An Abundance Approach to PCOS with Jillian Greaves, RD
Key Takeaways Treating the symptoms of PCOS through deprivation, elimination, and hard exercise will likely lead to more problems. Stress and PCOS go hand in hand. If you’re stressed about what you’re eating and how you’re exercising, that could make things even worse. When you understand that you’re in control you can take positive actions to address your symptoms. Sometimes what we are taught are healthy habits are doing us harm. This is especially the case for women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In fact, I’ve seen a lot of women cause worsening symptoms by over-exercising, eating the wrong way, and just being too hard on themselves. Today’s guest is reshaping the narrative of how to live abundantly with PCOS. About Jillian Greaves Jillian Greaves is the Registered Dietitian and food lover behind Prevention Pantry. Her background includes a strong foundation in nutritional science, advanced training in integrative and functional medicine, and a deep understanding of the relationship between food, body, and mind. She combines evidence-based, medical nutrition therapy with mindful eating and traditional foods to help individuals of all ages increase their energy, balance hormones, and improve digestion. Jillian is passionate about women’s health and empowering clients with PCOS to discover what their bodies need through a personalized and holistic approach towards nutrition. Abundance, not deprivation Today, Jillian and I are taking a hard look at what it takes to resolve PCOS symptoms. Many women focus heavily on elimination. However, restricting what we eat often won’t lead to the results we want and just cause added stress. Jillian likes to turn this approach upside down by focusing on nourishment, personalized nutrition, joyful movement, and generally enhancing someone’s life. A New Mindful Approach Jillian helps her patients shift away from super-strict approaches to eating. While diet is still a big part of dealing with PCOS, it can be taken too far. In fact, stressing about what you eat can just make things worse. Jillian helps women take a mindful approach to eating so they can find joy in it while still treating their bodies well. Not every tool, approach, or therapy is going to be appropriate.” [15:56] “There’s a nice balance to be found where you get joy out of your food but you’re also making it a mindful experience.” [31:57] “We can’t treat every bit of information like an emotionally-charged diet. Genetics, lifestyle, culture, and many other factors are all part of the complex picture of an individual. Technological changes are inevitable. It will change not only how we interact with clients, but also how they receive services. Just because we were trained one way, does not mean we should stay static. It is the responsibility of each clinician to adapt to these changes. It’s easy to think that technology is harming us. This is true in many ways. But technology can also improve our health. It’s not just DNA technology that’s helping. Common things like cell phones and apps have the potential to make us all healthier. When appropriately used, modern technology can help anyone reach their personalized nutritional goals. About Mariëtte Abrahams Mariëtte Abrahams is a registered dietitian with a Ph.D. and an MBA. Now she is passionate about focusing on prevention and helping individuals to improve their health through data and knowledge. What is personalized nutrition? Personalized nutrition is a developing field. By leveraging individual-specific information, founded in evidence-based science, diet and behavioral changes can be promoted. The Role of Technology and Nutrition This approach goes hand in hand with new technology. Implementing new behaviors is hard. Mariëtte has discovered that technology helps make it easier. By improving communication, finding the right tests, and tracking new behaviors, it is easier than ever. Like it or not, technology is here to stay. Building Resilience through Chronic Illness with Allyn Amerongen
Key Takeaways Even when dealing with a chronic illness, focusing on what you still can do, rather than what you can’t, is essential. It is the bedrock of positivity that opens up all your possibilities. In fact, when you realize what you’re still capable of, despite the pain, you’ll realize that you are stronger than ever. It sounds hard to believe, but chronic pain and illness can actually become your superpower. With a certain mindset, it can lead to more enjoyment and resilience in life than you might otherwise have. Today’s guest learned this lesson herself and is on a mission to share it with others. About Allyn Amerongen Allyn Amerongen is an Oregon native whose history of chronic pain and illness has shaped her beliefs, actions, and most importantly, her mindset. As an active member in the personal development community, Allyn utilizes her unique toolkit to work with clients and help them achieve the life they envision for themselves. Having the Attitude to Overcome Pain Aside from the illness itself, dealing with its emotional toll is demanding. Having done it herself, Allyn helps others focus on joy when all else seems bleak. When you prioritize thinking about what you can do, instead of what you can’t, you’ll realize the true heights of your capabilities. Fear and Faith in a Journey of Healing Even if you’re not dealing with a chronic illness, Allyn has lessons that apply to everyone. She understands fear. She also understands how it limits potential like nothing else. Being afraid to look bad, or to fail, or to disappoint, prevents many from even starting. Allyn has come to know that just trying can be counted as a success. The fact of the matter is that you are not defined by your illness. Taking the time to do what you need spiritually and emotionally will reinforce that idea. It’s a