Testimonial from Rayne @ 00:26:10I had a break through and wanted to say thank you! After listening to your pod cast I was inspired to get my act together. I've been transitioning to a lower carb eating style with increased fats and moderate protein. It's been going well - lost some weight and body fat %. I'm a relatively large guy, 6'2", 230 lbs, with approx 15%bf. But the true trial came this weekend when I ran the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim. it's 48 miles and 11000 feet of climbing. I've been running ultras for a number of years and have always used "hammer nutrition" products and consumed around 2-300 calories per hour. For this run I tried something I had never used before (Cardinal sin, I know) I used Ucan super starch, Vespa and a couple of Nut butter packets. I Felt Amazing the entire way. I began to feel sleepy in the final miles so I busted out some sport jelly beans that I had held in reserve and the glucose and caffeine woke me up and I flew out of the Canyon with a total run time of just over 13 hours. For the entire day I consumed just under 200 grams of carbs and approx 88 calories per hour! I never thought that it was possible. Thanks again for your insight and inspiration. Natural UTI Remedies Craig says @ 00:29:53He has a friend who is in her mid-70s who struggles with Urinary Tract Infections. She has tried all the stuff the docs suggested but they still come back. Do you have any ideas? In my response to Craig, I mention the SexyBack Summit by Christa Orecchio and also the d-Mannose supplement and Uva Ursi herb. How To Detox Your Liver Kristopher says @ 00:35:40 Is currently rather healthy (and an ultra runner) but was a chronic hard drug abuser in the past. He just went through a WellnessFX Performanceblood test and everything looks ok (except for elevated ALT, Liver Enzymes). Is there something specific he should be looking for or at? Is there a cleanse or detox he should use to minimize or heal the damage he has done to himself. In my reply, I mention the following: -Liposomal Glutathione -Chlorella from RecoveryBits (use 10% discount code BEN) -Activated Charcoal -Full Spectrum Antioxidant like Lifeshotz -Capracleanse Can you drink BulletProof Coffee every day? Allie says @ 00:52:12 Do you think it is a good idea to use Bulletproof Coffeeeveryday or should you take a few days off per week and save it for "big days"? Six Ways To Deal With Anxiety Michael says @ 00:58:34What would you recommend for someone with a General Anxiety Disorder and resulting chronic/adrenal fatigue. He is looking for a more natural approach to treating his disorder. He's been on meds and has weened himself off. Then he tried some natural remedies like valarian, st. john's wort, and 5-htp. They've been working pretty well but he is still feeling fatigued. He is looking for supplements, lifestyle advice, or other remedies. In my response to Michael, I recommend: -FiveMinuteJournal -The HeartMath Institute -DirectLabs NeuroAdrenal Expanded test -PassionFlower extract -Travacor by Nutriscience -The Kalish Method book Brock also mentions: Taming Your Gremlin: A Guide to Enjoying Yourself and When Perfect Isn't Good Enough: Strategies for Coping with Perfectionism. Proven Ways To Fix Muscle Cramps Christopher says @ 01:13:13He recently lost a lot of weight, started eating paleo and started racing Ironman. Since then he has been getting a lot of cramps in calves, hamstrings and thighs. Not necessarily while training or racing but when he is asleep. If he flexes his calf hard enough he can cause it to cramp whenever he wants. Is there something he could add into his diet to help? Could it be dehydration? In my response to Christopher, I mention the article on muscle cramps and I mention Natural Calm Magnesium. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. Testimonial from Chris @ 00:18:28In a period of 6 months every major aspect of my life - professional, personal and mental - hit complete failure. In a dark place, in incredibly bad health, recovering from a second lower spine surgery, scrambling after my startup company closed shop, spiraling from an incredibly bad (like Manti T'eo meets Catfish bad) relationship breakup, following a two week whiskey bender in Vegas, my older brother (Michael) answered my social network plea to help me hit the life reset button. Together we trained for and finished our first 70.3 triathlon in only 90 days. In the process I'm now in the best shape of my life and have achieved a new level of mental clarity and drive. My 70.3 race goals (in decreasing order) were to 1) finish the half-ironman 2) finish under 6:00:00 maximum 3) finish under 5:45:00 stretch 4) do not walk during the run leg 5) leave with a desire to continue training in endurance multi sports and 6) beat my brother -he beat me in both of our tune-up olympic distance triathlons. Is Alkaline Water A Scam? BodyChem says @ 00:22:30Kangen Water "a means of delivering alkaline water to your body". Is this a good thing to do for as source of hydration all the time or just now and then? ADHD Diet for Kids Breakfast says @ 00:30:51She has a 10-year-old son that will not eat breakfast. He is on an ADHD medication so he really needs to eat a breakfast with protein in it. Would you recommend a protein powder smoothie for breakfast? She read that Coronation Instant Breakfast was a good thing to give him (due to the vitamins and minerals). She doesn't want to give that