The Importance and Benefits of Self-Awareness
Self-awareness is the ability to understand ourselves and align our emotions, thoughts, actions, desires, beliefs, and values. It is seen as a positive and celebrated trait in society as it leads to more confidence, creativity, better decision-making, stronger relationships, effective communication, and overall contentment. The development of self-awareness occurs early in life, around 18 months, and continues into adulthood. There are two types of self-awareness: public and private. The combination of both types provides a deep level of self-consciousness. However, excessive self-awareness can lead to negative outcomes, such as perfectionism, overthinking, indecisiveness, self-consciousness, and detachment from emotions and experiences.
The Question of Being Too Self-Aware
The podcast explores the question of whether it is possible to be too self-aware. While self-awareness is generally seen as positive, excessive self-awareness can result in counterproductive tendencies. Being constantly engaged in self-analysis and introspection can lead to mental exhaustion and a disconnection from the present moment. It may also lead to overthinking, intense self-consciousness, and intense self-obsession. The balance between self-awareness and a healthy level of self-reflection is crucial to maintain a meaningful and enjoyable life.
Understanding Overthinking and Perfectionism
Overthinking and perfectionism are closely linked to excessive self-awareness. Highly self-aware individuals are often more prone to overthinking, which occurs when we repeatedly dwell or worry about the same thoughts for an extended period of time. Overthinking can lead to analysis paralysis and mental exhaustion. Perfectionism, setting exceedingly high standards for oneself, can also contribute to excessive self-awareness. Highly self-aware individuals may constantly reflect on their failures and feel intense self-doubt and shame if they do not meet their own expectations.
The Impact of Consuming Self-Help Content
The increasing consumption of self-help content, particularly through social media, has contributed to the rise in self-awareness. While self-help content has played a crucial role in normalizing conversations around mental health, it is important to be discerning about the information consumed. Contradictory and inaccurate information can lead to confusion and heightened self-analysis. Consuming too much self-help content can also contribute to excessive self-awareness and a constant need to rationalize and intellectualize every thought and emotion.
This is a question I have been asking myself a lot recently as someone who is VERY invested in the self-help space. Have we reached a point where we are too aware of our problems, faults, thoughts, actions and behaviours? Self awareness can free us from so many mental restrictions, it allows us to make better decisions, be a better friend, a better person, invest in our dreams and values. But at some point, we can reach a stage where we are too invested in self-reflection and introspection that it interrupts our enjoyment of the moment, can isolate us or even result in obsessive overthinking and rumination. In this episode we explore what it means to be self-aware and how online self help content might be causing us more harm than good. Listen now.