reminder that you can still live on your own terms. Has chronic illness forced you to shift your mindset? Tell me about it in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode Lessons learned from a lifetime of chronic pain [3:33] Mindset adjustments to create a joyful life amidst pain [8:45] The most important mindset changes to make when confronted with a life of pain [11:20] How adversity leads to resiliency and perspective [15:10] Overcoming fear in order to pursue your true goals [19:45] Taking control of your life back from a chronic illness with mindset and breathing [25:00] The role of faith in a journey of healing [32:10] Quotes “If anyone is going through a chronic illness, it’s going to shape you in some way, shape, or form. When you’re going through it at a younger age as well, you’re trying to figure out who you are as a person.” [6:06] “The perspective that you carry will dictate the success in treating the illness, but also the level of happiness and joy that you have in your life.” [10:48] “I felt all the puzzle pieces coming together and it totally was making sense to me why I had gone through this and was going through this.” [37:29] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! How Thyroid Health Affects Your Fertility with Jennifer Zucconi, RD
Key Takeaways A diagnosis of infertility doesn’t mean it’s the end. There is so much that you can still do to help you conceive. Hold on to hope. Many approaches to infertility focus on IVF. But there are other routes to take too. Nutrition has a huge role to play. So does the thyroid gland. Getting the right information through the right labwork will help you address the root causes of infertility. Positivity is hard to find while working through the challenges of infertility. It doesn’t have to be that way. Hope and joy can be a central part of the process. You just need to be equipped with the right information. Today’s guest is on a mission to help her clients find what they need as they grow their families. About Jennifer Zucconi Jennifer Zucconi is a registered dietitian trained in functional and integrative nutrition. She helps women with hypothyroidism and “unexplained” infertility use the healing powers of food and lifestyle to optimize their hormones and nourishes their pre-pregnancy health so they can bring new life into their families. After decades of her own misdiagnoses, struggles with infertility, medications that didn’t “fix” her problems, and multiple surgeries, Jennifer found a completely new way to heal. That’s what fuels her passion today as she helps couples get to the root cause of their infertility, so they can transform their dreams about parenthood into the joyful reality of expecting. Nourishment is the Key to Fertility Too often, people find themselves frustrated and dejected even after following every doctor’s recommendations. Jennifer takes the unique approach of focusing on nutrition as the next step. By focusing on nourishing the whole body, overall well-being will naturally improve. This includes fertility. Nourishment involves more than just what you eat. Your relationships, emotions, mind, and body all require nourishing. The Thyroid and Fertility Central to Jennifer‘s approach is the thyroid. Despite often being overlooked, this gland plays a crucial role in regulating much of the body. When the thyroid is unable to do its job, other systems in the body are going to shut down, particularly the reproductive system. Getting the right lab work will help identify potential hormonal issues so you’ll have the right information to address infertility at its root cause. How can you nourish your whole self to address fertility? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode Jennifers’ discovery that “unexplained” means that you need to keep looking for answers [6:45] Why an infertility diagnosis is not necessarily final [13:05] The link between nourishment and fertility [15:11] Thyroid health as a key fertility factor [24:56] The best labs to explain unexplained infertility [35:10] Where to find the resources and support you need on your fertility journey [52:42] Quotes “Let’s go backward before we go forward. Because if you have some of these problems, those forward moving things aren’t going to work because we haven’t answered these foundational things first.” [11:10] “Let’s take a step back. Instead of focusing on one little area of your body, or even just the end of your fork, let’s look at you as a whole.” [17:44 “When something is wrong or not working or not communicating like it should, we got to ask why.” [37:57] “Any stress we can take off of the body so it can divert its energy to the right things, in this case, a new life, the better.” [42:13] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! How To Set Your Hourly Rate As A Nutritionist
Nutritionists get into this line of work to help people, not for a love of money. But money is still an important part of your business. If you’re a nutritionist with your own business or want to be, I’m sharing some of what I’ve learned about the topic of nutrition and setting your prices. About Price Setting Many of us get stuck on the idea that you should charge what you’re worth. This is ultimately a trap. “Charging what you’re worth” is a meaningless statement. This line of thinking will cause you to either undercharge your clients or work yourself into the ground. You’re a healthcare provider. You can’t set up a pricing structure that forces you to sacrifice your own wellbeing in the name of your business. Creating the Right Offers An essential part of your price structure relies on your offers. I’ve identified eight elements to creating an irresistible offer for any potential client. These are person, problem, potential, package, price, perks, pressure, and promise. Understanding the prices that you need to be charging to effectively run your business