Deep dives
The Innate Capacity for Spiritual Life
Dr. Lisa Miller discusses the innate capacity for spiritual life that is present in all human beings. She explains that spirituality is built within us and can be developed through prayer, meditation, and deep connections with nature and others. Cultivating a strong spiritual core is correlated with resilience, decreased risk of addiction and depression, and a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life.
The Intersection of Science and Spirituality
Dr. Lisa Miller explores the intersection of science and spirituality, highlighting how they can go hand in hand. She presents scientific research that supports the reality of spirituality and its positive impact on our lives. By examining the brain's spiritual response and the correlation between spirituality and mental health, science can provide a witness to the significance of spirituality in our well-being.
Building and Strengthening the Spiritual Core
Dr. Lisa Miller emphasizes the importance of building and strengthening our spiritual core. She explains that the spiritual core can be developed and deepened throughout different stages of life, such as adolescence, midlife, and elderhood. Having a strong spiritual core is shown to provide protection against the diseases of despair, foster post-traumatic spiritual growth, and lead to a deeper connection with ourselves, others, and the divine.
Today we’re sharing another fantastic session from our Restore Conference last October, this time from Lisa Miller. Lisa is a clinical psychologist and professor at Columbia University who specializes in the science of spirituality. She’s also the author of the popular 2021 book The Awakened Brain: The New Science of Spirituality and Our Quest for an Inspired Life.
We often think of science and spirituality as separate ways of knowing that don’t really speak to each other, where science focuses on what we can see and empirically observe, while spirituality focuses on the unseen. Lisa’s research bridges these worlds, building an empirical case for the reality of spirituality and its benefits across the lifespan, and showing how science can be a “witness” to spirituality. She believes we all have an innate, in-born capacity for spirituality, or “relational, transcendent awareness”. Individuals who cultivate a strong spiritual core are less likely to experience despair, addiction, and depression throughout the life course, and a spiritual core is correlated with growth and resilience after facing challenges.
We really loved Lisa’s session as well as her beautiful spirit. As we got to know her in person at Restore, we realized what a special person she is and felt the love she has for our community. We think you’ll be able to feel that as you listen to her talk.
