Interview with Getters
We had the pleasure of interviewing Getters over Zoom video! With the premiere of their recent singles "Tidal Wave," "Row" and "Blindsided", Houston rock band Getters offered a preview of their blistering 6-song EP; a unique blend of rhythmic, spatial indie rock that promises to be "the cannonball that shakes your existence" (our June 6/24th). Amidst the uncertain times the world has been experiencing, Getters chose to focus on positivity and creativity. You won't find rose-colored glasses or visions of grandeur on 'We Are Getters.' Instead, Micah Miller (drums), Jerry Nettles (guitars, keys), and Christopher Goodwin (vocals) found fulfillment through a creative outlet and a desire to share genuine moments with those who would connect with them. Having each been a part of numerous musical projects over the years, the members of Getters share nearly two decades of friendship and artistic collaboration. In the shadow of 2020 and with live touring put on pause, what began as a spare time creative outlet grew on the hearts and minds of those involved, inspired by a simple desire to connect with others in an otherwise bleak moment in time. "We aim to connect with people the best way we know how," said Nettles. "Until we're able to perform in a live setting, our hope is that anyone can listen and relate to a lyric or experience a feeling we felt when writing these songs." The band will release one track every month until the EP release in June, providing a 360-degree perspective of their wide array of sounds, thought provoking lyrics, and gravitating vocal melodies. All three of the members have experienced the ups and downs of the music industry, from being signed to major labels, to starting their own management and record labels, and all points in between. The guitarist, Jerry Nettles, even spent a few years running marketing for some record labels in NYC. They wold love to speak with you about their various experiences in the industry, and how their work on the business side of the industry informs their new project. We want to hear from you! Interview with Orgy
We had the pleasure of interviewing Orgy over Zoom video! Los Angeles-based industrial metal band Orgy is back with a brand new single "Karma Kastles." The track marks the band's first release of 2021. Staying true to their musical roots firmly established in 1997, "Karma Kastles" crunching guitars, electronic undertones and soaring vocals are what fans have gravitated towards for nearly three decades. "I wrote 'Karma Kastles' about the madness people in LA face--when it comes to relationships (both romantic and bromantic)," says Orgy's frontman Jay Gordon. "There are just so many options on both sides, it gets insanely difficult to keep up with the madness and treachery. It's tough enough just trying to figure out who your 'real' friends are, let alone trying to date someone here. Things like geographical desirability and what kind of whip you drive, unfortunately play such bizarre roles in the typical LA relationship. We all build our own 'Karma Kastles' here in La La Land. Toxic and jaded with a twist of sex and a hint of scandal. Then we wake up like 'wtf was I even thinking!' You gotta love it, 'cause it builds character and makes you miss home, wherever you're from." Orgy—who is Jay Gordon (lead vocals), Carlton Bost (guitar, backing vocals), Nic Speck (bass, backing vocals), Creighton Emrick (guitar, backing vocals) and Marton Veress (drums)--recorded "Karma Kastles" between Gordon's North Hollywood studio and home during the pandemic. "Karma Kastles" is the first single from a new Orgy EP which will arrive later this year. About ORGY: Originally formed in 1997, ORGY was signed to KORN's label Elementree Records and released their debut album Candyass in 1998. Featuring their two hit singles, a cover of the New Order song "Blue Monday" and "Stitches" along with the song "Revival" featuring Jonathan Davis of KORN, the album went on to sell almost two million copies. ORGY appeared on the Family Values Tour with KORN, Limp Bizkit, Ice Cube, Incubus and Rammstein and were featured on the live compilation album from the tour released in 1999. Their second album, the science fiction-themed Vapor Transmission, was released in 2000 featuring the singles "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)" and "Opticon" and the band later released the song "Faces" for the soundtrack to the movie Zoolander. Other releases from ORGY include the album Punk StatiK Paranoia (2004) and the Talk Sick EP (2015), with single releases since including "Grime of the Century," "Wide Awake and Dead," "Army To Your Party," "High Summer Sun" (with Pure Obsessions & Red Nights) and the 2020 re-release of "The Spectrum."For 2021, look for the band who is Jay Gordon (lead vocals) and Carlton Bost (guitar, backing vocals) along with Nic Speck (bass, backing vocals), Creighton Emrick (guitar, backing vocals) and Marton Veress (drums) to release an EP of new music and will tour when the pandemic ends. Interview with AJ Mitchell
