Interview with Lucas Carpenter

We had the pleasure of interviewing Lucas Carpenter over Zoom video! Lucas Carpenter, the "Art Kid From the Country," is using his natural gift of storytelling and unique approach to musical technology and instrumental looping to usher in a new wave of singer/songwriter. As his own auxiliary player, he adds penny whistles, percussion, keyboards, and a multitude of other nuances to his audacious performances. 'The Shimmer,' his latest release, is a reflection of the journey Lucas Carpenter has long been on and the gratitude he has for both the highs and lows that have presented themselves along the way. We had the pleasure of interviewing Matthew Heafy of Trivium over Zoom video!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Matthew Heafy of Trivium over Zoom video! Orlando, Florida's Trivium are among the most provocative, restless, and influential bands to emerge from the South in the early 21st century's heavy metal explosion. Beginning as a metalcore outfit, they have relentlessly combined and crossed styles, including thrash, prog, technical, and melodic death metal, as well as alternative and groove metal. Trivium came by their global success the old-fashioned way: touring. Since issuing their first demo in 2000, they have been road warriors. They established themselves first in the South, and then across North America before conquering festival stages in Europe and Asia supporting their sophomore long-player (and Roadrunner debut) Ascendancy in 2005. 2008's Shogun showcased epic storytelling abilities as well as a love for innovative riffs. It also provided a roadmap for future outings, and peaked at number 23 on the Top 200. Those compositional tenets and a love for narrative storytelling influenced each subsequent release, though 2011's In Waves took it further with a number 11 peak, and 2017's The Sin and the Sentence used them inside an extreme metal setting and became one of their most acclaimed albums, selling better in Europe than it did in the States. Interview with Semler

We had the pleasure of interviewing Semler over Zoom video! Grace Semler Baldridge, or Semler, is a queer singer/songwriter currently holding the #1 spot on the iTunes Christian Music Charts. Their latest project Preacher's Kid was written and recorded entirely at home on a USB mic. During quarantine Semler began to reflect and unpack their experience as a queer Christian raised in the Church. The unprecedented success of Preacher's Kid is largely due to support from TikTok where Semler has been vocal and viral about their mission for LGBTQ+ inclusion. Aside from music, Grace has been nominated for a GLAAD Award in 2020 for Outstanding Digital Journalism for this episode of their documentary series, State Of Grace. The episode dives into the exclusionary practices of the Christian Music Industry and served as a launching point for Semler creatively. We want to hear from you! Interview with Ladles

We had the pleasure of interviewing The Ladles over Zoom video! It would have been easy for The Ladles to write 2020 off as a lost year. Forced to scrap a calendar full of tour dates and stuck quarantining on opposite coasts, the trio watched helplessly as cancellation after cancellation rolled in and the prospects of making music together grew dimmer with each passing day. Everything the band had planned was up in smoke, it seemed, everything except for a three-week summer residency in the quaint little town of Springville, New York. Taking their name from another happy accident—a mislabeled campus bathroom sign that transformed "Ladies" into "Ladles"—the trio began recording and performing around New England before they'd even graduated, releasing an early self-titled EP in 2016 and following it up with their acclaimed full-length debut, 'The Line, in 2019. The band supported both releases with extensive touring, playing festivals as far afield as Louisiana and Maine and selling out shows in Boston, New York City, and the Hudson Valley along the way. With things heating up, they their sights on an ambitious 2020, only to watch it all disappear as the pandemic put a halt to live music everywhere. Rather than press pause, though, the trio pivoted to focus their efforts on writing, treating their suddenly empty schedule as an opportunity to pen a slew of new songs from their respective homes on the East and West Coasts. By the time summer rolled around, they were sitting on a treasure trove of fresh material, and the opportunity to share it with each other in Springville was too sweet to pass up, pandemic or not. If there's anything the trio learned from their days in Springville, it's that time is precious, and every moment we share—with friends, with family, with lovers—is a gift worth celebrating. Far from lost, 2020 may prove to be the band's most important year yet. For The Ladles, that's just another happy accident. We want to hear from you! Interview with Black Fortune

Together with Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Black Fortune over Zoom video! Capitalizing on momentum building over the last two months Landover, Maryland party-starter Black Fortune has announced his anticipated DMV homage project OSSHMOB. Featuring some of the hottest talent the DMV has to offer including Xanman, Lil Dude, Goonew, FatTrel, 3OH Black, MoneyMarr, Big Flock and Knuckle Head, OSSHMOB is an 11 track rollercoaster of styles and off-the-wall sound. Bringing the artist community of the DMV area is a monumental feat that Fortune made his mission to accomplish. "A lot of the time in the DMV you don't see too many artists working together because everybody got their own problems" said Fortune on the current state of affairs on his home turf. The project follows his latest track "New Gucci Garment" and video for "Horror Story," which saw him first bring together some of the cast of DMV artists included on the project. A celebration and a call for unity, OSSHMOB plants a flag in the sand as the DMV sound continues to emerge and be co-opted. Coming into his own, Black Fortune sounds inspired to snap on the curated production with his counterparts. Recorded with all artists in person between Landover and Fort Washington, OSSHMOB sounds revelatory. Interview with Tracy Bonham

