Jocko Willink: How to Become Resilient, Forge Your Identity & Lead Others

My guest is Jocko Willink, a retired Navy SEAL officer and author of multiple books on effective leadership and teamwork, self-discipline and mindset, and host of the Jocko Podcast. We discuss how people can build and sculpt their identity and psychology through specific mindsets and actions and how to adapt the self to novel and challenging situations, using specific daily routines. We consider how “energy” actually stems from physical action and describe practical tools and scientific mechanisms for leveraging exercise, cold exposure, nutrition, fasting, hydration, sunlight, mindset and music to make us feel more energized and what that, in turn, does for our life. Jocko explains how discipline and specific daily routines allow for productivity and creativity. And we discuss the qualities of successful leaders, including how to build confidence and real bonds when working with a team or family/friends. Jocko describes a particularly powerful tool of using perspective shifts to allow for ‘detachment’ as a unique way to identify novel solutions to problems. We also discuss the power of early developmental narratives and how experiences of friendship, love, connection and loss can serve as pillars for making us better human beings in all aspects of life. Our conversation covers a wide range of topics, including mental health, physical health and performance, and provides actionable tools that anyone, regardless of age or profession, can apply to live a more effective and meaningful life.Access the full show notes, including referenced articles, resources and more at hubermanlab.com.Thank you to our sponsorsAG1: https://athleticgreens.com/hubermanLMNT: https://drinklmnt.com/hubermanlabWaking Up: https://wakingup.com/hubermanMomentous: https://livemomentous.com/hubermanTimestamps(00:00:00) Jocko Willink(00:04:07) Sponsor: LMNT & Waking Up(00:08:42) Sense of Self, Discovery & Autonomy(00:19:11) Mindsets in the Military: Garrison vs. Combat(00:25:02) Military Divisions(00:29:34) Daily Workouts & Discipline(00:31:07) Sponsor: AG1(00:36:53) Energy & Movement, Cortisol, Nutrition(00:52:10) Exercise & Energy, Deliberate Cold Exposure(00:59:05) Win vs. Loss Mindset, Leadership, Action & Energy (01:13:11) Confidence, Generators vs. Projectors, Family(01:24:01) Restoring Motivation: Social Connection & Play(01:32:44) Self-Identity & Context, Alcohol, Music, Dopamine(01:45:10) Motivation Sources & Recovering from Loss(01:54:05) Suicide, Navy SEALs, Social Contagion(02:09:00) Suicide, Alcohol, Positive Action (02:15:03) Meditation, Detachment(02:20:30) Adaptability & Opportunities, Navy SEALs (02:30:43) Ambition & Love, Likeability, Leadership(02:40:18) Building Teams, Detachment, Family(02:50:20) Detachment: Problems & Perspective(02:55:55) Tools: Strategies to Detach from Situation(03:08:31) Tool: Situational Awareness & Detachment(03:17:49) Social Media, Personal Flaws(03:23:01) Falling Asleep & Detachment(03:27:02) Resilience Calibration, Navy SEAL Training & Combat(03:39:16) Deliberate Discomfort & Mental Resilience(03:42:21) People & Animals, Personalities(03:51:25) Political Leadership & Military, Social Media(04:01:38) Zero-Cost Support, YouTube Feedback, Spotify & Apple Reviews, Sponsors, Momentous, Neural Network Newsletter, Social MediaDisclaimer

#616: Insights from Dr. Andrew Huberman, Greg McKeown, Jocko Willink, Brené Brown, and Naval Ravikant