We had the pleasure of interviewing AJ Mitchell over Zoom video! You'll find Belleville, IL about six hours south of Chicago. It often resembles a ghost town with its many hollowed-out and abandoned factories, marathon winters, and endless cornfields. From the outside, it might not seem like the perfect launchpad for a future pop star, but AJ Mitchell proudly calls this place home. Long before notching 1 billion-plus streams, selling out shows, and performing on television, the singer and songwriter grew up in this small and unassuming Midwest town. Now, he doesn't forget where he came from on his full-length debut album, Skyview [Epic Records]—named for Belleville's lone drive-in theater. Since emerging in 2018, AJ Mitchell has consistently asserted himself as pop's most dynamic new leading man. Averaging over 6 million monthly listeners on Spotify, he impressively leaped past the 1-billion stream mark within three years. In addition to being named a Vevo LIFT artist and MTV Push artist, Variety championed him on its "Young Hollywood" 2020 list. Beyond acclaim from Billboard, Idolator, Highsnobiety, and Seventeen, he delivered show-stopping performances at the MTV VMAs and on The Today Show and Good Day New York. In 2019, his Slow Dance EP yielded the gold-selling title track "Slow Dance" [feat. Ava Max]. Including the latter, he has logged four songs on the Top 40 at Pop Radio thus far. Between collaborating with everyone from Steve Aoki to Rich The Kid, he assembled his full-length debut Skyview throughout 2020 with the legendary Mike Dean as Executive Producer. He takes flight on the first single "One More Fight." We want to hear from you! Interview with Ari Herstand
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ari Herstand over Zoom video! Today, singer/songwriter, entrepreneur and best-selling music business author Ari Herstand releases his introspective new album 'Like Home.' With delicate atmospheres, textured percussion and an underlying feeling of comfort, Ari invites the listener into the autobiographical sounds of transformative heartbreak. "The only way I knew how to process my breakup from an 11 year relationship was to write about it," Ari says. After writing 40 raw demos to help him navigate this monumental change, the singer narrowed his creations down to six tracks. Vulnerable, contemplative and vividly honest at times, the album lays out the singer's personal journey of rediscovering the meaning of "home" after the stable presence of a long-term relationship was lost. "I feel like I'm cheating on you when I kiss another woman," Ari admits in the opening track and previous single "Like Home," surrounded by acoustic plucking. Alongside the shimmer and sway of "Drifting," written about the dysfunction of time during a strange month living with his partner post-separation and "Birthday," a sincere piano ballad wishing her well on the first birthday apart, these three highlighted singles gave listeners a taste of the emotion yet to come. Through new tracks "Fine Without Me," "Guard" and "Half Way," a passionate anthem featuring the vocals of current partner Annabel Lee (and the muse of the song), Ari rounds out a universally relatable collection of songs that authentically examine the experience of a breakup from every angle. Overall, 'Like Home' pulls the listener into the singer's perspective in an evocatively real, reflective way. The project is an impressive venture from Ari, who has made a name for himself teaching independent artists how to succeed in the music business through his blog Ari's Take and the subsequent book and podcast series. READ more about Ari and 'Like Home' via Music Connection: https://www.weekly-bulletin.com/pdf/completeissue/April2021_Complete.pdf Tonight at 6:00 p.m. PT, Ari will host a special album release party streamed live at Hotel Cafe. Interview with Benny Sings
We had the pleasure of interviewing Benny Sings over Zoom video! Benny Sings has released his new album Music today on Stones Throw. The 10-song project features collaborations across genres including Mac DeMarco, Emily King, KYLE, Tom Misch and Cautious Clay. The album leads off today's NPR Music's New Music Friday show (Benny is a 2-time NPR Tiny Desk alum), and featured at Spin, American Songwriter, DIY and beyond. Tonight at 9pm ET / 9pm PT Benny will celebrate the album release with his first global livestream concert. He will perform selections from Music and his catalog with his full band, under the stars, at The Planetarium in his hometown of Amsterdam. Pay what you want tickets and more details here: http://www.bennysings.com/livestream/ "Wow. I started releasing tracks for this album early 2020, and what a year that has been. I worked hard on finishing it the whole year, and it feels so good to be releasing it finally. It's time to party. Can't wait to share the music, let's celebrate the year to come!" says Benny. Music has recently been spotlighted via a Zane Lowe World First Premiere on Apple 1, KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic, KEXP, Lightning 100, BBC 6 Music, coverage from Pitchfork, The Fader, HYPEBEAST, MOJO, OkayPlayer, performances on international TV, La Blogotheque and beyond. The singles released from Music thus far include "Rolled Up" featuring Mac DeMarco, "Nobody's Fault" featuring Tom Misch, and "Here It Comes", and have also over 15 million Spotify streams and counting, plus placements on a wide array of key playlists across Spotify, Apple and Deezer. Benny's songs are sophisticated and easy to fall in love with, earworming melodies and sticky choruses the result of years of craft that have made him the ultimate songwriter's songwriter. Few musicians can claim to count Rex Orange County, (with whom Benny co-wrote and performed on the platinum single, "Loving Is Easy"), Free Nationals, Goldlink, Cornelius, Mayer Hawthorne, John Mayer, Rita Ora, Anderson .Paak, Kenny Beats and Mac DeMarco as fans and collaborators, but the attraction is easy understand. Interview with Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music
