderson), was just released via Carry On Music and can be purchased or streamed here. Videos for the album's first three singles, "Divine Intervention," "The Value of Zero" and "What Did You Expect?" can be seen now on the band's official YouTube and Vevo pages. To listen to WALKING PAPERS is like gaining access to a secret society, like stumbling upon your new favorite bar behind an unmarked door — the kind where every patron has a story, and every night is a late one. With THE LIGHT BELOW, we're once again invited behind the velvet curtain, to the smoke-filled room where whiskey-voiced Angell holds court, telling his tales over bluesy riffs with an alluring darkness. Known for his bruised, evocative vocals, and craftsman-like songwriting, he uses the new album to build on an already formidable catalog, with a cinematic style that oscillates between lust and loathing. Described by Angell as "a sort of mindfulness exercise," the new tracks focus restless energy left in the wake of personal loss and creative self-doubt. "I've always used music as a way to deal with negative experiences and to figure myself out," he explains, "I've lost a few close friends the last couple years and some of these songs provided the light I needed to process that. Those same songs have now become a way to continue a conversation with the ghosts." With a diverse array of legendary supporting members itching to hop in and jam over the years, including Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses), Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees), it's no surprise that caliber of musicianship is what WALKING PAPERS has become notorious for. This time around, they've recruited Will Andrews (drums), Gregor Lothian (Saxophone), and Dean DeLeo (Stone Temple Pilots) for some roof-raising guitar work on "Divine Intervention" as well as "Stood up at the Gates of Heaven." Interview with Clay 'Krucial' Perry III
We had the pleasure of interviewing Clay "Krucial" Perry III over Zoom video! Memphis' newest hometown hero Clay "Krucial" Perry III released his major label mixtape debut, If We Must Die, via Tay Keith's Drumatized label and Warner Records. Clay came to fame as a revered sound engineer who's worked with artists like NBA Youngboy and Rico Nasty, but he's since leapt from the mixing board to the booth. If We Must Die featuring Tripped Red and Tay Keith is an accomplished tape filled with emotional and sonically progressive trap anthems. Over booming drums, grinding guitars, and haunted keys provided by Drumatized producers, Clay details his indomitable rise in lyrics as vivid as they are poignant. Listen HERE. If We Must Die is equally banging and thoughtful, finding Clay weighing his success in the studio against all he's survived. Lead single, "4TheDayiGo," which received a powerful and cinematic video, is one of several pained ballads. Backed by a moody suite of sparse keys and thumping drums, Clay juxtaposes his constant grind with the mortal threat of street life: "I told you I ain't wanna live my life this way / Keep my strap on me, I could go die any day." If We Must Die also features the rising single "Not My Fault." In unforgettable auto-tuned croons, Clay swears retaliation for any opposition and affirms he's working too hard to "smoke, kick, and talk." Clay has been working for several years under the "Krucial" moniker, releasing well-received independent projects like Krucifix (2018), It Could've Been Different (2019), and The Hussle Theory (2019), which garnered the attention of prominent super-producer and fellow Memphis native Tay Keith. In 2020, Tay Keith signed Clay to his growing label, Drumatized, as its debut act. And yet, If We Must Die still feels like just the beginning for Clay. He's ready to bring his label and his city with him as he takes his sound well beyond Memphis. We want to hear from you! Interview with Andrew Adkins
We had the pleasure of interviewing Andrew Adkins over Zoom video! Across the Cumberland River from Music City, the burgeoning neighborhood of East Nashville has become a haven for artists, songwriters, and other creatives. One such songwriter is Andrew Adkins, who has been a part of the Nashville community for over a decade. As the city expands and modernizes while preserving its heritage, so too does Andrew's music. Early in his career, Adkins co-founded two dynamic groups which served as introductions to the music business. He toured with his blues-infused power trio, Mellow Down Easy (Dualtone Records), for eight years. His gritty-rock band, Lions for Real, made waves amongst the music industry before catching the attention of Werewolf Heart Records, the indie-label fronted by actor Ryan Gosling. The band imploded almost as quickly as it surfaced, leaving Adkins uncertain of his musical future. After years of collaborating in bands, Andrew decided to step away and develop his own distinct sound -- a unique blend of roots-influenced, neo-psychedelic rock. Since 2013, he has released several critically acclaimed solo albums. His songs have been featured in television and film (CBS, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, History, MTV, Oxygen, and Lionsgate Films). Andrew has shared the stage with artists including Sturgill Simpson, Cage the Elephant, Little Big Town, A Thousand Horses, Dum Dum Girls, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, Billy Joe Shaver, and Wayne "The Train" Hancock among others. Check out Andrew Adkins' new album, "The Echoist" (Elephant Seed Records). The record is a neo-psychedelic, soul-drenched collection of sounds, shades, and moods, showcasing Andrew's ability to blur the lines between multiple genres and styles. We want to hear from you! Interview with Talia Londoner
We had the pleasure of interviewing Talia Londoner over Zoom video! With the release of her vibrant, retro-pop video for "Get It Out," the LA-born, Tel Aviv-based singer/songwriter Talia Londoner shares the first taste of her euphoric musical sound, destined to place her among the next generation of pop stars. Combining the vibrant feminist visuals of early Madonna and the classic emotional style of Katy Perry, Robyn, and Kylie Minogue, "Get It Out" was produced and designed with renowned Penthouse photographer Hank Londoner and director Boaz Aquino, taking listeners back to the anthemic, party pop of the 1980s. It's the first single from Londoner's debut EP, out this fall. Talia's style and aesthetic was shaped by a uniquely colorful background, growing up the daughter of Penthouse head photographer, Hank Londoner, and prima ballerina, Susan Freedman Londoner, in an iconic LA home commonly referred to as "the Dollhouse." Boasting a bright yellow facade and an unmissable red door, each room surprised guests with a different color and floral textured wallpaper, creating a bright whimsical environment for the aspiring creative, and for the host of colorful characters who came through its doors each day. The dollhouse is the birthplace for Talia's bold and honest approach; it's where she learned that truth and a willingness to reveal all of your colors can be a glue that bring people together. The making of "Get It Out" was a complete family-affair, with both Hank and Susan contributing to its production, design, and styling. Transplanting from LA to Tel Aviv in 2013, Londoner found herself in high demand as a songwriter, collaborating with prominent groups like UK's Invisible Men, Simon Cowell's former head of A&R Anya Jones, Cutfather, and Israeli producer Oren Emanuel. After making it to the Top 10 on "The Voice," she toured the country and saw numerous radio hits with the Israeli electro-pop outfit, Let's Mars. The release of "Get It Out" marks Londoner's return to the US after a whirlwind trip abroad, and the birth of her unique brand of timeless pop that she hopes will unite and inspire.
