The pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the basin of Mexico always ate plenty of prickly pears, which were easy to gather from the many species of cacti. Pears pulp is overwhelmingly about 88% water and has an energy density of just 1.7 megajoules per kilogram. Even a small woman surviving only on carbohydrates of cactus pears would have to eat 5 kilograms of this fruit every day. But she could get the same amount of energy from only about 650 grams of ground corn consumed as tortillas.
