Deep dives
The Evolution of Learning and Development Professionals
Learning and development (L&D) professionals are undergoing a significant transformation as they shift from traditional teaching roles into technologists. The historical context reveals that L&D began with classroom-based training but has now evolved into a field dominated by e-learning platforms and technological tools. Professionals in this area are increasingly required to understand various technologies and methodologies, such as instructional design and data analytics, to effectively contribute to their organizations. The emergence of this new skill set suggests that being technically savvy is now essential for anyone working in L&D.
Framework for Corporate Learning
A robust framework for corporate learning, referred to as a learning architecture, consists of four distinct levels that highlight the needs of employees in various domains. The first level focuses on providing necessary knowledge and skills that employees need to perform mundane tasks, such as unjamming a copier. The second level emphasizes developing capabilities, where individuals gain specific functional skills pertinent to their roles, such as project management or coding. The latter levels, mastery and certification, involve deeper learning and compliance with industry standards, underscoring the comprehensive nature of the learning experience companies need to offer.
The Role of Subject Matter Experts in Learning Design
Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) play a critical role in the learning processes, and their involvement in instructional design enhances the quality of training programs. Leveraging the expertise of SMEs ensures that learning content is accurate, relevant, and aligned with real-world applications. Successful companies have adopted models wherein SMEs create, curate, and deliver training, thereby facilitating a deeper understanding among learners. This collaboration fosters an environment of continuous learning and knowledge sharing while keeping the training relevant to industry demands.
The Integration of AI in Learning and Development
The introduction of AI has the potential to revolutionize how learning and development operates, offering tailored and dynamic learning experiences based on individual needs. With the capability to analyze and generate content swiftly, AI platforms can streamline the learning process, moving away from traditional course-based systems. However, as organizations experiment with these technologies, they must also be cautious to maintain an organized approach to learning materials to avoid overwhelming users. This necessitates a balance between technological innovation and the essential human element that SMEs and instructional designers bring to the learning environment.
This week I recap the idea of a “Corporate Learning Architecture” and give you some of my historic perspectives on why this is so important in the age of AI. A Learning Architecture is a constrained approach to corporate L&D that gives employees a clear and memorable approach to learning, and also gives you the “freedom within a framework” to use AI without creating chaos.
We are in the middle of deep interviews, case studies, and vendor research on the impact of AI on L&D, so as I discuss here if you’d like to talk with us please let us know.