is a key part of how you build out everything else. Crunching Numbers to Determine Your Rates There’s a lot to consider when setting your prices. Your annual earning goal, what your services are worth to your ideal client, and the cost of alternatives are all important factors. Perhaps most importantly, you should be thinking more about what you want to earn than what a client might be willing to pay. As a business owner, you have the privilege of choosing your own hourly rate. By following along with this worksheet, you can determine what you need to charge to achieve your revenue goals. Once you take all your regular expenses into account, you can add those to your personal expenses. Add these to your financial desires, factor in income tax and how much you actually want to work, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what you need to earn. How do you determine the worth of what you offer your clients? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode The myth of charging according to your worth [3:00] The eight Ps of an irresistible offer [8:50] The most important considerations behind how you set your prices [10:12] How to set your own hourly rate [15:18] The difference between working in your business and working on your business [31:20] Steps for bringing in the clients that will pay the price you set [40:00] Quotes “Being healthy is incredibly valuable to your business and your clients. Practicing what you preach as a healthcare provider is incredibly important to be working in integrity in your business.” [4:26] “Feeling great and taking care of your needs allows you to take care of your clients better.” [20:14] “Starting and growing a business is way more than just figuring out what your prices are.” [41:11] Key Takeaways When you charge what your services are worth, rather than what you feel you’re worth, both you and your clients will benefit. In the end, you’ll serve your clients best if you’re making the right amount of money. As a nutritionist, you have the power to completely change someone’s life for the better. There is a huge value in that. Don’t undersell what you do. If charging a lot doesn’t feel right, just remember the value that your clients will get in the end. The most important part of the equation isn’t the price itself. It’s creating a business that serves your clients on such a level that the prices you set become easy to ask for. All About Fertility Awareness with Lisa Hendrickson-Jack
Sadly, few women understand how their cycle actually works. With the lack of discussion and education, this is not surprising. In fact, we’re often taught to just ignore our cycles even when something's clearly wrong. My guest today makes it her mission to reconnect women with their cycle and its role as an indicator of your health. About Lisa Hendrickson-Jack Lisa Hendrickson-Jack is a certified Fertility Awareness Educator and Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner. She teaches women to chart their menstrual cycles for natural birth control, conception and monitoring of overall health. In her new book The Fifth Vital Sign, Lisa debunks the myth that regular ovulation is only important when you want children by recognizing the menstrual cycle as a vital sign. Drawing heavily from current scientific literature, Lisa presents an evidence-based approach to fertility awareness and menstrual cycle optimization. She hosts the Fertility Friday Podcast, a weekly radio show devoted to helping women connect to their fifth vital sign by uncovering the connection between menstrual cycle health, fertility, and overall health. Your Menstrual Cycle as an Important Indicator of Your Health More and more experts are recognizing that the menstrual cycle is a vital indicator of a woman’s health. Unfortunately, we are often taught to ignore irregularities in our cycles. The birth control pill is a large part of this as it suppresses ovulation and regular menstruation. In fact, there are numerous risks of hormonal birth control. This includes depression, anxiety, and nutrient deficiencies. Taking Control with Fertility Awareness To truly take control of your menstrual health and fertility, Lisa recommends fertility awareness. Many of us are taught to believe that we can get pregnant every single day of the menstrual cycle. That’s simply not true. In fact, it’s more like just six days. Understanding the signs of that window can empower women to take control of their fertility without the need of other potentially harmful methods. This requires close and deliberate observation of signs of fertility. With this observation comes a better understanding of your overall health and wellness. What can you do to take control of your fertility? Leave a comment on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode Discovering fertility awareness and the changes that follow [4:10] Why the menstrual cycle is an important indicator of overall health [7:38] The important distinction between menstruation and ovulation [9:45] Common risks of hormonal birth control [13:55] The role of properly educating yourself in order to make informed healthy decisions [31:00] Using the fertility awareness method to help become pregnant or as contraception [33:19] The benefits of fertility awareness beyond its use in fertility and contraception [40:20] Quotes “I discovered that I wasn’t fertile every single day….It really changed the way I looked at everything It made me realize that what I’d been taught about my cycle has nothing to do with how my body actually works.” [5:13] “We need to do what we can based on what we know. And when we know more, we can do more; we have other options.” [31:24] “The basis for fertility awareness is essentially understanding that there is a fertile window.” [35:29] “Understanding and knowing how your body works is independent of sexual activity. There’s inherent benefits in just knowing that.” [42:23] “We have this incredible biomarker. We don’t have to excessively chart it but we need to be aware of it.” [51:07] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! Hormone Health After 40 with Maria Claps
