A study found that overeating, such as during the holidays, may cause weight gain due to genetic factors. While genetics play a role in determining weight gain, most of the extra calories consumed over the holidays are burned off as heat and eliminated as waste.
Walking immediately after a meal, rather than waiting for an hour, has been found to have a greater effect on insulin levels, blood sugar control, and weight gain prevention. This is particularly relevant during holiday feasts and after binge-eating episodes.
Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) has been identified as a compound that mimics the blood sugar control and longevity-enhancing effects of metformin, a common drug for diabetes. Withaferin A, found in ashwagandha, and the compound withaferin A, have also shown promise in their ability to regulate blood sugar levels and aid in weight loss.
Visceral fat, as compared to subcutaneous fat, can lead to more inflammation in the body. Subcutaneous fat, such as brown fat which helps generate heat, is generally harmless and can be found around the belly button. Visceral fat, on the other hand, is associated with a higher risk of health conditions like heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, and even dementia. Visceral fat cells release fatty acids into the liver, which can lead to the buildup of fatty acids in various organs and contribute to health issues.
Various factors influence the accumulation and reduction of visceral fat. Consuming high amounts of saturated fat and omega-6 fatty acids can be detrimental for individuals with certain genetic variants, such as the ApoE3/4 or ApoE4/4 variants. In contrast, consuming monounsaturated fatty acids and following a plant-rich diet can be beneficial. Combining aerobic and resistance training, along with cold exposure, can help convert white fat into brown fat. Getting adequate sleep, consuming catechins found in green tea and dark chocolate, and maintaining stable blood sugar levels can also contribute to reducing visceral fat. Additionally, factors like genetics, local food availability, and ancestral diet can influence the best approach for an individual to manage visceral fat.
