Flossing for Oral Health
Flossing is crucial because 30% of the bacteria in the mouth resides between teeth. Flossing twice a day is recommended to ensure thorough cleaning, and using satin tape is preferred over string floss for gentle and effective cleaning. Overzealous brushing, gum disease, genetic factors, and poor oral hygiene habits can contribute to gum recession. Flossing not only helps prevent decay and gum disease but also reduces inflammation and systemic health risks like Alzheimer's disease and chronic kidney disease.
Collagen Breakdown Testing and Receding Gums
Receding gums occur when the gum tissue drops, exposing more of the tooth. Causes include overzealous brushing, gum disease, genetics, and anatomical predisposition. Overzealous brushing can be prevented by using an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor. Non-abrasive toothpaste is recommended to avoid further damage to the gums. Tests like collagen breakdown testing help identify patients at risk for gum recession, allowing for proactive treatments like guided biofilm therapy. The antimicrobial spray used during the therapy disrupts biofilm and bacteria, ensuring better oral health and reducing plaque accumulation in recession areas.
Oral Microbiome Testing and Bacterial Associations
Oral microbiome testing reveals the bacteria present in the mouth and their associations with various conditions. High levels of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus indicate a high sugar diet. Elevated levels of certain bacteria, like Prevotella intermediate and red complex pathogens, suggest chronic inflammation and potential gum disease. Actinomyces actinomycetemcomitans (AA) may indicate the presence of gum disease, but different serotypes can range from harmless to aggressive. Clinical examinations should always accompany microbiome testing to accurately assess oral health and plan appropriate treatments.
Causes of Gum Recession
Gum recession can be caused by various factors, such as genetics and orthodontic treatments. Some individuals have teeth that naturally lie outside of the bony envelope, which results in less support for those teeth. The only thing holding them in place is the gum, which can wear away over time. Orthodontic treatments that involve expanding the teeth can also lead to teeth being outside of the bony envelope. Additionally, certain habits like brushing too hard and using abrasive toothpaste or mouthwash can contribute to gum recession.
Prevention and Treatment of Gum Recession
To slow down the process of gum recession, it is recommended to use a soft toothbrush and avoid brushing too aggressively. Non-abrasive toothpaste and mouthwash without alcohol are also recommended. As for supplements, CoQ10 is suggested as it supports collagen production and can help improve gum health. Collagen supplementation, in powder or gel form, may also contribute to maintaining healthy gums. It is important to remember that each individual's case is unique, and it is recommended to consult with a dental professional to determine the most appropriate prevention and treatment strategies for gum recession.
