Deep dives
Connecting with Yourself
One starting point to connect with yourself is to pay attention to your breath and senses. This can be done by slowing down and prolonging exhalations, allowing your nervous system to relax and creating space for reflection. Mindfulness practices and creating moments of stillness and presence in your daily life can also help you connect with your inner self.
Understanding Trauma
Trauma is the inner response to overwhelming experiences, which can range from life-threatening events to situations that induce existential crises. Trauma responses include high stress levels and nervous system shut down as a survival mechanism. It is important to recognize that trauma is not limited to extreme experiences, but can also arise from seemingly ordinary events depending on the individual. Healing trauma involves integrating these experiences to achieve a state of authenticity and fluidity.
Embracing Resilience
Resilience is cultivated through a more regulated and connected inner life. By being aware of and managing stress levels, practicing mindfulness, and developing techniques for maintaining a balanced nervous system, individuals can build resilience. This allows for better adaptation to stressful situations, improved well-being, and a more sustainable and authentic life. Resilience requires consistent effort and commitment to personal growth and self-awareness.
The Complexity of Trauma
Trauma can come from various sources, including adverse experiences, attachment issues, ancestral trauma, and collective trauma. These traumas are interconnected and can influence one another. De-stigmatizing trauma and recognizing its intelligence can facilitate healing.
Relational Dynamics and Interdependence
Understanding interdependence requires recognizing the importance of relationships and relating to others. Transparent communication, which involves sharing our inner experiences and listening deeply to one another, fosters intimacy and data flow in relationships. Humility and recognizing our filters and preconceptions are also important in creating genuine connections.
We begin a series on interdependence and the hope and opportunity to heal ourselves and our world from within it. Many of us were raised to value independence, but from it it seems we have grown more isolated and in truth, fearful. To help us understand what is happening and what the hope is, I bring you Thomas Hübl. Thomas is renowned as a teacher, author and facilitator who skillfully integrates core insights from the wisdom of the ages with the discoveries of science. He has worked internationally to help individuals, organizations and even countries heal from their collective trauma. He’s currently a visiting scholar at the Wyss Institute at Harvard University and my muse for this series is his new book, Attuned: Practicing Interdependence to Heal Our Trauma—and Our World.
