Being a POC Survivor with Patrice of @survivorsofcolor - Ep. 31

TW: sexual violence, sexual assault, body negative abuse (regarding weight/size), rape, relational abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, PTSD, trauma, racial violence, micro aggression/racism, triggers This week I chat with the incredible Patrice O’Garro (she/her) of @survivorsofcolor . It was so wonderfully soul-filling to chat with Patrice and hear her passion for the survivor community. Within the episode Patrice and I chat about her experience with assault & a specific tattoo she has that is associated with her assaulter. As a community, I am asking us, her fellow survivors, to show up. I want us to cover the financial cost of covering up that triggering tattoo. Her cash app is: $pchavon . If you listen, I am sure that you will share the adoration I have for her and for her gentle heart. Thank you in advance for showing up for her. In addition, I highly recommend following her platform, @survivorsofcolor . She has created a platform with the sole intention of making a safe haven for POC survivors who are healing. If you are white, you are welcome to learn and heal too!  Please rate us 5 stars and leave us a review! You can find all things Mindful Minds here. You can buy our sticker collection here. The Body Keeps The Score Breakdown - Part 3 - Ep. 30

Podcast TW: PTSD, trauma, sexual abuse, sexual assault, childhood abuse, depression, addictionBook TW: PTSD, trauma, self-harm (p. 266), sexual abuse/assault (specific explicit recollection on page 259-261), childhood abuse, molestation/incest, relational abuse, war trauma, violence, death, addictionThis week I will be breaking down the final part, Part 5, of The Body Keeps The Score By Bessel Van Der Kolk, which centers on treatments (pages 205-358). If you haven’t felt comfortable reading this book/feel it may be too triggering for you, I would highly suggest reading part 5. This part centers on treatment and hope. It gives a lot of beneficial resources and scientific evidence behind methods of treatment and the pathway to recovery. This chapter does include stories of violence and trauma, so beware. I have included page numbers above of especially graphic depictions of trauma. Link: https://www.besselvanderkolk.comDisclaimer: I did not write this book nor am I claiming these ideas as my own. This book was written by Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk & is entirely his. I am breaking it down because of the sheer density of the material. I feel like I am in a space where I have the emotional and mental capacity to read this, but I wish I had the information inside earlier – I just didn’t have the space to consume it yet. So I am hoping that my breaking down the material will help others gain the knowledge without having to expel as much energy. I will be quoting Van Der Kolk but will make it clear when I do so. I will also be linking the link to purchase the book – and I highly suggest you do. As much as I will be reviewing the highlights, there is so much I won’t be able to cover that is so beneficial for trauma survivors. This book is truly the Bible for trauma recovery. This book is very very in depth. It reads like a textbook. It also has no trigger warnings, nor does it warn the reader when things like rape or violence will be described. If that is something that is triggering for you, I would be careful about reading it firsthand. Please rate us 5 stars and leave us a review! You can find all things Mindful Minds here. What is CPTSD? with Sara Aird of @breakingdowncptsd - Ep. 27

TW: PTSD/CPTSD, Trauma, SA, religious trauma, abuse, childhood abuse, abusive relationship, shameThis week we have Sara Aird (she/her) of @breakingdowncptsd to have a very authentic and empathetic conversation about CPTSD and trauma. So much of this conversation was so affirming for me and for my inner child to hear, and I hope it is the same for you. Sara has so much wonderful insight into CPTSD that is so incredibly validating as a CPTSD survivor to hear. If you would like to learn more about Sara and her work, which I would highly suggest, you can follow her on IG @breakingdownCPTSD for daily posts & topical guides & visit her website https://www.saraaird.com/ . On her IG, she has an IG live practice called Healing Tools Together with body based tools for trauma recovery! On her website you can donate to Sara and her work, visit her Etsy Survivor Shop: One Wild Life (https://www.saraaird.com/owlsurvivorshop), learn more/sign up for her Recovery Mentorships for women, read her blog, and read through her various publications! We also chat about a few books that Sara has said has helped her through her trauma journey. Those are The Body Keeps Score, by Bessel Van Der Kolk & Complex PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving by Pete Walker. I also mention my master document of mental health resources and coping mechanisms/worksheets. The Queer Experience at a Homophobic Christian University with Jubilee Ramirez - Ep. 24

TW: homophobia, discrimination, purity culture, religious trauma , depression/mental healthThis week we have my dear friend, Jubilee Ramirez (she/they) (@jubileejaira), on to chat about their experience as a closeted queer person attending a homophobic Christian college. Her experience is definitely unique, but also very relatable to many other individuals in the queer community who have experienced blunt homophobia, shame, and discrimination for simply wanting to be themselves. As much as this episode may only be relatable to a specific group of people, I am hoping that this episode also sheds light on how toxic these universities are and empowers others to hold them accountable. We also speak about a few resources throughout the episode. One being the movie/project, 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture, which shares some amazing resources about the fact that the word "homosexual" was never actually in the Bible, and therefore begins to tear down the idea that being queer is a Biblical sin. You can find more info here. The other being an organization called REAP (Religious Exemption Accountability Project) which "empowers queer, trans and non-binary students at more than 200 taxpayer-funded religious schools that actively discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression" & is actively working on a lawsuit to eradicate/amend the policies that allow private religious schools to discriminate in the ways they do. You can donate to them/get involved here.Lastly, another resource that may be helpful is the Netflix documentary, Pray Away. This documentary focuses on survivors from the conversion therapy movement, and may be very triggering to some queer individuals, so please watch at your own risk. Self-Like: My Eating Disorder Journey - Ep. 23

TW: eating disorders, diet culture, fatphobia, body dysmorphia, trauma, depression, sexual assault,  abusive relationshipsThis week I share my personal eating disorder journey. This episode will be the last of the trio of ED episodes. I talk about this in the episode, but this episode was especially challenging for me to record. Unlike my other “journey” episodes, this is a journey that is more active in my life than past traumas, so being vulnerable about it in real-time was a lot for me. I want to include the disclaimer that my story is my story. I am not a ED therapist or an expert, I am simply sharing my personal journey. I would highly recommend listening to Episode 20 with @thrive_withmeg, or Episode 22 with @diet_dont_work_haes, for the perspective of an ED therapist and someone who has struggled with eating disorders for 50+ years. If you are struggling with an eating disorder and feel that you are not worth seeking help or are not sick enough to seek help, please know that you are worthy of help and recovery and your feelings and struggles are valid. You can seek help at the NEDA hotline (800) 931-2237 / https://www.nationaleatingdisorders.org . You can also search for an ED therapist online at psychologytoday.com & inclusivetherapists.com . Body positive accounts to follow: @thebodyisnotanapology@fatwomenofcolor@nalgonapositivitypride@thebirdspapaya@bodypositivefitness_@funkychunkyy@jessicajadeyoga@sonyareneetaylorPlease rate us 5 stars and leave us a review!
