Anti-Racism for Christians w/ Dr. George Yancey
How can you approach and learn about racism while maintaining your conservative Christian values? I’ve invited Professor George Yancey, Ph.D. on Fed and Fearless to discuss this topic. About Professor George Yancey, Ph.D. Dr. George Yancey is a Professor of the Institute for Studies of Religion and Sociology at Baylor University. He has published several research articles on the topics of institutional racial diversity, racial identity, atheists, cultural progressives, academic bias, and anti-Christian hostility. His books include Compromising Scholarship (Baylor University Press) a book that explores religious and political biases in academia, So Many Christians, So Few Lions, a book that assesses Christianophobia in the United States, Beyond Racial Gridlock, a Christian book which articulates a mutual obligations approach to racial issues, and, with Michael Emerson, Transcending Racial Barriers, an academic book that articulates a mutual obligations approach. He is currently working on research contrasting conservative and progressive Christians. About This Episode I’ve invited Dr. George Yancey on the Fed and Fearless podcast to talk about how Christians can approach and learn more about racism in America. We discuss the four main theories that drive people's beliefs around racism: colorblindness, Anglo-conformity, multiculturalism, and White responsibility. George presents an alternative approach to these four secular frameworks that he calls Mutual Responsibility. It's a Christian-based approach whereby we recognize that people of all races have a sin nature that must be accounted for. This means that everyone has an obligation to work toward healthy interracial communications to solve racial problems. His vision offers hope that people of all races can walk together on a shared path--not as adversaries, but as partners. George shares some practical ways conservative Christians can approach racism while staying aligned with their beliefs. And overall, we need to be more open to listening to people from different backgrounds to us. Because it’s only through listening and having open conversations that we can begin to move forward and solve our nation’s problems. Did this episode resonate with you? Emotional Freedom Techniques with Stacy Claxton
Tapping is a technique that helps you find emotional and physical freedom so you can get back into your true flow - something we all strive to find! I’m joined by Stacy Claxton, an integrative health practitioner, to talk about how to release trauma and increase joy using tapping. About Stacy Claxton Stacy Claxton is a transformational coach and integrative health practitioner who helps stuck people find freedom and flow. She guides growth seekers, heart-centered healers, and embodied leaders through their biggest physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual, professional, and financial blocks to discover their boundless inner power. She adds the missing piece most mindset trainers and coaches neglect: body-centered tools to rewire the nervous system for lasting change. Her practice blends ancient and modern modalities, including Ayurvedic medicine, yoga, breathwork, meditation, somatic work, trauma healing, prenatal and postpartum care, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN), and more. An educator and entrepreneur, Stacy combines private client work with writing, speaking, facilitating small groups, and leading live transformational events. She strives to bring heart-centered, whole-person healing to a hurting, head-driven world. About EFT (Tapping) Stacy shares how she turned to Eastern treatments and techniques after suffering from chronic migraines. This discovery had such a positive impact on her health that she knew she had to learn more about it. Stacy explains exactly how trauma impacts your health and mindset. She also normalizes trauma - because everyone has something they need to work through. Many people have trauma from their childhood, even if they don’t realize it, that they should work through by doing the inner work. Further to this, holding onto trauma actually affects our personality. Trauma exists as a weight, whether you feel it or not, and that weight is constantly waging war with your personality. Stacy also explains where else in your body you hold onto trauma. Stacy talks about Emotional Freedom Techniques, such as tapping, and how these Eastern traditions help you connect with and then release your trauma. EFT (tapping) is easy to learn and something you can do anywhere, so you can start trying out this coping method right away. Stacy explains how to tap before walking us through a simple tapping exercise that will help you start letting go of your fears. I found this session really beneficial already and will definitely go back to it again. She also talks about how tapping lets you tune into your body and aid you in making positive changes to your health and fitness goals - like reducing overeating and encouraging exercising! Prenatal Nutrition Myths and Truths with Lily Nichols
