Types of Depression
- Several types of depression exist, including major depressive disorder (MDD) and persistent depressive disorder (PDD).
- MDD can be mild, moderate, or severe, single or recurrent, with or without psychotic features.
Diagnosing Depression
- Experiencing sadness, despair, or hopelessness is normal, but MDD requires meeting five of nine specific symptoms.
- Depression manifests differently in individuals, making diagnostic tools like the MMPI, Rorschach, and TAT helpful.
Nature of Depression
- Depression doesn't have a visible "face" like a physical injury and can be situational, lifelong, or bipolar.
- Bipolar depression, part of bipolar disorders, is characterized by deeper and darker depressive states.