Few people discuss what happens to your hormones after menopause. In fact, there seems to be a lot of secrecy among women in this stage of life about their hormonal health. That’s why I’m so excited to have Maria Claps with me today to shed light on this important topic. About Maria Claps Maria Claps is a certified health coach, Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, and mom to four grown boys. After receiving inadequate healthcare that did nothing to address her perimenopause problems, Maria enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) in order to get the help she sought. After that, Maria pursued several hormone-centric training including Dr. Sara Gottfried's practitioner hormone training program, the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition program. Her mentors include hormone scholar and scientist Dr. Lindsey Berkson. Maria helps women all over the world as a perimenopause and menopause mentor. She is a DUTCH hormone test expert. She also teaches practitioners how to help midlife women thrive in her mentorship program Midlife Hormone Mastery. When she’s not working with clients, Maria can be found trekking through Italy, at farmers’ markets locally, or in the kitchen creating recipes. Hormonal Changes Don’t Mean the End of Your Lifestyle Maria shares how her experience sent her on a quest to better understand the signs and symptoms of perimenopause. Insomnia, weight gain, and unstable moods led her to solutions that few others in the health field were discussing. Over the years, Maria has discovered the truth that lies behind many common menopause myths. In reality, you don’t have to accept all the changes. Maria explains that hormonal changes are not necessarily the same thing as aging. By recognizing that the way you feel now is a symptom, not the root of the problem, you can take informed actions. Much of the way people think of menopause is very negative. Maria explains how cultural expectations of older women derive from a false narrative. Sadly, this has led to a culture of silence around the topic. Maria works to help women open up about their experiences. When this happens, women can take action and regain control over their lives. Maria stresses that living a healthy lifestyle will help ease your transition through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. Diet and nutrition, as well as exercise, go a long way. That being said, there is no guarantee that it will still go smoothly. Many of Maria’s clients do this and still struggle. It can be scary to experience these changes in your body. There is a sense of loss of control when you don’t fully understand how these changes affect you. That’s why Maria stresses the role of education. When you understand your body well, you know what is normal, what isn’t, and what you can do about it. Understanding Your Hormones Before, During, and After Menopause Hormone testing, particularly the DUTCH Test, is a major tool Maria employs. It gives a complete picture of what the hormones are doing and how they are changing. Maria has seen the value of these tests to highlight potential problems and establish healthy regimens for her clients. What can you start doing today to prepare for menopause? Exploring Traditional Diets with Hilda Labrada Gore
We can learn so much about our spiritual and physical health from other cultures. I’m joined by Hilda Labrada Gore, host of Wise Traditions, to talk about how her health and ministry work has taken her to different parts of the world to learn about different culture’s ancient practices. About Hilda Labrada Gore Hilda Labrada Gore is committed to finding keys for maintaining and boosting health and sharing everything she learns with you! She has traveled the world exploring traditional practices for optimal well-being. From Kenya to Peru to Australia to Cuba, she has uncovered ancient practices all over the globe that we can easily incorporate into our lives today. Hilda is the host of Wise Traditions, a podcast launched in 2016 that has over 3 MILLION downloads to date! It's a wealth of information on food, farming, and the healing arts. Hilda hosts and produces the show for the Weston A. Price Foundation. Topics covered include everything from sustainable farming to Alzheimer's to gut healing to the Wise Traditions diet to natural childbirth! About This Episode Hilda joins me today to talk about how her relationship with God has influenced so many decisions in her life. Being born with a heart defect, Hilda always made sure she was careful when it came to exercise. She shares how she came to understand God in her life and that in order to be wholly healthy, you need to look after your spiritual health as well as your physical. Hilda’s involvement with ministry and her background in health led her to travel the world helping other cultures return to their roots. She discovered during her travels how important it is for people to eat the food that’s native and natural to your culture. We talk about how food displacement and overconsumption of processed food has led to an overall decline in health - everywhere. Hilda says that we should always do our best to eat natural and whole foods as these fuel our bodies the best: the way God intended. Another aspect of health that’s so important for Hilda is getting outside every day. Her favorite time of day is within half an hour of when the sun comes up. This time is perfect for getting daily Vitamin D; it also gives you a chance to experience quiet time for deep listening, which she learned about during one of her trips to Australia. What whole foods do you incorporate in your diet every day? How have you learned more about your relationship with God by exploring other cultures? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! It’s also the food that we take in and our community.” (9:29) “It wasn’t just that other culture’s own health was compromised or that these people would get more cavities or sicker easier, but it’s that the subsequent generations became more ill, too.” (27:58) “There are only so many hours in the day: do we take time to stop and do some deep listening? For me, I have to say, the morning is one of those times.” (51:40) Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! Reframing Rejection with Darryll Stinson