Most of the information out there about prenatal nutrition is out of date. That doesn’t mean you have to forge ahead uninformed, it means you have to listen to other experts. I’m joined by Lily Nichols, RDN, to talk all things nutrition for stacking the pregnancy deck in your favor. About Lily Nichols, RDN Lily Nichols, RDN is a registered dietician/nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. She’s spent her career researching, and putting into practice with her two pregnancies, real food nutrition for pregnancy and gestational diabetes. She’s discovered a huge gap between doctor’s current advice and what the best nutrition actually is for both mother and baby. First things first, Lily breaks down some common myths about prenatal nutrition. One of the most common myths is that pregnant women shouldn’t eat runny egg yolks! Lily explains what the legitimate risk of eating them actually is and tells us what foods actually have a higher risk (you might be surprised!). What it comes down to, we both agree, is that you need to make your own decisions when it comes to what you’re eating during pregnancy. So many foods pose health risks while others might be against your personal beliefs. Ultimately, you need to make the best decisions for your situation. Lily sets out some nutrition targets for pregnant women. From how much protein you need to keep your and your baby’s health optimal to where you should get your Vitamin A from. She also details more obscure vitamins that many people haven’t even heard of. Optimal pregnancy nutrition isn’t something you should start focusing on once you know you’re carrying. Lily recommends you start optimizing your diet for at least 3 months before you start trying. She also explains why you should try to have 3 regular menstrual cycles before trying to get pregnant, too. Finally, Lily gives us a list of the most nutrient-dense foods out there that give the biggest bang for your buck. From organ meats to canned fish, getting the nutrients you need for a healthy pregnancy can be cheaper and easier than you think. What are some pregnancy nutrition myths you’ve heard? Eat The Cookie with Taylor Kiser
It’s time to build a solid foundation based on your relationship with God. I’m joined by Taylor Kiser from Food Faith Fitness to talk about how when she recognized the role God had in her life, she healed her body and grew her blogging business. About Taylor Kiser Taylor Kiser is passionate about helping women achieve health without obsession. It’s her goal to help women accept their bodies and to remove food guilt by helping you know your self-worth so they can live free. Taylor has healed herself from disordered eating twice and has built a better foundation with God in the process. Now, Taylor uses her food blogging platform, Food Faith Fitness, to help other women honor God and their bodies with healthy recipes, faith reflections, and fitness advice. When Taylor was in recovery for her disordered eating, she turned to the Bible. Growing up, she knew the Bible from the surface, but during these five weeks, she realized that God wasn’t speaking to all women - He was speaking directly to her, as he is directly speaking to all women who read His words. As with so many Christian women, Taylor explains how her perfectionism led to her food struggles. She believed her approach to food and nutrition needed to be perfect - 95% perfect. Now, Taylor approaches food in a more relaxed way, applying that famous 80/20 breakdown. During her disordered eating, Taylor shares how she lost her period. She knew she was devoid of a lot of the emotions linked to women’s hormone changes without it, and when she reclaimed her period, she felt those feelings coming back. Taylor explains how she reframed her mindset when it came to working out. She stopped using exercise as a tool for how she looked and instead focused on how she felt after working out. She also shares some easy ways to add extra veggies to your recipes. Finally, Taylor talks about what it was like starting her food blog 7 years ago and how the industry has changed. She gives some tips for how you can start a food blog now and what you need to be aware of. Have you ever wanted to start a food blog? How does your relationship with God affect your life decisions? Busting PCOS Myths with Dr. Lara Briden