We had the pleasure of interviewing Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music from the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA! ** This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic ** With his emotional and gravel-coated bellow, vocalist/guitarist Chuck Ragan made a name for himself as one-fourth of the much-loved Gainesville post-hardcore outfit Hot Water Music before releasing his first solo album in 2007. Alongside friends Chris Wollard, Jason Black, and George Rebelo, Ragan formed Hot Water Music in the early '90s. Through a slew of well-received albums for labels like No Idea, Doghouse, and Epitaph -- and an incessant grassroots touring regime -- the passionate crew turned itself into a highly respected and influential act on the underground scene. Outside of his main gig, Ragan also recorded two side albums with some friends, including the stripped-down rock of Rumbleseat and the punk-oriented Cro(w)s. In the spring of 2005, Hot Water Music went on an indefinite hiatus, largely spurred by Ragan's desire to spend time outside of the band with his growing family. The group's other members went on playing music together (soon forming the Draft), while Ragan concentrated on his home life and, eventually, writing some acoustic-based material. Hot Water Music officially closed up shop in May 2006, and Ragan began playing various shows solo, logging time by the year's end alongside acts like Dustin Kensrue, Flogging Molly, the Lawrence Arms, Rob Huddleston, and Tim Barry. Ragan (who was a carpenter by day) signed with California indie SideOneDummy Records in early 2007 for the May release of his intimate debut, Los Feliz. Recorded live on February 19, 2007 at Tangiers in Los Feliz, California, the album features Ragan armed with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, and occasionally joined on-stage by Ted Hutt and Jon Gaunt. Ragan also set up a "singles club" with his buddies at No Idea, sending subscribers a new 7" (six total) every month or so from September 2006 to June 2007. In 2008 Ragan launched the Revival Tour, a long-running, internationally acclaimed acoustic collaboration that's featured a revolving door of talented musicians from the alt-country, bluegrass, and punk scenes over the years. He released his second solo outing, Gold Country, the following year and the Christopher Thorn-produced Covering Ground in 2011, and reunited with Hot Water Music in 2012 for the album Exister. Till Midnight, his fourth solo long-player, followed in early 2014. A year later he and songwriter Rocky Voltolato released a split EP entitled Kindred Spirit on Side One Dummy. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi We want to hear from you! Interview with Crack The Sky
We had the pleasure of interviewing Crack The Sky over Zoom video! Fresh off the release of Crack The Sky's latest album, TRIBES, singer/multi-instrumentalist JOHN PALUMBO is venturing out into the funky world of HOLLYWOOD BLVD, his fifth solo album due out May 21 via Carry On Music. Pre-orders are now available here. A lyric video for the title track premiered on Ventsmagazine.com yesterday, and can now be streamed on the label's YouTube page here, which depicts the crazy and colorful town PALUMBO sings about. An artist at the top of his game, JOHN PALUMBO serves up an even dozen of finely crafted and expertly recorded gems on HOLLYWOOD BLVD. He plays all the instruments on the album himself, sans a number of key acoustic and electric slide guitar contributions from his Crack The Sky bandmate, Bobby Hird. Produced and created at PALUMBO's home studio, HOLLYWOOD BLVD was mastered by longtime CTS associate R. Lee Townsend at Real Time Studios. The earwig-inducing sonic avenues and cleverly winding wordsmithed roads that comprise HOLLYWOOD BLVD continue to cement PALUMBO's status as a shrewdly observational songwriter in the vein of Leonard Cohen and Lou Reed. As JOHN PALUMBO explains about the new music, "The best songs come out on the first try. 'Hollywood Blvd,' for example, I threw right down after establishing the groove and a proper bass line. It's as if the song actually gave birth to itself. Songs like these usually come as a series of random thoughts put into a rhyming pattern, and they're much more like poems than songs. Then, it's just the task of 'trimming the fat' to lay in the lyric to fit the music track. Rhyming can put a bit of a crunch and a restriction on things. At the same time, you're trying to make a point, you have to rhyme something with it. That really handcuffs me, so I've had to stretch the rhyming concept more than a few times."