to him but she does want to get some protein in with the meds. Losing weight after adrenal fatigue Fatloss says @ 00:40:59 Recovering from adrenal fatigue and wants to lose the 10lbs he put on while recovering. What would be the best way to lose the weight without risking a relapse? ~ In my response, I mention the CoolFatBurner.com vest and Focal furniture website. What is the best biohacking device? Jen says @ 00:50:20 She has a birthday coming up next month and wants to ask for a biohacking tool or electronic. What would be the best one be for the money that will tell her the most information? She does half and full marathons but mostly just goes to the gym and does group exercise classes. She already has a Garmin and a HR Monitor. ~ In my response, I mention the Azumio Argus + LifeTrak device OR the Zensorium Tinke OR the FitBit. We also mention the MindAlive therapy device. How to test your electrolytes Jeremy says @ 00:59:08 He is looking for a good way to track his electrolytes. Is there a way to know what you are specifically low on? He currently uses endurolytes (20 ounces of water and 4 endurolyte pills per hour) but doesn't know if that is the right ratio. ~ In my reply, I mention WellnessFX Baseline Test and DirectLabs Mineral Panel. I also talk about Onnit+ Himalayan Sea Salt or trace liquid minerals. How to train for speed and endurance at the same time Mathew says @ 01:04:30 He is doing a "stair race" in February (less than 5 minutes all out max effort) and then do a "50 mile running race" in May. He is worried that he does not have time to switch his body over in between. He has a solid base going into the training but is worried about training for both races almost at the same time. ~ In my response I mention this article on Power and Speed movements. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Podcast music from 80s Fitness (Reso Remix) by KOAN Sound. Tim Ferriss Cold Thermogenesis Special Episode
For the past 4 days, I've been living in the Rocky Mountain National Park - at above 9000 feet altitude in the depths of the Colorado wilderness. During each of those days, I took a 15-30 minute icy cold plunge into the big mountain lake... ...and there's a very specific reason why - something called "cold thermogenesis" (also known as "CT"). If you don't know what CT is - or why it can help you get massively tougher, burn fat faster, decrease inflammation, boost performance and build cardiovascular endurance, then today's Tim Ferriss Cold Thermogenesis Special Episode is for you. In this interview, I talk more about the topic of cold and fat loss with Tim Ferriss, and NASA materials engineer Ray Cronise. In this episode, we discuss: -Why weight loss experts are wrong when they say that “calories in=calories out” is the weight loss equation…. -What type of self-experiments Tim conducted to see whether changes in body temperature can result in weight loss… -Exactly how your biology responds to cold, and what it means for your rapid fat loss… -What to eat before cold exposure to make you lose even more fat, faster… -Practical ways to get instant cold exposure for weight loss… -The future of research and experimentation in cold exposure and fat loss… Due to the fact that I'm off to London this week to speak at the Global Triathlon Conference and do a Primality workshop with Darryl Edwards, we dug this extremely popular podcast episode out of our archives. If you want more resources on cold thermogenesis, then you're in luck. In addition to today's podcast, I'd highly recommend you check out the following: -The DeSoto Arm Coolers I'll be sporting during Ironman Hawaii this year -Tim's 4 Hour Body book -What Is A Body Cooling Device, and Does It Actually Work? -How You Can Use Cold Thermogenesis To Perform Like Lance Armstrong And Michael Phelps -Tips For Burning More Fat With Cold Thermogenesis (And Why Icing Really Does Work) -The BenGreenfieldFitness Premium content, which features an absolutely mind-blowing 1 hour cold thermogenesis lecture and slides by Ray Cronise Question, comments or feedback about cold thermogenesis? Have you tried cold thermogenesis? If so, what have you found successful? Leave your thoughts at BenGreenfieldFitness.com.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How Hollywood Celebrities Can Look So Good Louis asks @ 00:25:51 I have been seeing a lot of articles talking about Hollywood actors that have been able to get into amazing shape for their roles and have done so by working out 2-3 hours a day, 6 days a week. This seems to violate the rule of allowing for adequate recovery time and "over training", yet it seems like it's working for them judging by the results. So what gives? Is the importance of recovery time overstated or are these guys all using PED's to get into shape fast? ~ In my reply, I mention the body-typing fitness book at http://www.GetFitGuy.com What To Do When You Can't Eat Fresh Food Dom says @ 00:35:14 He normally eats lots of fresh food but his work is taking him away for 8 weeks to a place where all the food is packaged and stored for a long time. Could you recommend a supplement that will help him not feel sluggish from eating like this. ~ In my response, I mention the book "Eating On The Wild Side" and the "Healthy Travel Tips" video with Jessa and I and also the supplement "LivingFuel SuperGreens". I mention my previous episode on the race in Mongolia and my episode on the Boy Scout trip. In those