Irregular periods are a common occurrence in women around the world. Whether or not you’re armed with a PCOS or Hypothalamic Amenorrhea diagnosis, there are similarities and differences you need to know. I’m joined by Dr. Lara Briden to bust all those PCOS myths you think you know. About Dr. Lara Briden Lara Briden is a naturopathic doctor and the period revolutionary—leading the change to better periods. Informed by a strong science background and more than twenty years with patients, Lara is a passionate communicator about women’s health and alternatives to hormonal birth control. Her book Period Repair Manual is a manifesto of natural treatment for better hormones and better periods and provides practical solutions using nutrition, supplements, and natural hormones. Now in its second edition, the book has been an underground sensation and has worked to quietly change the lives of tens of thousands of women. Lara has helped thousands of women find relief for period problems such as PCOS, PMS, endometriosis, and perimenopause and currently has consulting rooms in Christchurch, New Zealand. A phrase that Dr. Lara has coined is “women are not small men.” She starts this conversation by explaining what she means by this and how understanding this can help further our perception and knowledge of female health. We discuss what Polycystic Ovarian Syndrom (PCOS) and Hypothalamic Amenorrhea (HA) are and the key differences between them. While they both have irregular menstrual cycles at their core, they are very different disorders. This is why we think you should rule out whether you actually have HA before you start down the lengthy process of a PCOS diagnosis. The commonly preferred way to diagnose PCOS is by ultrasound. While there’s nothing inherently wrong about an ultrasound, this is actually not the best way to diagnose PCOS. An ultrasound can alert your doctor to cysts present in your ovaries, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you have PCOS, despite the name. Dr. Lara explains why this is before telling us her preferred lab tests for a correct diagnosis. She recommends speaking with your doctor and explaining why you should get tested at two points during your menstrual cycle for the most accurate diagnosis. There are also at-home tests you can order and supplements that can help to regulate your cycle. Dr. Lara talks about what the five different states of PCOS are and how the symptoms and causes of each differ. By far the most common state is through insulin resistance but there are other ways your body can develop this disorder. Finally, we talk about how you can treat certain symptoms of PCOS or HA without having an official diagnosis. Whether by diet, nutrition, and exercise, supplements, or other ways, there might be something you can do to reclaim your menstrual cycle. Did you have any years of menstrual cycling before you went on the pill? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode What the phrase “women are not small men” means What the difference between PCOS and Hypothalamic Amenorrhea is Why you should rule HA out before a PCOS diagnosis What the problems with an ultrasound PCOS diagnosis are What labs are relevant for a PCOS diagnosis Why you should get tested twice during your menstrual cycle What the different states of PCOS are How to treat certain symptoms without knowing your exact PCOS diagnosis Quotes “A lot of experts are calling for the ultrasound for Polycystic Ovary finding to be dumped, really, because it’s just not helpful.” (26:30) “You can always reverse out of PCOS. It’s reversible. That’s the symptom picture. Maybe not the genetic tendency, but the symptom picture is.” (48:23) “A lot of times the best approach to PCOS is still going to improve insulin sensitivity, it’s going to reduce inflammation, it’s going to help you detox from any birth control hormones.” (1:00:43) Links Buy the Period Repair Manual by Lara Briden MD! How I'm Responding To Racial Injustice
The dietetic field is not diverse when it comes to race or gender. My upbringing has not been diverse when it comes to race and economic class. In this episode of Fed and Fearless, I’m talking about educating myself about anti-racism and my mission to diversify dietetics. About This Episode I’ve always been outspoken about how dietetics pushes a white western diet on everyone, regardless of their ethnicity or race. But until recently, I hadn’t actually considered this a form of white supremacy. And while it’s what we’re taught, I don’t believe it’s the right approach to take with nutrition. Obviously racial disparity exists in the United States of America. My upbringing was one of privilege; I grew up in a fairly wealthy area of New Jersey where the only racial diversity were the Asians in my class. This lack of diversity continued on to college. Nutrition and dietetics is not an inexpensive education and this definitely contributes to the industry behind heavily white and female-dominated. This means that most of the colleagues that I’m close to and consider friends are other white women. But I’m making it part of my core values to diversify this podcast and platform. I’ve already invited some incredible Black guests to come on Fed and Fearless and I’m so excited to share these conversations. These guests are experts in their industries, which is why I’ve asked them to come on, and we’ll be talking about nutrition, not race. While I can honestly say I find listening