Stepping past rejection and into a life aligned with God, passion, and purpose is a story so many of us can relate to. I’m joined by Darryll Stinson, entrepreneur, pastor, and speaker, to talk about how a childhood full of rejection fuelled him to become who he is now. About Darryll Stinson Darryll Stinson helps outcasts, forgotten athletes, and the down-and-outs turn their rejections into success. He’s an entrepreneur, pastor, speaker, and most importantly a suicide survivor. Darryll played defensive end at Central Michigan University from 2008-2011. He attempted to take his life in 2011 due to a severe career-ending back injury. Through a life-changing experience at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI, Darryll got a second chance and came to believe that his life mattered. He began the arduous journey of discovering what his identity and purpose was beyond sports. After years of research, meditation, workshops, and cross-examination, Darryll found his identity and purpose and began to help others do the same. Darryll is the founder of Second Chance Athletes, a holistic athletic transition service for current, former, and forgotten athletes. He’s an executive pastor of Growth Ministries at Life Church International in Duluth, GA, where he oversees guest experience, small groups, and community outreach. He also partners with Fellowship of Christian Athletes to help athletes better their character, faith, and athletic performance. About This Episode Darryll shares his incredible life story that all centers on rejection. When he was a child, white students accepted him, but when he tried to connect to his Black peers, he faced rejection. This rejection caused Darryll to embrace all sorts of behaviors that weren’t aligned with his truth and, as such, he lost that connection with himself. Darryll explains how he never dealt with these rejections when he was a kid, instead of pushing himself into sports because that’s where he felt he could be the best version of himself. But when an injury took him off the field, he spiraled into a deep depression that culminated in a suicide attempt. This is one of the biggest reasons Darryll encourages you to process any rejections you get when you get them so you don’t let them stew and build up to be even bigger than they initially were. What Darryll realized was that his life could look successful on the outside, but inside, he was miserable. He was an opioid addict, sold drugs to pay for them, and lived a life that was completely out of alignment with who he was. When Darryll was in the hospital, he felt called to turn to God. Once he accepted this calling, his entire life transformed. As a business mentor, the best advice, for both business and life, Darryll gives is to identify your next yes. Figure out what the next positive step in your life is and how you can do that. He explains why this is the best way to move forward with your life. Darryll also gives some practical mindset shifts that you can start making today to become a successful entrepreneur. When you raise your vibration and think on a higher level, you’re indicating to God that you’re open and willing to go where He wants you to. One of these mindset shifts is to start telling yourself a new story. If you’ve always thought you were not good at something, of course, you’re not good at it! Those thoughts become your reality. Start believing that you ARE good at something and new possibilities will open up for you. Darryll explains the difference between passion and purpose. He shares what his passion is and how this differs from the purpose of his life. We talk about what happens when you figure out your passion and purpose and how you can measure the steps you take by whether or not they’re aligned. What is the one decision you need to make to move your life forward? What’s the one yes you need to make to build your future? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here! In This Episode What different types of rejection exist Why you need to process your rejection as it happens and not to let it sit and stew How you can be successful on the outside, but miserable on the inside How your life can transform in an instant when you embrace God Why you should identify your next yes Some essential mindset shifts you need to make to be a successful entrepreneur Why you should tell yourself a new story to change your life What the difference between passion and purpose is Quotes “Rejection, if you do not know how to properly manage it in your life, will push you further into depression, will push you into self-sabotage, will push you into more loss of identity. The time to process rejection is when it first happens. Don’t let it dwell.” (10:47) “Really it’s not about the task that you have to do, it’s about the decision that you need to make. That’s what I call your ‘next yes.’” (25:43) “Your thought life determines your decisions which determines your results.” (33:11) “It does not matter what your job is, just be the best version of you. Give all of you to the world. All of your love, all of your joy, all of your compassion. All of your uniqueness because the world deserves you.” (51:33) Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts!
