From prehistoric times to the present day, human evolution has been closely linked to the quest for controlling and utilizing various forms of energy.
Humans have adapted for efficient walking, requiring less energy compared to other animals. This adaptability to endurance running provided a unique advantage for early humans in hunting and surviving in various climates.
The energy density of foods played a crucial role in human survival and development. Dense energy sources like meat and grains provided more efficient nutrition compared to fruits and vegetables.

Over the past century, there have been significant advancements in energy technology. For example, in 1900, a farmer controlled just five kilowatts of animate power with six horses while plowing a wheat field. By the year 2000, a farmer in a tractor cabin could effortlessly control over 250 kilowatts of diesel engine power. Similarly, coal-fired locomotives in 1900 had a maximum performance of one megawatt, whereas in the year 2000, pilots of a Boeing 747 commanded up to 120 megawatts of gas turbine power. These examples showcase the tremendous growth in power and efficiency that has been achieved in the last century.
The decline of supersonic jets and nuclear energy raises interesting questions about our willingness to abandon certain technologies after accidents or mistakes. While the high-profile accidents at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island influenced the perception of nuclear energy, it was ultimately the reduction in flying after the 9/11 attacks that impacted the viability of supersonic jets like the Concorde. This raises the question of why we tend to reject ideas after a few mishaps instead of finding ways to improve and learn from them. It is worth exploring the psychological and cultural factors that contribute to this phenomenon.
While the last two decades have seen significant innovation in software and digital technologies, there has been a relative lack of hardware innovation. The rise of companies like Apple, Google, and Tesla has brought tremendous strides in software development and user experience, but there is a need for more breakthroughs in hardware technology. The advent of space travel and other emerging industries may spark renewed interest in hardware innovation, leading to new companies and advancements in areas like 3D printing, machinery, and more.
As we look to the future, it remains to be seen how companies like Apple and Google will fare in the long run. While they currently dominate the tech industry, it is possible that their positions may evolve as new technologies and industries emerge. The dynamic landscape of innovation and the shifting demands of consumers may lead to the rise of new companies and technologies that are at the forefront of progress. It will be fascinating to observe how companies adapt and evolve to maintain their relevance and impact in the ever-changing world of technology.
From a fundamental biophysical perspective, both prehistoric human evolution and the course of history can be seen as the quest for controlling greater stores and flows of more concentrated and more versatile forms of energy and converting them, in more affordable ways at lower costs and with higher efficiencies, into heat, light, and motion.
Energy and Civilization by Vaclav Smil provides an explanation of energy in its relation to society. Smil dives deeply into the history of energy. From scavenging and foraging to the modern uses of water, wind, and solar power, energy drives every existing thing in today's world. Interestingly enough, it's difficult to place what exactly energy is, as it's not as tangible as other forms of measurement. Additionally, energy expended while hunting and gathering also needed to be considered. Energy cost vs. energy returned.