to and watching the news causes a great deal of mental and physical fatigue for me, I also know that it’s important to educate myself. I would recommend watching the documentary 13TH for an examination of what’s going on in our prison system and Just Mercy, which is the true story to overturn the death sentence of an innocent man. I am not an expert when it comes to anti-racism, but I’m doing my part to educate myself and, in turn, educate you. It is possible to make the world a better place without compromising your core values. Black Lives Matter and standing against injustice is what Jesus would do. If you think there’s something I can be doing better, please let me know constructively what that is. My Instagram DMs are open, so please get in touch with me. In This Episode How white supremacy is present even in nutrition and dietetics Some documentaries you should watch to educate yourself on racial injustice in America Why the dietetics industry is heavily white and female-dominated How you can make the world a better place without compromising your core values How I’m diversifying the guests and conversations I have on Fed and Fearless Quotes “I want you all to feel empowered to do your own research and learn things for yourself. If you are Christian, know that you have the Holy Spirit to check things against and you can trust that. You don’t have to fall in line with what culture demands of you, even if it goes against your beliefs in what God says.” (45:11) “How we label ourselves and others is going to affect the actions that we take, the actions that they take, and the way that we treat each other.” (54:44) Links Donate to Laura Shoenfeld RD’s Fundraiser to Diversify Dietetics Documentaries 13TH on Netflix Just Mercy on Amazon Follow Steven Bartlett on Instagram Sign up for James Wedmore's Rise of the Digital CEO! Body Image Lies and Truths with Jessica Hottle
When you include God in your fitness life, journey, and career, you are honoring your body, soul, and spirit and surrounding yourself with love. I’m joined by Jessica Hottle to talk about why she includes God and worship as a fitness coach and how walking in His love has changed her life. About Jessica Hottle Jessica is a fitness motivator and coach, Jesus prescriber, and speaker. She doesn’t follow rules, restrictions, or religious duties. She’s about God first, freedom living, authenticity, and integrity. Jessica is a #1 best-selling author who’s written 3 books: Know Your Worth, A Worthy Wife, and Own Your Worth. Jessica doesn’t believe in following that Instagram rhetoric that emphasizes showing off your butt to get views and followers. Neither of us does this and yet we’re both successful within the fitness industry. It’s about changing the standard - and about reconciling our love with God. When Jessica accepted God as part of her fitness career and journey, her life completely changed. Having that relationship with God in every part of her life brought her into full loving alignment. For Jessica, the ultimate goal is in that living love space. There’s been a lot of talk lately about the importance of self-love. Don’t get us wrong, self-love is something you should be practicing. But Jessica explains how self-love can lead to self-sabotage and what you can do to avoid this. Jessica explains how she approaches life from a place of delight. Having a heart full of joy and love makes seeing the world and responding to situations easier to manage. Delight brings a feeling of lightness to you that will help determine your impact in the world. One of the biggest reasons I asked Jessica to come on the show is because of her relationship with God and fitness. Jessica says that you should dedicate your workouts to God and explains how you can do this. When you move your body, your spirit and soul move closer to God. What are the qualities of love that God defines? Are you operating out of those towards yourself and towards others? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! It always tells us to focus on the thoughts that we think, to renew our mind. I always tell women: It’s renew, reframe, and nurture. So you have to nurture the truth.” (23:13) “I want to see women set free from these lies. When I was set free, it feels really uncomfortable at first because the lie and the truth are always in opposition. So it’s always full of tension. But when we start to see and get a revelation of what God’s truth really is, that is transforming.” (49:31) Links Get all of Jessica Hottle's Freebies!! Listen to What’s The Truth? Macros Made Easy with Emily Field
