#139 CEO Coach, Matt Mochary: Coaching Greatness

Guest: Matt Mochary, CEO of Mochary MethodMatt Mochary was only 31 when he sold the company he co-founded, Totality, to Verizon, “and I made enough money that that was it,” he recalls. “I didn’t have to make more money anymore.” Instead, he decided to pursue projects that in one way or another would help other people, including a documentary about the slums of Rio de Janeiro and a program to train ex-convicts in the skills of legitimate work. Today, he coaches tech and finance leaders such as Brian Armstrong (CEO Coinbase), Bastian Lehmann (CEO Postmates), Sam Altman (CEO OpenAI), and Steve Huffman (CEO Reddit). All the money earned from that work, he says, bypasses his bank account and is funding the development of software that will teach tech workers the “Mochary Method.”In this episode, Matt and Joubin discuss information asymmetry, GPT-4, focusing on fun, coaching software, saving people, the slums of Rio and the South Bronx, surfing vs. friends, the merits of crappy solutions, why companies fail, shadowing the CEO, feedback and resentment, pissing people off, the danger of “excellence,” and energy audits. In this episode, we cover:Putting in effort, finding value (01:11)OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (05:43)Immediate responsiveness (09:48)“Mount Rushmore” referrals (11:54)When Matt’s coaching was free (15:08)His Hungarian grandfather and World War II (19:56)The hero complex (25:12)Stepping away from the game (31:30)Billionaires and inner peace (38:45)The phases of company-building (40:54)The problems Matt helps leaders solve (47:48)“It’s fun to be a founder!” (54:35)Craving feedback (56:48)The zones of excellence and genius (01:02:19)“Today, what went right?” (01:09:12)Growing too early (01:12:32)Who Matt is hiring and what “grit” means to him (01:15:00)Links:Connect with MattTwitterLinkedInConnect with JoubinTwitterLinkedInEmail: grit@kleinerperkins.com Learn more about Kleiner PerkinsThis episode was edited by Eric Johnson from LightningPod.fm

The Coach Behind Silicon Valley's Best CEOs @Matt Mochary

Matt Mochary is an operator, investor and coach to top tech leaders at companies including Coinbase, Opendoor, Bolt and Clearbit. He is the best in the Valley at what he does, with a notable clientele spanning from Naval Ravikant to Sam Altman. After selling his startup in 1999 for millions, he surfed, made movies, worked with ex-cons then developed the Mochary Method to help tech CEOs excel.  Matt was my CEO coach during my time at Atrium. My friend Steve Huffman, CEO at Reddit, said he helped Reddit “save millions”. When I was confronted with difficult feedback, Matt helped me navigate my emotions. He also coached me out of my pit, and showed me what an effective leader does in their “Zone of Genius”.  In this conversation, we dive into the Mochary Method and his book “The Great CEO Within”. I ask him about tips that have transformed many into the world’s best CEOs, and actionable advice for personal growth. I also share a personal story of facing the anxiety from my past and overcoming it with an old friend. Check out the Mochary Method at https://mocharymethod.com and "The Great CEO Within" on Amazon. If you liked  this episode, check out our YouTube channel and follow us on Twitter! A thank to our sponsors Universe and CashApp for making this podcast possible.   THE QUEST MEDIA | CONTENT MEETS SILICON VALLEY | 📺 YouTube | 🍎 iTunes | 🎧 Spotify | 🗞 Print | 📌 Bio

516: Matt Mochary - The Components Of A Coaching Conversation, Making Better Hiring Decisions, Holding Yourself (& Others) Accountable, & Giving Useful Feedback

Text Hawk to 66866 to become part of "Mindful Monday." Join 10's of thousands of your fellow learning leaders and receive a carefully curated email from me each Monday morning to help you start your week off right... Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12   https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Matt Mochary is an operator and an investor. Matt is known as the coach of Silicon Valley’s best CEOs. He works with leaders at many companies, including Coinbase, Opendoor, Bolt, and Clearbit. After selling his startup in 1999 for millions, he surfed, made movies, and then developed the Mochary Method to help leaders excel. Matt's life mantra: “Make Money, Have Fun, Do Good” Matt has coached the leaders of Angelist, Brex, Coinbase, Sequoia, Grammarly, Attentive Mobile, Flexport, Plaid, and Reddit. I was not expecting so much emotion from him when talking about coaching. It’s evident that Matt finds great joy in what he does. I find that inspiring. The components to a coaching conversation... Hold each other accountable. Declare the highest priority actions. Unpack the problems. Ask them how they are complicit in creating those problems? Help provide solutions & action items for each. Then share feedback. Instead of looking for a specific class, find the best teachers and go to them. That’s where the learning happens. In college and out in the real world. "Matt’s coaching has brought me clarity, focus, organization, less stress, and higher performance (me and the team). I have always been skeptical of coaches but I think he can 10x the output of a lot of people and I hope he does!" -- Sam Altman (CEO, OpenAI) “It's often easy to make a decision, but it can be much harder to get your team to invest emotionally in that decision.” “You create buy-in when you make people feel that they are part of the decision and that their input contributes to the final outcome.” “Most companies spend extraordinary resources of time, money, and equity to bring on a new team member, and then almost entirely drop the ball on quickly getting that team member onboarded and up to speed on how the company works so that they can begin making a full contribution. Don’t make this mistake.” “You create buy-in when you make people feel that they are part of the decision and that their input contributes to the final outcome.” “Making a Sale To make a sale effectively, you need to do the following three things: Build trust Identify the customer’s specific pain Sell results, not features” “Why did you leave that job?” Was the candidate promoted, recruited, or fired? Get very curious about why.” “And when receiving appreciation, there is only one correct response: “Thank you.” Do not feign humility by downplaying the act with statements like “It was nothing, anyone could have done it.” No. The person is trying to make you feel appreciated. Anything other than “thank you” will rob them of their goal.” Meetings – ALWAYS start on time. Don’t ever say, “Well let’s wait for everyone to join zoom.”