We had the pleasure of interviewing Tracy Bonham over Zoom video! Tracy Bonham became an overnight sensation in the mid-90s with a hit song and double Grammy® nominations for her Gold Record certified album The Burdens of Being Upright, an edgy and complex album of angsty alt-rock songs that included her chart-topping hit single, "Mother Mother." Over the years, Bonham released six more albums to wide critical acclaim, but the debut album was the one that struck a chord with so many disenfranchised young people all over the world. While screaming "everything's fine!" all over the globe, Bonham's classical music education would continue to be an inspiration for her and would become something for her to rub up against, to challenge the idea that a musical performance must be perfect. In 2006, Tracy was touring the world as the featured vocalist and violinist with Blue Man Group for their second arena tour when she decided to take a break from life on the road to start a family. While at home, she called upon her classical music education and began teaching private piano, violin and voice lessons. Her special ability to connect with and inspire children was immediately obvious, and she began formulating a curriculum and an approach to teaching that were the building blocks of her new company, Melodeon Music House: www.melodeonmusichouse.com . In April 2021, she debuts her first children's album based on her joyful approach to music education. Young Maestros Vol. 1 is a celebration of music and movement that includes 11 songs that aren't only fun to dance and sing along to but also teach musical concepts in an entertaining and light-hearted way. Bassist Rene Hart collaborated on songwriting, and Josh Margolis co-produced the album with Bonham With these songs, Bonham conveys her conviction that anyone can make music, and anyone can get past limitations. The styles and messages of the songs harken back to the influences of such 1970s children's media as Free To Be You And Me and Sesame Street. Bonham found that the educational materials available for beginners and intermediate levels (piano, violin, or voice) did not put enough emphasis on what she considered to be the building block of a life of musical exploration and inspiration: joy. Anyone can learn how to place their fingers on a piano keyboard, or on the fingerboard of a violin to make music. But the question is how do you get a child to really care about it? Instead, the Melodeon Music House approach demonstrates that the process of making music can be more about fun than the achievement. By learning the fundamentals of music, one can create a platform for self-expression that leads to empowerment and confidence for the rest of one's life. Young Maestros Vol. 1 is just the beginning of the larger Melodeon Music House educational program that is infused with Bonham's passion for theory, harmony and the emotional well-being of children. Since 2015, Bonham has been testing her curriculum at The Brooklyn Preschool of Science, where she fell in love with teaching preschool age children. We want to hear from you! Interview with Michaela Slinger

We had the pleasure of interviewing Michaela Slinger over Zoom video! Vancouver based indie-pop artist Michaela Slinger is releasing her debut album Panorama on April 16 via 604 Records and all streaming services. Co-produced by JUNO winner Kevvy (Carly Rae Jepsen, Fake Shark) and JUNO Award nominated singer/songwriter Louise Burns, Panorama takes listeners on a dizzying journey through the first twenty-four years of Slinger's life. The 18-song debut body of work showcases her natural ability to bear her soul while still utilizing her voice as an additional instrument within each song's musical framework. You can hear ability on "Lay Down" and "Long Love", which shows the dimension to her overall sound. Michaela Slinger is a "legendary songbird in the making" (Elevate Music Project) who combines youthful, energetic, harmony-rich melodies with old soul lyricism—think Maggie Rogers meets Joni Mitchell. Michaela has always been musically inclined. By the time Slinger was three—yes, three—she had sung the national anthem at a sold-out NBA game. From there, it was obvious that music was going to be her life's passion. "Panorama feels like I packaged up 24 years' worth of my heart and soul and ideas and readied myself to drift it out to sea for whoever happens to float by. It's an exhilarating and terrifying process that I'm embarking on for my first time. I'm excited for the new places and people it will lead me to, and—I'm sure—to do it all over again soon. I hope it makes you feel something." Slinger has steadily been building emotional connections with listeners around the world through her 2020 singles "Don't Wait," "Tarot," and her most recent offering, "Make You Sad," all of which are included on Panorama. Interview with Jess Benko

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jess Benko over Zoom video! 18 year-old Jess Benko wrote her first song about a year ago, but you wouldn't know it. The Toronto native's music is a raw, yet mature and eloquently sewn together stream-of-consciousness that's sparked the makings of a core fan base and 2+ million streams a month from her bedroom. Musically inclined from the start, Jess began competitive piano at age 6, starred in choir and musical theatre productions by age 10, and taught herself guitar by 13. Always fascinated by creating melodies and the prospect of making her own music, she recalls a time when her parents "were so concerned with how often I was humming they took me to the doctor to make sure I was ok." After a well-received impromptu performance for Billie Eilish at a fan event in New York, 16 year-old Jess finally wrote and put out her first song "2002" in April 2019. She proceeded to self-release her album Do You Love Me, Or Are You Just Lonely?, which Jess feels captured the emotions of her music that "will hit you in such a deep place, like a heartache but in a good way." With 5+ million streams and landing on Spotify's Indie-Pop Chillout and idk. playlists, the rising high school senior quickly pivoted her post-grad plans to pursue music full time. Jess' altruistic approach to music is inspired by her personal life and fuels her goal to help as many people as possible regardless of their struggles. Her artistic authenticity stands out in recent single "September 13th," with soothing vocals in the midst of sadness reminiscent of key influences SYML, Jeremy Zucker, and Gracie Abrams. Now with 15+ million streams on her album and counting, she's embarked on music full time and credits this pursuit with saving her life and hopes her songs can impact others in the same way she says "music has gotten me through some very dark times and once I started writing. I found my reason to stay, my purpose." "Worst Enemy," the 18 year-old's latest offering, captures the frustration of fighting yourself in your own head over everything. Signifying a huge leap in her sound, the track acknowledges that self-sabotage is part of being human, and not something to let eat away at you. We want to hear from you!