Intuitive eating, ditching diets, tracking your food… everything seems like it’s so controversial these days. But it doesn’t have to be! I’m joined by Emily Field RD, who is an expert in macronutrition, to talk about how eating to your macros can completely change your approach to food and nutrition for the better. About Emily Field RD Emily teaches women to eat a balanced diet using a macros approach. This lets women break up with nonsense food rules (we all know those ones about eating after dark) and ditch depriving diets for good. First of all, Emily explains what macronutrients are and what role they have in your body. She explains how understanding macros helps you know how much fat, protein, and carbohydrates you need to eat for your unique body every day. Emily believes that when you’re focusing only on your macronutrients, you have more control over the food you’re eating. Eating to your macros means that pizza and chocolate are no longer off the menu, so long as they fit in your daily limits. She says that this approach to flexible dieting actually gives you more food freedom than any other way of dieting out there. In fact, eating to your macros can also increase your food confidence exponentially. How many times have you been eating something and had someone else comment on it? This approach to your diet will take away any question of whether they’re right or not because you’re eating what’s perfect for you. Emily says that many of the women she works with fall into that ‘all-or-nothing’ approach when it comes to dieting. But she explains how you don’t have to be eating to your macros perfectly in order to make good progress towards your goals. In fact, Emily says that when you first start eating to your macros, you’re probably not going to hit them at all - and that’s perfectly okay. Emily helps her clients understand how to set goals that aren’t dependent on the scale. Success isn’t about that number. Success can be how you’re feeling, how your body moves, how your health conditions have improved, and how your body looks. But there are some people who shouldn’t focus on a macronutrient approach to eating. Whether you are recovering from an eating disorder or you have an underlying health condition that needs more specific dietetic advice, this approach isn’t for everyone. But if you’re ready to dive right in, Emily has a free DIY Macro Guide you can read. Are you ready to ditch the diet and learn more about eating to your macros? Do you have any other questions about macronutrition? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode How macronutrients help you know how much fat, protein, and carbohydrates is right for you What the role of macros is in your daily diet How flexible dieting can help you lead to more food freedom and eating intuitively for your needs How eating to your macros can give you more confidence in what you’re eating Why you don’t have to panic if you’re not eating your macros perfectly Where you can measure success that isn’t on the scale Who shouldn’t track their macros Why you should limit who you’re getting your diet information from Quotes “My practice is built on the fact that I want to teach people the skill of tracking macros. It is a skill. It’s not a diet it’s not a program. It is a skill that you learn so that you can be in the power position to influence your body the way that you want.” (17:17) “You will find out very quickly if you’re tracking macros that you cannot fit pizza and Pop-Tarts and ice cream and all this stuff into your diet 100% of the time, but the fact that you can make friends with those foods and work them in when you want to is really powerful for a lot of people.” (26:41) “This is a tool to help you learn how much you need to eat to support your body, not a weight loss mechanism. If we can just shift that and move away from the end goal being the only reason you want to track macros, a lot of times that can remove the pressure that tracking macros is not going to work for you.” (30:15) Links Get your Free DIY Macro Guide! The Power of Overcoming An Eating Disorder with Sara Anna Powers
Becoming comfortable in investing in yourself is something many Christian women struggle with. You need to know that you are worthy of investment and riches and that God has actually designed you to achieve them. I’m joined by Sara Anna Powers, my own business coach, to talk about how she transitioned from an anorexic law student to a 6-figure entrepreneur. About Sara Anna Powers Sara Anna is a Success Coach and The Copy Couturier™ who works with motivated, dedicated, and faith-filled entrepreneurs who are ready to pursue their powerful purpose. Sara Anna tells us the story of how she transitioned from someone who struggled with anorexia to a successful 6-figure businesswoman. Sara Anna explains how it was actually some of the personality traits that made anorexia and binge eating a reality for her are the same ones that enable her to succeed in her business. She attributes much of her college experience to how her eating disorder developed and sustained. Sara Anna eventually reached out to her parents to get into rehab for her recovery. Sara Anna tells us about the transformation she experienced when she stopped being hyper-focused on what food she was eating all the time. And now that she’s not obsessively tracking