Insights from Dr. Andrew Huberman, Greg McKeown, Jocko Willink, Brené Brown, and Naval Ravikant | Brought to you by LinkedIn Marketing Solutions marketing platform with 800M+ users, Athletic Greens all-in-one nutritional supplement, and Allform premium, modular furniture. More on all three below. Welcome to another episode of The Tim Ferriss Show, where it is usually my job to deconstruct world-class performers to tease out the routines, habits, et cetera that you can apply to your own life. This episode is something different. It’s an experimental format that I’m super excited about, and it’s back by popular demand. This is an episode that scratches an itch I’ve had for years. I am not always able to listen to every great podcast episode out there, even when they are by some of my closest friends. The answer to my predicament was to ask them to send me a top segment from their podcast that I could listen to and—more importantly—also share with you, my dear listeners. My team edited them together, and here we are! This episode is a compilation of 15-to-30-minute clips from some of the best podcasters — and also best interviewees – in the world and certainly some of my favorites. At the beginning of each clip, you will hear an intro from the host and where to find their work and podcast. At the end, I’ll also share one or two of my favorite clips from episodes of The Tim Ferriss Show. You can view this episode as a buffet, and I strongly suggest that you check out the shows included. If you like my podcast, you will very likely enjoy the featured shows in this episode. And before you go: Do you like this format? Please let me know on Twitter at @tferriss and also mention @TeamTimFerriss.Please enjoy!SHOW NOTES:00:06:34 Who is Dr. Andrew Huberman?00:09:22 Dopamine is the universal currency of foraging and seeking.00:12:01 The purpose and effects of dopamine fluctuation.00:14:51 Dopamine and addiction.00:16:15 How to tune your dopamine system for discipline and motivation.00:26:05 Who is Greg McKeown?00:26:36 What is Essentialism?00:27:44 How to accelerate your understanding of Essentialism.00:28:10 The catalyst event that drove Greg toward Essentialism.00:29:38 If you don’t prioritize your life, someone else will.00:30:32 WIN: What’s Important Now?00:30:49 The disciplined pursuit of less and starting a “said ‘no’ to” list.00:33:16 Facing trade-offs.00:36:50 Creating an essential intent: verb, population, outcome, date.00:39:39 Finding flow through the genius of routine.00:46:57 Who is Jocko Willink?00:47:57 An unexpected problem is just the opportunity to figure out a solution.00:50:14 Who is Brené Brown?00:50:46 Reconciling self-acceptance with the urge to achieve and improve.00:52:23 Can there be such a thing as self-aware complacency?01:04:10 The crux skill that underlies all others.01:06:07 Is narcissism just the shame-based fear of being ordinary?01:09:22 How heavy is your pathological armor?01:10:23 Who is Naval Ravikant?01:11:12 How to get rich (without getting lucky — or being unethical). This episode is brought to you by LinkedIn Marketing Solutions, the go-to tool for B2B marketers and advertisers who want to drive brand awareness, generate leads, or build long-term relationships that result in real business impact. With a community of more than 800 million professionals, LinkedIn is gigantic, but it can be hyper-specific. #107: The Scariest Navy SEAL I've Ever Met...And What He Taught Me

Jocko Willink (@jockowillink) is one of the scariest human beings imaginable. He is a lean 230 pounds. He is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert who used to tap out 20 Navy SEALs per workout. He is a legend in the Special Operations world. His eyes look through you more than at you. He rarely does interviews, if ever. But a few weeks ago, Jocko ended up staying at my house and we had a caffeinated mind meld. Here's some background... Jocko enlisted in the Navy after high school and spent 20 years in the SEAL Teams, first as an enlisted SEAL operator and then as a SEAL officer. During his second tour in Iraq, he led SEAL Task Unit Bruiser in the Battle of Ramadi--some of the toughest and sustained combat in the SEAL Teams since Vietnam. Under his leadership, Task Unit Bruiser became the most highly decorated Special Operations Unit of the entire war in Iraq and helped bring stability to Ramadi. Jocko was awarded the Bronze Star and a Silver Star. Upon returning to the United States, Jocko served as the Officer-in-Charge of training for all West Coast SEAL Teams, designing and implementing some of the most challenging and realistic combat training in the world. So why is Jocko opening up? Well, in part, we have mutual friends. Second, he is the co-author of an incredible new book — Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win -- which I've been loving. Trust me. Buy it. This is his first mainstream interview and one you won't want to miss. Show notes and links for this episode can be found at www.fourhourworkweek.com/podcast. This podcast is brought to you by Wealthfront. Wealthfront is a massively disruptive (in a good way) set-it-and-forget-it investing service, led by technologists from places like Apple and world-famous investors. It has exploded in popularity in the last 2 years, and now has more than $2.5B under management. In fact, some of my good investor friends in Silicon Valley have millions of their own money in Wealthfront. Why? Because you can get services previously limited to the ultra-wealthy and only pay pennies on the dollar for them, and it’s all through smarter software instead of retail locations and bloated sales teams Check out wealthfront.com/tim, take their risk assessment quiz, which only takes 2-5 minutes, and they’ll show you—for free–exactly the portfolio they’d put you in. If you want to just take their advice and do it yourself, you can. Or, as I would, you can set it and forget it. Well worth a few minutes: wealthfront.com/tim.