podcasts, I had talked about Pemmican, Cocochia bars, and Supergreens. I also mention you can make your own beef jerky OR eat 200-300 calories of jerky from US Wellness Meats. You can also eat or swallow 25-50 EnergyBits and 5-10 Master Amino Pattern (MAP) capsules. Use 10% discount code “BEN” at EnergyBits.com and get MAP at pacificfit.net. Anemia From Your Gut Jasmine says @ 00:45:24 Her best friend who is 19-years-old and has only had her period once (when she was 12). She is slight, Swedish, has low iron and is gluten intolerant. Are there some tests she should get? What kind of diet should she be on? They want to avoid meds. ~ In my reply, I recommend the WellnessFX Performance panel and also the GI Effects panel from DirectLabs. I also discuss the Gut Fixing Pack, supplement Floradix and a gut healing diet such as the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. Natural Remedies for H-Pylori Nenad says @ 00:54:58 A few weeks ago he was diagnose with H-Pylori along with gut pain, bloating and irregular bowel movements. He wants to treat this naturally. Can he use Oil of Oregano to treat the infection? Is there another/better way? He has noticed a lack of energy and strength lately, could that be related? ~ In my reply to Nenad, I mention how I opted to take a high-grade oil of oregano four times per day and a supplement called mastic gum two times per day, and I was good to go within a month. I probably got lucky, because many times, parasitic infections require more serious medication and long term treatment. Often, it all depends on the type of parasite you have. What Is The Clear Skin Diet Hannah says @ 01:01:57 She is in her early 20s and did the "Clear Skin" diet and a bunch of topical stuff that the dermatologist recommended but nothing worked. Many of these influences may not even be known or considered. ~ In my response, I mention this study on traditional vs. circuit training. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. Testimonial from Rolynn After reading some of Ben's articles, he was able to diagnose himself with gluten intolerance, clean up his diet and start setting some PRs in his races again (first ones since May). He also dropped 3lbs and felt much better and lighter. He could also feel his body getting cleaner. He really credits your articles on eating gluten free prior to race days and the 4 day detox challenge. New Ways To Sleep Better Heather says @ 00:25:32 Body Health just put out a new supplement called Healthy Sleep Ultra. It is a little expensive but she knows they make good quality supplements. She has sleep issues and has tried many things that you have suggested. If this is something new that might be able to help her, she is willing to spend the money but she wanted your opinion first. ~ In my response to Heather, I mention: Travacor by Nutriscience Neuro-5 HTP by Biotics CraveArrest by Designs For Health DirectLabs and is the NeuroAdrenal Expanded test. How To Track Your Sleep Michael says @ 00:33:59 He uses the Sleep Tracker app by Innovative Sleep Solutions. They say it is 90% accurate as compared to a real sleep test. Do you believe them? Do you know of any sleep tracking apps or devices that might be better? ~ Here's where you can buy the Sleeptracker from Amazon and support the podcast. Should Blood Sugar Go Up When You Exercise Jason asks @ 00:43:21 He is a Type 1 diabetic, 31 years old, and is having trouble with his glucose readings in the morning. They jump very quickly, especially after exercise which he knows is normal. He has been counteracting the effects of exercise raising his blood sugar with some fast acting insulin but is looking for a better, more natural way, to control it. He has been IM from 6pm until noon and he follows a low-carb ketogenic diet. ~ In my response to Jason, I mention MPX100, but be careful if diabetic. Are Fillers In Multivitamins Bad? Jennifer says @ 00:54:01 She takes a lot of supplements (and I do mean a lot) and is concerned about the "other" ingredients in her supplements like: Vegetable Cellulose, silica, vegetable magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, vegetable stearic acid. She doesn't know what those are or how they impact the body. Could they be causing issue when taken in aggregate? ~ In my response, I mention porphyrin and toxin testing with Directlabs. Should You Get Your Hip Injected? Will says @ 01:01:10 He has been diagnosed with a torn hip labrum. He also has very little cartilage left in his hip. His doctor wants him to try Synvisc. Do you have an opinion on that? Also, if he had $50/month to spend on supplements, what do you think would be the best way to spend that money? ~ In my response, I recommend Capraflex and fish oil. How To Eliminate Decision Fatigue Brian wrote @ 01:08:36 You recently talk about decision fatigue. Although I believe this is a problem for me on occasion I feel my problem is more decision overload. Too many variable in the grand scheme of is this the right day to do this work out, right time to eat this, right ingredients, right protein/fat/carb make up etc. It seems like there is always another level of decisions. What should I do to simply this? ~ In my response to Brian, I mention my article on decision fatigue and this NY Times article on decision fatigue. I also mention my "Don't Mow Your Lawn" article. ----------------------------------------------------- -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question.