everything, Sara Anna eats whatever she wants, especially when she knows it will fuel her body and give her the energy her body needs. For Sara Anna, it was when she completely reframed the reasons she was following a healthier lifestyle and exercise routine that her life shifted. By realizing that she was doing it for a healthier body and to feel and perform her best, she freed herself from the obsession that comes with what you look like. One of the aspects of training Sara Anna changed was the frequency and duration of how much she was exercising. She was exercising hard at the gym for two hours a time, nearly every day. But by scaling that back, Sara Anna has discovered all the life that’s out there waiting for her outside the gym. Sara Anna is a Christian woman who is no stranger to investing in herself. Starting with her eating disorder recovery, then investing thousands of dollars in coaching for the first iteration of her online business, to now where she is working with high-level business coaches. Sara Anna believes that Christian women can be rich in all areas of their lives, including their bank accounts. This is one of the reasons she encourages women to invest in themselves. Each investment has made Sara Anna reach a higher level so she can serve more faith-based women better than before. The Mindset of a Successful Entrepreneur with James Wedmore
Don’t let the fear of success hold you back from showing up exactly as who you really are in business. I’m joined by my coach, James Wedmore, to talk about how to make more sales by doing what you do best: connecting with and educating your nutrition clients. About James Wedmore James Wedmore is an introvert from Laguna Beach, CA who has spent the past 8 years teaching online entrepreneurs how to leverage the power of online video and YouTube with such courses and programs like Video Traffic Academy and 48Hr Film School. Starting in 2016, he made a massive shift to focus on a big gap that he saw missing in the marketplace: The Mindset of Entrepreneurs. He launched a podcast (Mind Your Business) and a new flagship program (Business By Design) to help other content creators, authors, and coaches thrive online. On this podcast, James explains why you should show up exactly as you are in order to form the best connections with your audience. He also encourages you to be more confident with who you are in your business marketing. Your business is a direct reflection of you. James works with entrepreneurs to help them scale their businesses to multiple 6 and 7 figure businesses. But he encourages us all not to think of our business in terms of the money we’re bringing in, because money isn’t an indication of success. Money is an indication of how many people you’re helping. We talk about what the most valuable business skills are and how you can market your business so it’s not sleazy. This, according to James, cannot happen because marketing is the tool you’re using to sell your products. James encourages you to reframe your approach to marketing. James also talks about some of the psychological reasons why your nutrition customers and clients are reluctant to make the changes we recommend to them. It can be not only scary to make a change, but it can also be painful as well. That’s one of the reasons James is passionate about every person seeking out mentors and guides to show us what we don’t already know. Some of the other amazing things we talk about in this episode are why you truly need to choose a niche for your business. When you become a leading expert in your industry, you’re going to make more sales. Lastly, James explains how you can market your group products by talking to only one person in your approach. What’s stopping you from taking action? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode What your business is a reflection of What money is actually an indicator of What the most valuable skills in business are Why you should reframe your approach to marketing Why your customers are reluctant to change Why we all need mentors and guides to show us what we don’t know How niching down your market will generate more sales How to market your group products by talking to one person Quotes “This whole concept that where you are right now in your life, even if it’s somewhere you don’t like, what if where you are is exactly where you need to be because it’s preparing you for what you want?” (9:52) “The more we begin to understand where our audience is at a core deep level, and what will motivate them to change, the more we’re able to help them. If you’re unwilling to do that, that’s where you’re being slimy.” (28:07) “Business isn’t always easy, but it can be simple.” (42:09) Links Find James Wedmore Online Follow James Wedmore on Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | Apple Podcasts Learn more about business coaching with me Find Fed and Fearless Online Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show?
